AngelI would never have seen a single episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel if I hadn't recently lived with some friends who were huge fans of both series. I could never get into Buffy, but I did like Angel, and was more than a little perturbed to find out the series ended abruptly with no real resolution at all.

buffy season 8(S08I01) Fans of Buffy have waited a long time for something like this. It's not a new television season and it's not a movie, but when you think about it this could be the best way for it to return. You don't have ugly casting problems and the special effects budget isn't a concern at all. In fact, you can just kill off a major character in spectacular fashion and not worry that you just ruined an actor's livelihood.

If you haven't gone out and picked up this first issue of what's been blessed bu Joss Whedon as Buffy the Vampire Slayer season eight, you might not want to read on, as there will be spoilers. Or if you're just cheap or too lazy to pick it up, you can come too.

buffy season 8Since Angel left the air almost three years ago, fans of the Buffyverse shows have wondered how (not if) either series would continue. We've been teased with the possibility of moves since even before Buffy ended its run, and still no one seems to have given us a straight answer.

Finally we Whedon fans have had something to look forward to in the form of a comic book. Sure there have been plenty of books done in the Buffyverse before, but this time it's different. 'Long Way from Home' is meant to serve as the start of Joss' s vision of what a season eight of Buffy would have been, had the show continued. So for purists this is most probably considered canon.

I was lucky enough to get an early draft of the first issue from the series, so read on for a few not-so spoilery tidbits.

As Kevin pointed out, it's all recycled content, but it's good recycled content (at least to a horror fan like myself), so I'm not complaining. Aside from the TV series, the new channel will also feature movies like The Shining, Psycho, Cat's Eye, The Andromeda Strain, and some of those great Abbot and Costello Meet [Blank] flicks.

One final thought: No Tales From the Darkside? What's up with that nonsense?

Garth Marenghi's DarkplaceLast month, I started taking a course in basic video techniques. The first day of class, the professor gave us a large packet on all the number one no-no's of amateur filmmaking. The next evening, I happened upon a few episodes of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and suddenly, I saw everything in that twenty-four page packet spring to life before my very eyes. The hilariously cheesy effects, poor acting, and continuity so awful that it would have made even Ed Wood weep... Somehow, within six short episodes, this show had done every television "don't".

Adrian PaulKevin mentioned Sci Fi's new plan for Saturday the other day. It's a series of movies that they are calling "Sci Fi Saturday: The Most Dangerous Night of Television." It's a tricky bit of business, the Sci Fi originals. I'm a fan of the cheesy movies like Mansquito, or Alien Apocalypse, but I know from the comments here that many of Sci Fi's viewers are not impressed by their movie slate. Some details about the movies are coming out now. So either get ready to plan your viewing, or use this to fuel your rage about how they are ruining the network.

First up is The Lost Colony. Adrian Paul (Highlander) stars in a story about the mystery of the lost colony of Roanoke. King Arthur & The Order of the Dragon follows a quest for the Holy Grail. Both of those will premiere in 2007. In addition, three others have been given the go ahead for production. Riddle of the Sphinx finds an astronomer and a cryptographer who mistakenly awaken a deadly Sphinx. Sherlock Holmes & the Banshee is a new adventure for the classic detective. Finally, Odysseus & the Isle of Mists chronicles the battle between Odysseus & Persephone as his men face her vampire beasts. I guess ampersands are big this year. Depending on your perspective, and taste, it should either be a fun year on Sci Fi, or totally suck.

sci fi logoThe Sci Fi chanel has their hands full this year, with a ton of original programming coming down the pipeline, which can probably be attributed to what I'm calling the Battlestar Galactica effect. That's a whole different channel from what debuted in 1992 as a place for Paramount and Universal to recycle old material.

Helping to buoy up the 400 hours will be Sci Fi Saturday: The Most Dangerous Night on Television, which debuts an original movie every Saturday. They showed us a couple of teasers, which actually pretty slick.

crypt keeperWe're live at the Television Critic's Association 2007, sitting in on the NBC/Universal morning presentation. One little tidbit they've just dropped is that they will be launching a new channel on DIRECTV called Chiller. It will focus on horror and sci-fi, and feature series like Tales from the Crypt and Alfred Hitchcock Presents, as well as movies like The Shining, Blade Runner, and Psycho.

