The SopranosDavid Chase (The Sopranos) won two TCA/TV Critics awards on Saturday night in a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton.

The first, for Outstanding Achievement in Drama, was presented by TCA member Molly Willow of The Columbus Dispatch.

"After eight years of some of the best writing and performances ever on television...we didn't want to see it end -- and as it turns out, we didn't have to," Willow deadpanned, referring to the much debated finale in which Tony Soprano cut to black.

John Oliver (The Daily Show) hosted the 23rd Annual TCA Awards, which were given out at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on Saturday night.

After being introduced by outgoing TCA president Rob Owen of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Oliver opened the show up with (surprise!) some political humor. Pointing out that vice president Dick Cheney was fully in charge during President Bush's colonoscopy procedure, a ranting Oliver joked, "We should be thankful that we are alive to enjoy this evening!"

Jason Priestly (Beverly Hills 90210) led the cast of Side Order of Life, a Lifetime series in which star Marisa Coughlan has second thoughts about marrying Priestly. But, hey, if Big dumped Natasha on Sex in the City then I suppose anything's possible.

Nominations for the 59th Emmy awards are announced on July 19thLet me take a look at my trusty calendar. Okay, tomorrow I take the kids to the doctor. On Thursday I get that bikini wax. Friday? Sweet Niblets! Next week (July 19th, to be exact) they announce the nominees for the 59th Emmy awards to honor achievements for what has gone on previously rather than what is going on now. Which is opposite of the Golden Globes or the SAG awards, which honor achievements that are going on both presently and in the past. Wait, let me read that again . . . yep, that makes sense!

Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq is Gandolfini's first post-Sopranos project for HBO as well as the first project from his new production company, Attaboy Films. The documentary, which will debut on Sunday, September 9, will focus on the new generation of wounded veterans who have returned from Iraq. Gandolfini, the documentary's executive producer, interviews ten of the wounded veterans who reveal their severe disabilities and their plans for the future.

The Soprano familyAfter all the discussion there's been over the finale of The Sopranos, it surprises me that nobody has commented on the superb parenting skills shown by Tony and Carmella over the past seven years. Why, in just the finale alone, there were a number of parenting tips that I was able to take to heart. If you're a parent, I think you might find them useful as well.

Don't let your children park their SUV in the forest.
When I was a kid, nobody had SUV's. Also I grew up in the desert of Arizona, so piles of leaves were hard to find. I don't know if the dealer warns you about the fire-causing catalytic converter when you buy the car, but I'm glad I found this out before my kids started driving.

sopranos spoofI know, I know, everyone and their mother's dog has commented on the final scene of the final episode of The Sopranos, made their little jokes, had their fun, and now we all want to move on.

Well, tough, because this video is really funny.

It comes from comedian/actors Phillip Wilburn and Artemis Pebdani, who play the couple in the booth next to Tony and his family in the final scene. Was Tony killed by one of his enemies, or did he unwittingly upset a couple who just wanted their damn onion rings?

I'm not going to talk about the video too much, because I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say I was impressed with how well they spliced together the new scenes with the shots from the actual TV show. That seamlessness makes it even more funny.

Sopranos"Reserve lots of money for Christmas, 2008."

That's the word from HBO Home Video head Henry McGee, speaking at the DVD and Beyond industry conference. He's talking about a Sopranos complete set. TVShowsOnDVD.com verified the info with McGee, and says it will be an expensive set. Though I wonder what they mean by expensive, since TV fans are used to paying $150-300 for complete sets.

Maybe the set will have commentary by David Chase on that series finale, or maybe deleted scenes or other info that will give more closure (for you fans who need that). Or maybe they'll be more of that black scene, which Chase wanted to last 20 seconds longer than it did (HBO talked him out of it).

Hillary ClintonSeveral weeks ago, Senator Hillary Clinton asked the public to help her come up with a theme song for her presidential campaign. And then The Sopranos ended its historic run. And it was too much of a good opportunity to pass up.

So Hillary and hubby Bill made a video for her web site discussing what song the Senator had selected. Only the video is a parody of the Sopranos' last scene in the diner, with Hillary as Carmela, Bill as Tony, Chelsea as the parallel parking Meadow, a bowl of carrot sticks substituting for onion rings (Bill's got heart problems) and an abrupt cut-to-black.

SopranosOK, if you're not all exhausted by the Sopranos talk and examination of that final scene, let me bring up yet another take on the episode, via a friend of TV critic Roger Catlin at The Hartford Courant.

