(S08E16) The pressure of writing the last episode must be tremendous. Especially for a long-running show like Monk. The writers have to tie up loose ends, satisfy viewers' desire for the characters, and leave fans with a sense of closure. Closure, in fact, is the word Dr. Bell used with Adrian. Monk was looking for it and so were we.

But the ending is tough. There have been some shows that have stumbled badly at the end. Seinfeld, for instance, was a real stinker. But the memory of Newhart, which harkened back to The Bob Newhart Show may be the best-ever. Now, in the broader scheme of things, Seinfeld was a much better series than Newhart; in every way but the ending. Which brings us back to Monk. How did the writers navigate the Monk finale? Follow me after the jump and I'll tell you all about it.
Continue reading Monk: Mr. Monk and the End (Part 2) - Series Finale

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Stargate Universe - Justice

Filed under: OpEd, Stargate, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Star Trek: Original Series

(S01E10) "You put ordinary people under enough stress, I think you'll find they're capable of anything. - Dr. Rush

While watching this episode of Stargate Universe, I kept thinking of the "Court Martial" episode of the original Star Trek series. Captain Kirk is tried for the wrongful death of a crewmate, but Spock discovers via a 3D chess game that the computer's system has been tampered with and presents the evidence at the trial. Yes, I'm that geeky.

Ok, so that's about all these episodes have in common, and there's only so much you can do with the "trial in space" story. It boils down to the characters, and in this instance, the battle lines were drawn even further in this compelling little murder mystery.
Continue reading Review: Stargate Universe - Justice

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Men of a Certain Age -- An early look

Filed under: OpEd, Celebrities, Early Looks, Reality-Free

If you ever watched Everybody Loves Raymond -- or currently watch the reruns -- you might wonder what would Raymond become after a while. What would happen if he didn't have Deborah yelling at him and his family keeping him from being a self-indulgent slob who only thought of himself. Men of a Certain Age shows you the dark side of Raymond, only here Ray Romano is called Joe. Joe and his college buddies, Owen and Terry, are on the wrong side of 40 and they know it.
Continue reading Men of a Certain Age -- An early look

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

James Franco's General Hospital bit is performance art?

Filed under: OpEd, Daytime, Celebrities, Casting, Reality-Free
If you had any doubt before, James Franco is taking his guest appearance on General Hospital very seriously. This isn't a stunt or a grab for attention, as some have speculated. It's not even a challenge to see if he could dip into the soap opera world and keep up with the pace and volume of a TV convention that's extremely demanding (250+ episodes a year without reruns). Well, James has written about his goals in the Wall Street Journal and for him, General Hospital is performance art.

I'm sure I'm simplifying what he's writing about because I'm not savvy about the form, but in his own words, he wrote, "I took the plunge and experimented with the form myself when I signed on to appear on 20 episodes of General Hospital as the bad-boy artist."
Continue reading James Franco's General Hospital bit is performance art?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Entourage, the movie?

Filed under: TV on the Bigscreen, OpEd, Entourage, Reality-Free

Mark Wahlberg has stated in an interview that he believes that Entourage, the HBO show in which he serves as executive producer, has two more years left in its television life before making the jump to the theatrical screen. The show has just been renewed for a sixth season.

It's not a bad idea, although the concept of a Hollywood insider movie has been done in Hollywood movies before, most notably with Robert Altman's The Player. However, it's been 17 years since that movie was released, so its ripe for recycling (It's surprising it hasn't been redone yet).

HBO has seen tremendous success with one of its franchises moving to the big screen, Sex and the City (which has a sequel on the way). On the other hand, The Sopranos hasn't made it to the big screen yet for some reason. Perhaps David Chase didn't want to ruin a perfect ending to the series.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Kristin Chenoweth's Christmas movie and Promises, Promises, too

Filed under: OpEd, Celebrities, Casting, Reality-Free, Glee

Remember back in May when I wrote about Kristin Chenoweth making a Fa La La La La Lifetime TV movie for Christmas? Well, I did, and now the picture is upon us. The 12 Men of Christmas, premieres Saturday, December 5 at 9 p.m. on Lifetime.

So on Saturday night, instead of going to a holiday party or shopping for gifts, gather around the TV and watch Kristin as E.J. Baxter, a New York publicist who comes up with the idea of a hunk calendar using the men of Montana. She goes west to find her twelve Montana men, and -- wouldn't you know it? -- she falls in love with one of the guys. Josh Hopkins from Swingtown. (S02E09) "Aren't they magnificent?" - Walter, looking at hookworms

Another creature feature! We're sort of in a "pattern," if you will, with Fringe alternating creature episodes with alternate universe episodes. It's ok, though. I probably wouldn't want all alternate universe episodes. Would you?

