Before you go jumping for joy Day Break is not returning to the ABC schedule. So, please sit down on the couch before you hurt yourself!. The good news we are talking about is that previously aired episodes, as well as three new ones, will be streaming from ABC.com very soon.
I know you're scratching your head on this one, since you already thought that Day Break was already streaming on that site. Well, not quite. They were supposed to air on the website but never showed up. The excuse reason given was that there were online music right issues that needed to be resolved. Shortly after that news the entire Day Break site was taken down, which ticked off fans even more.
Now, according to ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson, Day Break episodes will begin streaming on the network's website starting on Monday, January 29th and continue each Monday afterward until all 13 episodes are released online. The series finale is scheduled to be available on February 19th. Whether or not old episodes of the show will be pulled to make way for new ones is unknown at this time.

People have been wondering for some time now just what ABC is going to do with all those extra Day Break episodes that they paid for. All traces of the show disappeared from their website recently, leading many to believe that DVD was the only option for getting to the rest of the story.
We might not have to wait that long though. As
Joel reported yesterday
, ABC entertainment president Stephen McPherson announced that remaining episodes will be available online by the end of February. There weren't any details about how the release is going to go. I would prefer just dumping them all on the site for a marathon viewing, but at this point even one a week would be just fine. They are sticking to the 'music clearance' issue as the reason for the delay. And of course, this comes with all the foibles usually associated with TV on the internet. But hey, it's better than nothing.

2006 was a good year for television, but then all years are good years for television. Nostalgia often makes us think that things were better way back when, but I wouldn't trade my hundreds of channels of digital cable for the three networks on the rabbit ears for anything. Even the somewhat obscure channels like The-N (
South of Nowhere), GSN (
High Stakes Poker), and IFC (
Henry Rollins Show) manage to bring some good stuff to the table. Of course, things are never all rosey, but we'll get to that later. First, some of the best things about TV this past year.
NBC's handling of Studio 60 and Friday Night Lights - Many of us, myself included, are quick to jump on the networks when they dump a show just a few episodes in. So it's worth acknowledging that the network has been more than patient with these two shows. Many shows that have come before them have been blown right off the schedule for generating similar ratings.
Studio 60 kicked off their season with ratings that declined week after week and, honestly,
Friday Night Lights just never had any ratings to begin with. I really hope their patience pays off and audiences find these shows. They both deserve to see a second season.

I've been keeping an eye on the ABC episode
streaming site. Of all of the network streaming solutions, theirs is the one that I like the best. And they have made some changes, so if you haven't checked it out yet, there are some new goodies. As of now, you can watch all the episodes from the current season for
Ugly Betty, Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Brothers And Sisters, and
What About Brian. Those last two are recent additions. There are also four episodes of both
Six Degrees and
The Nine, but no word on when, or if, more are coming. Finally, the first episode of ABC Family's
Lincoln Heights is also available.

A lot of people have been asking what is to become of
Day Break now that ABC has pulled it from the air. The word was that the remaining episodes were to be shown on the network's
video site. If you were wondering why ABC hasn't made good on putting the new
Day Break episodes up yet,
TV Guide has an answer. But be warned, it's a pretty stupid one. According to an ABC rep, there are "unforeseen music clearance issues."
As John McEnroe would say, "You cannot be serious." I could understand the holdup with something like the
WKRP DVD set because of music clearance issues. When Johnny and Venus were spinning records, nobody had dreamed of what the home video market would become. But given the fact that ABC has been putting a whole mess of their shows, including
Day Break, online, how were these issues unforeseen? That's like your car breaking down because of unforeseen cars burn gas issues.
I have no idea what ABC is doing at this point. If the best they have to offer instead of
Day Break is repeats of
According to Jim and
George Lopez, what's the point? The slight gain in ratings still landed them in fourth place, and isn't worth the ill will they are garnering from viewers.

Sadly, that's the case over at ABC. Try as they might, and for reasons I don't quite get, people just don't want to watch this show. I've posted about the
slide in the ratings before, and it continued this week. After garnering their lowest 18-49 numbers yet, ABC has
pulled the show, with plans for the remaining episodes to be shown on ABC.com. Or, on DVD for those of you that are going to be screwed by that whole geography thing. To add insult to injury, the Wednesday schedule will be filled with repeats of
George Lopez and
According to Jim until the new schedule starts in January.
I think this has to signal a change at the networks. The big serial drama experiment is now officially a failure. With
Surface and
Invasion failing to get a second season, and now
Smith, Kidnapped, The Nine, Six Degrees, and
Day Break all failing to finish one, I think we can look for the networks to try something different next season. And hey, if Diggs really wants to be on a hit show, they're still casting for the next
Dancing with the Stars, right?... Too soon?

