Things are getting a little scary for next season's slate of new shows that don't exist yet. And last night, as our own Joel Keller reports, the networks and Television Critics Association (TCA) agreed to cancel the winter tour. It makes sense considering the TCA Tour generally involves the networks touting their upcoming programming to the 200 or so members of the association so as to get good press (hopefully) to build buzz. With the way things are going, had the event occurred, it would have been a very dry affair.

"So, we've got some reality shows coming up, and we're looking at doing some reruns."

"Really. Wow, that's interesting, which network were you again ... Oh that's right. It doesn't matter."

Continue reading What happens to television if the strike lingers?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

TCA cancels winter press tour due to writers' strike

Filed under: OpEd, Cancellations, TCA Press Tour, WGA Strike
Last night, Television Critics Association president Dave Walker announced that, because of the ongoing writers' strike looks like it won't be settled any time soon, the association's winter press tour will be canceled. The tour was scheduled for January 8 - 19 at the Universal Hilton in Los Angeles.

Even though the winter tour is less extensive than the summer tour, it is a good time for the networks to give critics a mid-season "state of the network" statement and introduce the stars of their midseason shows. None of the broadcast networks could commit to presenting at the tour, and when the cable nets and PBS started pulling out, the association felt it was best to cancel outright.
Continue reading TCA cancels winter press tour due to writers' strike

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

TV continues uninterrupted in comic books

Filed under: OpEd, TCA Press Tour, TV Squad Lists, WGA Strike

What are you going to do? The Office, How I Met Your Mother, and even new shows like Pushing Daisies and Chuck are either out of fresh episodes or quickly running out. Well, you don't need to spend the "strike season" curled up in the corner of your bedroom crying through a pile of TV Guides, remembering the good old days when you didn't already know what was going to happen this week on House.

Television is alive and well, and even growing ... just somewhere else. Want to know what happened to Jack Bauer before Season One of 24? How about Buffy and the Scooby Gang after the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? More and more shows are expanding their horizons by telling prequels, sequels and even in-between-quels in comic books, or graphic novels.

Continue reading TV continues uninterrupted in comic books

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Chris O'Donnell stars on TNT's The Company with other super-hero grads

Filed under: Grey's Anatomy, Interviews, TCA Press Tour
Chris O'Donnell's "Robin" was partnered with "Batmen" Val Kilmer and George Clooney in the movies - but he never battled crime alongside Michael Keaton, who brought the Dark Knight to the big screen in 1989, until the two were cast in The Company. The TNT six-hour, three-week mini-series (based on the book by Robert Littell about the early days of the CIA and the Cold War) debuts on Sunday, August 5 at 8 PM.

"Michael wasn't on that long," O'Donnell told TV Squad in a one-on-one interview in a TNT-hosted suite at the Beverly Hilton following a TCA panel for The Company last month. The actor actually shared more screen time with Company co-star Alfred Molina (aka Spider-Man 2's Doctor Octopus). "We all sat around together [at one point] thinking, 'It's two from the 'Justice League' and one [Spider-man] super villain!'"

There was one typo, however For some reason, Marc Cherry was listed on the producers' list; sure, he's Desperate Housewives' top exec, but the man should have been put on the talent tip sheet, too. He knows how to tease a season and entertain a table full of reporters like no other!

Cherry gave the scoop on new characters played by Dana Delany and Nathan Fillion -- also, a preview of what's ahead for the other ladies of Wisteria Lane.

Continue reading ABC's All-Star party - plus Desperate Housewives preview - TCA report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

ABC day 2: predictions on Isaiah, 24, Grammer & Trees come true - TCA report

ABC crammed in eight (!) panels today on new and returning series as the TV Critics summer 2007 press tour -- finally -- came to an end.

As predicted in my preview story about today's sessions, Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy; Private Practice) was indeed asked about ex-GA cast member Isaiah Washington, who was canned last month by ABC and then scooped up by rival NBC for a role on Bionic Woman.

