Why Robert Schimmel Was Never the Wacky Sitcom Neighbor

Comedian Robert Schimmel Robert Schimmel had a few chances at TV. The 60 year-old comic, who died this weekend from injuries he received in a car accident Thursday, wrote for 'In Living Color' early in his career. He appeared frequently on Conan and the Howard Stern Show, which made him a favorite among his fellow comics, who appreciated his honesty about everything from his sex life to his health. And there was a laundry list of maladies there that ranged from a heart attack to lymphoma.

That kind of honesty, and Schimmel's blunt approach to it, is hard to translate into sitcom success. Schimmel had sitcom pilots, but they never made it to television. He came closest in 2000, when Fox ordered a run of 'Schimmel,' which would have opened with Schimmel getting an anal exam at the proctologist's office.

EXCLUSIVE: Ken Jenkins of 'Scrubs' to Play Courteney Cox's Dad on 'Cougar Town'

by Joel Keller, posted Sep 3rd 2010 5:10PM

Ken Jenkins as Dr. Kelso on 'Scrubs'Fans of 'Cougar Town' haven't seen much of the family of Courteney Cox's character of Jules Cobb, outside of her son Travis and always-there ex-husband Bobby. But that will change during the show's second season, according to creator Bill Lawrence... and fans of 'Scrubs' will see a familiar face in the role.

"I hired Ken Jenkins this morning to play Courteney's father," Lawrence told me earlier today. "Because I only work with the same 20 actors, Joel, you know that."

Jenkins played crusty hospital administrator Dr. Bob Kelso on 'Scrubs' for nine seasons, the last two of which showed Kelso having to deal with a forced retirement. Lawrence hopes that Jenkins will stick around the ensemble for a while.

"To me what was fun was casting somebody that hopefully will be in the world too and poke his head around. He's such a great actor... the guy's funny as sin."

Larry King Talks Life After CNN, Sings 'Poker Face' with Ryan Seacrest

Known for his, um, hard-hitting interviews, Larry King got a taste of his own medicine when bulldog journalist Ryan Seacrest turned the interrogation lights around. The retiring CNN veteran fielded tough questions on 'Dancing With The Stars' and possibly taking over for Dr. Laura on Seacrest's radio show Thursday.

"I just think it's embarrassing," King said of the possibility of appearing on 'DWTS.' "I'm not a dancer but my wife I think ... I'm telling them now ask her."

As for taking over Dr. Laura's gig: "This advice thing, I couldn't," he said, then joked about what a potential show of his would be like. "People call in with problems, I help them. Because I've had every known problem!"

Finally, Seacrest put King to the ultimate test: Could he finish the lyrics to "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga, a song we hear is popular with the kids these days? Watch the video on the next page for the surprising answer. Or don't, if you don't want to have nightmares for weeks.

Halderman, 52, had been sentenced to serve six months at Rikers Island jail in New York after admitting to trying to soak 'The Late Show' host for $2 million to keep Letterman's affairs with his staffers a secret. But after serving four months, Halderman was given time off for good behavior and released on Thursday, and will now begin completing 1,000 hours of community service.

And try to get a new job, obviously.

'American Idol' to Hold Final Auditions in Los Angeles

Lee DeWyze on 'American Idol'Great news for all those Angelenos who think they've got what it takes to win 'American Idol'!

The show's producers have announced that they're expanding the search for new talent by adding Los Angeles as the seventh, and final, city to host auditions for the upcoming 10th season.

Producers say the extra auditions are a celebration of the show's "momentous" tenth anniversary and will give tens of thousands of people a chance to show off their singing chops. And this year the eligibility age range has been increased to include hopefuls from 15 to 28 years of age.

Executive producer Ken Warwick said it's also a vote of thanks and acknowledgement to Los Angeles itself: "This summer we have had an exceptional turnout -- both in the number of people auditioning and the level of their talent. ... Los Angeles has always delivered great talent, and so we feel it only fitting that we end our tenth season audition tour here in our home city."

It's Been the Worst Summer Ever for 'The Tonight Show With Jay Leno'

by Catherine Lawson, posted Sep 3rd 2010 7:10AM

Jay Leno, August 2010Funnyman Jay Leno won't have much to laugh about when he sees the new ratings figures for 'The Tonight Show With Jay Leno'. After a chaotic year of changing hosts, multi-million dollar pay deals and very public feuding between the Leno and Conan O'Brien camps, it seems as though viewers have voted with their remotes and switched off this summer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leno's attracting far fewer viewers in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic than Conan O'Brien did whe he hosted the show. And, just to pile on the misery, the show has also hit a new record summer low in 'Tonight Show' history.

However, it's not all dire news for Leno. He's still ahead of CBS's 'Late Show With David Letterman' in the ratings, though CBS has pointed out that unlike Leno, Letterman's ratings have held steady since last summer when he -- ahem -- also reached an all-time low.
