Since I'm covering eateries this week, I'm certain I'll miss some of your favorites, but I'm going to list what I believe to be the most popular dining spots from television, both past and present. And since there are way too many real spots on TV to mention (Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Stadium, etc.), I'll stick with fictional spots, even if they're based on real ones.

This time let's go with 14 of them.

1) Arnold's/Al's Drive-In (Happy Days) -- I struggled for a bit with what I would call the number one eatery on TV, but I kept coming back to this spot. Arnold's/Al's was in nearly every episode as far as I can recall, and of course housed The Fonz's office. After it burned down, the signage changed to Al's.
Continue reading The 14 greatest TV eateries

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

TV's Top 5!: Seinfeld alums need jobs too

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Everybody Hates Chris, The CW, Seinfeld

This is a public service announcement to Jason Alexander.

Life after Seinfeld has been really tough for you has it? I mean not as tough as Michael Richards who should follow Isaiah Washington into "pottymouth rehab", but you haven't exactly parlayed your existence into other gigs like Julia Louis-Dreyfus in The New Adventures of Old Christine. Our enthusiasm for the dimwitted loveable man has been curbed towards Larry David, who helped you become a star. Even the virtually unknown Seinfeld writer Spike Feresten has been able to translate writing his soup nazi episode into his own talk show.

All you have to work with is your short lived marriage to Britney Spears. Oh wait. That wasn't you either.

Continue reading TV's Top 5!: Seinfeld alums need jobs too

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Jesse Jackson calls for Seinfeld boycott

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Industry, OpEd, Syndicated, Watercooler Talk, Celebrities, Seinfeld
If you've been following the Michael Richards apology tour, you know that the actor made an appearance on the Reverend Jesse Jackson's Keep Hope Alive radio program in which he claimed to be "shattered" by his own remarks. That wasn't good enough for the Rev. The day after Richards' appearance, Jackson called for a boycott of the recent seventh season Seinfeld DVD release to punish the actor where it really hurts - the pocketbook.

How boycotting the Seinfeld DVD set would actually hurt Richards is beyond me. Between syndication points and a series-run as Kramer, I think Richards is pretty set financially. As a symbolic act or even one motivated by publicity, I suppose a boycott makes a bit more sense -- but not much seeing as Richards' words were spewed without the consent of the entire cast and crew of Seinfeld. (I've linked to it in the past, but if you want a better reason to hold Seinfeld suspect, check out hip-hop artist Danny Hoch's monologue about his scheduled appearance on the show.)
Continue reading Jesse Jackson calls for Seinfeld boycott

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Five: Big hits with humble beginnings

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Boston Legal, CSI, Grey's Anatomy, The Five, Seinfeld
It's quite ironic that on Sunday night, ABC aired an episode of Boston Legal in the 10 PM time slot and called it a "special time." Most people forget this, but as my brother Rich pointed out in his review of the episode, Sunday at 10 was the show's original time slot, until the network put a new medical show called Grey's Anatomy into that slot in late March 2005.

The intention was to air Grey's in that slot for a few weeks, help it get an audience, then move it to another slot and bring BL back to Sundays at 10. Of course, we all know what happened: Grey's ratings surpassed those of BL, rendering William Shatner and James Spader temporarily homeless. And the audience just kept steadily building until it became the top-rated show on television.
Continue reading The Five: Big hits with humble beginnings

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Kramer has a Mel Gibson moment

TMZ will be the downfall of more than one celebrity. The LA gossip hounds have posted video of Michael Richards' soon-to-be infamous Laugh Factory performance in West Hollywood.

On Friday night, Richards proved that trying to shake the Seinfeld curse can get to a guy. In the middle of his stand-up routine, Richards took on two hecklers with a racist tirade that included your standard issue racial epithets along with this charmer, "Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a fucking fork up your ass." It was, of course, caught on tape by someone in attendance. Richards has already told the press that he's sorry and will "make amends." I'm tempted to take bets on whether he'll enter rehab, offer a tearful apology to Diane Sawyer or both.

Less you think this incident came out of nowhere, check out hip-hop theater artist Danny Hoch's monologue from Jails, Hospitals and Hip-Hop on his brush with the Seinfeld cast.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld tops DVD awards

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Comedy Shows, Other Reality Shows, Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, ABC, FOX, HBO, Cable, TV on DVD, Lost, The Simpsons, Animation, Music and Variety, Doctor Who, Children, Seinfeld

The fifth and sixth season sets of Seinfeld took top honors at the recent TV DVD Awards in Century City, California. Seinfeld won "Best of Show" and "Best 1990s Series." Below is a list of winners in other categories. I didn't purchase any of these DVDs, with the exception of The Simpsons. Were there any DVDs that came out between September 1, 2005 and August 31, 2006 you guys think should be on this list? I was somewhat surprised to see Dinosaurs win for Best Children's Program, not because it was a bad show, but because I considered it more of a family show than a children's show. Anyway, the list:

As a writer on Seinfeld, he penned "The Soup Nazi" episode, which many consider one of the best on the classic series. He also wrote for SNL, Late Show with David Letterman and The Dana Carvey Show.

