A time to put your feet up, grab a lemonade, open a book, and let the cool, summer breezes gently rock your hammock as a lazy July day passes. Of course, that's if you aren't attending the San Diego Comic-Con. Then, it's out of your bed, quick shower (if any), breakfast-on-the-go, and right back into the queues to see your particular favorites talking about their television shows.

Like Friday, Saturday at Comic-Con will be packed with television goodness. This is the day that many of the big guns come to play. Shows like The Office, Lost, Battlestar Galactica will be making appearances. They will be joined by newcomers Chuck, Dollhouse, and Pushing Daisies. There will even be an appearance by the recently single Sarah Silverman. There's also a good bit of television animation being featured, particularly by Nicktoons and B.E.T. Animation.

In order to make sure you get the most out of the money you paid to get into the convention, we here at TV Squad are providing you with a complete list of television-related panels for that day. If you are interested in seeing what else is going on July 25th you can review the official full schedule at the Comic-Con website. Remember, times and appearances are subject to change and seating in all event rooms is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Continue reading Comic-Con Countdown: Saturday, July 26th

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Heroes webisodes launched yesterday

Filed under: OpEd, Heroes, Reality-Free, Webisodes
NBC launched a webisode series called Going Postal to whet your appetite for the fall season of Heroes. Each week we'll get introduced to a new villain, their ability and their motives.

The first installment called "A Nifty Trick" features Echo DeMille played by Kiko Ellsworth (General Hospital, Dexter). Echo is a mailman with a secret ability that involves really loud screaming. An official-looking agent and a pale thug are after him.

Over the next few weeks we'll find out more about Gina (Rebeka Montoya), Constrictor (Mark Steger), Agent Howard (Brian Prescott), and Agent #1 (James Ryen). Gina is Echo's love interest (according to the site she doesn't have a special ability). And we meet Constrictor in this first video. You can probably tell what Constrictor's ability is just from the name.

Continue reading Heroes webisodes launched yesterday

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Heroes: Going Postal trailer - VIDEO

By the time Heroes kicks off season three, babies will have been born that were conceived after the season two finale but arrived in time for the season three premiere. That's a long wait by anyone's standards. Anyone except David Chase anyway. It's not as bad as all that though. NBC has seen fit to commission the web series, Heroes: Going Postal to make that wait just a little easier to take.

The series kicks off next Monday on NBC.com, and they've started the hype machine up this week with a trailer. The new character you see in the picture is Echo DeMille. He's a mild mannered mailman, with a secret. But as the trailer tells us, sooner or later, secrets will kill. The three part series is made by the same people behind the show and new episodes will appear on the following Mondays. It's unclear what role, if any, the regular heroes will play in the web series, but there is a familiar face that pops up in the trailer. See for yourself, after the jump.

Continue reading Heroes: Going Postal trailer - VIDEO

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Lost wins four Saturn awards

Filed under: Lost, Family Guy, Celebrities, Heroes, Dexter, Awards, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Reality-Free
The Saturn awards ceremony was held last night, and Lost dominated the television categories with four wins. The drama won the award for Best Network Series and nearly swept the acting categories. Evangeline Lilly lost the Best Actress award to Ghost Whisperer's Jennifer Love Hewitt, last year's winner. Most of the first-time nominees, such as Pushing Daisies and Journeyman, were shut out. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was the only exception; Summer Glau tied for Best Supporting Actress.

Comedian Jeffrey Ross hosted the event. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a successful awards season for Lost. A complete list of winners in the television categories follows after the jump.
Continue reading Lost wins four Saturn awards

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Check out the new painting from Heroes

Did you know that Heroes is filming right now? Yup, they're filming episodes for the third season (after a strike-shortened second season) this weekend in downtown Los Angeles.

BlogDowntown.com has a picture of a mural on a wall near an alley called Frank Court, which is between Spring and Broadway streets. No word on how the painting figures into the plot, but it does seem to show the Earth exploding, which is one step up from the painting that showed New York City exploding in the first season. BlogDowntown also says that the scenes being shot will also involve a car chase and gunfire.

