With
Battlestar Galactica and
The Sarah Connor Chronicles now gone, I'll be looking to
Warehouse 13 for my summer sci-fi fix. Thankfully, it looks like a pretty cool show. I like the concept, and I'm digging the Whedonesque vibe of the Sci Fi Channel's latest
preview clip and the
show's official trailer.
Now I have another reason to tune in. Actually, I have four more reasons. The show will be
loaded with great geek-friendly guest stars, including
BSG's Michael Hogan, Tricia Helfer and Whdeonverse vet Mark Sheppard.
Stargate Atlantis alum Joe Flanigan will also appear on the show.

There's been a lot of talk in the nerd world about the upcoming
Stargate Universe, the second spinoff to Sci Fi's long-running
Stargate: SG-1. Most of it has been pretty negative.
Some fans aren't too thrilled about this new approach to the
Stargate franchise, which will reportedly feature more character-driven drama versus action-adventure romps, a darker tone, a few younger characters, and at least one gay character.
I don't get the skepticism. I'm really looking forward to the show. Actually, I can't wait to watch the franchise try to evolve from fun, lighthearted adventure to a dark sci-fi drama. I'm not saying it'll be any good – I'm just curious.
Months ago, consulting producer Joe Mallozzi
compared SGU to Battlestar Galactica and Lost. Now, show creator Robert C. Cooper is saying
SGU is somewhat inspired by another great sci-fi show – Joss Whedon's
Firefly.

SyFy's
Stargate Universe will kick off with help from two familiar faces this fall. Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks will
reprise their Stargate: SG-1 roles in the series premiere of
Universe, which is billed as a darker, character driven sci-fi show.
Shanks' appearance will be a one-time cameo, according to consulting producer Joseph Mallozzi. Anderson, however, will make multiple guest appearances in
Universe in addition to showing up in the two-hour premiere. The actor said he would make "slim appearances" in the first "half dozen" episodes or so.

During Friday's excellent
Battlestar Galactica series finale, SciFi aired a preview for
Stargate Universe, the new
Stargate show starring Robert Carlyle and Lou Diamond Phillips.
SGU follows a group of scientists and civilians trapped on an Ancient ship, The Destiny, which forces them to travel throughout the far reaches of space. Along the way, the group struggles to survive and unlock the "secrets" of the ship's Stargate.

The Wraith attack Earth, a major character may or may not bite it, and it's frakkin' awesome.
Well, it's pretty good for something reportedly produced in a rush. According to
Gateworld, the producers of
Stargate Atlantis learned about the show's cancellation during the shooting of "Identity," the third-to-last episode of the current season. They were forced to scrap ideas for a sixth season and make this Friday's season ender, "Enemy at the Gate," the series finale.
Clips and moderate spoilers after the jump.

Enough looking back already! Let's forget that 2008 was a mostly dismal year for TV and focus on the future. From sci-fi detectives to modern
Mad Men, the 2009 TV season has a lot to offer. Here are ten new shows to keep on your radar (listed by premiere date).

... five canceled shows.
Some shows, like critical darlings
The Shield and
Battlestar Galactica, are allowed to end gracefully; major story arcs are wrapped up and fans are left satisfied. Others are yanked from network schedules like unsightly weeds from a rose garden.
The networks yanked a number of shows off the air this season. Most of them, like
The Ex List, probably deserved the axe, but there were four that deserved more time to develop an audience and one that I'm really gonna miss. In no particular order, they are:

I was looking at my last two Festivus wish lists in an attempt to determine if any of my requests came true. Turns out, many of them did come to fruition -- something that I'm damn proud of. Sadly, a new sitcom for Dustin "Screech" Diamond did not materialize. Oh well, maybe that will occur sometime next season when, after coming out of a trance, the NBC executives realize they made a terrible mistake putting Jay Leno on at 10:00 pm and need something to fill the empty space.
Now, without further ado, let me put down the aluminum rod for a bit and talk about my Festivus wish list for the upcoming year.

