Hey gang, here's what happening in the world of cartoons:

A new Simpsons game, possibly created to coincide with the movie, has been showing up on some retailer's list as "The Simpsons Game." Electronic Arts is publishing the game, which will be available for pretty much all the major platforms, including Wii.

Continue reading Animation news: Toonami, Ralph Bakshi and games

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Help the lady astronaut break up the happy couple

Filed under: Cable, Games, Web, Game Show

Well, this is going to take up a little while this afternoon.

The Game Show Network has a new game on their site called Astronaut Moonstalker, and though it sounds like one of those cheesy movie you always see on The Sci-Fi Channel, it's actually a space game based on the female astronaut who put on a diaper to drive 900 miles and kidnap a romantic rival.

It's a fun, well-designed game. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, you pilot a spacecraft around rocks, monsters, and space debris to land next to the happy couple and break them up (by telling the woman bad things about the guy). You also get bonus points if you collect the red hearts that are floating through space, and your progress is tracked by a "diaper meter." Play the game after the jump (or play the bigger version at the link above).

Continue reading Help the lady astronaut break up the happy couple

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

New Battlestar game coming to Xbox Live

Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Battlestar Galactica, Games, Sci Fi
In what seems like a no-brainer idea, NBC Universal is partnering with Sierra Online on a high-def, space combat, Battlestar Galactica game. Who doesn't want to fly a Viper or a Raider? Players will be able to choose which side they fight for while taking part in both single-player, and multi-player, versions of the game.

The big news of the announcement is that the game will be available in the Xbox Live Marketplace. This is the first original Hollywood-licensed property for the still growing service. To kick off the promotion, fans can now get Battlestar gamer pics and theme packs from the Marketplace. Thankfully, for those of you that haven't jumped on the 360 bandwagon yet, the game will also be available for the PC and downloadable from SciFi.com, NBC.com, and Sierra.com. It is slated for a fall release.

Sierra will be adding sound from the series and was able to visit the set to get the look and details right. They also have secured likeness rights to talent from the show, and mention the possibility of the actors providing radio chatter for the in game play. The article also talks about the possibility of adding episodes of the show to the Xbox service.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Five: The Ultimate Lost Quiz

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, ABC, Lost, The Five, Games

So, you've seen every single episode of Lost and you own all the DVDs and you consider yourself an expert. Players will re-enact familiar island adventures and experience new ones as Jack, who is hilariously described by Gameloft as the "charismatic hero" of the series. Many of the settings, characters, and plotlines from earlier episodes are recreated for the game. Gameloft's official site (see above link) includes screenshots, downloadable wallpaper and screensavers, and a demo of the game's first chapter.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

You too could win a pimped out john

Filed under: HDTV, PVR Wire, Video, Cable/Satellite, Games, Web

Do you spend a lot of time in the bathroom? Roto-Rooter is holding a contest, and the winner gets the deluxe, luxury toilet in the picture on the right.

The toilet - which the company is calling a "bathroom oasis" - comes complete with an Avanti Compact Refrigerator with a beer tap, an iPod, an iCarta iPod dock with tissue holder, a Baseline pedal exerciser, a dual-sided magnification mirror, a megaphone (to call your family members for more toilet paper, I guess), a personal cooling fan, a USB powered coffee mug and warmer, an Xbox 360, a TiVo, a Gateway laptop computer, a Philips 20" LCD Flat Panel TV and a Philips DVD player.

Wow, the winner of this probably won't ever have to leave the house again. The contest ends April 2, and the winner will be announced on April 25 (National Plumber's Day).

As you might imagine, it took all of three seconds before people started creating celebrity Miis and uploading them to the internet. Search "mii" in flickr, and you'll find Amy Sedaris as Jerri Blank, Spike Lee and Borat. Kottee hosted a celebrity Mii contest back in December, which resulted in my favorite Mii to date - David Foster Wallace playing tennis.

It was just a matter of time before an Office fanatic had too much time on his hands and created Office Miis - the entire cast of the Emmy Award-winning show as Nintendo avatars. Jim, Dwight and Kevin look the best, but they're all little works of time-wasting, pop culture-inspired art. You can check them out on Flickr.

[Via Digg]

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

South Park goes mobile, plus Comedy Central and Spike launch new Web shows

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Video, Animation, Games, Web, South Park, Comedy Central, Spike

Both Comedy Central and Spike TV are launching new Web series this year. Comedy Central plans to launch eleven new series for its Motherload site, including a show featuring Muslim American comedians called The Watch List, and a spinoff of Drawn Together called Judge Fudge.

Spike TV has eight new Web series slated for 2007, including Spike's Hottest Bartenders, Miss March Madness and FMX Prague.

There will also be a South Park wireless application launched in association with South Park Studios that will feature an avatar maker, clips from every season, Q&As with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, messageboards, production blogs, and artwork. Strangely enough, that's pretty much exactly what you can find on the South Park Studios Web site for free. Maybe this wireless app will have things you can't find on the site, but it sounds like they're simply offering what's on the site through a new platform.

