You know the show is going to be all urban and edgy because they used a "Z" instead of an "S." That's how all the cool kidz do it, you know. Since I'm actually cooler than anyone, I've stopped using the letter S completely in my daily life:

Me: Excuze me, I want to order a zandwich, and I want plenty of muztard and mayonnaize, pleaze. And a zausage patty, but not too zpicy, becauze my tongue is zenzitive.

You can watch a trailer for the new series here, which premieres on MTV April 5 at 9:30 p.m. Apparently, they decided to make a trailer using only the unfunny bits from the show, or maybe those were the funny parts. I don't pretend to know everything about comedy, especially the painfully unfunny kind.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Andy returns, and he's funnier

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Web, MTV

I've said before I'm kind of an intermittent fan of the Andy Milonakis Show, but after seeing the season three premiere in which Andy first arrives in Los Angeles, I have to say that the show has improved greatly. If you hated Andy before, you'll probably still hate him, since his brand of humor isn't for everyone, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much more fully realized the show now seems. The first season had some very funny moments, but it seemed to lack focus, as if it wasn't sure what it was trying to be. I think both Andy and his show have finally found themselves, and Milonakis may have figured out a way to turn his penchant for oddball non sequiturs and general nonsense into real, honest to goodness comedy. Our little weirdo has finally become a butterfly, with peanut butter on his hands ("peanut butter slap")!

The six season three episodes are available on iTunes and will also be made available on MTV2.com and MTV.com.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Punk'd to end with a one-day marathon

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, MTV, Cancellations
Ashton Kutcher's prank show on MTV is coming to an end after eight seasons, according to Variety. MTV plans to air the entire final season during one day -- April 7th -- with back-to-back new episodes. The network is calling it a sneak preview, where it will air all eight episodes before the official premiere date of the last season of Punk'd. The episodes will also air weekly starting April 10 at 9 pm.

This season, Punk'd reportedly pranks Lost's Evangeline Lilly, Hilary Swank, Nelly Furtado, Magic Johnson, and... Ashton Kutcher. Hopefully that'll be the series finale, where Ashton gets his due for "punking" other celebs for so many years (the Justin Timberlake episode was legendary).

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Evangeline Lilly gets Punk'd

Filed under: ABC, Lost, Celebrities, MTV

Evangeline Lilly has fallen victim to Ashton Kutcher and his Punk'd gang. The Lost actress will appear on the newest (and supposedly last) season of the MTV prank show, along with fellow celebrities Hilary Swank, Magic Johnson, and Nelly Furtado. Lilly's episode will be aired in an eight-episode marathon of the show on April 7. Each episode will be aired individually beginning on April 10.

No word yet on how Lilly was punk'd. Perhaps they switched Dominic Monaghan with Billy Boyd and waited for her to notice. MTV is promoting this season as the show's last, but fake announcements about the show's cancellation have been released before. A similar claim was made after the 2003 season of Punk'd, but the show returned in 2004. A Punk'd Awards highlight special covering all past seasons is scheduled for June 5.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Casting begins for what may be The Real World's last season

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, MTV
Casting for the 20th season of The Real World is underway, and get this, they're looking for people with ambitions and career goals. Apparently, the drinking, whoring version of The Real World is on the way out. They're looking for "aspiring actors, models, dancers, filmmakers, musicians, athletes, artists, journalists, stylists and fashion designers" or any youngin' with "interesting career goals." The Real World's producers don't have a contract with MTV beyond the 20th season. That's not to say that they won't eventually strike a deal, but it looks like Bunim-Murray is trying a return to form by assembling a cast of literate people whose desires include more than a pitcher of Mega-ritas and a hot tub threesome.

So, if you're between the ages of 18 and 24, this may be your last chance to live in a house with a bunch of strangers, have your life taped and humiliate your parents. (Just kidding, you're young. You'll have plenty of more chances to disappoint your parents.) Casting news is available online at Bunim-Murray's casting website.

[Via Reality Blurred]

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Who wants to be an MTV guest host?

Filed under: Cable, Music and Variety, MTV

MTV is really getting into this whole idea of TV viewers also becoming TV content providers. First they add a new viewer video category for the MTV Movie Awards, and now they're looking for guest hosts for Total Request Live.

Fans of the show have to answer six questions to enter, including which celebrity that they'd pick to star as in a movie about their life, who they would pick for the ultimate TRL guest list, and how they would describe TRL to someone who has never seen the show before (that last one is easy: they play music videos, a celeb comes on, and the kids in the audience go nutso). MTV and Acuvue will pick four winners who will each host a day in May.

You also have to upload a picture of yourself. So please, make sure you're attractive.

More exactly: the best movie spoof created by a viewer and uploaded to Yahoo! Movies.

Starting April 23, folks can upload their spoofs to a special site on Yahoo! Movies, which will feature the usual interactivity associated with user content and Web 2.0. No, you can't lock him up for simply being an idiot. He actually had to do something, like punch a city employee and a tow truck driver. Last year, the 20-year old co-star of The Hills and Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County blew his top when a tow truck was blocking the road as the driver tried to move an illegally parked car. Wahler reportedly got out of his vehicle and yelled racial slurs at the city worker and tow truck driver (both of them black) and then actually punched them both before being subdued. Blood-alcohol tests show Wahler's level was .22.

On top of his two months in jail, pretty boy will also have to attend a one-day program at the Museum of Intolerance. The judge was probably pretty strict with the guy because he was recently arrested in North Carolina for underage drinking and resisting arrest.

Sounds like a great role model for the impressionable MTV crowd.