I still haven't figured out how to display my "feats of physical strength" in this post, so let's just get to the annual Festivus airing of grievances.
First off, like everyone else around here, I'm disappointed by NBC's decision to give fans of hour-long dramas the finger. You want me to watch Leno on primetime five nights a week, NBC? Do you really hate me that much? Second, I'm saddened by Sci Fi Channel's decision to cancel
Stargate Atlantis, my favorite guilty pleasure. Third, I got it in for
you, America! Thanks a lot for not making
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles the hit it deserves to be.
There's more -- trust me there's more -- but here at TV Squad we also celebrate Festivus by sharing our TV wish list. This year, I'm wishing for:

Yep, I got a
Twitter. It's part of my plan to plaster the Internet with links to my must-read blog posts about
'90s indie rock and that handsome bastard Neil Patrick Harris (don't ask). Fortunately for you, some clever TV stars also use Twitter for fun and shameless self-promotion.
Here are ten fan-friendly TV celebs worth stalking on Twitter. Unlike that
fake Stephen Colbert, these guys are all one-hundred percent, real-life paparazzo magnets.

Robert Carlyle is a fine actor with an impressive resume (
The Full Monty,
28 Weeks Later, 24: Redemption to name a few), but he'll always be the hard-drinking, C-word screaming, Ewan McGregor-slapping
Begbie from
Trainspotting to me. Which is why it comes as a surprise that he's been cast as
the lead in the next Stargate series,
Stargate Universe.
Carlyle will play Dr. David Rush, leader of a group of scientists and civilians trapped on a ship traveling through space. Word is that Dr. Rush, charged with finding a way to return his crew home, might not be the nice guy everyone thinks he is.

No one's watching
Terminator, the
Dollhouse problems persist, and too many of my favorite shows are on hiatus until next year. Grrr! Argh! Still, I love TV, and now's the time to look on the bright side and give thanks for all the good stuff I've watched this season.
This year, I'm thankful for:
Battlestar Galactica – This last season has been challenging but thrilling to watch. Actually, that about sums up the entire run of the series. I'm confident that the final eps will be as good as what came before.
Netfilx Watch Instantly for Mac – I'm catching up with
Doctor Who, Dead Like Me, and revisiting old eps of Joy Mohr's
Action. I've never been so happy to be a beta tester.

Do you know what a dilithium crystal is? Ever use the term "cosplay" when discussing your weekend plans? Own more than two non-
Star Wars action figures? If you answered "Affirmative!" to any of these questions, then you'll be staying home this Friday night, because you're a nerd. It's cool. That means you'll be able to catch this week's ep of
Stargate Atlantis, with guest stars Dave Foley, Bill Nye the Science Guy and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. All nerds, by the way.
Kids in the Hall vet Foley plays a professional rival of Dr. McKay (David Hewlett), who invents an anti-global warming device that, instead of ending global warming, almost kills everybody at a swanky party, including Nye and DeGrasse Tyson. Not intrigued? Gateworld says there might be a scene with
Jewel Staite stuck in a giant freezer. I know. It's a good show.

(S05E08) On paper, "The Queen" looked to have a lot of potential. The team was back together and off on an adventure. Even better, this wasn't some standalone excursion to an unknown planet that we wouldn't be seeing again. The story was set to tie the research that was recently discovered in Michael's lab in with the ongoing story of Todd. For the most part, all of that added up to a very good episode.

(S05E07) This week the Atlantis team sets out to prove that just because you make a sci fi show set in another galaxy, it doesn't mean you can't have an old fashioned zombie story. If that wasn't enough, this was also the much talked about episode with the all female team. That team included Nicole de Boer, and the returning Leela Savasta. How successful it was depends on how you feel about zombie movies to start with. For me, it was rather hit and miss. Some nice show mythology, mixed up with a monster of the week, and some bits that just fell flat. We'll get into it all, after the jump.