Now he's in front of the camera with TALKSHOW with Spike Feresten (Saturdays at midnight on FOX), his twisted take on the tried-and-true late-night talk show format. How twisted? Well, in the last episdoe, he scoured a crummy neighborhood in L.A. looking for a sidekick, had Mary Lynn Rajskub operate heavy machinery after downing half a bottle of Nyquil, and presented a barbershop quartet that sung homo-erotic songs.

I caught up with Spike right before he conducted a Q&A with the cast of fellow FOX show Standoff at last week's New York Television Festival. We talked a little about his new show, but mostly just dicussed Seinfeld. The interview is after the jump.
Continue reading A fast Q&A with Spike Feresten

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld: The Keys (season finale)

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, TV on DVD, OpEd, Retro Squad, Seinfeld

(S03E22) Like I said when we started this whole Retro Squad exercise, the reason why I picked Season Three of Seinfeld is because during this year you really saw the show develop before your eyes from a pokey, single-story, funny, but unremarkable sitcom to a densely-packed, fast-moving, hilarious classic. And the season finale, "The Keys," is a great example of the show's metamorphosis. Jerry and George's dispute over the spare keys, the whole spare key trade-around among the Fab Four, Elaine's secret Murphy Brown spec script, and Kramer's journey to L.A. are all crammed into this 30-minute episode. And there's still room for stand-up bits and a really funny recurring joke.
Continue reading Seinfeld: The Keys (season finale)

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld: The Parking Space

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, TV on DVD, OpEd, Retro Squad, Seinfeld

(S03E21) I'm the only person I know who actually drives in New York. The funny thing is, the only reason why I drive is because I live 30 miles away from the city, and I tend to find that sometimes driving is much faster than taking the train. But if I were actually living there, I'd ditch my car in a nanosecond. Most people who live in New York don't own a car, because it's too tough to find parking and the subway can get them to just about anywhere they need to go.

So why are so many episodes of Seinfeld so auto-centric? Jerry has a car. Kramer has a car. George doesn't have a car here but eventually gets a car. Thank goodness for Elaine; she never got a car (and we find out later in the series that she's an illness-inducing driver). But, really, that ratio should at least be reversed, if not doubled (8 non-drivers for every driver, if you don't feel like doing the math). Oh, well. At least most of the driving-related episodes, including this one, are pretty good.
Continue reading Seinfeld: The Parking Space

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld: The Letter

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, TV on DVD, OpEd, Retro Squad, Seinfeld
(S03E20) I know this episode was produced over fourteen years ago, but it was still hard for me to recognize Catherine Keener in this episode. I'm usually pretty good at recognizing younger versions of now well-known actors, but even when I watched this episode the other day, I was surprised when the "Notes on Nothing" mentioned that Nina, Jerry's jealous artist girlfriend, was played by Keener. Maybe it was because she was younger, or it could have been her hair or something. Either way, she did a great job in this episode, foreshadowing how she'd do in movies like Being John Malkovich and The 40 Year Old Virgin.

Anyway, if you're a fan of Neil Simon, you probably loved that episode. It's as if they don't realize how despicable they are from day to day, or -- the more likely answer -- they just don't care. In this episode, Jerry and the gang repeatedly trash the reputation of a person who would hit a car and drive away without leaving a note. Justifiable, until you realize that Jerry lies about confronting the hit-and-run driver because he wants to date her, George is dating a married woman whose husband doesn't say "God bless you," and Kramer steals a girl Jerry's been eyeing right out from under him. Elaine seems to be in the clear here, though... she's only devious every third episode, at least at this stage of the show's run.
Continue reading Seinfeld: The Good Samaritan

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld: The Limo

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, TV on DVD, OpEd, Retro Squad, Seinfeld

(S03E18) Larry Charles, one of Seinfeld's primary writers, mentions in the DVD commentary for "The Limo" that it is one of his favorite episodes; he feels that it's one of the first episodes in the series to take a silly premise -- what if George and Jerry take the limo of a Neo-Nazi? -- and find humor in it by grounding it in reality. Well, the reality of Larry David, but at least it's someone's reality.

Personally, this is one of my least favortie episodes of the show's entire run. Sure, there are some funny moments, but the whole "pretending to be someone else" plotline comes right out of Sitcomland, and could have been taken right from an episode of Three's Company -- well, not the Neo-Nazi part, but you get the idea. At this point in Seinfeld's run, especially after the brilliance of "The Boyfriend" the week before, audiences were expecting more. And, to be honest, there wasn't a lot to laugh at in this one.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld: The Boyfriend

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, TV on DVD, OpEd, Retro Squad, Seinfeld

(S03E16 / S03E17) "And you want to be my latex salesman."

