Let's just say that it truly is the happiest place on Earth.
Obstacle course, that is.

Check out this trailer for what appears to not only be a revival of the 'Slumdog Millionaire' franchise, but also a classic children's TV favorite for the big screen. I double dare you to watch it or take the physical challenge.
I'm a bit of a Machead and I REALLY want an iPad. That's why I'm super jealous of Pee-Wee Herman who brought one to the Playhouse in this "Funny or Die" video, even though he already has a robot and a talking screen, both of which Apple are probably developing into overpriced electronic gadgetry so they can suck more money out of my cramped, ink stained hands.

And just for fun, when you hear the word "iPad" in the following video, scream real loud. Ready? Let's try it!

But that still didn't stop the folks from Celebuzz from compiling a "Where Are They Now?" list of the Nickelodeon summer camp comedy's principle cast from bad Bobby Budnick all the way to Z.Z. Ziff.

The tales of the cast post kiddie-cable stardom range from the barely out of work to busier than you or I will ever be. I won't spoil anything for you, but let's just say that Ug became the most successful person to ever come out of Camp Anawanna.
Case in point: Gallagher, O.J. Simpson and Kanye West have yet to appear on an episode of Sesame Street.

Well, would you want West teaching your kids the difference between "near" and "far," things that are yellow and why George Bush hates black people?

Some upcoming episodes of the long running PBS kids' show will include appearances by Christina Applegate on Jan. 25, Hugh Jackman on Jan. 27, Debi Mazar and Sarah Jessica Parker on Feb. 16 and Paul Rudd and Eva Longoria-Parker on Feb. 18.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Pee-wee Herman's comeback show is fun and nostalgic - TCA Report

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Daytime, Children, TCA Press Tour, Reality-Free
Saturday night, I decided to get away from the hotel and join a small group of critics on a field trip to Club Nokia in downtown LA to see Paul Ruebens' new stage production of The Pee-wee Herman Show.

It was a heck of a lot of fun, which is saying a lot because I've never been a huge fan of Pee-wee or his classic CBS Saturday-morning show Pee-wee's Playhouse. But most of the people who were there were die-hard fans, many of whom either caught Pee-wee's original stage show in the mid '80s, grew up watching his movies or Playhouse, or likely spent their Saturday mornings in college working on their first weekend high while watching his show.

For fans, it was pure comfort food. The stage was set up exactly like the set of Playhouse, complete with his complement of talking household items: Chairry, Magic Screen, Clocky, Pterri, Fish, etc. Jambi was also there to grant Pee-wee his wishes.
Continue reading Pee-wee Herman's comeback show is fun and nostalgic - TCA Report

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Kevin Conroy wins the top spot in Wired's Best Batmen list

In the never ending, epic battle between TV and movies, Wired helped score another death blow for TV.

The magazine's Underwire blog named their picks for the greatest man to ever don the ab-flattering Batman costume and the man who provided the voice for the title character of the awesome 90's animated version won the top spot.

Voice actor Kevin Conroy has not only voiced Batman and Bruce Wayne for Batman: The Animated Series, but also for six animated movies, three other animated series and three video games including the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham Asylum. Anyone who is familiar with the dark, gravely voice that brought more depth and range to the character than anyone other should not be surprised that his performances have topped the list.
I'm sure it's making George Clooney grow greener with envy by the minute.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

DC's Justice Society gets animated

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Animation, Children, Reality-Free
Smallville's Clark Kent isn't the only one getting a visit from DC Comics' Justice Society in 2010. An animated version of the 1940s superhero team will make its debut January 15 on Cartoon Network's great and goofy Batman show. We'll get to see how The Flash (the original one with the silly hat), Hourman, Hawkman, Dr. Mid-Nite and Wildcat influenced Batman's bad guy-beating skills. We'll also see them in action against a villain named Per Degaton. The ep, titled "The Golden Age of Justice," will also feature Bats teaming up with Green Arrow's main squeeze, Black Canary.
Continue reading DC's Justice Society gets animated

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

And now, here's video of a Muppet dying

I know that The Muppet Show was for adults as much as kids, but this clip from the show is still rather odd. Every year during the holidays, we all enjoy different Christmas movies and evergreen TV specials. One that they don't run often any more but I remember with great fondness is Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol. Fortunately, it's now available on DVD, and if you think you've seen the best of Charles Dickens' Ebenezer Scrooge but haven't seen this one, I urge you to reserve judgment till you do. Don't laugh! I'm absolutely serious. Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol is a fantastic version of Dickens' short story.

Sure, sure, the animation is nothing to write home about. But the script and those songs are! It was 1962. NBC aired the one-hour cartoon special on December 18. It wasn't just any cartoon either. The idea was that Mr. Magoo was cast in a stage production of A Christmas Carol, so the entire enterprise had a theater angle.
Continue reading A holiday tradition: Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

TV franchises offer up last minute Christmas gift ideas

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Animation, Festivus, Children, Reality-Free
NORAD is already tracking Santa Claus and his airborne reindeer team as it heads south from the North Pole and ignores boring Canada to give delightful Christmas presents to all the good American boys and girls. Fortunately, the U.S. Air Force apologized for that anti-aircraft missile that almost nicked Dasher. They sent a fruit basket and everything.

The point is that you don't have much time to snag holiday toys for your TV fan friends and those few kids you actually like. Fortunately, there still some popular toys out there that can serve multiple gift giving purposes.

