This may be the melatonin you need.

CollegeHumor has uncovered the true reason FOX nixed the action drama from its airwaves. It needed more room for more Seth MacFarlane cartoons about pop-culture spewing families with anthropomorphic pets and American Idol. I never thought I'd long for the good ol' days was Fox was known for quality programming like Bad Orderlies Caught on Tape 2 and When Lawn Equipment Goes Screwy 4.
Dear Jay,

Let me start by stating that I think you are a very funny man. I have been following your career for years and you're great. You were wonderful in Jerry Maguire. Of course, you were speaking lines written by Cameron Crowe, so that was a plus, but you delivered the performance. Bravo, Jay Mohr.

That said, I have to talk to you now about Gary Unmarried. Jay, you can make this so much better. Really, you are capable of so much more. Yes, you don't have Cameron Crowe writing for you now. I'm fully aware of that. But you're there.

Gary Unmarried may have started as a formula, and it still has too much of that formula intact. The bitchy, controlling wife/ex-wife? Haven't we seen the Allison character on Two and a Half Men (Judith), Everybody Loves Raymond (Deborah), The King of Queens (Carrie)? Do you see the pattern here? I do.
Continue reading An open letter to Jay Mohr about Gary Unmarried

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The New Adventures of Old Christine - Nuts

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
(S05E07) I guess the fate of Marion Ross was handled off-screen, because Matthew and Richard are settling into her old digs, and she was nowhere to be seen this episode. Now that I think about it, though, she could be shacking up in Matthew's old digs out in the backyard. It would make for a pretty funny callback to have her character pop back up. Maybe even act as if Christine didn't even know she'd moved in back there.

I wasn't as impressed with the forced obligatory "we're different but now we're roommates" storyline for Matthew and Richard. Hopefully, now that it's out of the way, the writers have some ideas of some fun things they can do with the mismatched pair. In five seasons, we've not seen a great deal of interaction between them, but their differences could make for some good comedy.
Continue reading Review: The New Adventures of Old Christine - Nuts

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Hank yanked by ABC

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Industry, Programming, Cancellations, Reality-Free
First off, thanks to ABC for canceling Hank, because I love it when headlines rhyme.

Second, yes, the network has canceled the struggling Kelsey Grammer comedy. It never really clicked with TV viewers or critics, and when ABC gave full season orders to all of the other Wednesday night comedies (The Middle, Modern Family, and Cougar Town) you knew the writing was on the wall and this show just wasn't going to be around for a second season. Of course, it's not going to be around for a full first season either. ABC is replacing the remaining episodes with holiday specials and repeats of their other sitcoms.

This might be a silly question to ask but ... is anyone out there going to miss this show? I have a high tolerance for sitcoms, even mediocre ones. But this show was mediocre, with a capital ocore. It just wasn't funny and the characters/premise just weren't interesting enough.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

What You Missed Last Night: Colbert "defends" Barney Frank

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Late Night, Video, Watercooler Talk, Reality-Free
Yesterday we showed you a clip of Wolf Blitzer and Lou Dobbs talking about the 2007 arrest of Barney Frank's partner for growing pot plants at their home in Maine. Last night Stephen Colbert defended Frank. Well, sort of.

I know I've wondered why the Peabody-award winning, Emmy-winning, universally hailed, feel-good show was getting the fuzzy end of the lollipop. Instead of a big, splashy Season 4 premiere, Ugly Betty was sort plunked onto the schedule on Friday night at 9 p.m. in mid-October. There was little fanfare and the ratings were underwhelming.

Well, things might be changing for the better for Betty -- like her gradual on screen makeover. With the cancellation of Eastwick, ABC has confirmed to AfterElton.com that Ugly Betty will move to Wednesday at 10 p.m. It won't happen right away, but if ABC is smart, the sooner they can shift Eastwick out of that slot and hand it over the Betty, the better.
Continue reading Things are looking up for Ugly Betty... perhaps

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Roddenberry on list of TV Hall of Fame inductees

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Comedy Shows, Industry, Music and Variety, Game Show, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Awards, Reality-Free, Star Trek: Original Series
This might sound more overdue than According to Jim's cancellation, but one of TV's greatest creators is getting the Hall of Fame treatment.

But I've been hearing about it for days, because my 15-year-old son is a huge fan of Family Guy.

I'm not sure what chip I'm missing that I don't find Family Guy as fascinating and hilariously funny as some. Reading some of the Twitter updates after a show airs, it's clear that some folks think it's the funniest thing they've ever seen. Then again, my son usually regales me with all the cool stuff he sees in TV shows, but didn't mention much about the Live Variety Show, so maybe it wasn't that great.