For the last couple of weeks, I've been reviewing two Seinfeld episodes each Wednesday so I can get them out of the way before the fall season starts. But this one has to stand on its own, because it's one of my three favorite Seinfelds, right up in the pantheon with "The Junior Mint" and "The Contest." It's the culmination of what Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld and the writers had been building since the first episode of Season Three, chockablock with storylines, pop culture parodies, sports references, classic lines, physical jokes, and switcheroos. It's a scene that sets up so much of what Seinfeld riffed on in future years, that to see this play out in the context of the show at the time is seeing Larry, Jerry and the writers discover comic gold.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld: The Suicide

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, TV on DVD, OpEd, Retro Squad, Seinfeld

(S03E14) You may not think this is a landmark Seinfeld episode, but it is. Why? Because this is the first time we hear one of the show's enduring catchphrases: "Hello, Newman."

We had encountered Newman in the Season Two episode called "The Revenge", but we only heard his voice (which was done by Larry David). But when it came time to give Kramer a buddy, Jerry an enemy, and a guy who was supposed to be the building snitch, Larry and Jerry decided to come back to Newman. So this is the first time we see Wayne Knight playing the best side character the show ever created. It almost seems like no one else could play the part now, but the names of some of the other people who auditioned for the part might surprise you...

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld: The Pez Dispenser

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, TV on DVD, OpEd, Retro Squad, Seinfeld

(S03E13) Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, as they were doing the DVD commentary for this episode, really were laughing a lot (and in a bunch of unexpected places). I just love the fact that the two of them could go back and relive these scripts that they lived with and pored over so closely, and still laugh at them as if the jokes were fresh. To me, that's the sign of quality writing. What I found interesting is that they both felt that the material in this episode hadn't aged at all; the clothes may look old, said Jerry, but the jokes are timeless. Their wonderment at this is quite refreshing to me, since every one of the show's fans could have told Jerry the exact same thing a long time ago.
Continue reading Seinfeld: The Pez Dispenser

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld: The Subway

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, TV on DVD, OpEd, Retro Squad, Seinfeld
(S03E12) The synchonization of the airing and production orders of the Season Three episodes started to getting a little dicey as the series entered 1992. For instance, the episode "The Suicide" was produced before "The Subway", but was aired two weeks after "The Subway" aired . But since I'm trying to present these in the order they aired, I'm doing "The Subway" next.

At this point in the third season, the memorable episodes are coming with more frequency. And they're getting more daring; because most of the scenes were shot on a subway-car set specially made for movie and TV shoots, the episode had to be shot out of order without a studio audience. Considering the logistics involved in the previous audience-less episode, "The Parking Garage", this one was realtively easier to do. But it still wasn't easy. The results, though, are pretty damn great.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld: The Red Dot

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, TV on DVD, OpEd, Retro Squad, Seinfeld
(S03E11) Why is this one of may favorite Season Three episodes? Well, mainly because three of the Fab Four's storylines come together in quite satisfying ways. There's a refrain ("Of course it's cashmere!") that, while it didn't become a catchphrase, certainly put a nice punctuation on the episode. We saw some warmth and caring between the friends, which ended up engendering trickery and resentment. And George uttered one of the ultimate Costanza lines of all time.

Oh, and Kramer got drunk. On one drink. Even the DVD notes thought he was a lightweight.
Continue reading Seinfeld: The Red Dot

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld: The Alternate Side

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, TV on DVD, OpEd, Retro Squad, Seinfeld
(S03E10) How many shows airing in 1991 would have had a plot revolve around breaking up with a man who had a stroke? I can tell you this much: even Roseanne Barr couldn't have thought of a such a dark plotline, but, for some reason, Larry David could. That's what made Seinfeld so great; it touched on topics that other sitcoms of its era never even dared to touch. And, though the characters do horrible things to each other and the people who come into their world, it was done in such a funny way that people latched onto these characters. It's a formula that's been tried over and over since without much success; just ask the producers of Arrested Development how hard it was to get people to like unlikable characters.
Continue reading Seinfeld: The Alternate Side

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld: The Nose Job

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, TV on DVD, OpEd, Retro Squad, Seinfeld

(S03E09) This episode is always the one I remember as either -- using Friends nomenclature -- "the one with all the flashbacks" or "the one with all the cut-ins." It's a format that Seinfeld used rarely before or after this episode, but this episode seems to be rife with it. When George mentions how big his girlfriend Audrey's nose is, we cut to a close-up of Audrey's face, then we cut back. We see Jerry introduce himself to the beautiful Isabel as he's talking about it with George. Then, when he later explains to George how he tried to get Kramer to keep him from calling her again, we flash back to that, too. Add to that Jerry's imaginary "brain vs. penis" chess match, and this is one of the more conceptual episodes Jerry and Larry ever made.
Continue reading Seinfeld: The Nose Job

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
