Trista Sutter Talks to Inside TV About Staying Together With Ryan
by Nicholas White, posted Dec 16th 2009 7:29PM
As another 'Bachelor' contestant found love this week (when Melissa Rycroft got married) off the TV show, it was a reminder of how tough finding love on reality TV can be. The most famous example of longevity is the six-year marriage of Ryan and Trista Sutter, who met on ABC's 'The Bachelorette' in 2002. While many other reality romances have perished (with a few notable exceptions), the Sutters, who have two kids, Max, 2, and Blakesley, 8 months, are still together, living in Colorado.
While the couple keeps its distance from the glaring lights of Hollywood, Trista caught up with Inside TV at Tuesday's JCPenney "Joy of Giving" party in West Hollywood, and talked about how she and Ryan keep their marriage solid, the "hard work" behind it, and building a house.

How are you liking being a mom?
Everyday, I love walking in and seeing my baby girl smiling from ear to ear for me in the morning. I love getting hugs. Not that I ever want my child to hurt, but if Max is like, 'Mommy, mommy,' just knowing that I can be that person for him and be there for him, it's the absolute best thing that has ever happened to me.
What kind of dad is Ryan?
So much fun. He is so excited for Blakesley, our youngest, to be able to play like Max is. Because he wants to get down and dirty with her. He wants to be able to take her out in the snow, and teach her how to go sledding, build snowmen, and go skiing. He is so much fun and always really lively with them. Also calming. Blakesley was crying, and he was trying to soothe her and be there for her.
Being the most famous reality couple still together, what is your secret?
I think it's a mixture of the fact that I think really somebody is watching over us. Maybe not fact, but I believe that. We are committed to each other, we love each other. We like each other. We trust each other and respect each other. All the things you need in a marriage, I think that we possess. Not to say the other people wouldn't possess that. But for some reason, I think we were just meant to be together, and it happened.
Have those feelings changed?
No, no, I don't think so. I feel like we have always been made for each other. We work hard at it. Marriage is not an easy thing, you have to work at it. We have a relationship like everyone else, we have our bad days, we have our great days. It would be nice if it was all rainbows and sunshine, but it's not all the time. Some days it's cloudy. We roll with it. We just celebrated our sixth year anniversary, so I think we are doing something right.
How did you spend your six-year anniversary?
We actually got a babysitter, which we never do: Max's teacher at school. It's just a two-day toddler program. She came over and had story time for the kids. We went out and just went to dinner and a movie. It was fabulous.
Doing 'The Bachelor' or 'The Bachelorette' this year?
No, not that I know of. If they approach us, yeah. And if it fits in with our schedule, and if we want to be a part of it, then yeah. But they haven't approached us.
TV or movies coming up?
Movies, no. I'm so not an actress. Unless I was playing myself for some reason. TV, there is potential .You never say never, but I can assure you that you won't see a 24/7 reality show about our lives. We are actually going to be building a home soon. It's on our website, Vail Green Home. We are trying to do something with television, sort of like a documentary. Something like [Discovery] or TLC. Who knows -- if not there, maybe AOL? Something to show people that you can actually build a great home without spending a fortune. They can see a little bit of our lives, but not a 24/7 'Jon and Kate +8.'

Hmm..she got pregnant with his baby, then likely threatened him within an inch of his life if he so much as looked at another woman.....'ya know, just like your average marriage. Just another reason to stay single.

I'm not sure you can say "every marriage" - my hubby and I lead a happy, sex filled marriage and I often point out beautiful women to him. We are strictly one-one in case you'll try and say we're swinger or some bs! I love my husband more today then I did when we met almost 16 years ago.

DO THE MATH! They've been married 6 yrs. Their oldest child is 2. No threats about marriage because of pregnancy. Yes, please stay single. Keep you out of the gene pool.

I think u have ur people mixed up, ur probably thinking of Jon & Kate....lol
Ryan Sutter does NOT come off as a wimp, he's a man who takes his family very seriously & Trista does not appear to be aggressive. What gives u the idea that she is?
They come off as an All American Family who loves their children. Nothing wrong with that, it's a good thing:-)

From the TV show Trista seemed like a strong woman with a lot of personality. Ryan seemed to be a guy that knew what he wanted and made it happen. Now that he has what he wanted he seems man enough to both nurture his wife AND give Trista the room she needs to be herself. If that's so, then they are blessed to have one another.
It also sounds like their children are fortunate to have what appear to be very loving and involved parents. Hope they continue with the 'reruns' of their successful life together.

Don't be haters you guys! Ryan doesn't have to be an overly aggressive man to be strong man. People handle themselves differently. She is a strong social woman, he is more quiet but assertive, strong man. He has to be a strong man to be a provider, husband, and father. They are just like every other couple who are are married trying to balance the life of a good marriage, and having a family, with work. They are a great example of someone putting family first over being a celebrity in the spotlight. I applaud you guys any marriage is difficult with younger kids ecspecially! So congratulations on your anniversary and know that your efforts and time with your kids will show when they are great adults!

i realize we live in a "wierd" world. but why is it impossible to have a loving, nurturing marriage, without people accusing one of them as controlling, and the other "A WHIMP"! come on people - wake up. these thoughts are what is wrong with our world . God bless their marriage and their children. what a wonderful world the Sutters live in!!!!! merry christmas to all. and please remember what christmas is all about. we'll all be better for it.

To Rick, please give me a break. Those two people are definitely in love with one another. You obviously have never been totally in love with another person. Get a life.

If Trista really loves Ryan for the man he is, and he is a great father for his children, he is already twice the man any of you hater losers could be.

I think in these times that most married couples don't even try to make their marriage work. GOOD WORK TO KRISTA AND RYAN. YOU 'VE MADE YOUR MARRIAGE A BLESSING WITH 2 CHILDREN AND 6 YEARS OF HAPPINESS AS WE ALL CAN SEE. MORE COUPLES OUGHT TO TRY OUT FOR HAPPINESS. MARRIAGE DOES HAVE IT'S UPS AND DOWNS, BUT YOU DO HOVE TO TRY. GOD BLESS TRISTA AND RYAN.

I will never understand some people. Here is a couple...who has been married for over 6 years now....and whom seem to be very much in love. Why
do they have to have all of these negative comments??? There are couples that have been married for 75+ years!!! Do you know the reason
why?? Because they love each other....and respect
each other....there doesn't have to be just one
major overwhelming man to run the family. Marriage is not even a true 50 - 50 proposition.
Yes...that is how it should be....BUT with the realization that somedays....it will be 99% to 1%....and vice versa. Ryan is a fireman. He is
100% all man....and someone who lays his life on the line everyday that he goes to work....just like Law Enforcement individuals. Ryan and Trista
simply seem like a very well adjusted couple, who
live their lives outside of the irresponsible media hounds that want to try and "get the dirt"
on anyone that they can. They obviously love each
other....they obviously love their kids....and they believe in a higher power....that brought them together....and there is absolutely nothing
in the WHOLE world wrong with that. Nor is there
anything wrong with Ryan being a sensitive, but
strong man....who is not afraid to show his emotions....unlike 99% of most of the world's men, and their is nothing wrong with Trista being
an outgoing vibrant woman. I think that the people who come out with all of these negative
comments are apparently very uncomfortable with
their own lives and marriages. If these people
would grow up and act like adults....then they
too....might find love and happiness.
Congratulations Trista and Ryan!! Your kids are
adorable....and may you have another 60+ years of
love and happiness....you each deserve it!!!