(S01E06) Unlike
24, which is another fine, fast-paced, thrilling drama,
Day Break has a good sense of humor. I am still laughing about seeing Damien, Hopper, and Damien's driver in the Skinheads' van listening to
Journey Asia's "Heat of the Moment" (
Thanks to Chris for the correction!). As if that wasn't good enough, it was great when they threw the CD out the window at Hopper after kicking him out.
I love how the show is editing sequences now, so that instead of seeing every detail, we see what is relevant. On the other hand, if we miss something (my husband ran out to get our son from swim practice) they will show you enough of what has happened that you can pick it up again pretty easily.

S01E05) I am so hooked on this show! This was the best episode yet. I was an English major, so the quality of a show's writing is a major component in how well I like a show. The writing on this show is unexpectedly good. Well, by that I mean only that I wasn't expecting it to be this good.

ABC unveiled their new Wednesday night schedule yesterday, as Anna
reported here. The big news is, of course,
Lost moving to 10PM to duck
American Idol and
Criminal Minds. Gideon wins the
Wednesday night slugfest by forfeit, I think. Crazy island adventure aside, aren't you wondering where
Day Break went?
When
Knights of Prosperity and
In Case Of Emergency kick off on January 3rd at 9PM there will still be five more episodes of Brett Hopper's bad day. Could it be that the
terrible ratings have finally caught up with the show and ABC is going to quit while they're behind? The other option is moving the show, but at this point I'm not sure the numbers will even allow them to do that.
They could stick a repeat
Grey's Anatomy in any of the slots and easily get twice the audience. Added to that, there are still episodes of
The Nine and
Six Degrees in the can that are just as, if not more, deserving of any open slot. Day Break may be destined for the internet, and a complete series DVD set.

At the beginning of the season I wrote about the battle between
Lost and Criminal Minds on Wednesday at 9. That has turned into quite the contest. As
Lost wrapped up their fall mini-season
Criminal Minds had taken the overall viewers lead, while
Lost held on to the coveted 18-49 demo crown. We've also talked about the ratings
train wreck that ABC's Wednesday night has become since the departure of
Dancing with the Stars and
Lost.
But now, things are just getting ridiculous. Any thoughts of competing with
Criminal Minds, or anything on NBC or Fox, have long since passed. This week, not only did
Day Break fall below 5 million viewers (what I am now considering the Mendoza line for the big networks), but the 1.8 rating the show got in the 18-49 demo was
tied with
One Tree Hill on the CW. Good grief, from battling over slots in the top ten to hoping that you edge out the teen drama on the CW. Ouch. That's a hell of a way to cap off your sweeps run.
It's an interesting story to follow, made all the more so by the fact that
Day Break is actually a pretty good show. I didn't expect to see it develop a
Lost like following, but why 12 or 13 million people have tuned out boggles me. It seems like ABC is committed to running the whole series, ratings be damned, but I guess we can stop speculating what a season two of
Day Break would be like.

(S01E04) Whoa, things are starting to change. The writers aren't giving us the fun, though, of keeping track of all of the little details of Hopper's day; he does change the cell phone batteries, but the falling plate is gone now, as is the woman who routinely gets hit by a bus without Hopper's intervention.
I still think we will see her again, though. She works for a judge; maybe she will provide some kind of important alibi for Hopper one of these days.

There has been much chatter about ABC's somewhat unconventional scheduling of
Lost this season. In an effort to avoid a repeat filled schedule, they have split the season into two parts, handing off the time slot to
Day Break for three months in the middle. While they will tell you it was because of outcry from the fans, the cynic in me thinks that the fact that
Lost doesn't repeat well had something to do with it.
Either way, it's not working. Rather, it's
really not working.
Day Break premiered with a somewhat disappointing 11 million viewers, despite having the
Dancing with the Stars finale drop 27 million sets of eyeballs on their doorstep. But 11 million sounds just grand compared to this week. With the dancing shoes stowed away for the foreseeable future, Captain Kirk's
Show Me The Money is delivering just under 8 million viewers as the lead in. And Wednesday,
Day Break only managed to hang on to 5.12 million of them. 5 million? The worst repeat of
Lost would never approach 5 million viewers.

S01E03) Well, the good news is that Hopper is healing. The bad news is that his life still sucks. Last week, I had to agree with commenter Mrs. Eldubya, who said basically that the show wasn't as good as she had expected, but it was still worth tuning in for. Well, this week? The show got
better.
This show hinges on the details-- and boy, do they get that right. Hopper is talking to his partner, Andrea, and she says, "How do you know I won't just take this into them?" (The Internal Affairs people who have offered her a deal if she brings in Hopper-- this being the hourglass that was in the package). The scene briefly shifts to her taking a bullet in a previous incarnation of the day in which she took a bullet for him so he could get away.
