Review: Monk - Mr. Monk and the End (Part 2) (series finale)

(S08E16) The pressure of writing the last episode must be tremendous. Especially for a long-running show like Monk. The writers have to tie up loose ends, satisfy viewers' desire for the characters, and leave fans with a sense of closure. Closure, in fact, is the word Dr. Bell used with Adrian. Monk was looking for it and so were we.
But the ending is tough. There have been some shows that have stumbled badly at the end. Seinfeld, for instance, was a real stinker. But the memory of Newhart, which harkened back to The Bob Newhart Show may be the best-ever. Now, in the broader scheme of things, Seinfeld was a much better series than Newhart; in every way but the ending. Which brings us back to Monk. How did the writers navigate the Monk finale? Follow me after the jump and I'll tell you all about it.
As Larry David might say on Curb Your Enthusiasm, "Pretty, pretty good." The Monk finale was pretty, pretty good. It delivered closure, all right. The mystery of Trudy's murder was finally wrapped up. It was Judge Rickover, an ex-lover of Trudy's from her college days. He'd become a prominent judge twelve years later when he killed Trudy to keep secret that they'd had an affair that resulted in a child. Rickover had the midwife killed, too.
When Adrian figured it out and confronted the judge in the rain, holding a gun on him and forcing him to dig up the proof -- the midwife's body -- the drama was tense. Would Monk pull the trigger? He could have. Monk thought he was dying, but he didn't. Ultimately, Monk's vengeance was greater because he shamed the judge by telling him that he had killed three people -- the doctor, too -- all for a job. A job!
Shamed and knowing the jig was up, the judge took the pistol and killed himself. Craig T. Nelson very good in this role, the perfect foil because he can play smug, overconfident jerks like this guy. When Monk tried to sock him for insulting Trudy, you could relate.
It was great that it was Natalie who figured out about the wipes being poisoned; it showed that in all her time with Monk, she'd learned a thing or two. But curing Monk and solving Trudy's murder wasn't enough. Something was missing.
Think about how Monk watched Trudy's tape. Monk agonized listening to each sentence, and practically climbed into the TV set. When Trudy said, "You are my life," it was the same words Monk had for her.
"Take care of her," were the words the Judge said before he died, and even when Dr. Bell advised Adrian to let it go, it was a loose end. Monk had closure, but he still felt empty. There was a last mystery to solve connected to Trudy.
Molly. Trudy never knew her child had survived. Monk's meeting with her, a beautiful 26-year-old woman who resembled Trudy in many ways, was an emotional wallow. Adrian couldn't stop crying, and fortunately for him, Molly embraced him like he was a long lost relative. He was sort of. And like a proud new papa, Monk went overboard getting her to fill up his life.
The last scenes of the series were to tie things up with ribbons. Randy resigned to move to New Jersey and become the chief of police in Summit where he and Sharona would live happily ever after. Monk, who had contemplated adhering himself to Molly and adoring her 24/7, returned to his work as a detective when surrogate daughter told him he must. Speaking words that remind Monk of Trudy, Molly told Adrian that he had a gift and had to use it.
So as we heard a new song by Randy Newman -- "I Think You're Going to Miss Me When I'm Gone" -- Monk got called onto a new case with Natalie by his side. Leland was there and the game was afoot. Holmes and Watson on the case.
Other points of interest
-- How tight are Leland and Adrian? Leland promised Monk that he would kill the judge when Adrian couldn't get out of the hospital. Leland agreed to no trial, but Monk knew he was lying.
-- Even sick out of his mind, Monk realized there was something weird about the judge being so attached to that modest house. The sundial under a tree was the inconsistency that triggered Monk solving the murder.
-- Monk was finally able to sleep in the middle of the bed. Trudy's dream had been a premonition, and a message. He was finally happy again. Trudy was back in his life in the form of Molly.
-- Back on the job, Monk was no long buttoned up to the top button. Instead, he wore a pullover sweater under his jacket. It was in between the buttoned up Monk and the cop Monk with a tie.
-- Ending with Leland, Adrian and Natalie all going to a crime scene leaves open the possibility of future Monk reunion movies.
-- Great work by Tony Shalhoub in both parts of this finale. He really brought Monk full circle.
Great dialogue
-- Judge Rickover: "You're going to kill a federal judge?"
Monk: "Tonight, I'm the judge."
-- "I hate the great unknown."
-- Natalie to Monk: "Trudy sent you a gift. She sent you someone to love. It's what you've been missing."
-- Monk gushing about Molly: "You know the Internet? She's on it."

Why do people still bitch about how Seinfeld ended? That was the point of the whole show/series and ended as such geez.

People bitch about Seinfeld because it was unfunny and lame.

I thought this finale was phenomenal. The actress picked to play Trudy's daughter's been in a number of things and done well so if they ever do go the movie route she'd be nice to have in it. I was/am a huge Monk fan and am a bit sad to see it go but this was a fantastic way to do it.

I am soo disappointed in the Finale.
I don't know if you have watched and re watched all episodes of Monk. This was a lame ending.
After a long standing well loved series..they should have made it 2 hours so that farewells could have been cherished.
I am soo sad Monk is gone.

