Just take a look at the Emmy nominations for Best Drama this year and you see that three of the six nominated are from cable: Mad Men, Damages, and Dexter). And the three that are from the networks are shows that have been a while and are (arguably) on the back nine when it comes to their life: Boston Legal, Lost, and House. While the network shows obviously get more viewers than cable, cable (and online) is the place to go for more creative content and buzz.

Wired's Epicenter blog has a piece about how the more free world of cable television is hurting network TV.

Continue reading Network viewership dropping? Did it leave you laughing and dying to know what happens next -- or is this the end?

The answer is now known. There's more Curb Your Enthusiasm on deck, because Larry David has said yes to another HBO season.

HBO announced a seventh season of Curb. It will begin airing in early 2009, giving Larry plenty of time to write the 10 episodes planned. HBO's West Coast prez Michael Lombardo characterized Larry as "excited about it" when he presented at TCA.

That characterization is in line with comments by both Richard Lewis and Jeff Garlin, semi-regular and regular, respectively, in previous months.

And Susie Essman told the New York Post that she had auctioned off a walk-on role in season seven, so it would have been very embarrassing if she didn't know that they were all coming back.
Continue reading Larry David set for more Curb Your Enthusiasm

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Characters I'm missing right now

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Curb Your Enthusiasm, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, TV Squad Lists, Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, Reality-Free
The writers' strike forced some of my favorite shows into an unexpected, summer-long hiatus and delayed the return of others. I'm grateful that shows like Lost still have new episodes, but the second half of this TV season hasn't felt the same. I especially miss the promising new series that were cut short.

It feels like other shows have been on hiatus forever. Flight of the Conchords was supposed to return this year, but had its premiere pushed back until 2009. I miss Bret, Jemaine, and their strange circle of friends. I've been wondering about the fates of several absent characters lately. So many storylines were left unresolved.

Here's a short list of some of the faces I can't wait to see again:
Continue reading Characters I'm missing right now

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Seinfeld ready for a new sitcom? Well, maybe there was more going on with Jerry and the Peacock people than just honey-related promos. PageSix.com is reporting today that Jerry Seinfeld is in talks with NBC for a new series.

You have to assume that if there's truth to this, the network is probably bending over backwards to secure a new Seinfeld. Heck, if Jerry wanted to do a series about a forensic scientist who also does comedy on the side, they'd greenlight that, too!
Wow. That was all over the place and I loved every second of it. It might actually be the best season finale this show has had yet. Better than the incest survivors group. Better than the happy ending massage. Better than the restaurant that Larry helped open. Better than The Producers. Better than Larry dying and then snapping out of it. Why's that? Because for the entire 40 minute episode, there was only one question on your mind: Did he really stick a gerbil up his ass?

Continue reading Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Bat Mitzvah (season finale)

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Therapist

Filed under: OpEd, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Episode Reviews

(S06E09) "New Larry is keeping the minty breath." - Larry

That was definitely not what I expected from this episode. I was really hoping that Larry and Cheryl would get back together almost immediately and then we were going to get to see Larry "forcing" himself to change in order to please Cheryl. In a way, we sort of did. I loved how whenever he was with Cheryl he was all dressed up. When he wasn't, his usual attire of sneakers and a ratty sweater came back into play. And obviously, his tone and decision making were drastically out of character whenever he was with Cheryl. But the thing I love most about Larry is that as mischievous and conniving as he is -- he's still trying to win back Cheryl because he loves and misses her. I think it's hilarious that the idea of being honest and open with her never enters his mind. Everything has to be a grand gesture backed by an equally self-centered and idiotic plan.

Continue reading Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Therapist

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The N Word

Filed under: OpEd, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Episode Reviews

(S06E08) "My penis is an animal." - Larry

I'm really glad I don't have the same issue that Larry does. This whole five second rule is a crazy thing. These days, the handshake has slowly become obsolete as most people now seem to favor some sort of handshake/hug hybrid for a greeting. Picture Larry at a family reunion! He said he had no control! While the estrogen pills were obviously a mistake on the pharmacist's part, maybe Larry should keep them around if he knows he'll be heading into a hug imminent situation. This was definitely one of the better episodes this season -- doesn't top last week's though. However, this one would have been better if it hadn't felt like I was watching Desperate Housewives with my eyes closed.

Continue reading Curb Your Enthusiasm: The N Word

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The TiVo Guy

Filed under: OpEd, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Episode Reviews

(S06E07) "I'm leaving." - Cheryl

Wow. I don't want to say that was the best episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm ever... but it might have been. I don't recall ever feeling so conflicted, angry, confused, and giddy all at the same time while watching this show but now I know what it's like. The whole season has really been building up to this. Hell, the whole series has. We'd always wondered what it would take for Cheryl to finally call it quits. Now we know. Poor airplane phone reception.

Continue reading Curb Your Enthusiasm: The TiVo Guy

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Rat Dog

Filed under: OpEd, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Episode Reviews

<img alt="Shelley Berman and Vivica A.
(S06E06) "I can't pause toast!" - Leon

Best episode of the season thus far. Hands down. Plus, and I know people have been harping on me in the comments for constantly bringing this up, but Larry finally dropped the morbid themes. I'm not saying previous episodes this season have been bad because of their tone, but when they're similar to this one it's better. Larry's trademark jovial obscene and sexual humor always makes for the best episodes and this one was chock full of it.

Continue reading Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Rat Dog

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

NBC might show reruns of UK Office and Curb Your Enthusiasm

Filed under: Industry, Programming, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office

No, this isn't some programming move to get rid of reality shows (though I think it's worth exploring). It's actually a strategy in case there's a strike in Hollywood.

