Audiences hope to remember Michael Jackson for Thriller and not everything he's done since.If anyone in the press should ever ask you, "What were you doing when you heard the great Michael Jackson was dead?", be sure to answer with: "Reading one of your stories on what a lowlife you thought he was just prior to his death."

There are times when I'm ashamed to be a part of the media. The 48 hours after Michael Jackson's death was just such an epoch. I chose that last word carefully because the endless, maudlin, self-congratulatory coverage the major news networks wallowed in following Jackson's death was as long-winded as it was embarrassingly dramatic.

While that coverage is sure to continue throughout the memorial services, unavoidable custody and estate battles and forthcoming autopsy reports, none of that will compare in sickly sweet sensation to what CNN, Fox News and the others lowered themselves to just following the singer's death.

simpsons, michael jackson, stark raving dad, fox"Stark Raving Dad," the season three opener of The Simpsons, is a hilarious and heartwarming half-hour. It reminds me of the show's best days when it delivered that perfect blend of bizarre humor, social commentary and unexpected sweetness. I'll be one of the millions tuning in this Sunday when Fox re-airs the ep as a tribute to uncredited guest star Michael Jackson.

Like Joel reminded us last week, the King of Pop provided the voice for Leon Kompowsky, a large and loveable brick layer who says he is Michael Jackson. In the episode, Homer is charmed by Leon and brings him home from a mental institution, where the rest of the family eventually falls in love with him. The sweetest moment comes at the end when Leon and Bart perform a birthday song for Lisa.

Billy MaysFirst off, everyone keeps using the word "infomercial" when describing the ads that Billy Mays did, including this piece at TampaBay.com. Actually, infomercials are longer form ads, usually 30 minutes. What Mays did were commercials (though yes, he did infomercials too). After a meeting between his widow, his son, friend Anthony Sullivan, and marketers, they have decided to resume running all of Mays' ads next week. I'm sure that's going to seem weird to some viewers.

I guess it's not completely odd, because we still watch a TV show that a celebrity has starred in after they die. But commercials are more recent, more "alive," more "of the moment" than some TV show that we all know is a repeat from one, ten, thirty years ago. And that's what's going to be odd about seeing these ads.

Well, they finally settled that Norm Coleman vs. Al Franken race in Minnesota. So I thought this would be a good opportunity to show Franken in another time, impersonating Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger on Solid Gold in the 80s. Partner Tom Davis is doing Keith Richards. Neil Patrick Harris to host Emmys?This seems to be Neil Patrick Harris' year. A tour-de-force season on How I Met Your Mother was followed by hosting stints on the Tonys and TV Land Awards that showed how natural he was in the role of awards host. Heck, he even managed to get the Tonys some viral street cred by doing a Billy Crystal-esque medley at the end that stated the show "could not be any gayer if Liza was named mayor and Elton John took flight."

So, it's not a big surprise to hear that NPH is near a deal to host the Emmys as well, according to Variety.

Karl MaldenThe celebrity death march continues.

Karl Malden has died at the age of 97. He was probably best known for his role as Lt. Mike Stone on the ABC series The Streets of San Francisco. Actually, he was probably equally well-known for his American Express "Don't Leave Home Without It" commercials that ran in the 70s and 80s.

He played the lead role in the short-lived NBC series Skag in 1980, but most of his roles were in movies, including Patton, On The Waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire, Kiss of Death, How The West Was Won, Birdman of Alcatraz, Murderer's Row, and Meteor. One of my favorite Malden roles was in the 50s movie Fear Strikes Out, where he played the pushy father of Red Sox outfielder Jimmy Piersall. His last role was a first season episode of The West Wing.

There's been so much coverage of Michael Jackson's death that there's bound to be great stuff and ... well, not so great stuff. In fact, lots of not so great stuff. Last night The Daily Show gave awards to the worst moments. This is really funny. Did Geraldo really use a whiteboard like that, and did CNN actually have an animation of his heart? Amazing.

Tony HarrisI get antsy watching CNN's Tony Harris do the news. He always has these uncomfortable hiccups in his delivery and he's always looking off camera, as if the next word in the sentence is floating in the air next to him or on the table and he has to look to see what it is so he can continue.

But I find this funny: Harris is on Facebook, but he told CNN viewers yesterday that he has no idea how to log on to it and finds the whole thing "stalkerish." I'm looking for the video and will post it here if I can find it.

Simon Cowell is looking at more than $140 million to stay on American Idol.If Simon Cowell decides to stay in his judge's chair on American Idol, he'll have to squeak along on a salary of more than $100 million.

The U.K. and U.S. tabloid press reports that Cowell is negotiating for more than $140 million to return to Idol. That's just a slight raise over the reported $36 million he made for sitting on his backside and ridiculing warbling wannabes last year.

Who knew being aggressively obnoxious and judgmental could pay off so well? (In fairness, his very successful work as a record executive might have played a little part in his success, too.)

John Barrowman took a shot at his bosses over the short Torchwood season.With the premiere of Torchwood: Children of Earth closing in at BBC America, John Barrowman is picking an unusual time to kick BBC executives in the pants.

The leading man and variety host told the British papers that he feels like the BBC is punishing him and Torchwood by cutting the show down to a week-long, five-episode mini-series run.

Barrowman's timing is odd, as there were no reports of dissatisfaction before, during or after filming on the short run. Meanwhile, there's plenty of positive publicity buzzing around the new season, and there was no desperate need to get people interested via a complaint.

The comedy Gervais co-wrote and directed with Matthew Robinson explores a world where no one has ever lied until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain.

Gervais doesn't want critics to expect too much. On his blog, he wrote, "Dear critics (everyone), when judging the film, please remember that it is a high concept, PG-13 romantic comedy. It's not Schindler's List or The Godfather."

The MSNBC Countdown's Wikipedia page reported he had died earlier this morning, possibly due to complications from celiac disease.

I sent emails to two networks officials to confirm this jarring claim. Jeremy Gaines, MSNBC's vice president of communications, responded that he is certain the entry is a "hoax" and that he and other network officials were working to correct it. The section on Olbermann's death has since been removed from the page.

Alonzo, Michael JacksonYou've probably heard that at the time of his death, Michael Jackson was working on 50-date concert tour in London. From the various accounts of the production and rehearsal photos that were released this week, it looks like it was going to be a typical Michael Jackson production: expensive, outlandish, and explosive. A real spectacle that was going to include burning bed and a giant orb.

Rachel MinerThat's because a new actress will be playing the role of the female demon last seen a few seasons ago. She was played by Nicki Aycox is several episodes, but now the role will be played by the woman on the right, Rachel Miner.

I'll always remember Miner from her role on Guiding Light (she played Michelle Bauer in the mid-90s), but she was also married to Macauley Culkin for a short time. Everything has a Michael Jackson connection these days.

Jon and Kate: Were they split during their Hawaii wedding?According to the New York Daily News, Jon and Kate Gosselin have decided to go in media blackout mode as they figure out their divorce. On the show's page on the TLC web site, the couple released a statement that mentions why they've stopped talking to the media:

"During this very difficult time we will be working to focus solely on the needs of our family. This includes no longer commenting publicly or reacting to media stories and speculation. Our goal is to do the very best for our children and that will be done as privately as possible."

They've even gone so far as to file their divorce in a court that will keep their records sealed. Unfortunately, it all feels like a bunch of "too little too late" moves. If they're trying to protect the children, why did Kate and Jon spend the last four months talking to magazines like People for months on end? Why did they announce their split in front of 10.6 million gawkers (including me)? Why in the hell did they even start their show to begin with?
