Can you guess which one?

a.) Superbad star Jonah Hill is going to write and star in a big screen adaptation of 21 Jump Street.
b.) Nicolas Cage is going to star in a big screen version of the action series Riptide.
c.) George Clooney will star in and direct a movie version of Magnum, P.I.
d.) Ian Ziering will star in a big screen version of The Greatest American Hero.

After the jump, the answer.

Continue reading Another '80s show is coming to the big screen - VIDEO

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Hills star cast in a movie

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, TV on the Bigscreen, Casting
In other news, the apocalypse is finally here. I suggest you find Will Smith, take shelter at the nearest WalMart, and await the zombies.

Audrina Patridge will star in Into the Blue 2. The original, starring Jessica Alba and other hotties, was sublimely bad. The opportunity, Partridge says, "is giving me a chance to show people [what I can do]. This is why I moved to LA."

My questions for you TV Squad readers are as follows: Would you watch a movie starring Audrina Partridge? And, do you think this will instigate yet another feud among the The Hills skanks? I mean, LC was in Epic Movie but she played herself so that hardly counts as starring in a film.

The Hills season finale is live tonight from a mansion in Beverly Hills. The finale itself, which also stars Usher, will air at 10 PM ET and there will be an after-show at 11 p.m. ET. I haven't seen it in 25 years or so and I'd probably be horrified now by what my youthful tastes were back then, but I remember liking the race scenes and what the car could do. I remember wanting my first car to be one that would have buzzsaws come out of the front and a big lever that would come down underneath the car that would make it jump over other cars. That last feature doesn't seem like it would work to me, now that I think about it as an adult.

Anyway, the live-action version with Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, and Matthew Fox opens this Friday. And the early buzz is that it's not going to do as well as they were hoping it would.

Continue reading Do you plan to see Speed Racer? - VIDEO

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

A MacGyver movie? - VIDEO

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, TV on the Bigscreen, Video, Reality-Free

Get your paper clips and elastic bands out because there is a MacGyver movie in the works! According to the Dark Horizons website, MacGyver creator Lee David Zlotoff announced over the weekend at Maker Faire 2008 that a big budget movie based on the series was in the planning stages.

Sadly, he revealed no specifics about the movie other than he got the movie rights a few years ago and has total control over the movie.
Continue reading A MacGyver movie? - VIDEO

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The episodes to watch to get you ready for the Sex and the City movie

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, TV on the Bigscreen, Reality-Free

I tried and tried to get into Sex and the City, but two things stood in my way. One, I have testicles, and two, I just don't think the narrative was that strong. I thought I'd like it because it was about NYC and had sex and women in it and the main character was a writer, but it just never happened.

Of course, we now have the big screen adaptation of the series coming on May 30, and people who have never seen the show, but plan on seeing the movie (not sure who that would be, but maybe there are some), and fans of the show who haven't watched it in a while might need a primer. Well, BuzzSugar has taken care of that for you. They list the 12 essential episodes you have to watch before you see the big screen flick. There are two episodes from season one, one from season two, three from season three, two from season four, one from season five, and three from season six (this is in addition to the first and last episodes).

How many of you are planning to see the movie?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

PR at its finest?
Following a stellar weekend at the box office for the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy Baby Mama (it won the weekend), comes word that Poehler is actually pregnant. According to People, Poehler and husband Will Arnett are due this fall. They've been hitched since 2003. In Hollywood, that's like being married for an eternity. Good for them.

Seriously, though, could this announcement have come at a better time? People are already buzzing about Baby Mama and now this. Her PR reps and agents must be salivating at the news. Maybe I'm jaded or overly negative, but I find it hard to believe that this wasn't a wee bit planned - the news, not the kid. I mean, c'mon. She's pregnant and she's in a movie where she's pregnant. If it tanks, announce the good news whenever you feel like it. But if it does well, which it did, then you've got one hell of a push for the film's marketing campaign.

But I've never seen a box office champ predicted before the movie is even released. Apparently, though, that seems to be the case with the new movie from two of the funniest women on TV.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie Baby Mama, which stars SNL's Amy Poehler and 30 Rock's Tina Fey, will likely win the box office race this weekend. The film, which is being released today, has been garnering a lot of pre-release interest among 12-to-16 year-old girls, according to tracking surveys taken over the last few weeks. Huh? Didn't know stories about surrogacy were big with teenage girls. Is there something someone isn't telling me?
Continue reading Fey, Poehler expected to be box office champs

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Hey, that X-Files movie now has a title

Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, TV on the Bigscreen, Reality-Free

We told you last week about the new X-Files DVD set and how the episodes on the set might give a clue as to what the new big screen movie will be about. Now we have another clue, sorta: the movie has a title.

Creator and producer Chris Carter has announced that the title of the movie is The X-Files: I Want To Believe. That's a perfect title! As fans of the show know, this was pretty much Agent Mulder's mantra and the caption on a famous poster that he kept on the wall in his office (on the right is a scene from the new movie). The first X-Files movie was titled The X-Files: Fight The Future.

Continue reading Hey, that X-Files movie now has a title

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

TV Guide interviews Nimoy and Quinto about the Star Trek movie

Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, TV Royalty, TV on the Bigscreen, Reality-Free

There hasn't been much information leaked from the set of the new Star Trek movie, but that isn't from lack of fans trying.

