Think hard, it's important. Seriously, that information could determine exactly how you feel about tonight's episode.

On May 16, 2004, The Sopranos aired an episode called "The Test Dream." Tony, reeling from an impending separation and problems in Mafia-town, went a little funny in the head and spent most of the episode engaged in the longest, most weirdly symbolic dream sequence in the history of television (until, that is, the show broke its own record two years later). If you remember, fans of the show were pretty angry; my father, for instance, shot out his screen, Elvis-style.

Anyway, I'm going to guess that you either loved that episode or hated it. How you felt about it probably informs how you felt about tonight's House. In the last few years, we had spin-offs for Grey's Anatomy, Girlfriends, CSI, Law & Order, etc., while others are in the works for Battlestar Galactica and Beverly Hills, 90210.

Therefore, I don't think you'll fall off your chair if I tell you that FOX is toying with the idea of a House spin off. But you may want to make sure you are properly seated before reading this: the spin-off would not focus on doctors but private investigators!
Continue reading A House spin-off about private investigators?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

House: Living the Dream

Filed under: OpEd, House, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
[S04E14] "You don't deserve to be happy." House to Wilson.
"And yet I am. You?" Wilson to House

House treats the symptoms, but he doesn't treat the whole person. He doesn't even claim to. He often makes a clear point that he doesn't care. House likes medicine because he likes to solve puzzles, and what greater consequences can a puzzle have than a human life? But ultimately, even someone dying doesn't matter unless House can't figure out the puzzle.

So, if the above paragraph is true, then why does House go out of his way to kidnap a soap opera star he believes to be dying in order to save his life? Is it really because he can't stand the idea of not watching his soap? I don't think so; he even encourages angsty actor Evan Greer (Sex and the City's Jason Lewis) to quit if he's not happy... well, sort of. But, back to the question: If House doesn't care, then why bother? Because it's a puzzle he can see daily, right in front of him, and he has to solve it. Apparently he has made multiple calls about it, because the actor knows who House is, so House simply takes matters into his own hands because that is what House does. House lives a life without consequences.
Continue reading House: Living the Dream

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

It's finale time again! We've only just started to embrace the return of our shows after a shortened strike season. Now, they are almost over. In the next few weeks all of our network favorites will say good-bye for the summer to be replaced with reality shows, reality game shows, reality soap operas, and Regis on primetime (again).

Needless to say, I'm a bit depressed. As I am sure you are as well. But, we will do our duty and press on. Thusly, we here at the sprawling lakefront offices of TV Squad (you choose the lakefront) have compiled list of when your favorite, and not so favorite, shows will be saying good-bye for their summer vacation. As usual, taking the fickleness of the networks, these times and days can change at a moment's notices. We will try to update you of those changes as quickly as our little fingers can type it out.

So, with a leaden heart, here are your season and series finales.

This week, we get a bit more serious.

There are those in the industry who say that it is easier to go from acting in a drama to acting in a comedy than it is the other way around. Yet, as you will see from the list we've compiled after the jump, there are plenty of comedic actors who have jumped from the world of comedy films, stand-up comedy, and television sitcoms into the more serious world of drama. In many cases they have had even greater success than they did on the other side of the tracks. There have even been instances where they stayed in the drama genre and never went back to being funny.

I could then go on to question whether the color blue was the same for me as it is for everyone else. Deeeeeeeeep.

Well, I don't have a freshmen dorm at my disposal, but I do have TV Squad. Sure, there's a few I can't get them interested in (hard as I try), like Lost, Heroes, and Grey's Anatomy (probably just as well, with all the bed-hopping). Still, there are lots of shows I've had to recap or review over the years that they've gotten hooked on. Here are a few of our favorites.

1. House, M.D. There's something refreshing about an infectious disease specialist who walks with a limp, pops Vicodin like dinner mints, and has the bedside manner of a schoolyard bully. The kids and I can't wait to gather around the TV and watch the tortured doc hurl insults at colleagues and break into patients' homes looking for mysterious mold or a DNA sample. We like to place bets on how long it'll take somebody to start seizing and spewing blood. Last season broke the record when a drug-addicted rock star started puking blood during the first five seconds of the show. Sure, this show is rated PG-14, but it's still a family favorite around here. My kids especially love the scenes where the camera goes inside the cells and arteries of a patient (not). House, M.D. moves to Mondays at 9/8c, and returns with new episodes on April 28.
Continue reading Five shows I love to watch with my kids

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

USA Network upfront: old characters, and a few new ones - AUDIO

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Comedy Shows, Industry, House, Law and Order, Cable/Satellite, Interviews, Psych, Upfronts
Last night, USA Network invited some of their favorite advertisers -- and a few reporters -- to their upfront presentation, held at The Modern, a sleek restaurant and lounge located at New York's Museum of Modern Art. It was an opportunity for USA and NBC Universal executives to crow about the network's continued success as well as let advertisers know what's coming up in 2008 and how they can combine their advertising message with the unique "characters" that USA offers.