While the channel is tailor-made for horror fans, they are just using this new channel to recycle old content, and it would be nice to see an original show or two. I can already smell a "Who Wants to be a Serial Killer?" reality show to fit with the Fangoria crowd.

stephen kingRumors about Steven Spielberg helming an adaptation of The Talisman, the novel by Stephen King and Peter Straub, have been circulating for almost as long as the book itself has been in print, almost three decades. Last year reports began to pop up again that a film adaptation was in the works, but still nothing. Now, however, it's official: Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy will be executive producing the six-hour adaptation for DreamWorks Television, set to air on TNT in the summer of 2008. Ehren Krueger (Arlington Road, The Ring, The Brothers Grimm) is penning the script.

The novel focuses on Jack Sawyer, a young boy who sets out on a quest to find the titular talisman, a magic artifact that may save his mother, who is dying of cancer. Jack flips back and forth between parallel worlds, his own reality and another called "the Territories." This novel, along with its sequel, 2001's Black House, also ties into King's seven-part Dark Tower series, as does a large portion of his other works.

Linda Blair(S02E07) I have to say, I have been looking forward to this episode all week. I'm the kind of TV nut that loves seeing the actors from shows, or movies, that I like show up in other things. So, when I saw Jason Gedrick (Murder One) and Linda Blair (The Exorcist) in the preview, I couldn't wait. And if that wasn't enough, did everyone recognize Karen? That was Keegan Connor Tracy. You might remember her as Diane on Jake 2.0, but I hope you remember her from one of my most favorite shows, Beggars and Choosers, where she played Audrey Malone. Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles(S02E06) Well, that didn't take long. Last week I mentioned that I would like to see Jo out of the ROADHOUSE and on a hunt soon. And this week, that is just what we got. Sam and Dean walked in on a fight between Jo and Ellen only to find that Jo going on a hunt is the reason behind it. The boys took Ellen's side, leaving Jo behind. When Jo showed up to investigate the case anyway, things got interesting.

There was a nice scene with Jo and Dean where he explained why she shouldn't be hunting. It isn't just because they don't want to cross her mother. Dean thinks that she's better than this. That she should be taking advantage of her options and going to school. More than anything, I think Dean just wants to protect her because he hates the thought of being responsible for anything happening to her. That's all beside the point anyway, was Jo is having none of it.

Night of the Living DeadWe have a channel for golfers, one for soap fans, and even one that is all reality tv all the time, so why not an outlet for horror fans? Seeing the recent growth in the horror market, Comcast has decided to do just that. But this isn't just some run of the mill obscure cable channel. FEARnet is a "multiplatform network". Customers will be able to view content from three different platforms. The video on demand component will feature 200 movies over the course of the first year, at around 70 hours a month. Those movies will be free to Comcast digital subscribers. And I thought the Charlie's Angels section on TubeTime was good.

The online companion, FEARnet.com, will have 9 movies and 200 shorts that stream for free. In addition, there will be 50 downloadable movies available for rent or purchase. The site will also have news, reviews, and some community features. One of those that sounds interesting is the interactive database. Users, or victims as fearnet calls them, will also have the ability to chat with other members while they watch the movies. Sure, you could do it with IM, but it's good that they are trying something new. And finally, mobile.FEARnet.com will have news, reviews, and polls all designed with the tiny screens in mind. There are also plans to add ringtones and other goodies in the future. It's all very niche market, but since I find myself in that particular niche, I'm all for the idea. The various sites and services will all go live on Halloween.

Julia Louis-DreyfusThat's Julia Louis-Dreyfus on the right, in her groundbreaking performance as a woman turned into a nymph in the classic 1986 horror flick Troll. It was her first big screen appearance after her short stint on Saturday Night Live. Luckily, she went on to a role in Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters the very same year, then on some show about nothing. And now, of course, she's on the hit CBS comedy The New Adventures of Old Christine.

If you've never seen Troll, it's, um, interesting to say the least. Maybe good for a goofy Halloween DVD to rent. It stars Michael Moriarty, Sonny Bono, Shelley Hack, June Lockhart and Noah Hathaway as the hero of the flick, Harry Potter.

Yup, Harry Potter.

Shaun of the DeadI don't know how long these promos have been running on Comedy Central, but during South Park, I just saw a bug promoting the television premiere of Shaun of the Dead (Saturday at 9 PM EST!). I was so giddy, I choked on air. Although I've seen it a million an one times, I am very excited that it's coming to American cable. Shaun is one of those films that I constantly try to get people to see, so it's nice that some fresh meat will watch it without me having to strap them to a chair and do various Clockwork Orange-y things to them.