During the scene in the safehouse in the episode, there an an episode of The Twilight Zone playing on the television. An alert viewer figured out that it was the 1963 episode "The Bard," where a TV writer gets help from the ghost of William Shakespeare, who gets angry at the meddling from advertisers and the network and eventually punches an actor (Burt Reynolds).

The SopranosI'll admit I was first "miffled" by most ambiguous ending ever in the history of series endings. But I'm beginning to come around to the the side that sees The Sopranos finale as "brilliant" rather than "lame." David Chase left us wanting more, and that's pretty awesome. Besides, according to Ken Levine, it could have been a lot worse.

On his blog, Ken, a veteran sitcom writer, hilariously reminds us just how annoying The Sopranos finale would have been on network television. For starters, a countdown clock would have run across the bottom of our television screens for at least a month leading up to the finale. The two-hour finale would have been preceded by a one-hour clip show hosted by Bob Costas. Janice would have gotten her own spin-off called Widow With Children.

David ChaseGive David Chase some credit. He promised Alan Sepinwall of the Newark Star-Ledger an interview right after the finale of The Sopranos aired. Sure enough, even though he's on a sabbatical in France and is denying all interview requests, he kept his promise and spoke to Sepinwall yesterday, despite the controversy surrounding how his series closed out its run.

Did he reveal what happened in final scene, where Tony Soprano eyes some shady figures while waiting for his family to arrive for dinner, after it cut to black? Of course not. But he did try to allay fan's assertions that he pulled the rug out from under them.

Tony Soprano - The Blue Comet(S06E20) We had two weeks to wait for a new episode of The Sopranos, and the powers that be didn't throw us a double insult by making this week's show a waste of our time, that's for sure. Our own Rich Keller wrote a couple of days ago about a New York Post item suggesting that this week would be the culmination of the series and next week would settle us up. Not too far off the map, I'd have to say, either.

Big surprises aside (we'll save the spoilers for after the jump), it was great to see Artie and his restaurant (and New York Jets coach Eric Mangini with his wife) make an appearance, and the monstrous amount of foreshadowing that the opening scene showed us was pretty damn intoxicating, if you ask me. Hell, a good part of me forgot about all the little plotlines that were left open for us to ponder over the years. We're definitely going to get a run for our money in next week's episode, so if you haven't watched this week's yet, then fire up your DVR and get to it before finishing this post.

Will this week's episode mark the end of Tony SopranoWith the series finale of HBO's The Sopranos fast approaching (a week from this Sunday, to be exact) speculation is running wild as to what's going to become of Tony Soprano and his companions. The biggest question is whether or not Tony will alive or dead when the final credits role.

Michael Starr of the New York Post is betting that we'll know something about the series finale after the next-to-last episode airs this Sunday. Starr believes that this week's episode could be the one that features a final battle between Tony and his enemies, while the last episode could be the one that ties everything up in a tidy package, leaving Tony alive and kicking. Few clues are being given in episode description. For example, for this week's episode, "The Blue Comet", HBO writes 'The allegiance of those closest to Tony is put to the test and a case of mistaken identity has serious ramifications.' Not much to decipher from that notice, is there?

Its also been reported that show creator David Chase, who co-wrote this Sunday's episode and wrote and directed the series finale, has filmed several endings to The Sopranos to throw everyone off as to the fate of Tony. My guess is that Tony will wake up from a dream and Suzanne Pleshette will be there in bed next to him. Hey, it worked before!

Tony and Silvio(S06E19) After last week's big development with Christopher being offed by Tony Soprano, we were probably due for a letdown as far as developments go, but that was definitely not the case. Meadow decided that she felt like being part of the storyline for the first time in awhile, and we all knew that A.J.'s situation was bound to go one way or another, but how quickly might have come as a surprise.

When it comes to the drama classification, this show always makes the cut. But this week, for some reason, I felt like it meshed even more than usual with that genre with all that went on throughout the episode. When it all boils though, the family ties were what made this show so successful, and they're what keeps the drama flowing. Except for the fact that we've all got to wait two weeks to see how our Sopranos is going to get ready to close up shop, I think we're in for a quality run that everyone can get behind.

AJ Soprano Beer(S06E18) It's been a long time since something on the shocking tip happened and at the same time, I wasn't surprised at all. Tonight, something I certainly thought would go down this season did, but certainly not how I'd have thought. I have a feeling that some of the "old" Tony Soprano might have returned, unfortunately for only three more weeks before this show finishes up.

Was this week perfect? By all means not, but taking out a character that has meant something to all the show's fans forever, and showing what looks like an inkling of an ugly finale when it comes to Tony and the New York crew could provide for one of the more fantastic endings, perhaps the one we all deserve after surviving through so many production delays and season holdups.
