Review: 'House' - '5 to 9'

(S06E14) "You can do it." - Cuddy
I get the reason for making an episode like '5 to 9.' Long running show that's popular. Established characters and story structure. The desire for David Shore, Katie Jacobs, and the rest of the 'House' crew to try something different is to be expected. However, that doesn't mean they should have done it. '5 to 9' wasn't a bad episode (in many ways, it felt like a back-door pilot for Cuddy), but it was, in a word, pointless. At the end of the day, '5 to 9' doesn't really add anything to the world of 'House,' and its outside-the-box attempt at being different just ended up being forgettable.
'House' has been on for six seasons now, and the key to that is something I already mentioned -- these characters are established and then some. There has never once been a moment where the goings-on in a day in Lisa Cuddy's life seemed foreign. We know them intimately. So to then see an hour of 'House' from her perspective, on a day where the stakes were ratcheted so high that it became comical, almost felt surreal. It was too perfect storm-ish. But in that sense, it had to be or why bother telling this story at all?
We know House annoys the hell out of her. We know the hospital board is always breathing down her neck. We know that being a single mother and dealing with Lucas (who might as well be House's manchild baby brother) has turned her home life into a circus sideshow. We know her life is stressful period.
So what didn't we know? Well, turns out that Cuddy can play hardball just as well as House. She finally got the insurance company to cover more costs, and she completely fooled the pharmacy tech who had been stealing drugs for her husband's meth lab when she recorded their conversation for the DEA. Cuddy definitely has a bitch switch when she needs it.
Unfortunately, though, none of that made up for the fact that House and his team had a far more interesting case going on (this, too, was perhaps over the top for extra punch). Regardless, the guy was covered in boils! House wanted to treat him with malaria and just when he had his "ah ha!" moment, the elevator door closed! The real opportunity was lost when not one second of this intimate look into Cuddy's life explored any of the feelings she has deep down for House.
But even House seemed to realize that he wasn't part of this episode since he spent some of it getting a massage from a tall blonde masseuse. I hope this doesn't became habit, though. Not the massages -- House can keep getting those. I mean the plot. Just thinking about a day in the life of Foreman makes me cringe.

Yup. Review is spot on. I can see why they did it and it wasn't a bad ep, but it was forgettable.

Seems that the creators of the series are trying to incorporate the others cast members this season. Take some of the focus away from House. Perhaps this could be to help Hugh Laurie. Not so much lines/screen time means not so many days away from his family. Not constantly having to fake that limp. Two big things that he had been having issue with of late. The long hours away from his family and constantly having to fake that limp has actually been giving him real pain. Could be the behind the scenes team are just trying to make Hugh happy by lightening his load a bit. As well as giving the supporting characters on the show something to do to earn thier time on set and thier paychecks. I don't think "House" will ever fully take the focus off of House the man.

List of good shows that were killed(suicide if you will) in the past 2 years:
Grey's Anatomy
Heroes
24
House
Weeds
Community
-Suck it writers and showrunners.
The one show that should have imploded and still might, but has been getting better every episode since halfway through its 3rd Season: Lost

Honestly, nobody cares about a list of shows you don't like anymore. Personally I think House has held pretty strong, though it has declined a bit and Heroes had it's best season in years. Also, the only reason anyone watches lost is to find out what the hell had actually been happening because the show hasn't made sense since Day 1.

Good review. The one on this blog, not so much.

As the writer of the House reviews at Give Me My Remote, I am flattered that you linked to the post. I'd love to read more of your thoughts in our discussion thread.

Boy are the preceeding comments harsh. Why can't we all just agree to disagree? Personally I have always liked 'House". The show's had its good years and not too good but, IMHO, this one is OK so far.
Did I NEED this episode? NOPE but it was more informative than the reviewer thought it was.
Yes, we know Cuddy has a tough job and a tough personal life but I disagree in how much was revealed about she and House. She looked to him for his answers and reveled in some memories they shared.
Cuddy and Lucas are going nowhere. He's such a good guy but he can never be the bastard Cuddy needs to back her up in her 'bitch' moments like House can.
Cuddy certainly trusted House more than she did any other character tonght.
BTW, I hated 'Lost' in it's first year but have been a loyal fan all five years. Can't we let it go and admit that 'to each his own' is a good dictum for TV?

Wow I could not disagree more.
What everyone seems to have missed is that by _showing_ us the details of a harrowing, frenetic day in the life of Lisa Cuddy, they manage to turn House back into a monster without the use of drugs. Now every time he waste her time or tortures her, anyone with memory and compassion will be remembering this episode and seeing House for the selfish bastard he can very often be. And there's no Vicodin to blame. It's just House.
Best of both worlds with this; we get to see House humanized and growing as a person (albeit slowly) but we also get to hate him a little for how he tortures this woman because now we've _actually_ experienced what her days are like.
As for not exploring her feelings for House...uhh.... Well. Dry. We're sick of the 'ship, at least I am. I like the fact that she didn't waste one minute on it. She's in a relationship, under stress to the nth degree and has her baby. Or babies, if you count the fully-grown one she has at work.
It's good to see her dealing with what is and not what was almost or may never be. That is how actual people actually survive their stressful lives.
Also, shadowracer? You and Tim Kring are maybe the only two people in the world that think Heroes had a good season. Even he's not really sold on it, by all reports.
It's worse than that. It's dead, Jim. Dead, Jim. Dead, Jim. Dead. /demento

I agree with you 100%. I loved this episode for the very same reason. It shows us house can well still be house no matter what and it shows us just how far his actions go and whom they affect.

