But other quotes in the running were: "Can my code name be Lando Calrissian?" and "It's going to be a freaking vampire apocalypse." It is not a spoiler but a fact that CBS decided earlier this week not to pick up Moonlight for a second season. The fat lady hasn't finished quite singing yet, though: Our own Brett Love reported that Nikke Fink thinks the CW might pick up the show after all. So, keep your eyes pealed for that possible announcement.

In the meantime, however, we have the season (and, thus far, series) finale to contend with. I don't know whether the writers suspected that the series would be ending, but surely they knew (along with everyone else) that the show was on the bubble. So, they ended the season in a manner that would provide some closure for us all, while also keeping things open in case it was continued. I, for one, appreciate that.
Continue reading Moonlight: Sonata (series finale)

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Doctor Who: The Sontaran Strategem

Filed under: OpEd, Doctor Who, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
(S04E05) Yet another classic Doctor Who villain gets an update. This time it's the Sontarans in their first television appearance in 23 years.

For a revision, it's actually pretty accurate to the original series. The only difference with the Sontarans now is that they're all short. This is actually an improvement on the original series since they've always been from a heavy gravity world yet appeared at normal size (which always struck me as a little odd, unless the Sontarans we've seen historically were the professional wrestler versions).
Continue reading Doctor Who: The Sontaran Strategem

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Joey Lawrence is hosting a new dance show for TLC

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Programming, OpEd, Celebrities, Casting
TLC has a new competition series called Master of Dance (worst title ever). The show will test dancers' skills by changing the song mid-performance to measure the breadth of their repertoire and the level of their creativity. This sounds a little too much like Freezedance but for prize money. One of the worst is ET's sister show, The Insider. Besides having a despicable host (Pat O'Brien -- what's with that little fake laugh he does all the time?) and the lamest writing this side of a junior high student newspaper, it's also evil and dumb.

Take last night's episode. I don't watch the show, but I didn't get to my remote quick enough to change the channel after the news ended and I caught the teaser opening. They showed singer John Mayer with a gun to his head, a rather raw photograph that looked like it was taken across the street from a bank. Was Mayer being held hostage in a holdup? Was one of Jennifer Aniston's exes there telling him not to see her anymore? OMG! Stay tuned to this breaking news!

Continue reading I hate you, Insider TV show

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The five new shows I'm most interested in (based on the upfronts that is)

Filed under: Programming, OpEd, TV Squad Lists, Upfronts, Reality-Free

So the networks have given their upfront presentations. It's not easy to pick which shows look the best. Sure, we can base our judgments on what "type" of show we usually like anyway or a producer that's involved or someone who is in the lead. But we're still just basing it on a description (or a snippet from each show). It really comes down to the writing and the execution in general.

Having said all that, here are the shows that look great to me, based on the upfront description, the cast and crew involved, and how my tastes run in general.

The series is a dark comedy about rival gangs of suburban housewives. Most recently, Preston had a recurring role on Medium.

Preston will be playing Camilla, the leader of one of the gangs. Other cast members include Kerri Kenney and Rachael Harris. The show is based on a British series that was picked up by the Oxygen network.

The premise of the series sounds good. It's a bit like Desperate Housewives meet Boys In The Hood. I envision a scene in which the housewives rumble like the rival gangs in The Warriors. While the premise works, its success depends on the execution of the idea.

There is one thing that can be confidently said about this new series. The show couldn't possibly be worse that one of she and her husband's previous efforts, Battlefield Earth.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Daily Show: May 15, 2008 - VIDEOS

Filed under: OpEd, The Daily Show, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
So, John Edwards finally made his endorsement announcement and it looks like he is a Barack Obama type of guy. In short, they really don't bother me.

Since I write about TV and movies, I have a work-related TV in my office, and I use those few minutes here and there to slam through some work or get caught up on whatever show I'm recapping. In fact, while watching commercial-free shows on HBO and Showtime, I actually miss those little interludes.

But, apparently, Fox hasn't been peering through my window, because at their upfront presentation yesterday morning, they announced their "Remote-Free TV" idea. Two new dramas, J.J. Abrams' Fringe and Joss Whedon's Dollhouse, will air with reduced network commercial breaks -- just five minutes per hour, or about half the usual.
Continue reading Fox trims commercials on Fringe and Dollhouse

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

ER: The Chicago Way (season finale)

Filed under: OpEd, ER, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S14E19) Now, let the speculation begin!

Did you really think that ER would end its fourteenth season with everything all honky-dory at County General? You haven't watched it recently, have you? Fact is, the season-ender for the last few years has been some sort of cliffhanger. Last season the fate of Neela was unknown. The year before it was Abby and Luka. A few years before that the fates of Pratt and Jing-Mei were undecided.

