The 48 hours after Michael Jackson's death was just such an epoch. I chose that last word carefully because the endless, maudlin, self-congratulatory coverage the major news networks wallowed in following Jackson's death was as long-winded as it was embarrassingly dramatic.

While that coverage is sure to continue throughout the memorial services, unavoidable custody and estate battles and forthcoming autopsy reports, none of that will compare in sickly sweet sensation to what CNN, Fox News and the others lowered themselves to just following the singer's death.
Continue reading Media stoops to honor Wacko Jacko

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

FX is not picking up The Norm MacDonald Reality Show

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Industry, Programming, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free

Yesterday FX announced their fall premiere dates along with the news that an untitled new half-hour comedy would be launched and paired with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Nothing else was announced about this yet-to-be-named series, but thanks to our reader Jared, we now have an idea of what it may be:

The Norm MacDonald Reality Show.

Nothing has come down from FX regarding this in terms of a pilot greenlight or series pick up, but according to Norm himself? He seems to think it's a go.

Continue reading FX is not picking up The Norm MacDonald Reality Show

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Cowell hunting a cash cow before returning to American Idol

Filed under: Industry, American Idol, Celebrities, Judges
If Simon Cowell decides to stay in his judge's chair on American Idol, he'll have to squeak along on a salary of more than $100 million.

The U.K. and U.S. tabloid press reports that Cowell is negotiating for more than $140 million to return to Idol. That's just a slight raise over the reported $36 million he made for sitting on his backside and ridiculing warbling wannabes last year.

Who knew being aggressively obnoxious and judgmental could pay off so well?
With Rescue Me set to end it's 22 episode fifth season on Tuesday, September 1st, it comes as no surprise that Sons of Anarchy has been scheduled to fill the Tuesday 10PM ET time-slot starting the very next week on September 8th. The motorcycle drama's sophomore season is generating a lot of buzz ever since the announcement of Henry Rollins and Adam Arkin joining the cast.

Me too. And did you just about give up on the show after it eventually lost most of its charm and became a depressing, unfunny raunch fest? Me too. That's probably why I'm not too excited about Earl creator Greg Garcia's new show.

Fox just picked up Garcia's untitled single-camera comedy. The show will revolve around a young man raising an infant, the result of a one-night stand with a death row inmate, with the help of his dysfunctional family. Garcia tells Variety that his new characters will be "the same type of people" we saw in Earl and that they'll inhabit a world not unlike Earl's hometown of Camden.

Count me out if the show will rely on the same mean-spirited bathroom and gross out humor we saw in the last few seasons of Earl. Hopefully, Garcia will deliver something fun, fresh and clever instead of rehashing the same crude jokes and stories that got his old show cancelled.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Real Housewives of NJ gets a second season

Filed under: Industry, Programming, OpEd, Video, Pickups and Renewals
If I go to Hell after I die, I'm quite certain that part of my eternal punishment would be sitting in a room with all the Real Housewives of New Jersey for all eternity. Therefore the following piece of news is about as close to Hell on Earth as I can get: popular rumor has it that Bravo has renewed The Real Housewives of New Jersey for a second season.

I was born and bred in New Jersey (those of you offering condolences can shut it right now. I like New Jersey). As a result of sharing my humble abode with someone of the female persuasion, I have been subjected to this program. I can personally attest that very few people in New Jersey actually act like these "housewives". If you're planning a vacation, please don't let the behaviors of these women put you off from visiting the Garden State.

However, to give credit, the program did lead to a funny sketch on Chelsea Lately. The video of that is after the jump.
Continue reading The Real Housewives of NJ gets a second season

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Noah Wyle officially boards Spielberg's alien-invasion pilot

Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Industry, Celebrities, Casting, Reality-Free
Noah Wyle is going from fighting vampires in The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice to fighting aliens for Steven Spielberg. She helped make Star Trek: Voyager watchable for a while as a self-aware Borg and recently starred in CBS' Shark alongside James Woods. But it was her work on the David Kelley shows Boston Public and Boston Legal that has me thinking she'll be a good fit for Leverage.

