Or maybe he just doesn't want to. The actor, whose Fox situation comedy, Back to You, was canceled after just one season, doesn't want to call it quits. He wants the show to continue and he's so determined, he's even lobbied for the show personally. The Emmy award winning star phoned CBS executives -- including CBS CEO Les Moonves -- to plead the case for Back to You.

When Kelsey phoned, Les took the call, and he even told Grammer that he'd "think about it," that is, moving Back to You to CBS. However, when Kelsey followed up with a call to Nina Tassler, CBS Entertainment prez, she dismissed it. There really was no room on the CBS schedule for another sitcom; even Rules of Engagement (which CBS has a vested interest in bringing back) won't be broadcast till mid-season next year. There's no mention of Kelsey calling ABC or NBC; perhaps they didn't take his call?
Continue reading Kelsey asks CBS to save Back to You

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Flavor of Love: Three's a charm - VIDEO

Filed under: Programming, Celebrities, Cancellations, Super Skank Wednesday
<img width="249" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="199" border="0" align="right" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.tvsquad.com/media/2008/05/charm%282%29.jpg" id="img1" alt="Flavor Flav and his season one cast. For the most part, things are staying the same, but there are two new sitcoms and four hour dramas planned. Here are the highlights:

Returning: The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Rules of Engagement, The Unit, Cold Case, Numb3rs, Criminal Minds, The Ghost Whisperer, CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, NCIS, 60 Minutes, Without A Trace, Survivor, The Amazing Race

Out: Shark, Moonlight, Cane, Kid Nation, Power of 10, Secret Talents of the Stars, Viva Laughlin, Welcome to the Captain

New: The Worst Week, Project Gary, The Ex List, Eleventh Hour, The Mentalist

Mid-season: Harper's Island, Rules of Engagement

Schedule and detailed descriptions of the new shows coming soon, after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

CBS says yes to Christine & Rules, no to Shark

Filed under: Cancellations, Pickups and Renewals, Shark, Reality-Free
CBS doesn't announce its new schedule till tomorrow, but the news is spilling out everywhere about what's in and what's out. The New Adventures of Old Christine has been given a 22-episode commitment for a third season; Shark has been sunk. For fans of the James Woods legal drama -- and I know there are lots of you out there because you've posted here -- my heart goes out to you. It was a good show, but it seems that CBS has four new dramas on deck for next season (that we have heard they're announcing tomorrow), so something had to give. It's likely that the choice came down between The Unit and Shark, with The Unit getting the renewal.

As for Christine, I say "Yeah!" I love Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Hamish Linklater (Matthew, her brother on the show) and would have been really upset if CBS let the show get away. If the network had passed on the sitcom, ABC was reportedly very, very interested in taking it on. They had visions of pairing Samantha Who? with Christine for an all-girl sitcom hour. That's not going to happen now because Julia is staying put on CBS.

Whether the show remains on Monday nights, however, is still to be determined. For the past year, it has mostly shared the 9:30 slot with Rules of Engagement, which has also been renewed. Some reporters are suggesting that CBS could be launching a second sitcom night.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Upfronts: The CW

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Comedy Shows, Other Reality Shows, Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Industry, Programming, Smallville, Supernatural, America's Next Top Model, Cancellations, Pickups and Renewals, Upfronts, Reaper, Reality-Free, Gossip Girl
The CW released its 2008-09 prime-time schedule tonight, and here's the rundown:

Returning: Reaper, Smallville, Supernatural, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, America's Next Top Model, Everybody Hates Chris, The Game

Out: Aliens in America, Life is Wild, Girlfriends

New: 90210, Surviving the Filthy Rich, Stylista

More after the jump...

Continue reading The Upfronts: The CW
<p style="clear: both; Vampires might be immortal, but this cult favorite is not. Today, sources at CBS have confirmed (though this is "not truly official" yet): The bubble has been popped, and the network has decided not to renew the series for a second season. You can't say the fans haven't tried to save this show, hosting nationwide blood drives and showering the network with garlic cloves. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, the show couldn't sustain viewers after Ghost Whisperer on Friday nights. Rabid, repeat viewings by diehard fans don't really count as multiple viewers, I guess.