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Battlestar Galactica pen-and-paper RPG on its way

Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Battlestar Galactica, Games
Like many people, I was a little skeptical when I heard that someone was re-imagining Battlestar Galactica way back when. It seemed like an idea that could blow up in so many ways. We know now that Ronald D. Moore and his team pulled it off in a big way, but the reason I tuned in that first time was because I heard that if you looked really closely, in a certain scene, you would see Serenity fly across the screen.

I'm off on a bit of a tangent there, but not completely. The two universes meet again in the world of pen-and-paper RPGs. Margaret Weis Productions, the people behind the Serenity RPG, are now at work on a Battlestar Galactica game based on the same system. Plans call for a quickstart guide in early 2007 with the full game being released in the spring. The MWP site is under construction, but you can read the whole press release at OgreCave.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Firefly to be reborn as MMORPG

Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, OpEd, Games, Web, Firefly
The idea for a Firefly based MMORPG is one that has been floating around for a long time. When the show was first canceled, that was among the many ideas for ways to keep flying. Now comes word that Multiverse has struck a deal with Fox Licensing to make the game. Wired has the complete story.

In a nutshell, Multiverse is a company founded by a team of Netscape veterans. Their aim is to create a universal platform that independent developers can create games on. The advantage being that it will be easier for smaller teams to develop games, and consumers will have the advantage of using one client that is able to play the various Multiverse products. Reportedly, there are already 7000 development teams working with the platform. The Firefly game is the big feather in the Multiverse cap that will get them some much needed mainstream press. Like this.

Continue reading Firefly to be reborn as MMORPG

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

You too can be a Law and Order writer

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, NBC, Law and Order, Games, Web

The Mayor of Television (hey, they had an election for Mayor of Television? Why didn't anyone tell us??) has invented the Law and Order Fantasy League Game. Basically, you guess which "ripped from the headlines" story one of the Law and Order shows (the original, Criminal Intent, and Special Victims Unit) is going to <strike>ripoff</strike> write an homage to. Will it be Michael Richards? The O.J. Simpson book controversy?

But you can't just guess which show is going to do which plot and be done with it. You have to tweak it a little bit, so it's "original" (cough cough). So, maybe a former sitcom actor says some nasty racial remarks, only this time it's not at a comedy club, it's at a private party. Or maybe a former pro baseball star (not a football star! accused of killing his parents (not his ex-wife and her friend!) decides to create a web site (not publish a book!) showing pics of the murder scene and how he might have done it.

The Mayor's idea for a Michael Richards-inspired story is more elaborate than mine, and would fit the L&O world nicely.

The series examines famous gun battles from history, as well as recent battles waged in Iraq. Reality game company Kuma Games, a site that recreates gun battles will launch online games simultaneously to match the Shootout! episodes when they air. I'm not exactly sure what the point is supposed to be, other than a gimmick to get people to watch the series. The idea of turning these real battles into a game seems more than a little tacky, and I'm not sure I see the educational value in it. If the idea is that the games somehow allow you to relive the battle, I don't buy it. No matter how "real" you try to make it, there's no more of an emotional connection tied to these games then there is to something like Doom or Tomb Raider. The idea that these are somehow educational is more than a little foolish. I've placed a trailer after the jump.
Continue reading History Channel partners with online game company

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Nokia offering Cartoon Network downloads

Filed under: Cable, Industry, Video, Animation, Games

Turner Broadcasting and Nokia recently inked a deal that will see content from Cartoon Network offered through the Nokia Content Discoverer client which is currently available on a number of Nokia devices. The special client is designed to make it easier for users to find content to download. The deal only includes clips and games of shows such as Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls and Johnny Bravo, but not full episodes, though perhaps full episodes aren't possible with this particular client. I wouldn't know since I don't really do that whole mobile phone or handheld device thing. It's just not my bag, you dig? I knew you could. Anyway, if you don't have this particular client but still like to watch cartoons on a tiny screen, you can always get some of these 'toons from iTunes, too.

A few World of Warcraft fans took it upon themselves to add a list of incongruities to the episode's Wikipedia page, pointing out various places throughout the episode where the game the kids are playing differs from the actual version. Most of those claims have been removed from the entry, but you can read a spirited discussion about the relevance of those claims here, and if you really feel like killing time, you can pore through the entry's history. Ah, nerds and the Web, they fit together just like peanut butter and jelly. Admittedly, I'm a nerd myself, but for cartoons. World of Warcraft I couldn't care less about, but if I found some misinformation on Mr. Magoo you can be sure I'd have something to say about it. We all have our weaknesses, after all.

It's an interactive online game, styled like reality TV, brought to you by AOL and Survivor/<strike>Amazing Race</strike> producer Mark Burnett. Anyone can play. $2 million in gold bars has been hidden throughout the United States in 13 caches. To win, players should keep their eyes peeled for clues at AOL.com, in magazines, and on television. Quintessential D-lister, Kathy Griffin is on board in various capacities, and the main site has a blog, (or glog as they're calling it) where she and others are posting entries about the game. Her first post is pretty funny.

