Some shine brighter than others simply because they are so supremely talented that they raise the level of the drama they are creating. There are two women I'm writing about now. They are both daytime actresses of the highest order. One celebrated her birthday yesterday, May 7th. She's One Life to Live's inimitable Dorian Cramer, actress Robin Strasser. The other, I'm sad to report, passed away last weekend. The incomparable Beverlee McKinsey was famous for two characters: Iris Carrington on Another World and Alexandra Spaulding on Guiding Light. Ms. McKinsey, who'd retired from daytime -- and acting overall -- in 1992 (except for a brief cameo on General Hospital) died on Friday evening from kidney failure after undergoing a transplant.

I remember vividly watching Another World when Beverlee McKinsey was front and center. She was a dynamic actress, a real scene stealer. She commanded your attention as the spoiled, grown daughter of millionaire scion MacKenzie Cory, Iris, on Another World. Her voice saying, "Daddy," is embedded in my memory.

Gallery: Soap Report - 2 Queens
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/soap-report-2-queens/793500/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/soap-report-2-queens/793475/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/soap-report-2-queens/793471/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/soap-report-2-queens/793446/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/soap-report-2-queens/793473/">

Continue reading TV Squad Soap Report: Two of daytime's all-time best

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Star Jones and Barbara Walters not BFFs

Filed under: Daytime, Celebrities, Talk Show, Reality-Free

I think we can totally forget about Star Jones and Barbara Walters exchanging Christmas gifts this year.

The former View host/Court TV host is quite angry at Walters for various things that Walters says in her new memoir, Audition. Among the many reveals in the book is the fact that Walters had an affair with a married Senator back in the 80s. This doesn't please Jones at all, and she's also upset at Walters' version of the events that led to Jones being axed from The View. Walters reveals that they all knew that Jones lost a lot of weight by having gastric bypass surgery and that the other hosts were ticked that they had to lie about how Jones lost the weight on the air.

Before that, she was a Westchester County judge and a rising star in New York's Republican Party. She was once seen in People magazine's "most beautiful" issue.

Pirro has had a history of interesting problems that have held her back in one way or another. When she challenged Hillary Clinton for the Senate, she lost a page of her announcement and was speechless for 32 seconds. There are also the issues she's had with her soon-to-be-ex-husband, Albert Pirro (who has been hit with both a paternity suit and a tax fraud conviction).

Daytime television judges have been around since Judge Wapner and The People's Court. A few months ago, TV Squad judged nine of them. I guess we have one more to add to the mix.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Another fave returns to One Life to Live

Is that Carlo Hesser I spy? It looks a lot like Hawk from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century? Actually, it's both, and his name Thom Christopher. The veteran character actor, who most recently was Colonel Dax on Guiding Light, is coming back to the soap that he's best known for, One Life to Live. In 1992, he won a Daytime Emmy for this role. Soap Opera Digest reports that Thom's will resume the role of Carlo Hesser, evil-doer extraordinare, on June 27.

Christopher's comeback comes on the heels of the major announcement, that is the return of Andrea Evans as Tina Lord Roberts after a nearly two decade absence. And One Life isn't done with the splashy returns. Susan Haskell, another former Emmy-winner (for her role as Marty Saybrooke), is also finding her way to Llanview. Never mind that her character plunged off a cliff in a van last year (when Christina Chambers played the part). You'll see, she was thrown from the vehicle and survived somehow. Trust me. Like sci-fi, soap opera deaths are not as final as you think.
Continue reading Another fave returns to One Life to Live

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Ellen not happy with Rachael Ray and Rosie

Filed under: Programming, Daytime, Celebrities, Talk Show, Reality-Free

Rachael Ray aired a special tribute episode for Rosie O'Donnell today, and Ellen DeGeneres' show isn't happy about it.

Rosie O'Donnell appeared on the special episode earlier today, one day after Telepictures (the company that syndicates Ellen) called and tried to get the episode pulled. That's right, a company called the day before an episode aired to try and get it pulled. The four actresses that have caught my attention are now or have played a "Carly" on daytime TV. They are all terrific actresses. They've all brought something dynamic and exciting to their characters, even when they are no longer named Carly. The four ladies in question are Laura Wright, the current Carly Corinthos Jacks on General Hospital, Maura West, Carly Tenney Snyder on As the World Turns, Tamara Braun, Carly #2 on GH and currently Ava Vitali on Days of Our Lives, and Sarah Brown, Carly #1 on GH and presently Claudia Zacchara on GH. Each woman has made a lasting impression on daytime, and they continue to rattle the rafters still.