The I Love Lucy Barbie from Mattel (right) sells for $45, so it might be more appropriate for an adult toy collector (an adult who collects TV-related toys, I mean). But, a Barbie is a Barbie, and few girls would turn one down -- even if it features Lucy Ricardo auditioning for a part in Ricky's show at the Copa.
Continue reading TV franchises offer up last minute Christmas gift ideas

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

G.I.
Pee Wee told the press he has a script for a movie (AHHHHHHHH!) based on his popular Saturday morning kids' show Pee Wee's Playhouse. He said the movie (AHHHHHHH!) would bring back all of the show's original characters and take them out of the playhouse and into the broader, fictional world of "Puppetland." It's also described as a family-friendly movie (AHHHHHHH!), although judging from the reaction my old man had to the show when I watched it as a kid, "family-friendly" might be a loose term for this movie (AHHHHHHH!).

A Pee Wee's Playhouse film has always been lurking around in development hell. An earlier version with Johnny Depp as the title character was being shopped around way back in 2007. If Pee-Wee's Playhouse became a mo.., er, feature film, would you watch it?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Yes, Virginia - there are iCarly video games for Christmas

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Children, Reality-Free
It never fails to amaze me that there very popular kid's shows out there -- complete with extensive merchandising -- that I've never heard of (though I write about entertainment for a living). Nickelodeon's iCarly is one of those shows.

I wouldn't know an episode of iCarly if one sideswiped me in LA traffic, but no one at the network nor anyone associated with the show could give a chimp since the series comes packed with an extensive following, cross-media popularity for star Miranda Cosgrove, Emmy nominations and a wide variety of product tie-ins -- including two new video games from Activision.
In a world full of games inviting me to kill zombies, take on Nazi Panzer divisions and out-scheme NFL masterminds, I couldn't imagine where to begin a game about a plucky early teen who creates a web series with her perky friends. But Activision's game designers came up with successful new titles for the Wii and Nintendo DS.
Continue reading Yes, Virginia - there are iCarly video games for Christmas

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Pee Wee Herman Show returning to the stage; is TV next?

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Celebrities, Children, Reality-Free
Pee Wee Herman is returning to the national consciousness with the stage show that made him famous, but could "TV" be the word of the day?

The Pee Wee Herman Show is kicking off with a huge, sold-out stage show, a new version of the original stage show that served as a launching pad for the Saturday morning TV (AHHHHHH!) show, Pee Wee's Playhouse. The show starts a run on Jan. 17, 2010 at Los Angeles' Club Nokia. The producers had to move the show to a bigger club so they could accommodate the large number of ticket holders who stormed the box office when seats went on sale.

Given the buzz and heavy interest in this new stage show and the character's return from the depths of popular culture, could a TV (AHHHHHHH!) version -- either for kids or adults -- be far behind?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Nickelodeon unwraps schedule of holiday presents

The Nickelodeon family of networks is recruiting all of its top stars to fill its holiday line-up.

You might need to take a break here, as this is a pretty extensive list of specials and such -- all featuring Spongebob Squarepants and his fellow animated megastars. For all listings, make sure to check local listings for times, etc.

Starting off, on Saturday, Dec. 12, the network's "Naughty or Nice Night" will feature new holiday episodes of True Jackson, VP and The Troop.

Nickelodeon will also show repeats of holiday-themed episodes of hit SpongeBob SquarePants, iCarly and The Fairly OddParents, starting this week -- with a marathon on Christmas Day, Dec. 25. The network will also serve up "Miranda Madness" from Dec. 14 through Dec. 24, from 4 - 8 PM, featuring themed marathons of iCarly and Drake & Josh.
Continue reading Nickelodeon unwraps schedule of holiday presents

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Gruffalo stars as centerpiece of BBC's Christmas

Filed under: Animation, Children, Reality-Free, British TV
When Christmas time rolls around, you can enjoy visits from Santa Claus, St. Nick, the Ghost of Christmas Past and, if you're watching the BBC, the Gruffalo.

The popular children's book is now an animated special for the BBC (soon to visit the U.S.) and is now the centerpiece of the network's holiday season.

Written by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler and published in 1999, The Gruffalo is a 700-word story that's been translated into multiple languages and adapted into a stage play. It tells the story of a mouse outwitting several deadly animals as he walks through the forest until he meets the title beast.
Continue reading Gruffalo stars as centerpiece of BBC's Christmas

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

You can't go wrong with TV's SpongeBob gifts for kids

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Animation, Children, Reality-Free
"Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Popularly licensed and profitable is he!"

That's not how the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song goes, but the statement is factually correct. The Nickelodeon yellow legend is still immensely popular across various age ranges. And that gives you some easy gift ideas for kids in and around your family.

Rather than merely give the kid in question a stuffed sponge for the holidays, you can dig a little deeper and offer up a couple Spongebob board games from Hasbro for less than $25 each.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Edition of "Kid Cranium" mixes up artistic activities with a trivia-based board game to let kids express themselves while they kick your grown-up butt.
Continue reading You can't go wrong with TV's SpongeBob gifts for kids

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

First "Spill" O'Reilly, then ... who?

There are a few definitive signs that you have become an icon in television news: getting a blog dedicated solely to your ties, winning an "Auto-Tune the News" award, and bringing the world the hilarious tale of an exploding whale.

Last week, Fox News' "No Spin" pundit Bill O'Reilly was cemented into fame when Sesame Street unveiled their "Spill O'Reilly," the newest talking head on the "Grouch News Network" that includes such greats as Walter Cranky, Dan Rather-not and Sally Messy Yuckayel.

This got me thinking...

Sherrie Westin, executive vice president of the Sesame Workshop, appeared on The O'Reilly Factor to explain the "Pox News" joke and unveil a new character that pays homage to "Papa Bear" as part of the show's long-standing Grouch journalism homages. Just so there's no confusion, the new Sesame Street character is the guy in the suit on the left, not the right, I think.
