Simon CowellNow, maybe Simon Cowell's already had a tell-all book about his life, or revealed his childhood a hundred times, but if he has I never saw it. So when I saw this short story about his childhood, it struck me on several levels. In it he stated that he was "always bored" growing up. Apparently, he still hasn't licked that problem because today on American Idol he still looks bored half the time, except when he's pissed at a kid for rearranging "I Shot the Sheriff."

He also indicated that frustration with his life led him to thoughts of suicide, though it isn't made clear if we're talking more serious contemplation than most teenagers, who consider it at one time or another in moments of extreme emotion. So now he pushes other kids to those emotional extremes to make sure they're made of tough enough stuff. I hope they have a suicide watch in Hollywood!

Simon CowellJust when some people are saying that American Idol should shake things up a bit comes this bit of news from one of the judges: they might lower the age for contestants.

Right now the youngest a performer can be on the show is 16 (fan favorite David Archuleta is 17) and the highest limit is 30, which is really old in pop music terms I guess. But judge Simon Cowell tells Extra that the FOX show might drop the lowest age from 16 to 14. Then, if that works out well, the plan is to eventually have contestants audition directly from their mother's womb. That would be fantastic television, having fetuses go up against 25 year-olds.

Cowell also suggests that potential contestants, especially the girls, cry a lot more to get sympathy and get more votes from viewers. FOX should get ready for some phone calls from the L.A. chapter of NOW.

Paula AbdulThe rumor that Paula Abdul will be a contestant on Dancing With The Stars has been floating around for a while now, and gained a little more steam with Paula's recent appearance on the show. Now, along with all the fan chatter, we are getting reactions from some of the people involved with the show. Our pals over at TV Guide sent along a press release for their upcoming issue, which you can find in its entirety after the jump, with quotes from Carrie Ann and Bruno.

In a nutshell, Bruno thinks she would win. Carrie Ann says that Paula is fragile and won't realize how much pressure is on her until she's signed up and can't get out. I asked DWTS pro Jonathan Roberts about it Monday night and his take was that he would be surprised to see Paula compete on the show because of her extensive dance background. He added that he thinks Paula has been around reality TV enough that she would know what she is getting into. I say, good or bad, it's a spectacle waiting to happen. What do you think? Paula AbdulIt's become a Tuesday night staple in this country. We all pop some corn, snuggle into our afghan blankets and huddle en masse around our tubages of boobages just to watch the litany of lyrical losers parading across our flashing screens. We cheer early on as they rant and roar, calling foul and blaming the judges and camera crews for the fact that they just plain suck. And we eat it up like candy.

But once it all settles down and we're left with only those singers with real talent, where can we go for our weekly dose of crazy? Yes, this is something that is an important part of the American Idol experience. The producers aren't stupid. They know that once the crazy contestants are flushed away they risk the chance of losing the 'slow down to look at an accident and I better see a body if I had to sit in traffic for more than ten minutes for this or at least a severed limb' crowd. And that, my friends, is why I bring you 'Exhibit A': Ms. Paula Abdul.

America's Best Dance CrewWhen American Idol's Randy Jackson announced that he was producing a competition for dance crews, instead of solo dancers like So You Think You Can Dance, I thought this was a great idea. On SYTYCD there were always these great street dancers who couldn't handle the discipline of ballroom but where great at what you could do. Well, apparently Randy had the right idea because Randy Jackson Presents: America's Best Dance Crew was a monster hit for MTV this past winter.

So it was inevitably renewed, and we've just gotten the list of audition dates and cities. The rules are pretty simple. Be 18 years and up and be part of a crew of 5-7 members. Then be able to get to New York April 18th, Houston April 21st, LA April 29th or Chicago May 3rd. Or, if you kind of suck, plan to go to all four sites. Paula Abdul - I'm not ashamed to admit it. I grew up with the Paula Abdul vs. Janet Jackson rivalry. Janet had a better singing voice, but Paula was the better dancer. Now, here it is six hundred years or so later and while Janet's never stopped recording, it's been awhile since we've seen Ms. Abdul sing and dance. If you missed her Super Bowl performance, now she and Randy Jackson have released the official music video for their new single "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow."

For a woman of 45, Paula looks and moves great. Her vocals are about what they've always been, but nevertheless this has a great dance hook and should do very well in the club scene. Maybe this will be the beginning of a full-fledged comeback for her.