I was actually going to erase this ep. off my DVR within the first few minutes even b4 the credits. I wish I had. I am not a fan of Cuddy and wish they would stick to sick people and how House "cures" them. I like Lucas, but he and Cuddy are boring together. The only redeeming part of the show was the sociopath who manipulated Cuddy so well at first then flipped to blackmail.

I could not disagree more with this review. Although I felt that this episode was missing the entertainment factor of most house episodes, it replaced it with drama. It took a little while to get used to the change, but about a third of the way through the episode I had made the switch and was enjoying this episode. I think not showing House's "Ah Ha" moment was great, it showed that he wasn't the focus this episode. You watch all these medical drama's where you see the point of view of the patients, the nurses, the doctors, the relations of the patients/doctors/nurses. It was really nice to see an episode focusing on the administration for a change. I enjoyed this episode and appreciate this show being willing to experiment with it's formula.
You enjoyed the house season premiere yet you aren't willing to give this episode the same chance it seems. Maybe you are just not able to associate with Cuddy as much as you were/are with House.

I disagree with this review also, I think this was a welcomed escape from the normal patient-du-jour and subsequent epiphany formula that can become mundane in my opinion.
I like the fact that they're experimenting that way this season, and giving us House breaks with both Wilson and Cuddy-centric episodes. Would I want to see a Foreman-centric (or any of the others) episode? NO. But I thought these two non-House-centric episodes were quite good. (For one reason, they make me appreciate House, as a show about House, all the more - basically I wouldn't watch a spin off called Cuddy!)
And although I wish we learned something new from the episode, I do think it gave a deeper insight to her character, which I personally enjoy seeing.

Loved this ep.
Not every show has to be advancing the main story line of a show.
Similarly, not every viewer wants epic storylines that stretch across the entire season.
Character development is great and it's great to have episodes like this.

I'm with what's probably the majority here. I loved the episode!
Sure it's not vitally important that we have a peek into Cuddy's life, but her struggles as a hospital administrator are far from forgettable. Sad to say, but the other episodes of House MD this season, with the exception of the opening 2 parter and the Wilson centric episode (and some snippets of the Chase-Cameron fiasco, but I honestly can't remember anything about the individual episodes, aside from Dibala's (sp) with even that complicated story arc), are the TRUE forgettable eps this season.
Seeing Cuddy having to deal with being a mother, trying to wrangle out what's fair for her hospital for insurance, attempt to appease angered patients, keep dissent at bay among her surgeons (dissent caused by House, of all people), and dealing with a drug smuggler was extremely satisfying, if only because we normally don't get to see her as anything more than House's forlorn love or the straight (wo)man to his antics.
I do think that it would have been more interesting, in a way, if we saw a more "mundane" day in her life instead of one filled with so much intensity. I'm sure as an administrator, though, her days would be mostly paper work and boring bored meetings between House approaching her for some insane treatment for the POTW, so I guess that wouldn't have been feasible.
The only thing I didn't really like was something I haven't liked since last season- Lucas. The character started out amusing and charming, but his relationship with Cuddy is still ridiculous, and now he seems much more like a useless douche.

As usual I loved the episode, I liked seeing Cuddy show some balls and prove that a woman can be smart, successful and be a mom (with a sick child) all in the same day. I don't like Lucas he is not a good partner in any sense of the word. I agree that every episode should not
be about house, and whatever it takes to keep Hugh Laurie on my tv I am for. As to the other shows mentioned, I only watch House, The Good Wife, and Men of a Certain Age, so I can not comment, but if you don't like House, sorry

Comments of '5 to 9': I like the Cuddy character in this series, but episodes with less of HOUSE is just plain BAD!! More of HOUSE is always GOOD! His character is the show!
They used that Hispanic assistant of Cuddy's in soooo many scenes...it made my head spin! Are the producers of the show planning a new series based upon her character?? And the actress playing Gail, the pharmacy-tech...was dreadfully bad actor...was she laughing or crying in that scene with Cuddy?
Finally, this LUCAS character is absoulutely unbearable! He's not working for the show...PERIOD! He has all the charm, appearance, and sexual appeal as a Nebhish-looking Gilbert Godfreid, without his humor, of course, in his intimate scences with his love interest Cuddy.
Listen up Producers....Enough is enough...his character is totally annoying. Get rid of him and his character! I can't believe some producer even suggested parlaying his character into another series! Totally Freaking Ridiculous!!

I dunno. A "Day in the Life" of Thirteen could be fun. Especially if it includes more hot lingerie makeouts with her anonymous lesbian hookups. I'd watch.