Gallery: Soap Report - Carlys
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/soap-report-carlys/779851/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/soap-report-carlys/779862/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/soap-report-carlys/779850/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/soap-report-carlys/779849/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/soap-report-carlys/779865/">

Continue reading TV Squad Soap Report: The Carlys of my life

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Did David Blaine break a record on Oprah today?

Filed under: Daytime, Celebrities, Talk Show, Reality-Free

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! MAGICAL SPOILERS!

On today's edition of Oprah, which many people in the country have already seen, magician/stunt artist David Blaine attempted to break the world record for a person holding their breath. My initial reaction is this: there are so many repeat nominees! This list is filled with actors who have won multiple times. Are the Daytime Emmys in a rut? I'm afraid so. This list seems very stale to me, not that many of these performers aren't worthy, but a lot of other worthy actors were completely overlooked. Again. Emmy could use an overhaul, but we'll discuss that another time.

Here are the main nominees -- and some comments -- and you can check out the complete list and a photo gallery of the Daytime Emmy nominees at AOL Television. On Friday, June 20, ABC will broadcast the awards in primetime (8-11 p.m. EST) from the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Outstanding Daytime Drama
General Hospital
Guiding Light
One Life to Live
The Young & the Restless

Here we have the usual suspects. Last year, Y&R and GL shared the prize. My choice would be OLTL this time around -- they had a great year and have been on the uprise. However, Y&R has a lot of actor nominations and that could mean another Emmy for the Bell show. I'd be flabbergasted if either GH or GL win. Both shows have received critical blasts this past year.

Continue reading The Daytime Emmy nominations announced

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

TV Squad Soap Report: Bold and not too nice right now

In the DNA of all soaps is the idea that every story reflects the morality of the times. There are lessons to be learned from both the good characters as well as the villains. This is Soap Opera 101. Lately, though, I've noticed a nasty streak of overt righteousness and insufferable superiority creeping into some of the most complex, morally challenged characters ever on The Bold & the Beautiful - Brooke and Ridge. It's gotten so bad that I've had to wonder, what's going on with Bradley Bell and his staff of scribes? Is this the residual effects of the Writer's Strike because a few of the core elements of B&B are out of whack and need to be addressed?

Gallery: TV Squad Soap Report 4 - B&B
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/tv-squad-soap-report-4-bandb/767193/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/tv-squad-soap-report-4-bandb/767196/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/tv-squad-soap-report-4-bandb/767199/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/tv-squad-soap-report-4-bandb/767201/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/tv-squad-soap-report-4-bandb/767203/">

Continue reading TV Squad Soap Report: Bold and not too nice right now

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Star Jones files for divorce

Filed under: Daytime, Celebrities, Talk Show
Star Jones filed for divorce from her husband of three years, Al Reynolds. I really wouldn't bother typing this up if Jones hadn't made such a big deal about her wedding back when she was on The View. Remember the whole, painful ordeal? Star would not shut up about her over-the-top wedding, and the sponsors she had lined up for it. According to Barbara Walters, Star's disgusting behavior surrounding her wedding was the reason her contract was not renewed with ABC. It turns out the viewers didn't want to hear another word about her over-hyped event.

Here's her official statement about the divorce:

"Several years ago I made an error in judgment by inviting the media into the most intimate area of my life. A month ago I filed for divorce."

Is she really blaming the media for her divorce? Because a marriage isn't actually based on the wedding. Star also says she's going to handle her divorce with dignity and come out "a wiser woman". Somehow I doubt that.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Days of Our Lives tops poll as most searched soap

You might be surprised to learn that the results of a new poll by AOL.com found that the number one soap opera among web searchers is Day of Our Lives. But I'm not surprised to read these AOL results, which shows Days, General Hospital and All My Children at the top of the list. Y&R is number eight. Also getting a lot of search engine hits is a Spanish telenovela, Fuego en la Sangre, from Mexico.

