If you haven't seen the episode yet and want to avoid spoilers, read no further!

When an explosion ripped through Dell's home, it landed his wife Heather and daughter Betsey in the hospital. The big reveal is that Heather had, in fact, NOT given up drugs -- as she'd led Dell to believe -- and was cooking up some meth in the kitchen with Betsey in the next room. While Betsey escaped mostly unscathed, the explosion caused severe burns on Heather's entire body.

At the hospital, Dell was seriously ticked at his wife, telling her nearly comatose body that, in essence, he hated her and hoped she would die. The other part of the equation is that Dell refused to let Betsey see her mother, wanting to shield her from the monster -- both figuratively and physically -- that her mother encompassed.

So what do you think? Should Dell have allowed Betsey to see her mother at the hospital? And was Pete right in wanting to force the issue?
(S01E07) "You can check my University of Phoenix online degree. Go Cardinals." - lawyer Moz

The previews for this fall finale promised there would be an ending that we'd never see coming. That's usually a huge help in actually figuring out what the "surprise" ending is to a TV show. If we don't expect it, we know what to not expect and we can often figure out what happens. I didn't see this ending coming at all. I mean, I knew that the guy we thought was the bad guy wasn't really part of the solution. That was just a red herring. But I didn't expect who was at the door and who was in the chair in the final scene.

Thank God this show is coming back next month and not in March like so many other shows seem to be doing.
Continue reading Review: White Collar - Free Fall

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Starz set to spill Spartacus: Blood and Sand in January

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Programming, Reality-Free
"I am Spartacus!"

Okay. No, I'm not. But if Starz's Spartacus: Blood and Sand is any good, it could reintroduce a new generation of fans to the legend of a slave taking on an empire. The original Stanley Kubrick-directed classic is an immortal part of entertainment history, but it's one of those films that you don't see on TV much in the age of DVDs.

According to a network release, Starz will premiere their take on Spartacus in 13 one-hour episodes kicking off Friday, January 22nd at 10 p.m. If you see previews for the series and get flashbacks to 300, you're not imagining things. It's clear the producers tapped into that stylized, graphic novel style for the show's visuals.

Shot in New Zealand, the show employs CGI, digital imaging tricks and other cinematic effects to sweeten the show's look.
Continue reading Starz set to spill Spartacus: Blood and Sand in January

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies mini-series just a rumor

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free
Apparently the news of a zombie invasion on your TV screen was just a work of fiction.

Earlier, we reported on the production of a six-part mini-series based on the hilarious (I've just started reading it, Jane Austen was never this funny) Pride and Prejudice and Zombies book by Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith by a British production company. Today the co-author of the book, who has a second mashup title in the works based on the life of Abraham Lincoln as a hard-edged vampire hunter, denied the news. And if you have to ask which author, please have your head examined by something other than a can opener and a very good friend.

The "living" author wrote on his Twitter page, "there's NO TRUTH to those PPZ 'miniseries' rumors" and noted on his Facebook page that efforts are being made to produce the series as a theatrical film. Sigh, I guess the only time we'll get to see anything zombie-related on our TVs is footage of the inevitable religious apocalypse.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies could invade your TV screen

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free
If you're a fan of sweeping 19th century British tales of lost innocence and moral influences and zombies, God has answered your prayers.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the wildly popular adaptation of Jane Austen's famous novel infused with kick-ass zombie action by writer Seth Grahame-Smith, is being made into a six-part TV mini-series. Groovy! Is there any chance they could convince Keira Knightley to don the frock one more time and pick up a kitana for some serious Elizabethan ass kicking?

The series hasn't scored a network or even a start date since the production has barely made its way out of its egg shell, but the project seems promising so far. Deadline Productions is at the ship's helm who produced a very quirky looking science-fiction cop series called Phoo Action for the BBC. Make sure you wait at least one hour after taking your ecstasy before viewing the trailer.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Eastwick - Tasers and Mind Erasers

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S01E09) "Do you remember what happened to Gloria that day? Because I do. We both have our secrets, Bun. I'll keep yours if you keep mine." - Darryl

Well, darn. As I mentioned last week, Eastwick keeps getting better and better. This week's episode was the best yet! Funny, dramatic, good characters, and some tense action at the end. And the best part is that the witches are finally realizing their powers and using them for good. If the series continued, we might see that they'd be tempted to use their powers for more nefarious purpose.

