The production team behind the Discovery Channel's
MythBusters have
two new shows in the works for the science-loving channel. First up is
Prototype This, a 13-part series that looks at the viability of gadgets seen in sci-fi movies. As in, they'll actually try to build some of these futuristic marvels. I'm sure the military will be ecstatic. I'll just take my
Jetsons personalized jet pack and robot maid, thank you very much.
The second show,
Cool Stuff: How It Works, is a four-part series that takes a look at how the wonders of the modern world work - fireproof suits, robotic bomb detonators, etc. No word on whether or not they'll be able to explain TiVo, the electoral college or how a penalty kick shootout is fair, but they're smart guys. I'm sure they'll get around to it.

The team at TV Squad scours all the corners of the net looking for interesting junk, so you don't have to. And that's how I found my way to The Christian Science Monitor. Not one of my usual haunts, but they have a really
good article on Jamie and Adam from
Mythbusters. I'm a fan of the show, but I never really knew much more about the two of them than what they have revealed on the show.
While not an in depth bio, we do learn some more details about the backgrounds of the pair. A couple highlights - Jamie ran away from home for six months when he was 14, making it halfway across the country. Previous to the M5 effects shop he also owned a pet store and a boat charter business in the Caribbean. And somewhere along the line he got a degree in Russian literature. Adam has worked as an animator, graphic designer, set designer, and actor. His father did animation for
Sesame Street. The article also gets into just how different the two are. So much so that Jamie comments "I wouldn't spend five minutes with Adam outside of work if I didn't have to." But it's clear that the two are enjoying what they are doing and respect each other for their unique talents. Worth a click if you are a
Mythbusters fan. The new season of the show will begin airing in January.

Ever since getting a Tivo a little over a year ago, I no longer watch TV shows when they actually air. When I'm not catching up with what's on my recorder, I'm either reading, listening to podcasts, or pounding out a blog post about what I'm watching on television. The big deletion from my Tivo Season Pass this year is House. I still admire the show, but for me the magic is gone. The season opener sat on my Tivo for quite a few days, unwatched. When I finally sat down to view it I realized, about fifteen minutes into it, that I had completely lost interest in it. I didn't even finish the episode, and took it off my Tivo for good. Perhaps my attitude will change in the coming weeks, but who knows? Anyway, some of these shows are winding down their current seasons, some have yet to air. All times are Central because I live in Minnesota.

There are a handful of shows that I gave up this year, including
The O.C.,
The New Adventures of Old Christine,
Saturday Night Live, and
CSI. It's not because of time constraints, it's because those shows are stupid. Looking at my television schedule, I see that my Mondays are super light and my Wednesdays are incredibly packed. I only have two TiVos, so we'll have to catch
Mythbusters and
South Park when they replay later in the week.

(S03E17) It's been since May that we've seen a new episode of this show, but it's still season 3. This episode dealt with de-mythifying the Hollywood heist myths. You know the ones, where a thief uses all sorts of wild gadgets and tricks to get past advanced security systems. What I'd like to know is, how realistic are some of those crazy Mission Impossible-like security systems?

Myth: Kari, the hot-in-a-way-that's- hard-to-describe MythBuster girl will do a tasty spread for FHM magazine. Myth Confirmed.
I've been a fan of
MythBusters for a while now, and I can't help but admit that there's just something about Kari. Most likely it's the fact that here we have a cool, hip chick who loves downing beers with the guys and pierces things without getting overly pin-cushion on us, while at the same time loves science and getting down and geeky. Being not so bad on the eyes doesn't hurt either.

(S03E16) Another season down. I really couldn't imagine this show not being renewed for another season, so here's looking forward to the next one. This is one of those guilty-pleasure shows that I have to TiVo and watch later in the week, but it's always worth it.
This week, the MythBusters tackle one very weird myth, the myth of the exploding pants, and a few myths that seem very applicable today: the great gas conspiracy.

(S03E15) We're coming up on another season finale of
MythBusters next week. This week the MythBusters tackle a couple of ... odd myths.
Painting with Explosives: The myth is, if you blow up a can of paint in a room, will it coat the room fully with the paint? And can the room withstand the explosion? A Mr. Bean episode mocked being able to do this, even showing a silhouette where someone was standing in the way of the paint blast. The MythBusters set up a small room on a bombing range, complete with a Buster for simulating the silhouette. First go, the explosion covers the room about 40% with paint, no silhouette, and destroys part of it in the process. So, myth busted.

(S03E14) Another Myth revisit episode! I love when the MythBusters do these episodes, as it shows they truly do listen to the fans and try their best to
shut their whiny mouths up please them. They even let a fan provide some of the supplies!
The myths revisited this time: Spitting an arrow, the Confederate rocket and bullets fired into water.

(S03E13) This episode actually covered an
interesting myth I'd wondered about maybe once or twice before: if someone fires a bullet straight into the air, will
it fall back to Earth with deadly force? The MythBusters also grace us with a few more vodka myths, and thankfully I'm
not sure there are a whole mot more they can
waste our time with.
Speaking
of vodka myths, let's start with those.

Alright, so I've been a bit lax in my coverage of MythBusters lately. Well, I'm going to try to change all of that by
covering my TiVo'ed copy of last week's episode of the show and give you ar rundown of the myths covered and whether
they were busted or not.
Myths in this episode: Helium Filled Raft and Cell Phones on Planes.

If you're a fan of
Mythbusters you
should check out
this page
over on the Discovery Channel's Web site, which features clips from the show that never made it to air. I always
expected Adam's penchant for jokes sometimes wore thin on Jamie, and that's especially evident in one clip where Adam
smears engine grease on Jamie's toilet, which Jamie doesn't respond to very kindly. My favorite clip, though, is the
one featuring an otter swiping a ping-pong ball. It's cute, but it's also a tad scary considering that if the otter
were harmed, someone would have ended up going to jail. Possibly a jail run by otters.

Ever wanted to know what myths the MythBusters always wanted to do? How about which myths had results that surprised
the heck out of them? A while back, Slashdot had an open invitation for readers to submit questions for the Mythical
duo, and they
recently supplied the answers.
I, for one, can't wait to see the episode where they test the vertical bullet myth they talk about!

OK, so this question wasn't really meant to be asked to us, but I couldn't resist. I know I've been in this kid's shoes, late at night before a big project, cramming to get something put together, and fast. Probably because I was up too late catching my favorite shows. Who knows, maybe if I had the internet back then, I wouldn't have broken out so much from the stress.

I'm
not quite sure why this episode it titled the way it is, as most of it
dealt with the "Compact Compact" myth. I know, I know. I messed up last
week's episode, titled "Confederate Rocket", which was actually a very
cool episode to watch (I believe they called the myth plausible, or at
least it seemed that way).
