But is Whoopi Goldberg hosting the 62nd Tony Awards the answer for the struggling annual broadcast? The Tony Awards, which honors the best in Broadway theater is considered one of the four major entertainment awards, along with the Oscar, Emmy and Grammy. But the Tonys have been losing viewership year after year despite the stars lured onto the broadcast. After having no single host the past two years, CBS has tapped Whoopi to be the emcee for the June 15 live broadcast from Radio City Music Hall in hopes that she'll make a difference in the Nielsens. The last single host was Hugh Jackman in 2005.

While this is Whoopi's first turn as Tony host, she is well regarded for her four stints as Oscar hostess. At the most recent Oscars, when Whoopi was left out of the host-highlight clip package of years gone by, she was ticked off and talked about it the morning after on The View. Perhaps doing the Tonys will be her way of sticking to the Oscars?

Gallery: Whoopi Goldberg
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/whoopi-goldberg/797296/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/whoopi-goldberg/797297/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/whoopi-goldberg/797298/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/whoopi-goldberg/797300/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/whoopi-goldberg/797302/">

Continue reading Can Whoopi save the Tony Awards?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

GLAAD Media awards recognize outstanding TV series

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Celebrities, Ugly Betty, Brothers and Sisters, Awards

Ugly Betty, Brothers & Sisters, and Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List all received GLAAD Media awards in a ceremony held over the weekend. The award honors fair media portrayals of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. This is the second GLAAD award for both ABC shows, which won for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Drama Series. Kathy Griffin's show is a first-time winner in the Outstanding Reality Series category.

The event was attended by many TV personalities, including T.R. Knight, Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Kimmel, and Sally Field. Bravo will air the ceremony at an undetermined date and time. This was announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association this past Tuesday. Nominees will be announced on December 11, 2008. It will be broadcast by NBC from the Beverly Hilton.

The awards show used to be shown in late January, but after the rescheduling of the Academy Awards in 2004, the date was bumped up to compensate. The Golden Globes are not expect to affect the Academy Awards outcome since the judges for the Oscars are to have mailed in their ballots by the time the Golden Globes are broadcast.

Having adopted a "magazine" format to the 2008 show due to the WGA Strike, the show suffered a serious drop in ratings. They couldn't even have a red carpet event before the show to put the celebrities on display. Most likely, the 2009 broadcast will return to the traditional format and a bump in the ratings.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Reality TV hosts get their own Emmy category

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, American Idol, Celebrities, America's Next Top Model, Game Show, Dancing With The Stars, Awards, Host, Emmys

Just when you thought awards shows couldn't get any longer, The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced that reality show hosts are eligible to receive Emmys. This year's 60th Annual Emmy Awards will include a category called Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program.

The academy named popular hosts like Ryan Seacrest, Tom Bergeron, Samantha Harris, and Howie Mandel as possible nominees. Ty Pennington, Tyra Banks, and Jeff Foxworthy are also eligible. I'm not surprised that reality hosts are getting this opportunity. The Emmys have had categories for Outstanding Reality Program and Reality-Competition Program since 2001 and 2003, respectively.

Continue reading Reality TV hosts get their own Emmy category

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Maude, Merv & M*A*S*H man entering Emmy Hall of Fame

Each year, the Emmys honor the best in current TV. They also recognize the all-time greats. This year Bea Arthur, Larry Gelbart, Merv Griffin, Daniel Burke, Tom Murphy and Sherwood Schwartz will be entering the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Hall of Fame. Grand choices, in my opinion, with only a minor quibble which I'll mention later.

According to ATAS chairman and CEO John Shaffner , "The Hall of Fame is a special recognition for those who have made significant contributions and have left an indelible mark on the television business." As Maude in the 1970's and Dorothy on The Golden Girls in the 1980's (into the '90s) Beatrice Arthur, made her mark. She was more effective on TV than she was in the theater, and she was a dynamo on stage.

Gallery: ATAS Hall of Fame 2008
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/atas-hall-of-fame-2008/758227/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/atas-hall-of-fame-2008/758229/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/atas-hall-of-fame-2008/758231/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/atas-hall-of-fame-2008/758236/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/atas-hall-of-fame-2008/758237/">

Continue reading Maude, Merv & M*A*S*H man entering Emmy Hall of Fame

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Mad Men, 30 Rock & others honored with Peabody awards

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, News, Project Runway, 30 Rock, Documentary, Awards
They most prestigious award for excellence in broadcasting -- next to the Emmys -- were announced today. The 67th Annual Peabody Awards honored Mad Men, 30 Rock, Dexter, Project Runway, The Colbert Report -- all favorites here at TV Squad -- among others. To the Peabody Award voters, I say, "Good job."