The actress handled Kelley's sharp dialogue like a pro, and I'm guessing she'll bring the same confidence to her role as a "smart-ass, street-wise con woman" on the second season of Leverage. Ryan has signed on for a recurring role on the TNT heist drama. The giant show floor was packed with sweaty costumed fans, big geek friendly displays, and a few not-so incognito celebs. Folks at home got a small taste of all the corporate sponsored nerdery thanks to G4's daily coverage. This year, G4 will air the first televised panel in the convention's history.

Attack of the Show hosts Olivia Munn and Kevin Pereira will host "The Star Wars Spectacular." The taped panel will feature special guests, a table read and new footage from Cartoon Network's Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The panel will take place July 24 and air July 25 at 2 p.m. on G4. After the panel broadcast, G4 will air three live hours (on the East Coast) of Comic-Con coverage with celeb interviews and more.
Continue reading G4 to air Star Wars Comic-Con panel

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

NBC announces fall premiere dates

It's always great to hear the fall premiere dates for shows. Now we're reading rumors about a possible Smallville TV movie called Metropolis that could serve as a coda to the show's ninth, and probably final, season.

The rumor -- and I repeat: rumor -- comes from the boys at AICN who say a source got a glimpse of some Smallville promotional signage for the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con. Reportedly, the source, who goes by the handle "Yoda's Bitch," eyed some signage somewhere, presumably on the planet Earth, featuring the words "Metropolis: Christmas 2010" in Smallville-style font. The sign is also supposedly advertising Smallville's upcoming Comic-Con panel. AICN says they have info that this possible Metropolis project could be a TV movie set to head into production after May 2010. Read more at SciFi Squad.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Rescue Me gets the "how'd they do that?" treatment

Filed under: Industry, Rescue Me, Reality-Free

This is pretty cool, especially since you don't usually get to see or read about stuff like this until you're watching a featurette on a DVD set.

For those that didn't catch last night's episode of Rescue Me ("Disease," S05E12), the opening scene featured a very cool fire sequence in which Tommy, Franco, Black Shawn, and Mike had to escape a burning apartment hallway. The entire sequence was eerily cut to the high-pitched vocals of Duffy and her song "Syrup & Honey," but what came across as most impressive was how real it all looked.

Continue reading Rescue Me gets the "how'd they do that?" treatment

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Jessica Simpson's new reality show finds a home

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Industry, Celebrities, Pickups and Renewals
We warned you about Jessica Simpson's latest idea for a reality TV show back in May. The pop star was shopping around a project starring herself called The Price of Beauty in which "she and a friend set off on a road trip around the world in search of what people find beautiful and why," according to an US Weekly source.

It looks like the show is moving ahead and is set to air on VH1, the home of celebrity trash TV, sometime in 2010. Simpson will travel the world meeting women, and pop culture "icons," to discuss fashion, beauty and, of course, take part in some extreme beauty regimes and practices.
Continue reading Jessica Simpson's new reality show finds a home

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Spike Jonze and David Cross take on British comedy

There's no doubt that the names Spike Jonze and David Cross usually belong on the quirkier side of the entertainment world, but I still never would have expected something like this. Apparently, the two have created a comedy pilot for Channel 4. That's right: a British comedy.

The show, called The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret, will be co-written by Cross and Shaun Pye (you may know him as Andy's smarmy nemesis on BBC/HBO's Extras) and star Cross, Will Arnett and Spike Jonze.
Continue reading Spike Jonze and David Cross take on British comedy

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Bryan Fuller quits Heroes

Kristin over at E! Online has confirmed something that Ain't It Cool News reported earlier today: Heroes producer Bryan Fuller has left the show (again)!

A lot of buzz surrounded Fuller's return to the show last season. After Pushing Daisies was canceled, Fuller returned to the NBC show that he produced during the first season. Many fans credit Fuller with getting the show back on track. It did indeed seem that the show was a little bit more focused and engaging when he returned.