Continue reading Days of Our Lives tops poll as most searched soap

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Ten actors who helped make General Hospital shine

Filed under: OpEd, Daytime, TV Squad Lists, Reality-Free
In honor of General Hospital's 45th year on the air, AOL came up with a terrific photo trivia quiz which was like a trip down memory lane for longtime fans like me. Seeing all those familiar faces made me realize that through the years there have been some wonderful actors who've called Port Charles home. Here's ten that were memorable and, in my opinion, let an indelible mark on General Hospital.

Amber Tamblyn (1995-2001)
When the producers and writers of GH realized the quality of an actress they had with Amber Tamblyn, they took this 12 year old girl and made her an important part of the Quartermaines, a core family. She appeared as Emily Bowen, the daughter of Page, a woman Monica befriended while they were undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. When Page died, Monica and Alan adopted Emily and she became part of the family, and eventually the conscience of the squabbling, occasionally unscrupulous clan (along with Lila). Amber grew up on GH, going through growth spurts and the emotions of the awkward years. She never failed to convey a reality and truth in her acting. She was a shooting star, passing through GH on the way to bigger things, like Joan of Arcadia.

Gallery: Ten actor who made General Hospital shine
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/ten-actor-who-made-general-hospital-shine/760037/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/ten-actor-who-made-general-hospital-shine/760039/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/ten-actor-who-made-general-hospital-shine/760051/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/ten-actor-who-made-general-hospital-shine/760053/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/ten-actor-who-made-general-hospital-shine/760054/">

Continue reading Ten actors who helped make General Hospital shine

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

CBS renews Guiding Light for another year

Filed under: Daytime, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free
It's with a big sigh of relief that I report that Michael Logan at TV Guide has confirmed that CBS has booked Guiding Light for one more year. That'll make it 72 years of continuous broadcasting -- radio and television. No program can match Guiding Light's longevity, and I would hate to see CBS cancel a show with this kind of legacy.

That said, Guiding Light needs to have a better year going forth than they've had looking back. In fact, since tying with The Young and the Restless last June as Outstanding Daytime Drama at the Emmys, the show has been going through major transitions. The new style of filming, shooting on locations in a New Jersey town that's being used as the fictional Springfield, began on February 29, and it hasn't been welcomed by the critics or viewers.
Continue reading CBS renews Guiding Light for another year

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Kathy Hilton to guest star on The Young and the Restless

Filed under: Daytime, Celebrities, Casting, Reality-Free

I always imagined that being a Hilton is like living in a soap opera--wealth, scandal, and the occasional arrest. Apparently real life isn't dramatic enough for one member of the Hilton clan. Paris' mother, Kathy Hilton, will appear on The Young and the Restless as herself. The episode, which will air on May 13, was filmed on Wednesday.

Hilton's fictional self will ruffle some feathers in her Y&R cameo by taking over a magazine photo shoot. I'm not sure where that falls on a soap opera's bad behavior scale, but I'm sure that such workplace antics will at least earn Kathy a few dirty looks. The Hiltons have had plenty of TV exposure over the last month. Paris just did a cameo on a recent episode of My Name is Earl. Barron Hilton, Paris' brother, became a gossip show regular following his DUI arrest.

Continue reading Kathy Hilton to guest star on The Young and the Restless

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Martha Stewart's dog shuffles off mortal coil

Filed under: Food/Home/DIY, OpEd, Daytime, Celebrities, Reality-Free
Television icon Martha Stewart has suffered a family tragedy when her dog Paw Paw passed away from renal failure. He was almost 13 dog years old.

The dog's full name was "Kublai Khan Paw Paw Chow Chow". He was a 60 pound chow and had appeared on Martha's television programs a few times.

I admit I am neither a fan of dogs nor a fan of Martha but I find any death of a beloved pet to be tragic. All this being said, the conspiracy theorist in me wonders if we're being told the entire truth of the situation. I have a few alternate theories on Paw Paw's death:
Continue reading Martha Stewart's dog shuffles off mortal coil

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Cindy McCain to guest host on The View

Filed under: Daytime, Talk Show, Reality-Free
Now we know that we're getting serious when it comes to the 2008 presidential campaign: Cindy McCain, wife of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, will co-host on The View on Monday, according to both the AP and the show's own web site. Mrs. McCain has been on the show before, appearing with her husband in 2004, and Sen. McCain has been on the show a number of times, most recently last week. But this is the first time either of them have sat with the hosts for the entire episode.

