Phil Harris, the Captain from 'Deadliest Catch,' Passes Away

phil_harris_deadliest_catchThere's nothing more shocking than real reality. Death is real. Steve Irwin dying on the job, for instance, was a huge shock. Here's another dose of harsh reality. The star of Discovery Channel's 'Deadliest Catch,' Phil Harris, has died from a stroke. He had been at work on January 29, loading a catch like usual, when he suffered the stroke. After being flown to Anchorage for treatment, he succumbed despite having shown some improvement.

In a statement on the Discovery Channel web site, his grown children, Jake and Josh, explained, "It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad -- Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down."

A 'Laverne and Shirley' Remake for the Big Screen?

laverne_and_shirley_bowlingSchlemiel! Schlimazel! Are you ready to see America's most beloved Milwaukee girls on the make on the big screen? According to director Garry Marshall, creator of 'Happy Days,' he has hopes to put the spinoff from that show, the successful 'Laverne & Shirley' to the movies. As with all the other hopes for silver screen adaptations, this one comes with some fanciful casting attached, too.

Garry was on 'Extra' promoting his new romantic comedy 'Valentine's Day' and revealed the 'Laverne & Shirley' dream casting: Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel. That's right. This pair of Shotz Brewery factory employees -- who live in a basement apartment in 1960 Milwaukee and struggle to find the men of their dreams -- would be played by two of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Is that a cynical way of looking at it? Yes, it is.

Second Season of 'Jersey Shore' Might Be Shot in South Beach

Jersey ShoreIsn't it funny how fast 'Jersey Shore' became a hit show and part of pop culture? When it first started it didn't seem like it would be much, just another reality show with young people with abs of various definitions living in a house together, dating, going out, arguing, and all that. But now you can talk to an 18 year-old or a 40 year-old and they'll probably both know who Snooki and The Situation are.

Now Movieline is reporting that the second season is probably going to be filmed in South Beach. There have been a lot of rumors swirling that the next season will be set somewhere else, perhaps The Hamptons or some place warm. Now it looks like a done deal that the show will film in Miami (though sorry, I don't see a crossover with 'Burn Notice' coming anytime soon - at least I hope not).

Is this a good idea, or is the Jersey Shore an important part of the show? MTV is probably going for "Jersey people try to fit in with South Beach people" controversy.

'The Biggest Loser' - 'Week Six' Recap

O'Neal and Sunshine Hampton, 'The Biggest Loser 9'(S09E06) In honor of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, so conveniently on NBC as well, the contestants of 'The Biggest Loser' got to spend their week working out with the world-class athletes at the Olympic training center in Colorado. The vacation, along with the higher altitude, impacted how their bodies reacted to their workouts, leading to smaller numbers on the scale, and one startling result.

To make matters worse, Alison informed them they would not only be competing this week as individuals, instead of teams, but that two of them would be sent home. It was the return of the dreaded red line. The contestant falling below that would be eliminated immediately. The next two lowest percentages of weight loss would fall below the yellow line and one of them would be going home. But even that process wasn't quite as expected.

'Big Bang' Bazinga! Could Sheldon Be Gay?

big_bang_theory_jim_parsonsAs his 'Star Trek' hero Mr. Spock might say, this is 'fascinating.' When Chuck Lorre was asked to define Sheldon Cooper's sexual orientation on 'The Big Bang Theory,' his answer wasn't gay. It wasn't straight. Not even asexual or nonsexual or unsexual. Lorre settled on the term 'other,' for Sheldon.

Lorre told Michael Ausiello in Entertainment Weekly that Sheldon's focus is not on the physical; it's on physics. And when Ausiello asked 'Big Bang Theory' star Jim Parsons what he thought, Parsons said that the object of Sheldon's affection would be the Nobel Prize, not another human being. Hearing the word that Dr. Sheldon Cooper has been awarded the Nobel Prize in theoretical physics would be Sheldon's turn on. "That's the warm embrace that he longs for," said Jim.

You Must Watch This: Mike Tyson on Italian 'Dancing With The Stars'

mike tyson dancing with the stars
There is a clip making the rounds right now of Mike Tyson competing on the Italian version of 'Dancing With the Stars', and, wow. It's the most fascinating thing I've seen on the internet all week. Obviously the show is in Italian, but there's a fair amount of English spread throughout the clip: the host says, "congratulations, that was great!" and the song that Tyson dances to is 'Save the Last Dance For Me' sung in English by an Italian speaker, which bears interesting results.

They show the judging process, for which Tyson gets one of those cool translating earpieces like they use at the U.N. Having watched Tyson's performance and then the judging, you can learn a lot about the Italian iteration of this show vs. the American one. Namely that it's a lot easier to get a high score in Italy. One of the judges actually held up his "10" paddle along with his "0" paddle, giving Tyson a "100." Something tells me that he wouldn't have fared so well over in the states.

'White Collar' - 'Home Invasion' Recap

White Collar
(S01E11) "You turned Fed?" - Alex
"I was force Fed." - Neal

I'm happy to see Diahann Carroll with a larger role in 'White Collar.' I don't know if it's going to be a regular thing (probably not), but there were many episodes where we either didn't see her at all or in just a quick cameo, so having her actually be part of the case (such as last week with Neal helping her in the case involving a relative) is welcome.

'Lost' - 'What Kate Does' Recap

Evangeline Lilly as Kate Austen on ABC's 'Lost.'
(S06E03) "It's the Others, dude. They caught us ... again." - Hurley

As 'What Kate Does' unfolded, I couldn't help but shake the feeling that everything we're witnessing in the "post-Jughead worked" 2004 time-line is going to end up being very important. Of course, that could have been due to the fact that in this past week's Official 'Lost' Audio Podcast, Cuse and Lindelof essentially laid it bare for us -- there is no alternate reality happening here. What's going on in LA in 2004 and what's going on in 2007 on the island are both very real.

The question to ask is what effect actions in one time-line will have on the events in the other. As far as 'Lost' mindf#%ks go, this one is a doozie, because it's forced us to reevaluate everything we remember about these characters, right back to the pilot episode.

'NCIS' - 'Jack Knife' Recap

NCIS; Mark Harmon; Jethro; CBS
(S07E15)
Interesting episode of 'NCIS,' one that was somewhat fun, somewhat lighthearted, and even a little playful. Of course, there was still a dead body, and a chance for Gibbs to interact with an old adversary. We're a few weeks out from the Paris trip, but Tony and Ziva remain as cagey as ever about what happened... if anything happened at all in that hotel room. More on that and the 1971 Plymouth Barricuda hemi after the jump.

'American Idol' - 'Hollywood Round One' Recap

american idol judges
(S09E10) ELLEN! I've been waiting for this. I've been a huge Ellen DeGeneres fan for years, so I was psyched to hear she was going to be a judge this year. A lot of people are worried that she'll rely too heavily on the comedy, so tonight is a big night; we finally get to see how she does.

It's also a big night because it's the beginning of Hollywood week. I always feel terrible for the people who get sent home, but I'm trying to remember this: at least they got a sweet free trip to Hollywood. That's something, right? All in all, it's a pretty good group of people, but there are several who just completely biff their auditions. How does that happen? It's a mystery for the ages. Let's ponder it together, shall we?