A reporter wanted to know what Rhimes thought about NBC president Ben Silverman saying he was in talks with Washington prior to the actor being let go at the end of the TV season.

Continue reading ABC day 2: predictions on Isaiah, 24, Grammer & Trees come true - TCA report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The day with ABC: New shows, Hope, Faith, and Sex - TCA report

Filed under: TCA Press Tour, Casting

We TV Critics are dead on our feet now that we're in the last two days of a near-three week press tour at the Beverly Hilton, but that hasn't stopped us from getting dish from actors and producers here to hawk their fall ABC series.

On stage to promote Cashmere Mafia (a series about four women living life in New York City) creator Darren Star was asked about his other program about four women that call the Big Apple home. Star says: "There's a [film] script. It's in the form of pre-production."

Big Lost scoop! Harold Perrineau is returning to the serial ABC drama as killer Michael Dawson.

Getting the news out of ABC entertainment president Stephen McPherson wasn't easy, however.

The session began with Hope Hartman, one of ABC's top PR chiefs, getting the day off with some really good news -- because we're on the final legs of the tour's "death march with drinks" all ABC functions will take place on-site at the Beverly Hilton hotel. Panel questions are lacking in energy.

The tour that never ends is, well, coming to an end.

ABC kicks off the last two days of the TV Critics press tour today with an executive session by ABC entertainment prez Stephen McPherson, followed by a look at new series Pushing Daisies, Women's Murder Club, Cavemen, Cashmere Mafia, Carpoolers, and Dirty Sexy Money.

Continue reading ABC press tour preview, day one - TCA report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Set visits to The Closer, TMZ, Cold Case, Two and a Half Men, Brothers & Sisters - TCA report

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, The Closer, Heroes, Brothers and Sisters, TCA Press Tour, Awards
After 15 consecutive days of Mohammed (TV shows) coming to the mountain (the Beverly Hilton hotel), today the mountain (actually, the TCA membership) went to Mohammed. Two bus loads of TV critics boarded vehicles to hit five sound stages and the offices of TMZ.com.

First up was The Closer at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood. Kyra Sedgwick and other cast members of the TNT drama mixed and mingled on the show's squad room set. Most reporters hovered around Sedgwick to inquire about her Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama Series, the show's new season and husband Kevin Bacon.

Okay, today we really are having a field trip with the Television Critics Association. It's called a "TCA Day" -- the first one was on Saturday, which consisted of a membership meeting and the TCA awards.

This morning, the TCA membership is boarding a bus outside the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills and heading out to Burbank and Hollywood for set visits at The Closer, Heroes, TMZ, Two and a Half Men, and Brothers & Sisters.

Continue reading TCA Day 2: Set visits to Heroes, The Closer, Brothers & Sisters - TCA report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

FOX's press tour gala - Simpsons, swag, Santa Monica - TCA report

Filed under: House, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Prison Break, Bones, TCA Press Tour

Two days of presentations from FOX wrapped up with yet another outdoor "all-stars" party. FOX held its gala at the Santa Monica Pier just in time for out-of-town TCA members to see the sunset and the Pacific Ocean.

While there was plenty of swag in sight (mostly various sizes of dolls from The Simpsons), you had to earn it!

Party attendees played carnival games (ring toss, shooting baskets, knocking down bottles with baseballs, popping balloons with darts) in order to take home prizes.

Continue reading FOX's press tour gala - Simpsons, swag, Santa Monica - TCA report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Fox press day 2, part 2 - Margulies, Sherman-Palladino on Gilmore Girls and House - TCA report

Filed under: House, Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Dirt, TCA Press Tour
ER's Doug and Carol together again? Don't hold your breath unless you can do so for at least three more years.

Julianna Margulies, who's starring in the FOX mid-season replacement Canterbury's Law, says that she'd love to do another project with former ER love interest George Clooney. But the actress, who left the hospital drama in 2000, wants there to be a full decade in between projects so that fans won't think of them as lovebirds.

Alas, the reunion won't likely take place at Country General, either.

