(S15E09) Things got a bit down and dirty tonight on The Amazing Race. I'm talking more ways than one. As the promos for the episode showed, we had muddy bogs and a quasi-skirmish between two teams tonight. There are five teams left in the race at this time. Two of the teams are definitely vying for the alpha male rating on the show. And I'm not talking Brian and Ericka! Any previous alliances are gone in the wind as the teams try to get to the precious final three. Take no prisoners.
Continue reading Review: The Amazing Race - We're Not Meant for the Swamp

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Desperate Housewives - The Coffee Cup

Filed under: OpEd, Desperate Housewives, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S06E08) "I could see shooting someone over you." - The judge to Mike

This week, Susan had to face the fact that she accidentally shot Katherine a few weeks back. Sadly for Susan, she had to face a judge who had humor when giving sentences and who allowed Katherine to say a few words before sentencing Susan. As expected, things didn't turn out the way Susan would have wanted them to turn out. However, Susan got exactly the type of sentence that offered us some fun war scenes between Katherine and her.
Continue reading Review: Desperate Housewives - The Coffee Cup

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Prisoner - Part Two: Harmony

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(E02) The whole strategy behind the Village has been turned on its head and it's certainly interesting to watch. Two is bound and determined to have everyone who lives there believe that the Village is all there is, there is no world outside of the Village and the Village is all they've ever known. He's even got tangible proof to back that up.

It's an interesting change from the original, and again makes you wonder just who would be willing to invest this kind of money into a bizarre prison like this. Is the citizenry drugged, or just brainwashed? Why is Six so adamant that he is not a number, he is a free man, if no one else in the village is so sure? Or are they just being more quiet about it?

We've even reached the point in the series where as a viewer I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is real, much less what Six is seeing and experiencing. But it was nice to meet his brother and see that he has a family in the Village. "Uncle Six" indeed.
Continue reading Review: The Prisoner - Part Two: Harmony

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Prisoner - Part One: Arrival

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, British TV

(E01) I can't help but feel tempted to compare this to the Patrick McGoohan classic from the '60s, but that wouldn't be fair. Attitudes, technologies and even our expectations of TV programming have changed so much in the intervening time. And yet, as an homage to the original, there are many elements to this new AMC mini-series that nod back to the classic paranoia suspense saga.

While The Village has been updated to be a much larger and more vibrant desert oasis (think kitschy Las Vegas) than the original's sleepy seaside villas, it's still as much an enigma, even in this first hour. And while Jim Caviezel doesn't command the role of Number 6 as powerfully as McGoohan, really who could? So I give him a pass, and enjoy him for what he brings, and try not to hear McGoohan's booming defiance when Caviezel shouts: "I am not a number! I am a free man!"
Continue reading Review: The Prisoner - Part One: Arrival

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

What would you do if you were Oprah?

Filed under: Industry, OpEd, Daytime, Celebrities, Talk Show, Reality-Free
There's a lot of speculation in the biz about what will Oprah do next. The daytime talk show giant supposedly made up her mind recently and decided that her syndicated show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, would end its run in syndication and move to OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network (formerly Discovery Health). An official announcement is anticipated before the end of the year, but is that really was Oprah has decided? Nobody knows for certain.

There are pros and cons on either side. The companies that syndicated her talk show stand to lose a significant asset if she wraps up the current incarnation and abandons the market. Think of all those afternoon hours around that country that count on Oprah at three or four o'clock, or the morning slots where Oprah leads in to noon newscasts. Companies like CBS Distribution and the Tribune Company have feasted on the robust ratings Oprah has consistently delivered.
Continue reading What would you do if you were Oprah?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Prisoner -- An early look

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
The first thing I noticed about AMC's reboot of the classic Patrick McGoohan series The Prisoner was its style. The original is a very stylized piece of work, but as someone who didn't see it back in 1967-1968 when it first aired -- I'm not that old! -- I'm not sure if its visual presentation was wholly unique in itself, or more a reflection of the '60s style in general. Certainly the '60s have become infamous for some weird fashion and design choices.

Some of that '60s nostalgia creeped into the architecture and dress of the Villagers this time around without overwhelming the tone, and I think it's a wonderful homage to the original. But I'm more impressed that this re-imagining manages to capture the same sense of paranoia and confusion that the first did, without simply retelling the same story in the same way. And it's those differences that are truly modernizing the story in a great way.
Continue reading The Prisoner -- An early look

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Ghost Whisperer - Dead Listing

Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S05E08) "How did you find this one?" - Det. Sam Blair to Melinda and Eli

Eli and Melinda quickly came up with a fake story as to why they often discover bodies or are around crime scenes. Detective Blair bought it this time but it wouldn't surprising if she decides to dig a little deeper to get real answers. After years of being around deceased, one would expect that the Grandview police would start investigating why Melinda, and now Eli, are involved in a lot of their cases, no?