The introductory video on the site has some of the same elements that make up the opening segments of any of Burnett's trademark shows. There are spinning graphics, a fleet of thirteen black SUV's in a secret underground location ready to carry the gold to its secret destinations, a reality-TV hosty-type guy, and -- just to get you in the mood -- a spectacular musical theme reminiscent of The Amazing Race. There's lots poke around the site and see. I barely scratched the surface.

If any of you here happens to win a chunk of the gold, don't forget your friends at TV Squad. At least post a comment here to gloat.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Coming this winter: American Idol karaoke game

Filed under: Industry, American Idol, Games, Music and Variety
Karoake Revolution is releasing an American Idol version of its game for PlayStation 2, complete with original American Idol tunes and judgements from Randy and Simon. Players can cover one of 40 songs, including Taylor Hicks' "Do I Make You Proud", Bo Bice's "The Real Thing", Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings", and Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway". You can also channel William Hung, by singing "She Bangs". Once you've finished your song, Randy and Simon will have some remarks for you. Paula Abdul's not involved, but you can cover her '80s hit "Straight Up".

This sounds like a game for the pre-teen set at slumber parties or their very first boy-girl parties. I can see it now: an 11-year-old girl's night is ruined when Simon tells her she's the worst singer ever.

[Via TV Filter]

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Tony Jay dead

Filed under: Talent, Games, Celebrities, Obituaries

Yes, the headline would usually include the "at (age)," but I can't find anything that says what his age was. Nothing on the IMDB, and nothing on his site either.

You would recognize Jay's voice as much as his face, as he voiced an incredible number of cartoons over the years, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Reboot, Spiderman, Teen Titans, Superman, The Mighty Ducks, Gargoyles, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as a massive number of videogames: World of Warcraft, X-Men Legends, Lionhearts, various Star Trek games, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and just about every other video game ever made that used a voice. But he had live action roles in TV and movies too, including Lois and Clark, Newhart, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., Mr. Belvedere, Twin Peaks, Beauty and the Beast, Eerie, Indiana, Matlock, Murphy Brown, Picket Fences, and The Golden Girls. He was also a Royal Shakespeare Company actor and a singer.

He died earlier this week after surgery for removal of a non-cancerous growth on his lungs.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Lost and Desperate Housewives to become mobile phone games

Filed under: ABC, Industry, OpEd, Desperate Housewives, Lost, Games
Today, game developer Gameloft is going to announce a multi-year agreement with Touchstone Television; under the agreement, Gameloft will develop mobile phone games based on Touchstone-produced shows. It will also be announced that the first two shows to get the mobile game treatment will be Lost and Desperate Housewives.

Now, with all the mysteries and symbols and codes that float around Lost, I can easily see how that can be made into an engaging game. But Housewives? What are they going to have the game players do in that one? Have Gabrielle sleep with the housepainter instead of the gardner? Have Bree kill another husband? Give Lynette another screaming kid? Since Gameloft has also made The O.C. into a video game, I'm sure they're capable of creating something interesting. But I don't think a Housewives game would hold my interest while I take the train into the city.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Can a video game make Star Trek cool again?

Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Industry, Games
William Shatner has faith that a new video game will give Star Trek a higher profile, after it has apparently fallen off the American radar. The game is called Star Trek: Legacy and, of course, he's voicing Capt. Kirk's character. The game will span all five of the franchise's television series, allowing players to fly 60 different space ships and encounter all sorts of aliens, including battling the Klingons and The Borg. Shatner hopes the game will hold over fans until 2008, when the next movie is due out.

Star Trek: Legacy comes out in October.

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

More proof that computers won't replace televisions

Filed under: Industry, HDTV, PVR Wire, Video, Cable/Satellite, Games, Web

Having a computer/TV setup seems like a dream come true, especially for couch potatoes and geeks. You can watch TV, download music and movies, surf the web, and check e-mail from the comfort of your couch, using a remote to control the megasystem that's in one area of your house. So how come we haven't really seen that happen yet?

Slate has an interesting piece today that talks about computer/TV products that never came to be, or came to be and then quickly died (like the Viiv):

"My theory is that PC-TV hybrid products like Viiv aim for a sweet spot that doesn't exist. Very savvy consumers will hack together these setups themselves. The less savvy will just keep their TVs and computers separate. And the folks in the middle? If they're around, nobody has found them yet."

Hmmm...I consider myself in the middle. I'm a bit savvy, but I still want to keep my computers and TV separate. Not because I wouldn't necessarily want to have a computer/TV mix if a perfect setup could be created. It's more because I don't really see a need to have my computer on my TV, or vice versa. And I don't want to play games on my cellphone or watch a TV on my refrigerator or take notes on a Blackberry.

What do you think?