Continue reading Fox press day 2, part 2 - Margulies, Sherman-Palladino on Gilmore Girls and House - TCA report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Fox press day 2, part 1 - Fox-y pages, the Terminator and Nashville hopefuls - TCA report

FOX is giving The CW pages a run for their money -- the network's hired a bunch of, dare I say it, "Fox-y" microphone runners for the tour.

Like yesterday, they all dress in a theme of whatever panel is going on. On Sunday, they were TV reporters for Back to You; today, they're in commando fatigues for The Sarah Connor Chronicles. You get the idea.

One of pages, Cal, who used to be a cashier (and aspiring actor) at my local health food store, says hi during a break. I got a feeling back then that I'd end up seeing him at TCA one day, but I always thought he'd be on a panel for a new series.

Continue reading Fox press day 2, part 1 - Fox-y pages, the Terminator and Nashville hopefuls - TCA report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Richard T. Bad boys, bad boys..."

Fox kicks off its second day of the press tour with a look at Cops, which is turning 20 years old. That's a lot of torn, white tank tops and name-calling, isn't it?

After a historical look back at the real-life crime show that was ahead of its time, when you think about the amount of reality TV that's out there today, Fox will present the rest of its lineup. Bonus: a table read of the 100th episode of Family Guy!

Continue reading Fox's press tour continues - Family Guy turns 100 - TCA report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

A taste of New Orleans - dinner with Fox's K-Ville - TCA report

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, TCA Press Tour
Just when I thought it was another field trip.

Rather than load all 200 plus members of the TCA on a plane to New Orleans, Fox decided to have a N.O.-themed party at Les Deux, a trendy restaurant in Hollywood in honor of its new series K-Ville, which has cast Anthony Anderson and Cole Hauser as cops in a post-Katrina Louisiana.

There was only man who could give me the full scoop on this series and what it will mean to New Orleans -- Times Picayune TV columnist Dave Walker

Continue reading A taste of New Orleans - dinner with Fox's K-Ville - TCA report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Fox's fall lineup and executive session - The Life of "Reilly" - TCA report

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Bones, TCA Press Tour

Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly answered inquiries from TCA members on Sunday about a big name exiting the network -- only the network was NBC and the departure was Reilly's own.

Reilly poked fun at the standard reasons found in press releases that are used to explain a person's leaving a top gig. "No one is ever really fired in Hollywood are they," he rhetorically asked, adding, "You can pick whatever trade euphemism you want [to explain my exit from NBC]. 'I segued.' 'I thought about it over the holidays.' I want to spend more time with my family, which I did for three days.'"

Then, Fox hired him to work with Peter Liguori, the network's entertainment chairman.

Continue reading Fox's fall lineup and executive session - The Life of "Reilly" - TCA report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Fox preview - Kelsey Grammer, Patricia Heaton, Bones - TCA report

Filed under: Programming, The Simpsons, Bones, Brothers and Sisters, TCA Press Tour, Awards

Fox Broadcasting Company gets its turn today to go in front of the TCA membership at the Beverly Hilton's International Ballroom.

You can bet Kevin Reilly, president, entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company, is going to be asked a few questions about his exit last spring from NBC.

Once those inquiries get out of the way, Reilly, and Peter Liguori, Fox's chairman, entertainment, will tout Fox's upcoming TV shows.

Continue reading Fox preview - Kelsey Grammer, Patricia Heaton, Bones - TCA report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

23rd Annual TCA Awards - Alec Baldwin, The Sopranos and "Moore" - TCA report

Filed under: The Office, Celebrities, The Sopranos, Kyle XY, Heroes, 30 Rock, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, TCA Press Tour, Awards

John Oliver (The Daily Show) hosted the 23rd Annual TCA Awards, which were given out at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on Saturday night.

After being introduced by outgoing TCA president Rob Owen of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Oliver opened the show up with (surprise!) some political humor. Pointing out that vice president Dick Cheney was fully in charge during President Bush's colonoscopy procedure, a ranting Oliver joked, "We should be thankful that we are alive to enjoy this evening!"