As the AP article mentions, there's no word on whether Mrs. McCain will share any recipes on the show. Why is that significant? Nothing really, just a little bit of plagiarism committed by an overzealous campaign intern; the intern reprinted recipes from various Food Network personalities, including Rachael Ray, on the campaign's web site and tried to pass them off as "McCain Family Recipes." I'm surprised people didn't get suspicious sooner, because I don't think I've ever heard either McCain say the word "Yum-o."

[via Mediabistro]

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

TV Squad Soap Report: The retro Days of Our Lives

Let me start this TV Squad Soap Report by saying that I have a soft spot in my heart for Days of Our Lives. It's the first soap I remember watching as a kid and I've always stuck with it, even when it's gone through some dark times. And if you're a Days fan, you know just what I mean (more on that later).

Right now I'm beginning to see a pattern on Days of Our Lives that's kind of upsetting. The show seems to be stuck in retro mode. They've been bringing back characters by the boat load. This is nothing new. All soaps do it. On All My Children, they just brought Cady McLain back -- and her character Dixie, who's supposedly dead. One Life to Live is resurrecting greatest Tina of all, Andrea Evans. So what's the big deal with what Days doing it? Nothing. It's perfectly legitimate. I support it...to a point. When it reaches a point to where new characters are not taking hold and more and more of the past is becoming the present.

Gallery: TV Squad Soap Report 3-Days
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/tv-squad-soap-report-3-days/754076/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/tv-squad-soap-report-3-days/754077/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/tv-squad-soap-report-3-days/754079/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/tv-squad-soap-report-3-days/754082/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/tv-squad-soap-report-3-days/754083/">

Continue reading TV Squad Soap Report: The retro Days of Our Lives

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Bob Barker is enjoying his retirement, thinks Carey is doing a good job

Filed under: TV Royalty, Daytime, Game Show, Reality-Free
If anyone thought Bob Barker was going to miss being on stage at The Price is Right, then they'd be wrong. At least if you listen to Bob; he not only thinks he left "at just the right time," but is keeping himself extremely busy.

Barker spoke to the Long Beach, CA Press-Telegram recently, and he explained that "I enjoyed the show right up to the last minute of the last show. The First Lady has gone from being a guest on NBC's Today show to becoming part of it.

Mrs. Bush will guest host the 9 am hour of Today next Tuesday, April 22nd (that also happens to be the day of the Pennsylvania primary). That later part of the show is usually quite a bit softer, with less political talk and more topics aimed at women. Laura Bush will also appear earlier in the broadcast with daughter Jenna to talk about their children's book, Read All About It!. And she will give Ann Curry a tour of the family's Crawford, TX ranch.

I think we can officially slide Today over to the same category as The View, rather than a news program. But many people probably did that when Meredith Vieira took Katie Couric's spot on the show. It's not as if Mrs. Bush is going to be asked who she endorses to replace her husband as president while she's co-hosting. Oh, wait. I can totally see that happening. Ed Murrow is rolling over in his grave.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Doctor Phil's ethics slide even further

Filed under: OpEd, Daytime, Talk Show, Reality-Free
First, there was the whole "appearing with Britney Spears in the hospital" hoopla, and now Doctor Phil McGraw is pimping out his services again by bailing out a jailed teen who participated in a beat-down of another teenager. Presumably this service was in exchange for the teen to appear on his television show.

According to Doctor Phil spokesperson Terri Corigliano, "We have helped guests and potential guests in the past when they need financial assistance to come on the show - assisting with clothing allowance, lost wages, accommodations, travel and necessities. In this case, certain staff members went beyond our guidelines (re: the bail being paid)."

Mind you, Doctor Phil's got other problems. It seems that his Oprah sponsorship is in jeopardy as the talk show queen seems to be prepping a replacement for him. I just wonder if this means that Doctor Phil's show is going to become less like Oprah and more like Jerry Springer.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