Jason had this to say about it: "Really, it was about the least funny or entertaining variety show I've ever seen. Going into this, I was going to suggest that maybe FOX should have skipped the second Family Guy and given them an hour for this thing, but now I'm going to say they should have skipped the variety show altogether." Here it is, from our sister site, SlashControl. Tell us what you think in the comments below.
It's a weekly thing I do with my spouse, a chance to get away from the computer screen and just relax for a while. Normally, I relish this time because -- for the most part -- I love 75% of the shows from eight o'clock till CSI: Miami. (I usually empty the dishwasher during Accidentally on Purpose, sort of half-watching it because, as I've said before, it's just not working for me.)

Well, it seemed like last night's CBS comedies went off the rails. They strained to be funny, in all the wrong ways. Here are my thoughts, show by show -- including Accidentally (which I did watch):
Continue reading Monday's CBS sitcoms went off the rails last night

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

TV Squad Ten: Cartoon women who should have Playboy centerfolds

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Animation, Commercials, Children, TV Squad Lists, Reality-Free, TV Squad Ten
Marge Simpson's spread in Playboy was a groundbreaking moment for cartoon women everywhere. Her sensual skin pics paved new ground for the "feminine-animated."

She told the world that the women of animation aren't just vehicles for humor or straight characters to set up punchlines for the males on the paper. She helped us realize they have thoughts, feelings, emotions and yes, even urges that make them unique, infinitely interesting and utterly fascinating. They are, as Dr. Frasier Crane so eloquently put it, "like a fine wine: always intoxicated, ever surprising and only getting better with age."

And so, for the cause of gender equality and female empowerment, here are the ten cartoon chicks who should pose naked because it would be righteously awesome.
Continue reading TV Squad Ten: Cartoon women who should have Playboy centerfolds

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Xavier Renegade Angel Seasons 1 and 2

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Adult Swim, Reality-Free
On an Adult Swim schedule where every show is strange in some way, Xavier may be the strangest of the bunch. The title character is a hairy birdman with a beak and legs with knees that bend the wrong way. And a snake hand. And a loincloth. And two different colored eyes. And six nipples (I could go on, but...) He talks like a surfer dude, mashing up new age double talk with double entendre, inhabiting a sort of alternate, SIMS-like earth and killing or damaging irreparably all he seeks to help.

The effect of this only intensifies when you watch a lot of episodes of Xavier in one sitting, which is what you can do with the new Xavier: Renegade Angel Seasons 1 and 2 DVD. In its usual dose of fifteen minutes per episode, it's odd. Watch it for two hours, you start to see spots. Even the animation, which stresses the bright colors and blocky movement of computer generated graphics, pushes you off kilter. It's an overused description to say something looks like a cartoon on acid, but if ever a show actually deserved the description, it's Xavier.
Continue reading Review: Xavier Renegade Angel Seasons 1 and 2

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Californication - So Here's The Thing...

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S03E07) "L.A. has made us soft. You used to be able to run for Lexington Avenue with the best of them. Elbowing the investment wankers out of the way. Your cell phone in one hand, mammoth ball sack in the other hand, Hollywood Reporter between your teeth. Not even breathing so you wouldn't inhale the $&*$ing piss stench." - Hank to Charlie

So now that the No. 1 Missus wants the family back, with Hank included, he's got to get the rest of his conquests out of his system. In the real world, such a thing would be easy to do. Call each one of them up, tell them it's been fun but we've all got to settle down eventually and this is that time. Hang up the phone and never leave your home or greet another human being in person until the big settle down day.

But this is television. Nothing is ever that simple, especially for a cat like Hank Moody, a man who sees simple as a wussy excuse to go through life.
Continue reading Review: Californication - So Here's The Thing...

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Two and a Half Men - Untainted by Filth

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S07E07) Charlie Harper engaged has been a pretty big pill to swallow, but the way Two and a Half Men has handled it up to now is to make the engagement open-ended. Like a TV series with no end date. Charlie has adjusted to life as a man with a "ball and chain" as Alan put it. He's been quite good ... for Charlie.

But when the screws are put to our man Charlie, when the future gets a date, well, that's just a bit too much reality for a wild thing like him to handle. That's the set up. For what happened, keep reading after the jump.
Continue reading Review: Two and a Half Men - Untainted by Filth

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Super-Sized Sundays with Seth: And a variety show makes ... five?

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Animation, Episode Reviews
FOX pushed the boundaries of their Seth MacFarlane-filled Sundays about as far as they could. It wasn't enough to have three animated series already in the lineup, but they had to give him his own "variety show" as well. They bumped The Simpsons to make room for a two-hour block of Seth madness!