The winners, chosen by the Peabody board -- which is part of the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication -- will receive the awards on June 16 at a luncheon at New York's Waldorf Astoria. NBC News anchorman Brian Williams will be the emcee.
Continue reading Mad Men, 30 Rock & others honored with Peabody awards

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Daytime Emmys add court category

The Daytime Emmys have rendered their verdict: court TV shows will compete in their own Emmy award category. On April 30th, when the nominations are announced, legal shows will vie against each other in a new category meant to honor the best in court television. That means for the first time ever, Judge Judy can go up against the likes of The People's Court, Judge Alex, Divorce Court and the rest of the justice-driven syndicated real drama series currently on the air.

Continue reading Daytime Emmys add court category

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Regis rates lifetime achievement Emmy

Filed under: Daytime, Celebrities, Talk Show, Awards, Emmys
Everyone knew that Regis Philbin is the king, now he'll have some extra hardware to prove it. Think about it, Lee Pace as the Pie Man on Pushing Daisies, Jonny Lee Miller on Eli Stone, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in New Amsterdam, Michelle Ryan in Bionic Woman, all of these leads are relatively new faces. That's one way to cast series. Another is for big stars to take to TV, if not for the first time, than for a return.

In an interesting article at IGN.com, blogger Travis Fickett points out that there used to be a line of demarcation between the worlds of acting: film actors vs. television actors. But nowadays the stars are going back and forth a lot more fluidly.

Gallery: 10 Stars
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/10-stars/690172/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/10-stars/690174/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/10-stars/690175/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/10-stars/690176/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/10-stars/690178/">

Continue reading Ten actors I want to see on TV

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Oscars a flop in Nielsens and that's not all

Filed under: Daytime, Celebrities, Ratings, Awards, Emmys
Oscar turned 80 last night. For eight decades, Hollywood has been handing out gold statuettes for the best in motion picture arts and sciences. Sadly, last night's show will not have to worry about winning an Emmy. Not only was the show pedestrian, long and uninspired, it was also a bomb in the Nielsen overnight ratings. In fact, it was historically disappointing: averaging just 32 million viewers to become the least watched Oscar telecast ever! EVER, people!

Of course, if you're worried that with ratings so bad, some day the Academy Awards won't be broadcast -- don't. The Oscars, like the Super Bowl, make a fortune for the network broadcasting it. ABC made an average of $1.8 million for each 30-second spot.
Continue reading Oscars a flop in Nielsens and that's not all

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Showtime pilot for Edie Falco

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, CSI, Cable/Satellite, Pickups and Renewals, 30 Rock, Awards, Weeds, Emmys
If you've watched 30 Rock this past season, you've seen how funny actress Edie Falco can be. As C.C. (Celeste Cunningham), she's been a hoot opposite Alec Baldwin. Well, Showtime noticed, and they announced today that the three-time Emmy-winner, best known as Carmela on The Sopranos, will star in a new show for their network. She'll be playing a "strong-willed, iconoclastic New York City nurse juggling the frenzied grind of an urban hospital and an equally challenging personal life" is the 30-minute, single camera, dark comedy.
Continue reading Showtime pilot for Edie Falco

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Lost leads the pack with seven Saturn nominations

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Family Guy, Stargate, Supernatural, Doctor Who, Celebrities, The Closer, Eureka, Kyle XY, Heroes, Dexter, Torchwood, Awards, Pushing Daisies, Journeyman, The Sarah Connor Chronicles

The Saturn Award nominations are in, and many popular sci-fi and fantasy shows made the cut. Returning favorites like Lost, Heroes, and Dexter were recognized by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films, as were newcomers Pushing Daisies and Journeyman.

With seven nominations, Lost is ahead of Dexter and Heroes, which received five and four nominations, respectively. Heroes was the big winner last year, taking home awards for Best Network Series as well as acting awards for Masi Oka and Hayden Panettiere. Both actors received nominations this year, along with co-star Greg Grunberg.

Kristin will be joined by Marlon Saunders, who played the Central Park Calypso singer in the movie. By the by, Enchanted's star, Amy Adams, will also be singing on the show. She's doing, "Happy Working Song," another nominated song from the Disney hit. FYI, that's the sing-along tune she did in the film with cockroaches, rats and other happy vermin. You can just imagine Walt Disney spinning in his grave, can't you?
Continue reading Pushing Oscars - Kristin Chenoweth to sing at Academy Awards

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Four stars for Barbara Walters Oscar Special