Wow, though. Those creatures were seriously freaky. That opening scene, among others, just made me cringe. I'm just now getting my appetite back. But this episode was more about Walter and Peter than the creatures.
Continue reading Review: Fringe - Snakehead

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: FlashForward - A561984

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, FlashForward

(S01E10) I knew FlashForward was headed toward a hiatus, but I didn't expect it to be here so soon. Thankfully, this was one of the best episodes of the season so far, pushing things dramatically forward for most of the characters and the blackout mystery, as well. We also gained more insight, and thus more confusion, about Simon and his motives.

There won't be any new episodes until March 2010, which coincidentally (or more likely, not coincidentally) is when Demetri is supposed to die, according to the Persian woman on the phone. When the show returns, will its internal continuity have jumped forward three months, as well? I have a feeling it will.

I think more may have happened in this hour than has happened in the last seven or eight episodes. Let's dig into it.
Continue reading Review: FlashForward - A561984

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Mac and Charlie Write a Movie

Filed under: OpEd, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S05E11) I think we all need to take a hot second to review what fantastic, life-improving ideas this season has presented us thus far. Earlier, we learned the benefits of funneling box wine into soda cans (beyond the immediate high class appeal of it all). Then we were schooled in the ways of the DENNIS System, allowing us to more efficiently get ladies to bang. And in this episode, we learned that keeping sausage links in your shirt pocket is a smart way to keep your hands free and open to get greasy in other ways.

This is all shaping up to be a fine education, folks. I think it goes without saying that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is Sesame Street for adults.
Continue reading Review: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Mac and Charlie Write a Movie

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Community - The Politics of Human Sexuality

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Community

(S01E11) Annie's a unicorn! Well, sorta. Actually, it's more complicated than that. And after Annie explained things, I was even more confused.

Another solid episode; this show is really in its groove right now. The new relationship Jeff has established with Britta; the one without him trying to get into her pants every week, or her accusing him of it every week; is really working for me. I like this group more as a bunch of friends than a group of potential hook-ups. At least for awhile.

Pierce took center stage in one of the three stories juggled this week, revealing to Jeff that he can score a hot chick. Even better, challenging Jeff to do the same. Annie got involved in helping Greendale throw its STD Ball, which went as well as you'd expect. And Troy and Abed -- this may be the best comedy duo on TV since J.D. and Turk.
Continue reading Review: Community - The Politics of Human Sexuality

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: 30 Rock - Dealbreakers Talk Show #0001

Filed under: OpEd, 30 Rock, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S04E07) "It still counts!" - Whoopi Goldberg, on her Daytime Emmy

I wonder how 30 Rock will handle today's deal with Comcast. I'm sure Tina Fey and the rest of the writers are already working on an episode or two about the takeover. They've already had a plot this season about budget cuts and other network moves, and I think this could be one of those weird times where a real-life event is closely tied into a fictional TV show and can actually re-energize the show in some way. That's going to be an interesting plot to watch.

Of course, the real question is, how will all of this affect the Sheinhardt Wig Company?
Continue reading Review: 30 Rock - Dealbreakers Talk Show #0001

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Eastwick - Tasers and Mind Erasers

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S01E09) "Do you remember what happened to Gloria that day? Because I do. We both have our secrets, Bun. I'll keep yours if you keep mine." - Darryl

Well, darn. As I mentioned last week, Eastwick keeps getting better and better. This week's episode was the best yet! Funny, dramatic, good characters, and some tense action at the end. And the best part is that the witches are finally realizing their powers and using them for good. If the series continued, we might see that they'd be tempted to use their powers for more nefarious purpose.

We also saw Darryl get a little more evil-ish with Bun. It made me realize that perhaps he's not the gadabout town guy who just loves women and being a big-shot. Then again, maybe he's not as bad a guy as I think (see above quote).
Continue reading Review: Eastwick - Tasers and Mind Erasers

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Nip/Tuck - Lola Wlodkowski

Filed under: OpEd, Nip/Tuck, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S06E08) "Do I need to start smoking again?!" - Kimber

With only two new episodes left in season six of Nip/Tuck (although, season seven does start right up again in January), I feel pretty confident in saying that "Lola Wlodkowski" will probably go down as the best of this penultimate season's 10 episodes.

For the most part, it stood alone in terms of plot and only loosely tied into the season's overarching arcs. And other rock icons, too. It was all part of Adam's appeal. But now that he's promoting his new CD and did a "scandalous" performance at the American Music Awards, he's really getting the Elvis treatment. There's fear that his actions, which are more graphic than anything Elvis ever did, will go too far.