We also saw Darryl get a little more evil-ish with Bun. It made me realize that perhaps he's not the gadabout town guy who just loves women and being a big-shot. Then again, maybe he's not as bad a guy as I think (see above quote).
Continue reading Review: Eastwick - Tasers and Mind Erasers

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

What were the ten most-watched TV episodes of the decade?

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Comedy Shows, Other Reality Shows, Reality-Free
Some of this list is going to be very predictable and some of it is going to surprise you.

The Hollywood Reporter has the list of the ten most-watched TV episodes of the past ten years. Now, you know that shows like American Idol (season six premiere), Survivor (first season finale), and Friends (series finale) would be on the list, but how about the series finale of Spin City? Maybe it's because I never got into that show but I never really thought it would make the top ten (of the decade anyway). The ER episode where Lucy died is also in the top ten, as is the Grey's Anatomy episode that aired after the Super Bowl in 2006. The number three episode? Well, that just surprises and depresses the hell out of me.

Any episodes not make it that you thought would be on such a list?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Matt Houston might be coming to DVD next year

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, TV on DVD, Reality-Free
It's funny how shows you didn't think would ever be released are suddenly released on DVD. Case in point: Matt Houston, the series from the early '80s that starred Lee Horsley as a Texas-born private eye. Yes, his last name was Houston and he was born in Texas. It's always great when your last name is also the name of a city in your state. Maybe the show didn't trust viewers enough to know that even though he lives in Los Angeles HE'S A COWBOY.
Perhaps so because today's Hollywood Reporter claims that ABC will move Ugly Betty to Wednesday at 10 p.m. in the spot currently occupied by Eastwick.

Hey, that's what I was advocating. It just makes sense. Eastwick is playing out the string. It's not coming back. ABC has decided to burn off the remaining episodes, but it can do that anywhere on the schedule... even on Friday nights.

But Ugly Betty deserves a chance to come back to the glory days when it was competitive in the ratings. Notice I didn't say it was a Nielsen winner; it never really was. But it was in there trying and it was an award-winning show so that made it all right. It was a trade-off for ABC.
Continue reading Ugly Betty is moving from Friday night after all

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Goodbye Raising The Bar

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Programming, Cancellations, Reality-Free

I don't know how many people will miss TNT's Raising The Bar. It was one of those shows that you never really heard people talking about - fans or critics - even though it had a pretty high-profile cast, including Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Jane Kaczmarek. The 2008 premiere actually grabbed over 7.7 million viewers, but that number dropped 50% for the second season premiere, so the writing was on the wall.

TNT has canceled the legal drama. There are still a few episodes that haven't aired yet and they will probably be shown sometime in early 2010.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Three Rivers will spend December on the shelf

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Programming, OpEd, Reality-Free
You knew it was a bad sign in November when CBS decided to flip flop Cold Case and Three Rivers to test whether it was the time slots that were dictating the sliding ratings of the Sunday night dramas.

The results were hardly conclusive, but consistently drawing less than 2.0 in the demographics has doomed Three Rivers. CBS has pulled Three Rivers off the schedule for December. Merry Christmas, Alex O'Loughlin lovers.

This is the first step to cancellation and anyone who tells you otherwise is blowing smoke. Despite a big star in the center, Three Rivers is an earnest medical drama that's just not catching on with viewers. CBS will complete the 13-episode order and then kiss the show bye-bye.
Continue reading Three Rivers will spend December on the shelf

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Why is ABC treating Ugly Betty so badly?

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Ratings, Reality-Free
The ratings are in from Friday night -- that was the Friday after Thanksgiving, a night when the major networks were showing movies and reruns -- and, not surprising, the numbers are pretty low.

Oh, wait, one network had new shows, ABC. But the ratings for a new Ugly Betty at 9 p.m. were dismal. Ugly Betty came in dead last with just a 0.9/3, only 3.39 million viewers for that timeslot.