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, News, Celebrities, Children, Ugly Betty, Awards
As the Academy Award presentation approaches, that can only mean one thing -- time for a new Barbara Walters special. Yes, yes, what matters most before the big show isn't the red carpet and the fashions, it's who will Barbara be interviewing for her annual Oscar edition? Ms. Walters has four biggies lined up for the Sunday, February 24th (7:00-8:00 p.m. ET) broadcast. Oscar nominee Ellen Page, star of Juno; Indiana Jones, himself, Harrison Ford; Ugly Betty diva, Vanessa Williams; and Hannah Montana/teen queen Miley Cyrus. It's an eclectic group, to say the least, but then, that's Baba Wawa's formula for success, is it not? After all, this is her 27th straight year doing a pre-Oscar special.
Continue reading Four stars for Barbara Walters Oscar Special

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Bob Newhart to accept Walk of Fame star for Suzanne Pleshette

Filed under: TV Royalty, Celebrities, Awards

When Suzanne Pleshette passed away a couple of weeks ago of respiratory failure, it seemed to derail the plans for her to get a star on the Walk of Fame sidewalk in Hollywood. A lot of times when a celebrity has died they won't do a public ceremony. But tomorrow's ceremony is going forward, with a familiar face at the helm.

Pleshette's television hubby Bob Newhart will lead the ceremonies tomorrow, on what would have been Pleshette's 71st birthday. Newhart also gave the eulogy at her funeral last week, along with Bob Newhart Show co-star (andlongtime Simpsons voice) Marcia Wallace.

Continue reading Bob Newhart to accept Walk of Fame star for Suzanne Pleshette

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Live Blogging The Screen Actors Guild Awards

10:04: OK, that's it for me.
See you next Friday night at Zac Efron's house.

10:01: Did Josh Brolin just make a snide reference to Julie Christie's "tiniest actor" comment when she accepted her award a few minutes ago, or was it just a joke I didn't get?

9:46: This Farmer's Help Point ad is freaky, but I had a dream the other night that was even stranger. I won't go into details, but it involved a mutant cannibal family and a used record store. That's the last time I eat 8 Reese's Peanut Butter Cups right before bed.

9:36: Blair Underwood talking about the new technology that has come to film and television. The hidden message here is...pay the damn writers for stuff on the internet and cell phones!

9:29: These tributes to the people who died in the past year always make me nervous, because I'm afraid they'll forget someone. But this was well done, including TV character actors with the big name stars, and was even up to date as late as last week.

Where the Golden Globe Awards were reduced to an extended press conference type event and the Academy Awards might have some alternative plan in place, the SAG Awards are actually going to have stars and a red carpet and acceptance speeches. It might turn out to be the awards show to watch this year.

I'll be live blogging the awards tonight, starting at 7:30pm EST. That means I'll get a half hour's worth of the red carpet coverage. I could have started the blogging at 5pm, when E!'s red carpet coverage starts, but then I realized that three hours of red carpet blogging would be insane. I think a half hour on the carpet and two hours of show coverage will be plenty. The show airs at 8 on TNT and TBS.

For a while there, it looked like the Oscars might be in danger of going the route of the Golden Globes (ugh), especially since the Writers Guild of America wasn't going to give the show a waiver during the strike, but they've come up with a plan. Two plans, actually. One idea is to just do the show as usual (with some changes, of course), and another idea would be "industry heavyweights writing their own speeches and presenting the awards." Though I wonder if those same heavyweights wouldn't want to do that since they support the writers. Also, how will the red carpet look if several stars boycott or go in the back door?

I also wonder how this will affect Jon Stewart. He's already irritated some by doing The Daily Show during the strike, and now he's going to host the Oscars too?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Writers Guild may block the Grammy Awards

Filed under: Industry, Watercooler Talk, Awards, WGA Strike

This year's awards season, barely a month old now, has not been a good one for Hollywood. First, the Golden Globes ceremony was reduced to an Access Hollywood special after members of the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild boycotted the show. Now, it looks like the Grammy Awards ceremony may also be in trouble.

It is being reported that the striking guild will probably bar its members from working on the February 10th Grammys telecast. Grammy organizers have yet to ask for a waiver allowing for writers to work on the show. However, according to a WGA spokesperson, a waiver grant would be unlikely. There is no word if the WGA will picket the ceremony. If it does, then SAG members will not cross the picket line. This potentially means another exciting 1-hour infotainment special.

I'm sure members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are sweating a bit now.

So not only does NBC not have an awards show, but they don't even get first dibs on announcing the winners.

First of all, does Billy Bush always wear his hair like that or did he leave his roof down in the convertible with his hair wet and gelled? It looks like a slicked back mullet, and that's not a look just anyone can pull off. In fact, no one can pull off that look. But it may have actually been a better choice than the brown suit. Sadly, though, the suit and hair was the least of the problems with last night's one hour Golden Globe "extravaganza."
Continue reading The Golden Globes, or how to make me hate an awards show

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