Now we have two (or three, or four) characters to consider as potential victims. But, who will be the lucky -- or in this case, unlucky -- one who will end up as a patient in their very own Emergency Room when season 15 of ER begins? Let's take a look at the candidates. Oh, by the way, spoilers ahead if you didn't watch the last three minutes of the episode.

Coming out of the comedy club, a woman who wasn't at the show checked me out. I heard her say helloooooo in a guttural way, like I was a really good looking guy. A few seconds later, though, once she got a better look at me, she said, "Never mind." Then, she and her friends laughed for as long as I could hear them.

Apparently, I'm only good looking when someone is looking at me out of the corner of her eye.

I bring this up not to inform you that I'm unattractive -- my blogger profile photo does a better job of informing you of that than I ever could -- but rather because I didn't think I could be any more depressed than I was after that comment. I honestly thought their derisive laughter was going to be the low-point of my evening.
I don't know what to think anymore. You know, at the end of Grey's Anatomy when you see the title card for Shonda Rhimes' production company? Have you noticed what it is? Shondaland? It's a roller coaster. How appropriate. I mean, don't get me wrong. Even though I feel like everything on TV is still getting sort of a free pass to some extent due to post writer's strike "hey, at least it's new" syndrome, this was actually a great episode... for the most part. Which I suppose could be interpreted as getting a free pass due to "hey, at least there was a lesbian kiss" syndrome.

Here's a few tidbits from the interview:

About Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus, Hardin says that she's acting like a normal fifteen-year-old and "I think it's more a question of her handlers protecting her image."

Melora Hardin also talks about her new movie (which her husband wrote and she directed) called You. It's a coming of age story about a father and daughter. Hardin, her husband, her parents, and her children are in it.

Hardin admits that she herself has had an office relationship. Her husband! She met him at a wrap party, "So I guess you could consider that an office romance, being that wrap parties are part of my office setting."

I'm grateful that shows like Lost still have new episodes, but the second half of this TV season hasn't felt the same. I especially miss the promising new series that were cut short.

It feels like other shows have been on hiatus forever. Flight of the Conchords was supposed to return this year, but had its premiere pushed back until 2009. I miss Bret, Jemaine, and their strange circle of friends. I've been wondering about the fates of several absent characters lately. So many storylines were left unresolved.

Here's a short list of some of the faces I can't wait to see again:
Continue reading Characters I'm missing right now

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

RuPaul's Drag Race heads to Logo

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, OpEd, Web, Pickups and Renewals
What must it be like to be RuPaul? The network executives who are his masters have decided to give Duane "Dog" Chapman a second chance after he was caught on tape saying racial slurs about one of his son's girlfriends. A&E spokeman Michael Feeney even said that he believed Chapman wasn't a racist.

The show involves Chapman and his crew (which includes his fifth wife Beth and some of his kids) chasing down bail jumpers in Hawaii and other states. He previously had gotten in trouble with the Mexican government for his actions (bounty hunting is illegal in that country).

When I think of Dog the Bounty Hunter, I tend to think of the satire done on an episode of South Park when Cartman played Dog (loved it when Cartman parodied the philosophical rhetoric of Chapman which he does while taking prisoners to jail). Reruns will begin on A&E on June 25th with original episodes starting a few weeks later.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

America's Next Top Model: And the Winner Is...
Okay, that's not entirely accurate. The photos of Whitney and Anya are perfectly fine, but my hatred for the individual in the center pretty much taints the picture for me.

More on that after the jump.

Married to the Kellys was a sitcom that ran on Friday nights on ABC during the 2003-04 season, part of their TGIF comedy lineup. But I think this show stood out as something for adults more than kids. It starred Breckin Meyer as a New York City writer who publishes his first novel and decides to keep his promise to his wife and move (he thought she meant move from the Village to the Upper West Side, not "America"). Now, this is where the usual big city guy vs. Kansas jokes come into play, but that's just half of the show.

Continue reading Short-Lived Shows: Married to the Kellys - VIDEOS

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Daily Show: May 13, 2008 - VIDEOS

Filed under: OpEd, The Daily Show, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia recently appeared on CSPAN's Q&A and grumpily talked about The Daily Show's childish material. I always remember Scalia as one of the only people that cracked up on camera during Stephen Colbert's 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner performance, so I still like to pretend that he's secretly a TDS/TCR fan. Also, does anyone else here have the America book? My copy has an unusual tendency to open right on the naked Supreme Court when I just randomly pick a page. They must have done something sneaky to the binding.
Continue reading The Daily Show: May 13, 2008 - VIDEOS

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Super Skank Wednesday: A round-up of some skanky ongoings - VIDEOS

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, OpEd, Video, Episode Reviews, Super Skank Wednesday
Welcome to Super Skank Wednesday.