A few weeks ago, I thought -- hoped -- things were looking up for Ugly Betty. It looked like the show was going to get a timeslot switch to Eastwick's Wednesday at 10 p.m. Alas, ABC has done nothing. Eastwick is not picked up for the season and it's still losing in that spot -- it had a 1.2/4 and just 3.89 million viewers this past week. That said, why isn't ABC giving Betty some love with a time change?
Continue reading Why is ABC treating Ugly Betty so badly?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Monk -- Mr. Monk and the End (Part 1)

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S08E15) If you were thinking that the penultimate episode of Monk, the next to last show, would be a gag fest filled with sight gags and spit takes, you were wrong. (S01E06) "You're weird." - Little girl, to Peter

What, no Thanksgiving episode? They could have had a plot where Caffrey has to find a diamond that was hidden in the carcass of a frozen Butterball turkey in the local supermarket. Or maybe some secret microfilm hidden inside a giant bowl of yams covered in marshmallows. They did mention that Christmas was coming up, so they seem to be in the right time of year. They should have had some of the characters watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving or the Macy's Parade or something.
Continue reading Review: White Collar - All In

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Getting set for Big Love's return with a new promo video

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Video, Reality-Free
You want to talk about holiday cheer and gifts that keep on giving, take a look at what we have to expect from TV starting in January. For instance, Big Love is coming back to HBO on January 10.

But that's not all. Leverage announced a return date this week, and there's also Burn Notice and The Closer, NBC has Chuck. And Breaking Bad is returning to AMC in March.
How great is all that TV - and I haven't even mentioned Lost or 24! Advice to all television fans; if you don't already have the best equipment in your TV room, if you're hankering for HD or have been worried about your DVR, upgrade your stuff now - ask Santa Claus for what you want - and get ready for the new year bounty.
Continue reading Getting set for Big Love's return with a new promo video

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

TNT sets return date for Leverage

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Programming, OpEd, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free
This morning some good news leaked out sooner than expected, although I don't think it was that big a surprise to learn that TNT is bringing Leverage back on Wednesday, January 13 at 10 p.m. Surprise news or not, it's still great to know that we have fresh episodes coming in early 2010.

There are six episodes of Leverage left from season two, then the third season will commence in the summer. This set up is a lot like The Closer, and you know how well that split schedule has been working. By the way, you do know that split schedules is one of the things I'm most grateful about this holiday season, don't you?
Continue reading TNT sets return date for Leverage

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

President Bartlet pardons a turkey (and teaches us a little about stuffing)

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Video, Reality-Free
One of favorite aspects of Thanksgiving, besides the turkey and the stuffing and the pie, is that I get to watch the Thanksgiving episodes of The West Wing. Yeah, I guess I could watch the episodes any time of year since I own them on DVD, but that's not how I roll.

Here are two classic scenes from the show. The first is from the episode "Shibboleth" where President Bartlet pardons a turkey, and the second, after the jump, is from "The Indians in the Lobby," the scene where he calls the Butterball hotline.

The adventures of Shawn and Gus will continue. USA announced today that Psych is coming back for season five, with 16 new episodes ordered up.

This, my friends, is a no-brainer. Psych is one of USA's more reliable hours, a comedy-mystery series that has a loyal following. This past summer season -- which will soon be completed in the winter when the second half of the episodes air beginning in late January (the date hasn't been confirmed yet) -- the show performed especially well in younger demographics.
Continue reading USA orders more Psych

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: White Collar - The Portrait

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S01E05) I don't think I've sighed as hard as I sighed during the opening scene of this episode of White Collar in a long time. Caffrey and Moz find a note hidden by Kate ... in Grand Central Station? And not even in the station, but in the corner of the building outside. Did I miss some massive clue that Caffrey was following to find the exact location of the note shoved into a crack? Or are we just supposed to assume he's so smart and perceptive that he can find an old note within three minutes of showing up in front of the building? If I missed something, it was silly. If that's exactly how it went down, then it was kinda stupid.

Fun episode, though!
Continue reading Review: White Collar - The Portrait

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