While we wait for Det. Blair to start to investigate Melinda and Eli, we are treated to one of the wackiest and lightest episode of the season thanks to Greg Germann and Perrey Reeves guesting on the episode.
Continue reading Review: Ghost Whisperer - Dead Listing

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Michael Moorcock to write Doctor Who story

Filed under: OpEd, Doctor Who, Celebrities, Reality-Free
Fantasy novelist Michael Moorcook will be writing a Doctor Who story. No, it won't be a script for the actual television show bur rather an original novel. He revealed this on his forum.

The mind boggles with regards to what a fantasy novelist like Moorcock could do with Doctor Who. He's used to antihero creations like Elric. Any spin he could put on the character would be interesting. As of yet, it's not even known which incarnation of The Doctor he'll be writing about.

The most appropriate Doctor for Moorcock to write about could be the first (played by William Hartnell), who had a subtle arrogance and sinister nature (arguably the least human of the bunch). I'd personally like to read a sixth Doctor story by Moorcock.

Moorcock has influenced legendary writers like Alan Moore. Whatever take he has on the Doctor Who universe will at least be interesting. What do you think?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Monk - Mr. Monk is the Best Man

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S08E13) Just three more episodes till the end of Monk, so it sort of feels like they're wrapping up some loose ends. Tonight, the focus was on Leland Francis Stottlemeyer, Monk's best friend, the guy who has been solidly behind Adrian through all the difficult years since Trudy's death, helping Monk to cope and remain gainfully employed as a police consultant.

Leland's always been a good guy, but not so lucky in love. As the title suggested, if Mr. Monk is the best man, that means that Leland was the groom. More about the nuptials after the jump.
Continue reading Review: Monk - Mr. Monk is the Best Man

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: White Collar - Flip of the Coin

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S01E04) "Yeah, and I didn't even have to go to prison first." - Lauren, after Caffrey pointed out that she just joined the team

I want Neal Caffrey's life. He gets out of jail by promising to help the FBI with cases with his expertise in ... well, just about everything. And he gets to do it from the penthouse apartment of an incredibly cool Manhattan mansion. This is a lesson for all the kids out there. If you are going to be a criminal, make sure those crimes are in fields where the U.S. government will have no choice but to take you out of jail and have you help them because they can't solve cases without you.

Oh, and I also want Peter Burke's dog.
Continue reading Review: White Collar - Flip of the Coin

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

American Idol's Kara DioGuardi on Paula and Ellen

Filed under: OpEd, American Idol, Celebrities, Judges
If Kara DioGuardi has her way, she and Ellen DeGeneres will be hitting it off like franks and beans, peanut butter and jelly, frick and frack... two peas in a pod. At at an industry conference in New York, Kara was musing about the upcoming season of American Idol in which DioGuardi and DeGeneres will be sharing the judges' table together -- with Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell, of course.

"I'm hoping the chemistry with Ellen will be great -- and a great start to the season," said Kara.

With that in mind, Kara's going to sleep on the couch at Ellen's house until they're bosom buddies. ...Kidding! But Kara will try to spend some time with Ellen during December when they both have some time off from their busy schedules.
Continue reading American Idol's Kara DioGuardi on Paula and Ellen

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Fringe - Of Human Action

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Fringe

(S02E07) "Truthfully, I really don't spend a lot of time thinking about what human brains would taste like." Astrid to Walter, while he's dissecting a brain

As with last week, this episode of Fringe wasn't completely centered on the alternate universe and its goings-on, but that's ok. We still got plenty of good stuff to tie us over to next week, when it's all about The Observers.

What struck me most about this episode in terms of relationships is how broken up Walter was over the loss of his son. As mentioned in my other reviews this season, Walter is like the kid and Peter is the parent. John Noble does a fantastic job of portraying a scared kid who's lost his dad in a department store. I've said it before, and will again: He deserves an Emmy and whatever other awards are out there.
Continue reading Review: Fringe - Of Human Action

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

CBS plans Super Bowl halftime and... what comes on after the game

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Sports, Industry, Programming, OpEd, Survivor, Music and Variety, Celebrities, Ratings, NCIS, The Mentalist, The Big Bang Theory

"Did you hear who's going to play during the Super Bowl halftime show?"

Okay, I couldn't resist the nod to Abbott and Costello's Who's On First. But the fact is that Sports Illustrated has spread the word that The Who will star in the Super Bowl big, overblown half-time pageant. This follows the safe pattern the NFL has been employing since the Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake costume malfunction; that is, stick with classic rock stars who are guaranteed to do their hits and not disrobe. That's why we've had Prince, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and now The Who. All superstar acts, no controversy.
Continue reading CBS plans Super Bowl halftime and... what comes on after the game

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia - Mac and Dennis Break Up

Filed under: OpEd, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Episode Reviews

(S05E09) Well. This episode was certainly successful in further quelling the doubts of any audience members that are still, for whatever reason, unconvinced that all the guys from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia are actually super-gay for each other. Yeah, not just "gay" but "super-gay." Considering the adorable, almost symbiotic nature of the guys' relationships, I would probably just refer to them as "hetero lifemates," but Frank and Charlie play Nightcrawlers and we all know what happened onstage between Dayman and Nightman in "The Nightman Cometh." Don't fight it.
Continue reading Review: It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia - Mac and Dennis Break Up

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Charlie's Angels returning to TV?