And no, this doesn't mean that he's going to be working on a big-screen adaptation of Pushing Daisies. Sorry fans.

Update: Here's why Fuller left.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Nip/Tuck makes its final cut as FX drama wraps shooting

Filed under: Industry, Programming, Nip/Tuck, Cancellations, Reality-Free

Not even the marvels of plastic surgery could save what's become, believe it or not, one of cable TV's oldest dramas - Nip/Tuck.

The wildly successful medical drama starring Julian McMahon and Dylan Walsh as plastic surgeons wrapped production on its series finale (and 100th episode) last week and according to The LA Times, it was a quiet day.

Why the lack of fanfare typically associated with the end of such a popular show? Simple - the finale likely won't air until 2011, around two years from now.

Continue reading Nip/Tuck makes its final cut as FX drama wraps shooting

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Heroes gets its very own Cylon

Filed under: Industry, Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, Casting, Reality-Free
You know what? I'm down with all the cast, er, cross-pollination that's going on in sci-fi TV these days. Especially if it means good actors can keep working after their previous shows were given the axe. Earlier today, we reported that Brian Austin Green, formerly of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, is joining Smallville for a two-episode arc. Now it looks like Battlestar Galactica's Rick Worthy is in talks to join NBC's Heroes.

On BSG, Worthy played Simon, the Cylon famous for conducting icky experiments on Kara Thrace. He'll play telepath Matt Parkman's new partner, an experienced L.A. cop, on Heroes when the show returns this fall. It's still unclear if Worthy's character will develop superpowers on the show, but something tells me he'll be more than just a normal cop before long. This is Heroes were talking about, the show where everyone gets superpowers.

Worthy is a sci-fi vet. He's appeared in everything from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to Dark Angel and Stargate: SG-1. He'll be joining new Heroes season four recruits Robert Knepper and Madelina Zima.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Reaper creators join Dollhouse writing staff

Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Industry, Programming, Reality-Free, Dollhouse
Way back in April we reported that Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, creators of The CW's Reaper, had signed a deal with 20th Century Fox and would most likely be leaving Reaper behind. Now that The CW has officially canceled Reaper to make room for its upcoming slate of bubblegum teen TV, Fazekas and Butters are joining the writing staff of Joss Whedon's Dollhouse. The Reaper duo will begin their Dollhouse stint in season two, which kicks off Friday, Sept. 18 on Fox.

I have mixed feelings about this news. I'm glad that Dollhouse nabbed these two obviously talented and funny writers, but I'm still bummed about Reaper's cancellation. And while this might mean that Dollhouse will deliver more smart, nerdy comedy in season two, that Friday night death slot still has me worried.
Continue reading Reaper creators join Dollhouse writing staff

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

WGA strike gives rise to new web series

The painful writers strike of several months ago could prove a boon to the development of a new web TV channel packed with original content.

The months long Writers Guild of America strike that began November 1 of 2007 touched off a storm from which Hollywood still hasn't recovered. It slowed not only the production of new TV shows but the purchase and development of fresh material. The jury is still out on whether the settlement agreement that ended it all accomplish much for writers -- or merely set-up another strike in 2011.

Reports say, during the work stoppage, a group of top-shelf TV creators decided to step out of the traditional production model and develop material just for the web.
Continue reading WGA strike gives rise to new web series

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

America yawns as T.R. Well, it hadn't, but now it has - EW's Ausiello is reporting that, according to one of his numerous sources, T.R. Knight has been let out of his Grey's Anatomy contract and will not be returning next season.

Can we all breathe one collective sigh of relief now?

I'm not trying to knock Knight at all by saying this, but I'm glad we finally have a resolution here. I'll miss him on the show (George's quirkiness and humor were a huge part of what initially drew me in to Grey's Anatomy), but after the whole mess with Isaiah Washington and three seasons of will he stay or will he go, I'm happy that it's finally over.

Continue reading America yawns as T.R.