I want to know what they're going to do with this painting once filming is done. Wash it off? Reproduce it someplace else? Just take photos of it? Tear down the wall and auction it for charity?

No word on which cast members will be involved in the filming, if any.

He is playing a reporter that is pursuing Ali Larter's 'Nikki' character (who, given this information, likely survived the explosion that ended last season).

"I just filmed it last week," Katt says. "I play a really, really wonderful, seedy, smarmy-mouthed reporter that goes after Ali Larter. It was a lot of fun."

When comparing Heroes to the superhero show he once starred in, Katt says "It's more Hitchcockian. It's a more dark and seedy look at the world of superheroes. It's offering to television viewers what some of the better comic books do...Tim Kring is just an extraordinary writer. And I think there's no end to his creativity. He's kind of mad, in an insane way. And that always makes it interesting. There are a lot of twists yet to come."

My only question is: will he tell the other heroes where to find the instruction book?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Veronica Mars meets Weevil -- on Heroes?

We Veronica Mars fans take whatever bones the TV world will throw at us. We mourn the loss of the well-written female super-sleuth series, and we've been kicked while we are down with the cancellation of Moonlight, where we at least got to see Jason Dohring every week. Could there be a little love coming for the VM fans?

If you watch Heroes, you could be in for a real treat this fall, when Francis Capra, of Weevil fame, joins the cast alongside former Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell.

We don't know much about Capra's role except that his name is Jesse and he will be evil. Weevil playing evil -- a rhyme I just had to make and a role I'm looking forward to seeing. Even though I don't watch Heroes, I'll tune in to see what Capra's got for us.

So, VM fans, enjoy the reunion of Veronica and Weevil this fall, and try not to let that bothersome Heroes story line get in the way of the VM nostalgia.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Brought to You by TV Squad Award: Winner - VIDEO

Filed under: Smallville, Heroes, Awards, Moonlight, TV Squad Awards

Product placement is everywhere, inescapable. According to Dr. Jean Kilbourne, author of Can't Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel, Americans are exposed to approximately 3000 advertisements every single day. Kilbourne has a compelling video called Killing Us Softly that reveals how insidious advertisements are. Ads tell us that women should be thinner, quieter, nicer, want to have cleaner houses. They tell us that men are boarish, lust after women while drinking cheap beers, and order endless rounds of pizza without ever developing a gut. Advertisements not only tell us what we should buy: They tell us how we should think and feel about things and who we should be.

Unfortunately, the price of our entertainment is advertisements. Even when you go to the movies these days, before you have seen any previews, you have seen six commercials for new phones from Verizon and Sprint; and you have paid handsomely for the privilege. This TV Squad Award is amusing, but it is also a testament to how ubiquitous ads are: They have now found their way into the very scripts of some of our very best shows. The only advantage shows like Lost and Battlestar Galactica have is that they mostly take place anachronistically, so advertising would stand out too ridiculously. However, sadly, other outstanding shows have succumbed. And one of the finest is TV Squad's choice to win this award.
Continue reading The Brought to You by TV Squad Award: Winner - VIDEO

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Most Real Unreal Award: Winner - VIDEO

Filed under: Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural, Heroes, Awards, TV Squad Awards

This was a very close race, both in the Readers' Choice poll and among the TV Squad team. In fact, the RC poll has been ping-ponging back and forth for the past few days, and I had to wait until the last moment to declare that winner by a slim margin of only two points! But before we get to who you, the readers chose, let's get on with the TV Squad choice: Heroes.

Heroes is one of those shows that evolved over time with respect to the special effects presented to us. The pilot episode, for example, had much to be desired. When I first commented about the pilot back two years ago, I wasn't at all impressed with what we saw. I thought the effects of showing Nathan fly looked amateurish and with crappily edited wire tricks.

Move ahead through last season of Heroes, and it's been a whole different story. We've got the impressive effects of Hiro's time time-stopping ability, Claire's regenerating wounds, the numerous powers of Peter and even the other times we've seen Nathan fly.