Also, I am quite interested in seeing how much they edit from the film. After all, it is a rather gory movie... and the language is quite coarse (heh, Ed's not going to have any lines in the television version, is he?).

Bruce Campbell, Renee O'Connor - Alien ApocalypseIf you are a fan of the SciFi channel, the phrase, "SciFi Original Movie" probably gives you a bit of a cringe. Premiering a new movie on Saturday night has become a fairly regular thing for the network, but the quality of those movies is all over the map. More often than not they are cheesy, campy if you prefer, B-Movie horror pictures. But the one saving grace they have is great casting. Case in point: Alien Apocalypse. How can you pass up anything starring Bruce Campbell and Renee O'Connor? It's enough to get me to watch. The same reasoning led me to watch Mansquito (Corin Nemec), Out For Blood (Vanessa Angel, Jody Lyn O'Keefe, and Lance Henriksen), and the recent Kraken:Tentacles of the Deep (Victoria Pratt), among many others.

The good news, if you like these kind of movies, is that SciFi has just signed a deal with RHI Entertainment for ten more movies. If you are wondering how they are going to compare to past SciFi originals, take a look at these titles. Grizzly Rage, Maneater, Eye Of The Beast, Blood Monkey, and In The Spider's Web. Blood Monkey! Awesome! The tradition continues. And, yes, this Saturday I'll be watching Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes. It stars Lance Henriksen and Doug Bradley. Ya gotta like that.

patton oswaltI know, I know, it's already near the end of October, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't check out this amazing list of horror stories suggested by comedian, actor and nerd Patton Oswalt. The man clearly loves to read and just looking over his MySpace posts I had to add about twenty new names to the list inside my brain of writers I need to check out. While I love Oswalt's comedy, it's actually kind of refreshing how seriously he seems to be taking this task, giving his own critique of each of the stories not as a wise ass comedian, but as a book lover trying to convince someone these tales are worth checking out. I hate to admit it, but the only two stories he's mentioned so far that I've actually read are "The Jaunt" by Stephen King and "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs. I really need to get a hold of some of those books.

HalloweenBoo! Did I scare you? Well, if I didn't that's okay. I'm not much into scaring people since I gave Uncle Barry that heart attack at last year's Halloween party by putting a bloody finger into his apple-tini. Eh, Barry deserved it; he was always a putz. Sorry, wandered off for a bit there. What was I talking about? Oh, yes, scaring people. There's really no need for me to scare anyone this upcoming Halloween since my good old friend television can do it much better. Last year, when I caught word that Showtime was creating a sort of meeting of the minds of horror with their new series, Masters of Horror, I was pumped. I've been a sucker for horror books, movies and TV, especially including the B-movie horror that you'd often see Joe Bob Briggs covering in some book or TV show. Unfortunately, though, I was a bit let down.

Last season's Masters of Horror had one hell of a line-up of directors, with the likes of Mick Garris, John Carpenter and Takashi Miike. The problem for me was that, for the most part, this wasn't even close to the best stuff these guys could dish out. Somebody (the network?) wimped out in many cases, taking the camera away too soon from gory scenes as if to spare the viewer a tummy-ache. I felt cheated.

If you felt the same way I did about last season, next season's going to be a ... pleasant change for you.

Tamara Feldman - Supernatural(S02E04) Zombies! I didn't think they were going in that direction based on the opening. Given the events that led up to Angela's death I thought we were looking at something more along the lines of the woman in white from "Pilot". She certainly had the wardrobe for it. I suppose since we've been down that road though, this was a better way to go. And in typical Supernatural fashion, Angela isn't your father's zombie.

She's fast. And as we learned, a bullet to the brain doesn't have much effect. I like that they have made their own rules for the dispatching of the various baddies in the world of the show. And nailing a zombie into its grave bed is a great way to kill them. What threw me off about Angela was the actress playing her. The Tivo description of the episode listed Summer Glau (Angel, Firefly) in the role, and her IMDB profile confirmed. But that wasn't Summer, it was Tamara Feldman. While it would have been fun to see Summer Glau, Tamara did a nice job as Angela, and gave me one more reason to track down a copy of Hatchet.