JabbaWockeeZOf course everyone knows about a little project named American Idol that judge Randy Jackson is a part of. But like Simon Cowell before him, Randy wasn't content to sit on his laurels and collect that fat paycheck. He had other ideas, and MTV was smart enough to pick up his latest reality competition.

As someone who spent ten years in dance, going so far as to perform with the St. Louis Ballet Company, it is always exciting for me to see dance represented on television. And when street dance troupes started appearing on So You Think You Can Dance auditions I felt that a competition show should be built for them. Most were brilliant at what they did and incredibly popular with the audience, but struggled in the structured more classically-styled demands of So You Think. A competition tailored to the type of dancing they excelled at would be perfect and should prove popular.

Simon CowellI'm trying to think back in my mental Rolodex to the season of American Idol that featured Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks. I know that Simon Cowell wasn't too big on Hicks, but didn't he at some point praise McPhee and her singing?

That seems to have been forgotten by Cowell. He tells ExtraTV.com that he "didn't care much for Katharine McPhee. I don't think she was a credible recording artist. Katharine will end up on Broadway!"

Paula Abdul - Well, it wasn't halftime, but Paula Abdul did "rock" the Super Bowl. Somehow, when I sat down in front of my TV for a second before heading out, it was just at the moment when Ryan Seacrest was introducing the Abdul performance. This was about two hours or so before the game in the middle of FOX's fifty-six hour long pre-game coverage, so it was sheer luck that I saw it at all.

That said, I don't know what I think about it. The song is nice enough, and it was fun seeing good old Randy Jackson jamming out behind her on bass guitar, but it sure seemed like she was lip-synching. I even feel pretty damned confident I saw her out of synch with the track at a few points. That said, my girl can still dance and proves that over forty can still be hot.

Simon CowellNever mind what Paula Abdul is going to do at today's Super Bowl, this is more entertaining.

It's a scene from the 1978 film Junior High School, and yes, that is American Idol judge Paula Abdul "singing" the tune (I don't think Simon would give her a "yes"), which is probably called "We're Gonna Have A Party" or something similar. The clip is fascinating, on so many levels. It's like a local cable version of Degrassi Junior High. The IMDb tells us that it was filmed at Van Nuys High and featured "non-professionals and actual students," though that's very obvious when you see the clip.

I particularly like the hair and clothes on everyone (the '70s were a very odd time, people). I'm also fascinated by the shifts in tone in the clip. It starts out like a low budget High School Musical, then it shifts in Degrassi territory, and then it goes into the girl's bathroom and turns into a film noir, complete with sax music.

And I really don't want to know what Keith has in that briefcase.

Randy Jackson AOL TV has an interview with Randy Jackson up right now. The interview asks a lot of good questions (i.e. "Paula gets a bad rap. Do you think you have to stick up for her?") but gets a lot of vague answers from the Idol judge who is just as articulate in the interview as he is on the show. Catch my sarcasm?

If you're a die-hard Idol fan, I would definitely check out the interview. But like I said, he skirts around some of the better questions using his signature crutch phrases like "You know what I mean?," "You just never know. You know?," and "It's cool, man." Very articulate, indeed.

He does, however, compare his new MTV show America's Best Dance Crew to Michael Jackson's "Beat It" video and he compares his new compilation album to a Quincy Jones album. That's good for a laugh. Now, I'm not a gambling woman. But I'd bet his CD won't be anything like a Quincy Jones album.

Paula Abdul - Opposites AttractIs it just idle rumors, or is "the nice judge" really in talks to join Tom Petty and perform at Super Bowl XLII on February 3? It certainly looks like Paula Abdul may just put on her dancing shoes and try to show Mr. Simon Cowell that she really can sing ... and dance. Adding credence to the rumors are the facts that the Super Bowl is on FOX this year, and that Abdul is supposedly already working on the video for her duet with fellow judge Randy Jackson from his upcoming Music Club Vol. 1 album.

Abdul, 45, hasn't had a major album release since 1995 (Head Over Heels), nor a #1 hit since 1991's "Promise of a New Day." Simon has given her constant ribbing for her lack of a career in the past ten-plus years, challenging her on numerous occasions to shut up and dance (or sing) on American Idol, but she's yet to meet his challenge. Considering that Abdul has kept herself in incredible shape, and more than likely can sing as well as she ever did, she shouldn't have any problem pulling off a good performance (so long as she watches what she puts in her cup). However, if she fails, you can expect the ribbing on the judge's panel to be ruthless from here through the end of Idol's seventh season.