Among the TV Squad team, it was a race between Heroes and Battlestar Galactica. When it came down to voting, these were the only two in contention to win. The readers has roughly the same idea, putting Heroes and BSG neck-in-neck throughout the voting process. By only two points, Battlestar Galactica takes the Readers' Choice award this year. Supernatural had a very tough showing, coming in a rather close third.

This award isn't just about great special effects. There are lots of different ways a show or movie can display effects that dazzle and wow us. This is about a show that uses special effects in ways that, as closely as possible, make us believe what we're seeing could be "real" -- if what we're watching on TV were ever a reality, this is what it would look and sound like, what it would be like. For example, this is what it would look like if someone were to stop time. To pass through walls. To fly.

Congratulations to you, Heroes, for taking the first annual Most Real Unreal award. And a congrats to Battlestar Galactica for taking the Readers' Choice award this time around. As for the other shows that didn't win this time around: make us believe in your reality next year.

Continue reading The Most Real Unreal Award: Winner - VIDEO

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Brought to You by TV Squad Award nominees

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Smallville, Heroes, Awards, Moonlight, TV Squad Awards
I was honestly surprised by the number of responses we got to the call for nominees for The Brought to You by TV Squad Awards. It turns out that a LOT of people are as irritated by blatant product placement as I am. Hurray! Is this the wave of the future? And if it is, can we get advertisers to eliminate commercials? Because if I have to endure ads tucked within my shows, then I don't want even to have to speed past them with my TiVo. Let's have one or the other, shall we? Because I'd hate to start boycotting Krispy Kreme and Stride gum just because I've been bombarded.

As it turns out, there were four stand-out nominees; I will tell you who they are after the jump, and then you will have a chance to vote for the Reader's Choice winner (which, in this case, is actually an obnoxious loser). But I did want to mention two runners up: 30 Rock gets an honorable mention for its mention of Verizon, but it doesn't quite make the cut because of the humorous way it handles the mention, and the show's ability to poke fun at itself. The other honorable mention goes to Ugly Betty for its hour-long ad for Wicked, but it still didn't quite make the cut.

So, the nominees for the most obnoxious abuse of product placement within their episodes are ...
Continue reading The Brought to You by TV Squad Award nominees

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Most Real Unreal Award nominees - VIDEOS

Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Battlestar Galactica, Video, Stargate, Supernatural, Heroes, Awards, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Reality-Free, TV Squad Awards
At first I was surprised at the low turnout for the call for considerations last week, but it's understandable. Then we started thinking about it, and we couldn't come up with too many names off the tops of our heads. It seemed like our readers were equally flummoxed, as our call for considerations got less nominees than many of the other categories. I guess casting directors and producers are doing a much better job these days, since it seems like Elizabeth Röhm-esque casting disasters are happening less often.

But some names did emerge, which I'll list after the jump. The Squadders will choose the winner, and you'll get a chance to select the Readers' Choice for this award in the poll at the end of the list. So, here are the four people whose casting made us wonder just what the heck people in Hollywood are thinking:
Continue reading The What the *#@#%! I mean, Heroes is about superheroes. So, during the first season of the show, a different artist penned a short webcomic (about five pages long) that focused on the background of one of the characters, or introduced a new character not seen on the television show. Eventually, all 34 chapters of this webcomic were collected and sold as a graphic novel. Also, the set will contain special foil cars, flip motion cards that show before and after character morphs, swatches of costume material, and original sketches from Heroes illustrators like Tim Sale.

The first card set will include the following characters: H.R.G., Micah Sanders, Matt Parkman, Ando Masahashi, Hiro Nakamura, Claire Bennet, Nathan Petrelli, Mohinder Suresh, Sylar, and Peter Petrelli.
Continue reading The new Heroes trading cards

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Did you know that Heroes is a top five show?

Filed under: Industry, Programming, House, Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, Ratings, Reality-Free

That was one of the many insights that NBC head Jeff Zucker had on Charlie Rose last night.