Filed under: Programming, OpEd, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free
Josh Friedman, the creator behind Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, is now getting behind another movie franchise to bring to ABC. This time it's Charlie's Angels. Okay, this one started as a television franchise then moved to the movies and now is moving back to TV. Well, you get the idea.

Also involved would be Leonard Goldberg, who worked with Aaron Spelling to produce the original series, and Drew Barrymore, who produced and starred in the movie versions. My guess is that this new version would something like Charlie's Angels: The Next Generation. Will John Forsythe return as the voice of Charlie? I hope so.

Revival-mania continues strong on network television. Success has been a mixed bag. For every Battlestar Galactica there are several Bionic Womans. A new version of Charlie's Angels certainly has a shot in today's market and the movies did well. Aaron Spelling tried to revive the franchise in '88 and that didn't work. Now could be a better time. The Addams Family is coming back. No, this times it's not a TV series, nor a motion picture. No, this time Broadway is taking Charles Addams' amazing dysfunctional gothic family and putting their antics to music. That's right, The Addams Family is becoming a Broadway musical.

One of the things that sounds really promising about the musical is the casting. The two leads seem perfect for their roles -- Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia. They're both like cartoon characters already, and in that bizarro world, they should be right at home. Hams on parade ... with music! It sounds glorious.
Continue reading The Addams Family's latest incarnation is a Broadway musical

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

For All My Children's 40th anniversary, Julia Barr and more will be back

Filed under: OpEd, Daytime, Casting, Emmys, Reality-Free
There's reason to be hopeful about All My Children's move to Hollywood. Oh, yes, Thorsten Kaye has decided not to go -- bye, bye Zach -- but there's a list of stars lining up for the anniversary that's pretty spectacular.

In honor of All My Children's 40th Anniversary, Julia Barr is coming back as Brooke English. Also slated to appear are a bunch of other former AMC stars, including Eva LaRue, Taylor Miller, Laurence Lau, Eden Riegel, Leven Rambin and the previously announced Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos.

Julia's return is a big get because she was such big part of the soap for so long. The two-time Emmy winner was on AMC from 1976 to her exit in 2006. This anniversary show will be a chance for fans to hear what Brooke -- Erica's rival for all those years -- has been up to.

Next in line is Eva LaRue. She's become a prime time star with CSI: Miami. She did two stints with AMC as Dr. Maria Santos Grey.
Continue reading For All My Children's 40th anniversary, Julia Barr and more will be back

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Vampire Diaries - History Repeating

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Vampire Diaries

(S01E09) I was pretty much riveted to this episode of The Vampire Diaries all the way through, but especially at the end, when we learned a whole lot of stuff in the last few minutes. It was fun seeing the vamp brothers Stefan and Damon sort of buddy up, even if it wasn't really real. Given their long history, you have to think there must be some brotherly ... something there, even though Damon killed Stefan's BFF last week and then Stefan nearly killed Damon. Oh those kooky vampire brothers.
Continue reading Review: The Vampire Diaries - History Repeating

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Project Runway - Finale, Part I

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, OpEd, Project Runway, Episode Reviews

(S06E13) Project Runway's part one of their finale episodes are always boring. This episode was no exception. We learn more about the hopefuls' backgrounds, peek at their final collection, Tim critiques them, they come to New York, and get some bombshell in one form or another.

This year's bomb is recycled from season two: a last minute thirteenth piece with the help of an eliminated contestant. This time, the muse model picks their final model.

The first half of the show was all about watching Tim in awkward situations: struggling to use a freight elevator, baking biscuits, and interacting with dogs.
Continue reading Review: Project Runway - Finale, Part I

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Community - Debate 109

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Community
(S01E9) Do you think the fact that this was the ninth episode of the first season had anything to do with that number in the episode title? I'm sure there could be a Debate 109 class in college, but I don't believe in coincidences that big. I do, however, believe that I really enjoyed this outing. It was nice to see Jeff buckling down and doing some work.

It's odd that he wouldn't have done that in the legal profession. Or maybe he was just used to his Legal Assistant doing all the research for him and just hitting him up with the highlights. Either way, I can't believe that he thought singing in a debate would work. Come on, Jeff.

The rest of the episode featured the return of Abed's student films. Only this time, there's something a little eerie about them, and it's freaking everybody out. And it's not just that he found people in the school who look incredibly similar to every member of the study group.
Continue reading Review: Community - Debate 109

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