Simon CowellSimon Cowell participated in a brief conference call this afternoon to talk about the upcoming seventh season of FOX's American Idol, and apparently a few completely unrelated topics as well. It was a strict question and answer format, so topics ranged from the style of the contestants to Simon's opinions of the current crop of Presidential candidates here in the US.

The "I'm not trying to be rude, but..." judge spoke confidently about the talent in this season's crop of contestants, stating that he felt the show was obligated to bring a better product to the screens than we had last year. Their job was to find better contestants and a stronger Top Twelve and he thinks they pulled it off.

American Idol JudgesIt's not even December, and American Idol's seventh season is still a month and a half away -- but the hype has already begun. According to an interview with Extra, the American Idol judges - Simon, Paula, and Randy -- are in agreement: This is going to be the BEST SEASON EVER!!

Last year, as you may recall, season six was often slammed by fans and critics as the WORST SEASON EVER. Who could forget Sanjaya? Oh wait, we did. His 15 minutes of fame only lasted 12.5 minutes. But for all of our Sanjaya-bashing, at least he kept things interesting in an otherwise bland and uninspiring year. Seriously, does anyone even care that Jordin Sparks just released her debut album?

Randy JacksonSo you think you can dance on "America's Best Dance Crew?" American Idol judge Randy Jackson and MTV certainly hope so. Or at least that you'll watch other dance crews try to earn that title. Variety tells us that Randy Jackson Presents America's Best Dance Crew, or RJPABDC for short, comes to us in the first quarter of next year, the same time FOX drops American Idol. No word on whether Jackson will appear on the show.

The show originated at NBC, but when they considered it might actually bring in viewers, they passed it up to develop Law & Order: Central High: "In the public education system, the students are represented by two separate, yet equally important, groups: the hall monitors who catch rules violators and the principals who discipline the offenders. These are their stories."

Simon CowellOkay maybe the five exclamation points weren't necessary, but I thought that they would drive the point across. Yes it is true, the insulter supreme, Simon Cowell, will be leaving America's favorite singing show (no not The Singing Bee) ... in three years.

Cowell will be stepping away from his on-screen roles on Idol and the UK's X Factor to work on his music and television production companies. Obviously, there is no word yet on potential replacements. I am hoping for Gary Busey, he seems like he knows how to cut someone down real good.

Paula Abdul(S01E01/S01E02) Hey, have you heard? American Idol's Paula Abdul is the latest celebrity to have a reality TV show on Bravo and it's called Hey Paula. And I'm so sure that we're all going to see Paula in a brand new light after getting a peek into her private life.

Or maybe not. Look, I like reading the tabloids, scanning celebrity gossip blogs, and even reading celebrity autobiographies (I just completed autobiographies by Jane Fonda, Marlon Brando, and Anne Heche). But when it comes to celebrity reality TV, it's almost like "you've seen one, you've seen them all." Do we really need another celebrity reality show? Or are some things better left unseen and unknown?

Paula AbdulPaula Abdul, often seen as a nurturing, loving maternal-figure to American Idol's young contestants, is now talking about her desire to experience personal motherhood. Paula says she "loves kids" and she'll consider adoption if she is unable to produce her own mini-Abduls.

Still, the 44-year-old former cheerleader remains optimistic about her chances of giving birth to a biological child. "With medical technology these days, I could have children by myself using a donor. But I would rather be in a relationship so the child has a father to help instill core values," Paula said.

Paula AbdulPaula Abdul recently told OK! Magazine, "Being a judge on American Idol overshadows being a Grammy Award winner and selling millions of records." Paula went on to say, "My purpose is bringing out everybody's best and being that cheerleader to other people's success."

As for her on-going erratic behavior, Abdul once again denied alcohol or drug abuse. "If I appeared exhausted on television, it's because I am! I have a lot of sleepless nights because I'm in so much pain." Paula suffers from reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), a chronic neurological disorder.

Simon CowellSure, Simon threatened to quit American Idol if Sanjaya won, but that seemed unlikely to ever happen. Look, even if Sanj did win by some miracle, Simon would have had to fulfill his contract with the show for the next three years. So Simon was never going anywhere. But that doesn't mean he won't quit -- eventually.

In fact, Simon recently announced that after his contract is up he will be moving on from the show that helped make him a super-rich celebrity.