Charlie wanted to know what the top five shows in the ratings were, and while Zucker mentioned shows like Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and House, he also included Heroes in that bunch. He named Heroes and four other shows and said "those are the top five." Now, I love Heroes as much as the next person, but I don't really remember it being in the top five that much (if at all). Top ten or twenty? Sometimes I guess, but not top five.

Continue reading Did you know that Heroes is a top five show?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

NBC announces webisodes of Office and Heroes

Filed under: Video, Web, The Office, Heroes, Reality-Free

NBC announced today that webisodes for The Office and Heroes would officially premiere on NBC.com starting in July. Seems like all that chit-chat that led to the WGA Strike cease-fire is finally showing some results.

The Office webisodes will premiere first in early July and will focus on Kevin's gambling issues and how he plans to pay for his debts. We got a taste of his competitive side in this past week's episode when he started betting on holes at the golf course. The summer series will also feature Stanley, Oscar, and Darryl. This is the second series of webisodes for The Office, which premiered The Accountants back in the summer of 2006.

Continue reading NBC announces webisodes of Office and Heroes

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Yet another actor joins Heroes

Filed under: Celebrities, Heroes, Casting, Reality-Free
Yes. It's starting to look like Summer 2007 when we feed you announcements about additions to the Heroes cast at least twice a week. Earlier this week, I told you that Friday Night Lights' Brea Grant was joining the superheroes series as a character with the power of superspeed. Today, I'm letting you know that 57-year-old actor Bruce Boxleitner (he'll turn 58 on May 12), was added to the cast of Heroes.
Continue reading Yet another actor joins Heroes

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Brea Grant speeds her way to Heroes

Filed under: Celebrities, Heroes, Friday Night Lights, Casting, Reality-Free
Actress Brea Grant just landed a pretty cool role on the hit NBC series Heroes. According to TV Guide's Michael Ausiello, the young actress was cast as Joy, a woman in her early twenties with the power of superspeed.

This recurring character is said to be introduced in a scene set at a museum. Hiro meets the woman at the museum and asks her if she has powers and is using them to steal art. As expected, Joy will lie to our beloved hero Hiro and leave the scene with a few paintings. Is she part of the villains or is she one of the good guys and somehow lost her way? Only time will tell!
Continue reading Brea Grant speeds her way to Heroes

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Gossip Girl cast among People's most beautiful

Filed under: Desperate Housewives, Celebrities, Heroes, Dancing With The Stars, Friday Night Lights, Samantha Who?, Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl is getting a lot of exposure these days. A week after the OMFG scandal, the cast of Gossip Girl has made People magazine's list of the most beautiful people of 2008. No argument here. Eye candy is one of the main reasons why I love the show. My only complaint is that Matthew Settle and Kelly Rutherford were left out. Rufus Humphrey and Lily van der Woodsen are currently two of the hottest parents on TV.

Other familiar TV faces made the list, including: Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria Parker and Marcia Cross, Sarah Silverman, Ugly Betty executive producer Salma Hayek, Kristen Bell, Christina Applegate, Dancing With The Stars' Carrie Ann Inaba and Jason Taylor, Vanessa Hudgens, Mad Men's Christina Hendricks, and Minka Kelly from Friday Night Lights.

Continue reading Gossip Girl cast among People's most beautiful

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Would you pay a premium to watch shows early?

Filed under: Programming, The Office, Heroes, Reality-Free

There's an interesting little blurb over at Digital Spy about NBC's TV Box. The network is currently working out distribution deals in up to ten European and Asian countries, building their global video-on-demand service. They don't detail exactly which shows will be a part of the package, other than a mention of both current and past series being involved.

That's all fine and dandy, but the interesting bit comes from something NBC's Belinda Menendez says. Apparently, the big shows, like Heroes, may be available before they are broadcast for an extra price. And that leads us to the question in the post title.

For the sake of argument, let's assume this all works out for the peacock bunch in Europe and Asia and they make it a global policy. Would the prospect of getting Thursday's episode of The Office on Monday be enough to let those sticky Donaghy fingers into your wallet?

Continue reading Would you pay a premium to watch shows early?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