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

MTV getting the hang of this whole Web video thing

Filed under: Music and Variety, Web, MTV

Whatever you may have thought of Napster and file sharing, one thing is clear: it changed the way people think about how music is both marketed and distributed. In much the same way, sites like YouTube have changed how people watch television. These days people have more options than simply plopping down on the couch when their favorite show airs, as the Web offers them different ways (both legally and not-so-legally) to see their favorite programs.

Continue reading MTV getting the hang of this whole Web video thing

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

MTV orders first drama in five years

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, MTV, Pickups and Renewals
MTV may finally be backing away from its plethora of reality programs, which are all beginning to see a decline in ratings. The network has given the greenlight to - gasp! - a drama. It's the first scripted series for the network in five long years.

The half-hour drama is called Kaya and it's about a teen-age girl who, along with her band members, becomes a rock star. This is a little more along the lines of the whole music television theme, unlike the mid-1990s teen angst drama, My So-Called Life. In case you were wondering, the last scripted series to air on MTV were 2002's Undressed and 2001's 2Gether.

Danielle Savre has signed on to star in Kaya. You may remember her as 'Jackie Wilcox' from her brief run as the cheerleader-who-got-killed-instead-of-Claire on Heroes.

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Say goodbye to Oliver, but did you love or hate him?

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, ABC, FOX, CBS, The O.C., Syndicated, The CW, MTV

<img height="200" alt="Oliver Trask is a despised TV character. MTV understood this need, and that's why they gave us Total Request Live (or TRL as the cool kids call it).

In the wake of an announcement by Viacom that it would be cutting nearly 250 jobs from its music networks, rumors began to circulate that TRL would be taken off the air, but according to a rep from MTV, those rumors are not true. Regardless, TRL has seen a decline as of late, and Variety reports that interactive sites like YouTube and MySpace are partly to blame, as they provide a more personal mode of interactivity.

Continue reading TRL isn't going anywhere

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

MTV to offer embeddable videos

Filed under: Music and Variety, Web, MTV

In the wake of Viacom's demand that all of its content be removed from YouTube and Google Video, another one of the company's properties will be offering embeddable online videos: MTV. Comedy Central began offering the same not too long ago, and it would be nice if the rest of the dominoes would fall and everyone would automatically equip all online videos with this function. Of course, that probably gets into some kind of legal mumbo jumbo that might cause my brain to explode, and if I can remember one thing my mother told me, it's this: "son, I am not going to clean your brains off the wall because you thought too hard about something."

In between trying to figure out who they are and what matters in life, there is a chorus of parents, teachers, people and pitchmen telling them what to think and what to do...please keep fighting for them and thinking of them in the fine work that you all do."
Continue reading Gideon Yago leaving MTV

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Reality stars hate on the haters online

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Web, Celebrities, MTV
I guess the confidentiality clause that reality TV participants sign only cover the show's results and not how the participants feel about the show's proceedings. If you're in the market for some meta-commentary on currently airing reality programs, look no further than the dozens of MySpace pages, blogs and Face Book entries kept by various shows' competitors.

You can read about why Dasit skipped out of the Egotrip White Rapper Show's 16-bar challenge ("...had to step before it got too corny...") or what Beauty and the Geek's Neils Hoven thinks of the show's editing ("...if anything, people's personalities have been rather understated so far..."). Despite the wealth of competition, the hands-down best blog entry by a reality show competitor on a currently airing program has to be this Tuesday's screed from I'm from Rolling Stone's Krishtine de Leon.
Continue reading Reality stars hate on the haters online

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Five: The reality shows you should be watching

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Cable, OpEd, The Five, The CW, Discovery, MTV, VH1
Reality shows are an easy target. At their worst, they combine narcissistic competitors in a state of arrested development with manipulative editing and piss poor production values. They are base, coarse, often times racist and tedious beyond belief. They bring out the worst in us - our collective desire to see other people humiliated.

Fortunately, all reality shows are not the same. I mean, would Tim Gunn be involved in anything that wasn't a class act? Shows like Project Runway and, to some extent, The Amazing Race redeem an otherwise unfortunate genre littered with wife-swaps, cat fights, strangers picked to live in a house and competitive testicle eating. There is plenty of good among the bad, and in my neck of the woods, certain reality shows are as much "must see TV" as any scripted program. I'm looking for the same thing in both anyway - emotional truth.
Continue reading The Five: The reality shows you should be watching

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Burnett to produce a live version of the MTV Movie Awards

Filed under: Industry, Music and Variety, Celebrities, MTV
The king of all mind-numbingly addictive media Mark Burnett has been signed by MTV to produce this year's MTV Movie Awards. Ratings for the annual masturbatory celebration of mainstream media and young Hollywood have been slipping for the past several years. MTV is hoping that Burnett, who has never produced an award's show before, will shake things up. His first step in that direction - airing the show live. While Burnett will keep the zany movie parodies and kooky categories, he's trying to turn down the slick and get the stars to go "off-prompter." Burnett and MTV are also talking about upping the buzzworthiness of the program by incorporating user-generated content into the proceedings.
Continue reading Burnett to produce a live version of the MTV Movie Awards

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

I'm from Rolling Stone's online writing contest

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Web, MTV
Cops hate cop shows. Doctors hate doctor shows. Comedy writers hate Studio 60, and the media is loving to hate I'm from Rolling Stone. Everyone from Idolator to Salon is lining up to spank Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner and his ridiculous charges, but that's just because they're jealous. When they started out as interns back in the day, they didn't get to rock the red carpet events and see their bylines the next day. They chose the path of hard work to achieve their journalistic dreams when they should have chosen the far more lucrative and entertaining path of reality television.

You don't have to repeat those bitter journalists' mistakes. You can choose a path somewhere in between. I'm from Rolling Stone has started an online writing contest.
Continue reading I'm from Rolling Stone's online writing contest

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