And that strike is looking more and more like it might become a reality. It sounds like hyperbole, I know, but the two sides are really far apart, and we're closer to a strike than we've ever been. Writers want more money for DVD sales and other forms of media. At one point they were going to work under their old deal until the end of this season, but now things have changed. The networks have been stockpiling on scripts and orders for reality shows just in case.

Continue reading NBC might show reruns of UK Office and Curb Your Enthusiasm

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Freak Book

Filed under: OpEd, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Episode Reviews

(S06E05) "Happy birthday... Becker!" - Charlie, the limo driver

The trend continues! That's two weeks in a row with a solid episode and the grotesque and morbid themes have carried on as well. Last week it was Larry's bowel movements and this week it's Larry's new favorite book (Mondo Freaks) and cemetery plots.
(S06E04) "She has bowel concern for you and I do too!" - Richard Lewis

For a show where the main character does nothing but sh*t on people, or in turn only gets sh*t on, I suppose it only makes sense that there would be an episode devoted entirely to... well, sh*t. Notice how this episode played out though. Rather than a few random stories that only sort of intertwined (like we've seen this season), everything in this episode stemmed from one action: Larry got Cha-Cha (Richard Lewis' girlfriend) a receptionist job at the office down the hall from his. How could poor old Larry have possibly realized that it would lead to some temporary deafness and pain in his right ear?

Continue reading Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Lefty Call

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Ida Funkhouser Roadside Memorial

Filed under: OpEd, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Episode Reviews

(S06E03) "You can't ask a mourner for fifty dollars." - Larry

I think I'm starting to agree with what a lot of people have been noticing already. This season feels a lot darker, even for Larry's twisted sense of reality. He's much more of a jerk. Much worse than I ever recall. The bad thing about it is that the people who have traditionally always been by his side (Cheryl and Jeff) are starting to seem fed up now as well. I'm fairly certain that Larry won't be as enjoyable to watch if he has no one to complain to.

Continue reading Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Ida Funkhouser Roadside Memorial

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Anonymous Donor

Filed under: OpEd, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Episode Reviews

(S06E02) "Whatchu talkin' 'bout L.D.?" - Loretta

I tell you what. For someone that we know to be just about the most offensive and insulting person on TV, Larry David has quite the rapport with the Los Angeles black community. From Krazee-Eyez Killa to Leon, black people love Larry David. Even when he's dressed in a bed sheet, looking partially like a Klan member, black people love Larry David. My point? However, I think that since it's been gone for two years I had built this premiere up in my head way too much. So it fell a little flat for me. Did I laugh hysterically? You bet. Did I feel uncomfortable more than once? Check. Did I inadvertantly compare it to every other great episode? Yeah... and there lies the problem with Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Despite the misleading title to Curb Your Enthusiasm's fifth season finale ("The End") the show is far from over. Larry, Cheryl, Jeff, and the rest of TV's most inappropriate clan return to HBO one week after the season four finale of Entourage. On tap for this season? Cheryl convinces Larry that they should adopt an African-American family that's been displaced by a hurricane, Larry envies the anonymity of Ted Danson (I wonder if Damages will be mentioned), and Susie says the "F" word... a lot. Lord knows what else they have in store to make us viewers feel violated simply by watching. Guest stars will include Danson, his wife Mary Steenburgen, Curb regular Richard Lewis, and Vivica A. Fox. Season six premieres on Sunday, September 9 at 10PM on HBO with the episode "Meet the Blacks."

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Hold the onion rings: James Gandolfini speaks - TCA Report

Filed under: Nip/Tuck, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Interviews, The Sopranos, TCA Press Tour

Will Nip/Tuck have a season six? Why is James Gandolfini going back to HBO and will Larry David end Curb Your Enthusiasm?

These tidbits -- and a tons of swag -- came out at today's TCA press sessions at the Beverly Hilton hotel. I had to remind myself that today was a cable day because the roster of talent read like a major network.

Jason Priestly (Beverly Hills 90210) led the cast of Side Order of Life, a Lifetime series in which star Marisa Coughlan has second thoughts about marrying Priestly. But, hey, if Big dumped Natasha on Sex in the City then I suppose anything's possible.

TCA -- aka the TV Critics' press tour -- is a convention for journalists where the major networks and cable outlets unveil their fall programs to the press for review. The tour, which is held at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, began on Monday (with PBS) and runs until July 26th with ABC.

About 200 plus members of the press from across the country are inundated with reality, comedy, drama and other types of programs. Interview opportunities are non-stop. We're fed constantly and given tons of free gifts -- trinkets, pens, paperweights, DVDs and press materials.

I remember when I did a scene with him on Curb Your Enthusiasm, my friend Jeff Garlin showed up on the set early to warn me about Larry and not take anything personally. I was glad he did. While Larry wasn't the worst person I had ever worked with, he certainly wasn't pleasant. However, once the series aired, it was clear that he knew what he was doing.

Continue reading Larry David and wife Laurie decide to split up

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Top 15 best (intentional) uses of profanity on TV - VIDEO

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, South Park, The Wire, 30 Rock, TV Squad Lists
George Carlin's "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" routine famously landed him in jail. He was charged for obscenity in 1972 after performing the bit at Milwaukee's Summerfest. When it was broadcast the following year on a New York City radio station, the FCC got in on the act. The radio station challenged the fine, and the case went all the way to the Supreme Court.

Now, I intend on using every one of Carlin's "dirty words" after the jump so consider yourself warned. Be prepared to wash your computer's mouth out with soap. It may look like a saint, but it swears like sailor.
Continue reading Top 15 best (intentional) uses of profanity on TV - VIDEO

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