All that's well and good -- be ready for more product placement and ad pods that other networks have recently adopted -- but the best part about an upfront presentation are the stars that the network drags out to schmooze and booze with those advertisers. And USA brought the big guns, including Tony Shalhoub from Monk, Debra Messing from The Starter Wife, Jeffrey Donovan and Bruce Campbell from Burn Notice, Dulé Hill, James Roday, and Corbin Bernsen from Psych, Kathryn Erbe and Chris Noth from Law & Order: Criminal Intent, the WWE's Triple H and Shawn Michaels, and Mary McCormack from the network's new show In Plain Sight. I got to speak to a few of them; audio of those interviews is after the jump.

Gallery: USA Network Upfront 2008
<a this spring" />Hear that sound -- a nearly inaudible rumbling coming over the horizon? Everyday it is getting louder and louder. Soon, the stampede that is the return of scripted series back from the depths of the WGA strike will overrun our televisions and computer screens, bringing overwhelming joy to our lives.

Okay, that statement may be a little flowery, but the sentiment is still there. After a very long dry period a good many of our favorite comedies and dramas are returning to the television landscape. We've had a taste of it these last few weeks with the return of shows like The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Dirt, The Riches and Smallville. That was just a preview of what is to come. Over the next few weeks we will see the return of The Office, Scrubs, Ugly Betty, all of the CSIs, Battlestar Galactica, and Lost, among others.

The real world based on the fiction they create. So, Law and Order -- in all its incarnations -- is set in New York City, but it's not the real five boroughs. The newspapers they read are not The New York Times, the Post or the Daily News. For contemporary TV fiction, reality is on the margins of the storytelling because you can't really set those characters in a real world. However, when the two worlds intersect, the results can be magic. Here's 8 big-time, primetime examples:

1) Cowboy Up Time
Remember the episode of Lost when Ben wanted to convince Jack that he was in communication with the world outside the island? To prove that he was telling the truth, he showed Jack a video of the Boston Red Sox winning the world series in 2004. You can't get more real than that, right? And yet it was used in one of the most out of this world shows on the air. In fact, using Lost's own terminology, the Red Sox video is a constant truth in a universe that's a complete fiction.

Gallery: Fact in Fiction
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/fact-in-fiction/716538/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/fact-in-fiction/716539/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/fact-in-fiction/716541/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/fact-in-fiction/716543/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/fact-in-fiction/716545/">

Continue reading Eight real world moments in reel TV

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

House producer heading to Court K

Filed under: House, Pickups and Renewals
Paul Attanasio, House executive producer, has conjured up a legal drama for Fox. The network greenlighted a one-hour pilot, Court K, which is set in Milwaukee and involves a judge, a prosecutor and a public defender. Just because it's set in Milwaukee, don't expect to see Laverne and Shirley.

Like House is not your typical medical drama, Court K will not be a typical lawyer show, not that Boston Legal is typical, but you know what I mean. Court K is reportedly a lot grittier, with sardonic, dark comic elements. We'll have to see if any of the principals are hooked on Vicodan. I wonder if it'll remind me of the movie ...And Justice For All, which was also a dark comic look at a Baltimore courthouse. But then, wasn't that Night Court, too?
Continue reading House producer heading to Court K

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

New showrunner for Dirty Sexy Money

Filed under: House, Lost, Pickups and Renewals, Dexter, Brothers and Sisters, Dirty Sexy Money, WGA Strike
There's a new guy running the show for ABC's drama Dirty Sexy Money and his name is Daniel Cerone. Cerone replaces Josh Reims. As executive producer, Cerone will be working with creator Craig Wright (Lost), as well as Greg Berlanti (Brothers & Sisters), Matthew Gross and Bryan Singer (House) -- so the show's got lots of first-class pedigree.
So Wilson is going out with Cutthroat Bitch (aka: Amber), huh? And, for awhile all is well. That's a pretty good record for Wilson, and devious as hell since he was able to keep it from House for so long. Of course, there is now a challenge for Greg to figure out why Amber seems such a catch for his best friend.

Manipulation? Well, that's a possible answer since Wilson is directly connected to House and can be the avenue to get her a fellowship. Revenge? Certainly, especially the way the good doctor treated Amber during the competition. Actual love and affection for Wilson? Nah, couldn't be! I mean, that would just be ludicrous coming from someone who was only concerned about herself during the game. Come on, doesn't anyone remember when she got all of those candidates to stop washing House's car and walk away from the competition? Plus, according to House, people don't change.

