This latest trailer for The X-Files movie, coming out July 25th, actually has some meat to it. The
past teaser-trailers haven't shown much except some snow and a lot of flashes of black. In this trailer, we actually get to see some of Mulder and Scully's co-stars -- namely, Amanda Peet and Billy Connolly. Peet appears to be an FBI agent who is a bit of an outsider because she's a believer in the paranormal, which is why Mulder is brought on to the case. Connolly plays an unusual man, a psychic, who may or may not be nuts.

The "big" shows are over, and now the typically low-key summer TV schedule begins. Oh sure, there are some real gems in there that are still airing or will start soon, but overall the excitement is nothing like the September-through-May period. Maybe people are ...
gasp ... going outside to enjoy the sun?
It's been two years since we first delved into the world of
Retro Squad, so we're back now with what we believe is a better format. Rather than pick a few shows and only review one season from each throughout the summer, we're doing theme/show weeks. These weeks will not only have
standout episode reviews from any past season, but we'll have themed
lists,
Vs.,
interviews and
videos. There are only so many weeks in the summer, so we can't cover all of your favorites, but I think there's something for just about everyone here. Check out the schedule below, after the jump.

So Isabelle posted a story recently about the new X-Files sequel that is supposed to hit theaters this July 25. The movie has been pretty much under wraps, except for a snippet of film here and some behind the scenes photos there. And the cast and crew certainly aren't saying anything about the movie's plot. The only hint we've received is that this movie has more to do with a standalone mystery than the alien mythology storyline from the show (and the first film).
But now I'm slightly confused, as this press release for a new X-Files DVD set says that the set gives a hint as to what we can expect in the movie.

Make sure you don't miss the first part of the Supernatural set visit.Smoke effects lazily float across a packed soundstage. Someone calls for quiet. The camera and sound get up to speed, and Kim Manners belts out a loud, "KICK IT IN THE ASS!" Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki power through a page of dialogue ... and a scene for
Supernatural is shot. Wahoo!
Kim Manners is one cool dude. When you first meet him, his diminutive frame and long hair make you think "Wow, this guy must be laid back and mellow." Believe you me, he can turn on his drill sergeant voice and snap you in half if you aren't careful. That includes wasting anyone's time or not taking your work seriously. He's a pro and except the same out of the people he works with. But, he's also incredibly nice. He left me remarkably intact.
He's definitely no stranger to the television world, having directed everything from
Charlie's Angels, to
Mission: Impossible, to
Baywatch, to
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. before he landed on the
X-Files team and stayed onboard for the long haul. His brother Kelly has also directed episodes of
Buffy and
Angel, so it looks like their love for the supernatural (get it?) runs in the blood.

Our friends at sister site Cinematical have
some good news for any remaining fans of
The X-Files: a second theatrical film, which star David Duchovny has been talking about making for a few years now, is closer to being a reality. During a set visit to Duchovny's currently shooting film
The TV Set, IESB.net found out from the actor that
negotiations are currently in their final stages, and that the film should start filming in 2008 or sooner.
According to IESB, Duchovny had mentioned the possibility of a second
X-Files movie in 2005; instead of an alien conspiracy plot, though, Scully and Mulder would be engaged in a "standalone supernatural horror film," as IGN reported back then. That's probably a good idea, since the series ended five years ago (and most people stopped watching soon after the first movie frustrated die-hard fans way back in 1998). Continuing the conspiracy storyline would feel like they were beating the pile of dog food that the dead horse was made into. Though I wouldn't mind seeing a glimpse of the Cigarette Smoking Man again...

With Helen Mirren's Detective Tennison bowing out on
Sunday's Prime Suspect finale, television is losing one of its finest tough broads.
Tough broads have feelings and faults, but they're nobody's baby. They also don't give a crap what you think of them. They dress for utility not for style, and they work -- usually in domains stereotypically belonging to men.
We'll miss you, Detective Tennison. You are the inspiration for this list of tough TV broads - the ones little girls and little boys can look up to.

(
S01E15) So, how creepy is that opening scene in the hospital? Yikes. Scully insists that a fellow FBI agent, who was shot during a bank robbery, be revived. As the doctors are hitting him with the defibrillator, the dead body on the next bed is bouncing with the electric shocks. The dead body is that of the bank robber. This is the only good part of this episode, by the way.
When the FBI agent wakes up, he's not himself. He obviously has the mind of the bank robber but the body of the agent. Since Scully is the one who shot the robber, methinks she's in a bit of danger.

(
S01E14) I can honestly say I had never, ever seen this episode of The X-Files. I'm not sure why I passed it over or missed it over the years, but it was new to me. And I totally loved it! Oh, and Nic Lea, who plays villain Alex Krycek in subsequent seasons, makes an appearance in this episode as 'Michael', a near-victim of the Monster of the Week.
The opening scene of Gender Bender made me wonder what time of year this episode aired. It opens with sex, after all. But, alas, it was not created for ratings as it originally aired on January 21, 1994.

(S01E12) We're back to the Monster of the Week episodes and this one's a doozy. This time the perp is a pyromaniac who can start fires with his mind or something. That's bad news for Mulder who is deathly afraid, of all things, fire. Oh, and Mulder's investigating the case with his ex-girlfriend (Phoebe) from Oxford.
The episode opens in England with a gardener smiling as his boss suddenly explodes into flames and dies on his front lawn. The next time we see the gardener, he has dropped his accent and is posing as a caretaker for an American home where a British family is moving in. He really hates the British aristocracy.

(
S01E11) While many of the episodes so far in season one have dealt with typical things like ghosts and aliens, Chris Carter really gets his freak on with Eve. He knows there's nothing creepier than twin girls.
The episode opens with joggers finding an 8-year-old girl outside her house without a coat on. She tells them her daddy needed some time and they find him in the backyard, sitting on the swingset. He's dead. With two holes in his neck.

(
S01E10) We're back to the Mythology episodes with Fallen Angel. This time, Chris Carter plays to conspiracy theorists' fears that the U.S. military is covering up the presence of aliens on earth. The episode opens with a fire in the woods outside Townsend, Wisconsin, where something appears to attack a curious sheriff's deputy. In a military control room, a tech tracks an unusual object in the air that cannot possibly be an aircraft. The tech is told by the colonel to write it up as a meteor, while the colonel calls someone and launches Operation Falcon.

(
S01E09) Real events inspired this episode. Chris Carter says he wrote Space after seeing the real 'face on Mars' photograph. According to the experts over at
The X-Files wiki, this episode was meant to be a cheaply made one with lots of NASA footage but the construction of the command center pushed them over budget and made Space the most expensive episode of the season. Whoops.

Gillian Anderson, formerly Agent Dana Scully on
The X-Files, has confirmed that she is pregnant with her second child. Back in April,
she announced the split from her husband of 16 months and no, he is not the father. The father is her new boyfriend, who has moved in with her a eleven-year-old daughter Piper (who was born during season 2 of
The X-Files).
Anderson is currently living in London where she has been doing a lot of theater work. Most recently, she was seen on American television when she played the lead role in PBS' Masterpiece Theatre's production of
Bleak House.