My favorite part of this TV Guide interview with Leonard Nimoy and Zachery Quinto (who both play Spock in the film somehow - I'm sure it involves time travel and science) is when Quinto reveals that one day during shooting, director JJ Abrams took out his cell phone and showed Quinto a photo that was on the web. A photo of the very scene they were currently shooting that day, in that very room! Personally, at that point, I would have ordered the doors locked and looked around and see who it could have been.

The movie has been pretty much under wraps, except for a snippet of film here and some behind the scenes photos there. And the cast and crew certainly aren't saying anything about the movie's plot. The only hint we've received is that this movie has more to do with a standalone mystery than the alien mythology storyline from the show (and the first film).

But now I'm slightly confused, as this press release for a new X-Files DVD set says that the set gives a hint as to what we can expect in the movie.

Continue reading New DVD set might give hints about X-Files movie

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Hi-Yo, Silver! One more time, that masked man will ride again. Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have enlisted writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio for a big screen remake of The Lone Ranger. A live action, hoot-hollering, hero on a horseback western epic, if Bruckheimer follows his pattern of doing things big and bold.

Ted and Terry are the same writers that helped bring Pirates of the Caribbean to the movie theaters in three box office bonanzas. And with Pirates, there was a lot less source material. Pirates of the Caribbean was just a ride at Disneyland (and Disney World). The Lone Ranger could be called the Long Ranger with its rich history in radio, TV and written word.
Continue reading Hi-Yo, Silver! The venerable character, who was created by writer Leslie Chareris in novels in the 1920's, will be back on television in a contemporary setting, and actor James Purefoy (Rome) has been in talks to play Simon Templar, the suave, British "good guy" thief. Aside from Purefoy, the Hollywood Reporter writes that the production team includes first class talent: Homicide's Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana (Oz), writer Jorge Zamacona, Bill Macdonald, and the original TV Saint himself, Roger Moore, and his son Geoffrey Moore.
Continue reading The Saint is coming back to TV

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Bada Bing! The source of that information was none other than show creator David Chase. So, you would think that this information would be very reliable. Mmmm, perhaps not. For, you see, another rumor has popped up from a resource even more reliable than the man who actually created the program.

While saying that he tried not to channel Don Adams's performance so he could bring something different to the role, in an IESB.net interview with Carell, he said that before he got the part of Maxwell Smart, Agent 86, of CONTROL, both Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell were considered. The film had actually been in development for nearly a decade. Steve recalled going to Warner Brothers for a reading about three years ago. "It was the most surreal moment, because I went in thinking I was just going to audition for a role. I didn't expect them to offer me the part of Maxwell Smart."
Continue reading Get Steve - Carell talks about the new Get Smart movie

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Some X-Files movie sequel hints - VIDEO

Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, TV on the Bigscreen, Video
Can you hear the eerie music becoming louder and louder? That's the sound of the X-Files movie being one step closer to being released on the big screens this summer (more than likely on July 25)! News traveling so fast, ideas extrapolated and speculated upon based on the simplest of facts. That said, here's a sweet little tidbit that I found amusing. Tom Cruise was spotted on the Los Angeles set of the new Star Trek feature film. He reportedly was visiting writer/director JJ Abrams. The two men, you'll recall, collaborated on Mission Impossible 3.

This exclusive, courtesy of JFXOnline, revealed that Tom stuck around the set for a couple of hours. Prior to this sighting, there had also been talk last fall that Abrams had wanted to enlist the superstar to make a brief cameo appearance in the revamped Star Trek opus, telling the story of how creator Gene Roddenberry's original characters came to be. How Captain Kirk made it out of the Star Fleet Academy (in The Wrath of Khan he said he cheated on his Kobyashi Maru simulation test), as well as the first time Kirk met the half-Vulcan, half-human Mr. Spock.

Continue reading Tom Cruise visits Trek set

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

J.J. And now, I only have to wait a little longer (late 2008 to be more specific) for the Smurfs to take the big screen. Cinematical is reporting that a movie about Peyo's little blue buggers is in the works. The film, produced by Paramount / Nickelodeon, will be directed by Colin Brady who has worked as an animation supervisor on films like E.T., Hulk and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Here's what I'm not so jazzed about. The movie is 3D CG-animated. What happened to regular animation? I just want my smurfs in regular 2D and only three-apples-tall (or however three-apples-tall translates onto a movie screen). What do you readers think? Am I being too old-fashioned in saying this creative move will jeopardize the soul of the Smurfs? Well, maybe that was harsh. Anyway, check it out for yourself. According to Variety, Paramount Pictures has pushed back the release date because they feel it would make more money as a summer tentpole.

The reboot is being masterminded by J.J. Abrams, who is behind such television shows as Alias and Lost. It stars Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Mr. Spock. Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role of Spock in the 1960's, will be returning as well in the movie as an older Spock.

Frankly, I think this is a bad idea. While the movie-going public increases during the summer, Star Trek has the benefit of family appeal that would make it perfect as a Christmas Day release once the gifts are open and the family starts realizing that it can't stand each other.
Continue reading Star Trek movie pushed back to 2009

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

J.J.