This will cast a pall at this month's Moonlight Convention, I'll bet.
Continue reading Moonlight done, say CBS sources

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Upfronts: ABC

Filed under: Industry, Programming, Cancellations, Pickups and Renewals, Upfronts, Reality-Free
ABC released its 2008-09 prime-time schedule this morning during a press conference call conducted by Steve McPherson, president of ABC Entertainment.
As we told you earlier, FOX decided to dump Back To You but keep 'Til Death. This surprised many fans of the show, as they thought that out of the two of them FOX would probably go with the Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton/Fred Willard show instead of the Brad Garrett/Joely Fisher show. Funny how Garrett played Heaton's brother-in-law on Everybody Loves Raymond and now it's his show being renewed while she is kicked to the curb.

Now the end has officially come for another ABC drama series. ABC has confirmed that October Road is over. The long and winding road is no more, so to speak. ABC has no room in the fall lineup, apparently, and a plan to move October Road and Men in Trees to Lifetime never panned out. So all the die-hard fans who've been writing the network and crafting petitions can give it up. No amount of peanuts or blood drives -- oh, wait, that was Jericho and Moonlight. The Roadies had a different tack; buy the DVD, donate it to a library to get more people watching and writing to ABC. Despite the sincere efforts, the network still chose to end the road and move on to a newer, different show.
Continue reading October Road hits its end

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

David E. Lately, most articles made me optimistic since they said that the show had a good chance of getting a second season. Actually, some people said it was almost a done deal because the CBS Friday night lineup was doing very well. But, as people keeping tabs on the upfronts know, things can change in a split second.
Continue reading It's time to intensify Operation: Renew Moonlight!

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Hey kids, it's Upfront Week again!

Filed under: Industry, Programming, Site Announcements, Cancellations, Pickups and Renewals, Upfronts, Reality-Free

Upfront week is that time of year when all of the networks get together for an ice cream social and announce which new shows they'll have in the fall, which old shows are returning, and which shows have been, well, sent to TV heaven. That week is this week! Some networks have toned down their presentations and parties this year.

NBC had their official upfront last month, but today they'll be making more announcements about their fall schedule (I'll have a post up about it later today). ABC and The CW will hold their upfronts on Tuesday. On Wednesday, CBS will hold their upfront, and on <strike>Friday</strike> Thursday FOX will have theirs.

TV Squad will have full coverage all week, so check back (you're checking back every single day anyway, right?).

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

American version of Spaced put to rest?

If the rumors are to be believed, then the inevitable has occurred. Fox has passed on the Americanized version of Spaced (nicknamed "McSpaced") and its fans are breathing a collective sigh of relief.

Producer McG made a huge mistake when he decided to not include the creators of the original, British version in his remake yet he included their as if they were still involved. Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes-Stevenson and Edgar Wright have been very vocal in their displeasure regarding the remake.

Known for its cinematic style and pop culture references, the original Spaced launched the careers of everyone involved. Pegg and Wright have gone on to bigger and better things (such as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) and Stevenson has starred in several British productions afterwards.

It's never a good sign when one is trying to remake a show and pisses off the original creators. NBC was smart enough to have the creators of The Office rewrite their original pilot and give them creator credits. Why couldn't Spaced?

[via Aint It Cool]

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Aliens in America gets axed

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Cancellations, Reality-Free

Two weeks ago, I posted about Aliens in America's Adhir Kalyan landing an important recurring role on FX's Nip/Tuck. The pilot for the Jason Bateman directed comedy series The Inn has been picked up for a 13-week commitment, while Back to You has been axed. The Brad Garrett-Joely Fisher sitcom, Til Death, meanwhile, has been given another year.

Bateman, who starred in Arrested Development -- the Emmy-award winning comedy that the network dumped unceremoniously because of low ratings -- was behind the camera for The Inn pilot. The show, which is about the haves and have-nots in a fancy, five-star New York City hotel, has a promising cast of funny folks including Niecy Nash (Reno 911!), Jerry O'Connell (who looks like Jason's twin), and the really hilarious Jesse Tyler Ferguson (remember him on The Class -- he was so funny!).

Gallery: Back to You + Til Death
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/back-to-you-til-death/798862/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/back-to-you-til-death/798863/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/back-to-you-til-death/798865/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/back-to-you-til-death/798866/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/back-to-you-til-death/798868/">

Continue reading The Inn is in, but Kelsey & Patty are dumped

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Oxygen to Talk Sex no longer

Filed under: Late Night, OpEd, Web, Talk Show, Cancellations, Reality-Free
After six seasons, Oxygen is shutting down Talk Sex with Sue Johanson. Her final advice on love, lust and awkward positions will be dispensed this Sunday, May 11. The show will feature the year's top ten sex toys. Wheee!