Today, Adam tweeted that ABC had cancelled two more spots on the network -- his upcoming Jimmy Kimmel Live! date and a New Year's Eve performance. Adam added that nobody should blame ABC for the cancellations because it was pressure from the FCC that prompted ABC's action. So maybe we should really be blaming Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake for the infamous Super Bowl breast/costume malfunction? ABC previously dumped Adam from Good Morning America.
Continue reading ABC drops Adam Lambert again and again

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Middle - Siblings

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S01E09) Every parent wants their kids to get along. It makes things more peaceful in the house, and you can feel like you must be doing something right. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. The Heck children are so vastly different in personalities that the three of them bonding naturally is virtually impossible.

Sue is a bit of a dork, Axl is the cool kid and, as mentioned, Brick is ... Brick.

But that's not going to stop Frankie from trying, and dragging Mike along to support her. I'm glad to see Mike's honesty trait remaining strong as he supports his wife while admitting to his kids he has no idea what she's doing or why. And while her efforts didn't necessarily work at first, Mike found a way to bring the kids together. Too bad it was exhausting for the parents.
Continue reading Review: The Middle - Siblings

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

ESPN sets record with Monday's Saints-Pats game

Filed under: Sports, OpEd, Celebrities, Ratings, Reality-Free
On Monday night, ESPN had one of the best NFL match ups of the season -- the undefeated New Orleans Saints versus perennial powerhouse New England Patriots. The game was, perhaps, a preview of the Super Bowl because it's entirely possible that the Saints and the Pats could make it through the playoffs to the ultimate game.

Well, without much more than the usual hype, ESPN's Monday Night Football got the huge audience this kind of contest warrants. It was the second most-watched cable program of all time. Yes, you read that correctly. The second most-watched cable program of all time. Over 20 million total viewers -- 21.4 million -- tuned in to watch the game... which turned out to be a bit of a dud. But that doesn't matter to ESPN because they scored big time.
Continue reading ESPN sets record with Monday's Saints-Pats game

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Friday Night Lights - The Son

Filed under: OpEd, Friday Night Lights, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S04E05) When you see an episode like this one, you feel bad that Friday Night Lights has been flying under the radar when it comes to Emmy consideration. The performance by Zach Gilford as Matt was the best I've seen on TV since Aaron Paul blew me away with Breaking Bad last summer. Hopefully someone will remember him next year when it's Emmy time, and this is the show that could win it for him. He was just that good. More after the jump on Matt, Vince, Becky and the other Dillon denizens.
Continue reading Review: Friday Night Lights - The Son

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Glee - Mattress

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Glee

(S01E12) While they were in there, I told 'em to go ahead and yank out those tear ducts. Wasn't usin' 'em." - Sue Sylvester

I wouldn't say this is the best Glee episode we've had, but it had some good moments, and of course, that big reveal, which we'll talk about after the jump. The mattress scene was a nice little number, but I wasn't familiar with the song performed by Rachel and Finn, so that didn't do as much for me.

Sue Sylvester was back to true form from her compassionate scene with her sister a few episodes ago. It's hard to believe she'd have that much feeling for her sister, and yet still be a big you-know-what in the rest of her life. Glee breaks down stereotypes in some cases, but I'm not sure Sue falls into that category. She still seems like a caricature to me.
Continue reading Review: Glee - Mattress

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Top Chef - Season Finale: Part 1

Filed under: Food/Home/DIY, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Top Chef
(S06E14) Well, if you think this competition was getting easier, forget it. This is the toughest Top Chef I can remember. These final four were all excellent and as they gathered for the last leg to the finale, you could see that it was game on.

Unlike other seasons, there aren't any obvious villains in this group. Who are you rooting for? I don't know. I like them all in some ways, and yet there isn't a clear favorite either.

I like Kevin, but the Voltaggio brothers have been excellent, too. Their food really does look good enough to eat! And Jen, for all her insecurities, has been great throughout. Tonight would be a close call. (S06E20) I go into these elimination shows expecting a lot of pad and filler. But when it's a dance show, I want to see dancing; which is why I'm always a little perplexed when musical guests who don't dance show up. This week's musical guest was Snoop Dogg, and I really enjoyed it. And yes, I know that Snoop does little more than bounce and swagger.

It was that either he or the producers were smart about how to put together his stage show. Hip-hop videos are known for dancing, so why not bring that dancing to the live show? Joining Snoop on stage was Quest, a former winner of America's Best Dance Crew, as well as the dance home for three former SYTYCD contestants: Ryan, Dominic and Hok.

What about the results, though? I was surprised that even though we've switched to voting for individual dancers, it was still two couples from last night's performance show that wound up in the bottom.
Continue reading Review: So You Think You Can Dance - Top 8 Revealed

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