But that's not all! If you watch new episodes of American Dad, Family Guy, The Cleveland Show AND the all-new Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show, we'll throw in a bonus episode of Family Guy absolutely free! The real question is... was America really ready for that much Seth?

I thought I was.
Continue reading Super-Sized Sundays with Seth: And a variety show makes ... five?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Did Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show go too far?

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Video, Watercooler Talk, Celebrities, Reality-Free
Last night FOX aired Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show, and they're getting a little heat about it today. They re-enacted a scene from a Family Guy episode that made fun of deaf actress Marlee Matlin. Then they took it a step further and had Alex Borstein imitate Matlin singing a pop song. No worries though, since Matlin was there to defend herself.
Me? I thought it was funny.

(S04E04) It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come fast and furious, in a town called Malice. Yeah. I totally just made that up. Right now. Free words of wisdom, from me to you.

This episode wasn't spectacular for the purposes of laughing-out-loud. It was funny in a few moments, yes, but I spent most of the twenty-some minutes resting my chin on my fist, brow furrowed with concern. All the characters are going through some heavy stuff right now, and that inner turmoil, dealing with loss and identity and love, came bubbling to the surface in this episode. Doing so, again, isn't much of a gut-buster, but it makes for beautiful character development. Can you tell I have faith in this show? Maybe a little too much.
Continue reading Review: The Venture Bros. - Return to Malice

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Paul Mooney's TV history from Black Is the New White

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Celebrities, Reality-Free
Paul Mooney is well known to stand-up comedians for his own work and for writing for his longtime friend, Richard Pryor. Outside of that, though, his name recognition gets a little fuzzier. So for TV comedy fans, Mooney's new memoir, Black Is the New White, provides some great behind-the-scenes moments they should probably know.

There are a lot of heartfelt stories about Richard Pryor and Mooney's own personal life, but there is a lot of fun TV trivia, as well. Mooney talks about getting forced onstage by a couple of friends to do his first solo stand-up spot in the early 60s in San Francisco. Mooney is drunk and nervous, and winds up doing the act of a comic named Ronnie Schell, who would later co-star with Jim Nabors on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Mooney admits whenever he catches the show in reruns, he feels a little guilty.
Continue reading Paul Mooney's TV history from Black Is the New White

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Bored to Death - Take a Dive (season finale)

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S01E08) "You think we learned anything tonight?" - Jonathan

I'll tell you what I learned -- Bored to Death has a lot of potential. All season long, I've gone from loving to hating to loving this show, and with the season finale now come and gone, there's a real opportunity here for Bored to Death to become HBO's next break-out hit when it returns. All the pieces are in place and it probably could have blown up this season had there not been so many episodes where the show tried to find its footing. Is it a detective show? Or is it about three friends in the publishing world trying to make their mark? Or is it both?
Continue reading Review: Bored to Death - Take a Dive (season finale)

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Comedy Central wants a bite of The Onion

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Sports, News, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free
Part of me is surprised that this deal took this long to happen. But when you watch the recent crop of new shows on the Chortle Network (with the exception of Tosh.0), it really shouldn't surprise anyone.

Comedy Central has ordered a half-hour scripted pilot based on the Onion's Sports Network. The OSN is part of the popular satirical magazine's online TV news network that launched a little under a year ago.

This isn't the first time the network has tried to do a satirical sports show. Comedy Central also shot a pilot for a Daily Show-esque sports show called Sports Central that died in the pilot stage. This incarnation sounds much more promising since it will spoof not only sports figures and stories, but also the tone and style of sports media. Sweet sassy molassey, this is gonna rock!

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Middle - The Front Door

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S01E06) Something big is going to happen with Axl, and I can't wait for it. Yes, he's doing the same bored, sleeping, lazy teenager act that we've seen a million times before, but I like the way he works off of both Neil Flynn and Patricia Heaton. And I think there's real potential for him to break out into something unique; like when he put his clothes on for the bus in two seconds.

The writers have already crafted both Brick and Sue into wholly unique, and bizarre, children. By comparison the only thing odd about Axl so far is his name. He's just so ... ordinary! Ordinary was enough, though, for him to be part of a pretty funny storyline that pitted him at odds with his father.

It also makes me terrified of the upcoming teen years. Maybe I'll just ship mine out to some other family to deal with. Maybe he can move to Orson, Indiana and I'll just let Mike and Frankie take care of him. Better send him with an extra coat. You never know when a door might go missing.
Continue reading Review: The Middle - The Front Door

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