A frequent guest on talk shows (and a favorite of David Letterman's), the 78-year-old grandma of two has been dishing sex advice on Oxygen for six seasons. Whenever I've stumbled across the show, I always thought it was just so weird. Like getting sex advice from your grandma.

Then again, between Johanson and Dr. Ruth, maybe they make the best sexperts because you'd never look at them in a lustful way. Now it looks like those socks might be going to the wrong place.

On her TV Guide blog, Valarie Rae Miller discloses that a lot of socks that viewers have sent in have actually gone to the old WB offices! As she puts it, "no one will see them but some security guard and an unhappy mail carrier." She also gives the correct address to send your socks to:

Continue reading Reaper fans: make sure you send your socks to the right address

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Expect the networks to renew more shows than usual

Filed under: Industry, Boston Legal, How I Met Your Mother, Cancellations, Pickups and Renewals, Reaper, Moonlight, WGA Strike, Eli Stone, Reality-Free
The reverberations caused by the writers' strike continue to affect how the networks are doing business. Case in point: according to The Hollywood Reporter's James Hibberd, the networks may be more generous with renewals than they have in the past, due to the fact that even hit shows have been returning to diminished ratings. My guess is that, after a three-month break, most people realized they didn't give two craps about things like Meredith and McDreamy's latest breakup. But it may just be that the weather's nice outside.

Anyway, Hibberd goes on to mention the current status of some of the most prominent "bubble" shows. The good news: Reaper, Old Christine, and HIMYM and Moonlight have shifted over towards the "likely to certain" end of the spectrum, and Boston Legal will likely survive for another year. The bad news: Shark, Men In Trees (which is already gone, according to reports), Cashmere Mafia, and October Road are likely gone. And there's still no real feel for what's going to happen with Eli Stone or Women's Murder Club.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Men in Trees axed by ABC

I'd like to say I'm surprised by this, but I'm not. ABC has canceled Men in Trees. Despite being one of the genuinely sweet and funny comedy/dramas on the network -- one that's more rooted in reality than flights of whimsy and pretentiousness -- Men in Trees has struggled to find a home on ABC. It's been shuttled about from day to day, time slot to time slot, in and out of the line up so that it became a gypsy. How were you as a viewer to invest in the romantic adventure that Marin Frist was on in the wilds of Alaska when you weren't sure when the dang show was going to air? A failed attempt to put the show on Lifetime back in March spelled doom for the show.

Gallery: Men in Trees - 5/5/08
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/men-in-trees-5-5-08/788883/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/men-in-trees-5-5-08/788988/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/men-in-trees-5-5-08/788989/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/men-in-trees-5-5-08/788991/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/men-in-trees-5-5-08/788993/">

Continue reading Men in Trees axed by ABC

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Beauty and Geek may be canceled ... or not

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Programming, Cancellations

While the women of Beauty and the Geek may be gorgeous, the show itself is guilty of the exact opposite - it's ugly to watch. Despite that assessment (I've seen a few episodes and never got hooked), the Ashton Kutcher produced show is currently in its fifth season; so somebody is watching it. Not enough people, though. Variety is reporting that the upcoming fifth season finale may very well be the show's last... for now anyway. The CW might actually just shelve it for a few seasons until they can bring it back and make it feel "new" again.

That's a smart idea if you ask me. Other reality shows that have reached the "stale" status should take a hint. I'm looking at you Survivor and American Idol. Most of these reality programs have done all they can to re-invent formulas and sometimes the only thing that works is an extended absence. Here's to hoping this one stays permanent.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

CBS Democratic presidential debate canceled

If you're sick of hearing about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, then this should come as welcome news. According to TV Newser, the North Carolina Democratic Party has canceled a scheduled debate between the two remaining candidates. It was set to air on CBS. Katie Couric and Bob Schieffer were scheduled to moderate. It would have probably earned decent ratings, too, since CBS planned to air the hour long debate following an episode of 60 Minutes.

According to the NCDP website, the debate was canceled due to "time constraints and logistical issues." I suppose that makes sense. Both Clinton and Obama are running around like crazy in an effort to secure last minute votes during the final Democratic primaries. Pennsylvania's is today.