Continue reading House: Don't Ever Change - VIDEO

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

House: Frozen

Filed under: OpEd, House, Episode Reviews
(S04E11) "Never before has a profession been so decried by someone who needed it so badly," Wilson [about psychiatry] to House.

One of my favorite parts of this episode was the quote I have chosen to put at the beginning of the entry. Wilson accuses House of not liking Cate, the patient, because she is a psychiatrist. House counters that there are many reasons he does not like the patient, and Wilson comes back with that retort. The reason I like it so much isn't because I think it's meant to be about House. I like it so much because I think it's a sneaky little slam on Tom Cruise. Or at least, if that is too much of a stretch, then I like it because it certainly can be applied to Tom Cruise and his very public outcries against psychiatry.

Gallery: House: Frozen
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/house-frozen/621673/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/house-frozen/621672/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/house-frozen/621671/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/house-frozen/621670/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/house-frozen/621669/">

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Spoilers Anonymous

Filed under: House, Spoilers Anonymous, Heroes, Friday Night Lights, Brothers and Sisters

This is Spoilers Anonymous, a weekly column here at TV Squad where we'll supply you with the dirt on some of the more popular shows on the air.
(S04E10) "Who's that from?" -- Kutner

"Santa, of course. Don't you know that I worship him? Oh wait, that's Satan. Sorry, I get them confused." -- House

Well, maybe it was the fact that I haven't seen an episode of House in nearly two months, but dear ol' Greggie seemed more cynical than his normal cynical self. Most likely it was due to the holidays. You know, the holidays that came and went over a month ago. I know that FOX is trying to save as many episodes of its hit shows as possible, but it would have been nice if they aired the House Christmas episode around, you know, Christmas.

What if they gave out Golden Globes and no one was there to walk down the red carpet? Perhaps I'm just a cynical so-and-so, but I think the ceremony is as much a part of it all as are the actual trophies, perhaps even more important to many in the industry. It's their chance to shine, to glow, to wear nifty trend-setting gowns. Hey, it's Hollywood. It's the chance for those behind the scenes to take the stage if but only for a minute or two.

Due to the WGA strike, there will be no ceremony this year as the actors show their solidarity with the writers. Ah, but it's the industry -- the show must go on even if the show can't go on. The Golden Globe winners will be announced in a news conference sort of setting. Hmm. I think I'll just read about it all online. Let's forget the drama about no awards show and get into the nominees for Best Television Series, Drama!

Gallery: 2008 Golden Globes - Best Television Drama
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/2008-golden-globes-best-television-drama/570191/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/2008-golden-globes-best-television-drama/570180/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/2008-golden-globes-best-television-drama/570230/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/2008-golden-globes-best-television-drama/570236/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/2008-golden-globes-best-television-drama/570240/">

Continue reading The Golden Globes: Best Television Series - Drama

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Golden Globes: Best Actor - Drama

Filed under: OpEd, House, Big Love, Dexter, Awards
<img width="200" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="301" border="0" align="right" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.tvsquad.com/media/2008/01/gg-mch200-peter-iovino-showtime.jpg" alt="Michael C. I am glad that I don't have to vote officially for the Golden Globes, because I really think this is a very hard group to choose from. I have to say that my top three contenders are Michael C. Hall, Bill Haxton, and Hugh Laurie-- and not just because of their performances last year, but also because of their bodies of work as a whole. I don't know whether that is entirely fair or not, but I don't live in a vacuum. However, that is not to take away from the other two nominees, and the group as a whole are:

Gallery: 2008 Golden Globes Nominees: Best Actor in a Drama
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/2008-golden-globes-nominees-best-actor-in-a-drama/572155/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/2008-golden-globes-nominees-best-actor-in-a-drama/572152/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/2008-golden-globes-nominees-best-actor-in-a-drama/572151/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/2008-golden-globes-nominees-best-actor-in-a-drama/572143/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/2008-golden-globes-nominees-best-actor-in-a-drama/572128/">

Continue reading The Golden Globes: Best Actor - Drama

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Michael C. Well, as nostalgic as you can get for shows that premiered only three and four years ago. Wouldn't you like to relive the first time you saw Gregory House berate a staffer over at Princeton-Plainsboro Hospital? Or, watch one of Temperance Brennan's first
"official" pairings with Seeley Booth? And, rather than watching it on DVD, uninterrupted, wouldn't you like to review these moments on network television, complete with commercials and constant reminders that American Idol is premiering very, very soon?

Well, FOX is giving you that chance on January 8th as it airs "encores" (aka: repeats) of the House and Bones pilot episodes. This will give new and old viewers a chance to see how their beloved characters looked and acted in the very beginning, and how they grew (or not) as their respective series progressed. It's also a chance to watch these two shows in proper Tuesday night order before the schedule is ripped asunder by the monster known as American Idol.

Continue reading See how it all started for Bones and House

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