Wow! Monk is over I can't believe it. OK who was the woman Leland kissed good-bye at the end on his way to the crime scene? Did he get back with his wife? I remembered the divorced. Or was it T.K. who's real name is Trudy, the woman he met on the recent episode about Mr. Monk's Birthday Party? It did look like her but I can't be sure. Anybody for certain?

You must have missed an important recent episode. TK and Leland got married, so yes, that was definately TK.

Monk is/was my favorite character. I cried and cried during the last half hour. I will miss him.

Clearly the judge was not a federal judge, but a state judge. That's the only factual error/goof I caught in the episode. TV writers have a bad habit of adding "federal" to words like "judge" and "prison" because it makes it sound more serious, even when all the facts dictate that it is not federal but state.
I guess if you're not a lawyer, stuff like this doesn't really bug you or even catch your attention.
Anyway, I was kinda hoping they'd kill off Adrian - it made sense since it was established he would/could not be a police detective ever again. But I'm happy with this ending. It was resolved so soon - at the 35 minute point in the hour long episode - that I felt it was going to be a dream or something, basically an homage to Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." Then it became clear they were using the remaining 15 or so minutes of showtime to wrap up other loose ends with Monk and the other characters.
Good episode. Far better than I expected and far better than any other episode this season, which was all a huge disappointment.

The fact he was nomintated to the state supreme court pretty handidly obviated the state vs. federal distinction.

Bruce, you're definitely right about the federal thing. City cops would not go to a federal judge to get a search warrant signed. Only FBI, DEA agents, etc., would deal with a federal judge for a warrant. And the fact that he was nominated for the state supreme court doesn't mean anything. He still said he was CURRENTLY a federal judge, which just doesn't fit. As you said, writers always do that, because they're ignorant. In "Analyze This," Robert DeNiro's character, Paul Vitti, is going into Sing Sing, which is a state prison, and Billy Crystal's character calls it "federal prison." It's stupid.

It was a good ending but felt rushed. I didn't care for the casting of Monk's late wife Trudy - kept waiting for Michael Scott to show up - not to mention she's like the third or fourth actress to portray her.
I felt that the reason for the murders didn't make sense and was forced - and the fact that Monk did seem to care that Trudy's daughter was fathered by the man that murdered his wife.
Beyond that - I enjoyed the sentimentally and the reassurance that life for the characters will go on much as they always did.
Give it a few years - they'll be a series of Monk made for TV movies.

I don't know I thought the whole season was kind of weak, but I like the way it ended. I actually teared up a bit during the montage. It was nice to see Monk make progress by wearing a different shirt and going to the movies, but it was also nice that they didn't over do it. The reference to the first episode's "stove" debacle was funny too.
I was also happy to see Natalie and Leland stick around. I was a little concerned that Leland was going to end up retiring and Natalie was going to go live with her boyfriend, which would have taken away all of Monk's support.
All-in-all I thought the episode was dramatic, sweet and a little funny - all the qualities that made me start watching the show in the first place.

This is one of my favorite show and I was really disappointed with the ending. I mean our main protagonist, Adrian Monk never moved on with his life. Captain and Randy gets the girl. Even Natalie managed to get a new boyfriend but Mr. Monk? He gets to hang out with his wife's once presumed dead child? A child she had with her murderer? How is this moving on for Mr. Monk? He's been single for twelve years! Why couldn't they just let him end up with the the eastern European woman from last season from "Mr. Monk Falls in Love"? So everyone gets a happy ending but our Adrian Monk? I'm going to watch reruns of the show but never will I watch the finale again. Although the the ending was a huge disappointment for me, Monk will always be one of the best shows that has ever aired on TV.

A happy ending doesn't have to automatically have to mean a romantic ending.

Adrian never wants anyone but Trudy. With Molly, he has a bit of Trudy still around.
If you're such a big fan of the show, and of Monk, and have seen how miserable he has been for the entire series, how could you not see the HAPPINESS in him during those final 15 minutes.
The way they wrote the finale, I believe that Monk got the happiest ending of all. After 12 years of agonizing over who killed his wife, and dealing with life without her, he was able to both solve her murder AND discover she had a daughter that he could love. Just because it's not "romantic" love doesn't mean it isn't the happiest, greatest thing in the world to him.
The finale was phenomenal. I've been a fan for years, and even though I watched faithfully every Friday, I've found the last couple years a little stale and grating (still better than a lot of shows on TV, mind you). However, the finale was absolutely superb. Well-written, emotional (all kinds of emotions, too -- seeing Adrian pound on Craig T. Nelson, I could FEEL the anger he had), and still a bit funny.

When you have loved like Monk, only one will do. I could not see him moving on as far as another woman, I know I couldn't.

One point of confusion, I thought Adrian & Trudy met in college and fell in love with no turning back. There was an episode where they met in the library.
So that makes her having an affair in law school seem totally out of character...it was definitely something he would already know about.
Like the person above, it also occured to me that a visit from Joanna Pacula would make sense after the episode in which he clearly was smitten.
Remember the Trudy double episode? What if Trudy had amnesia and never died? That would have made him really happy if she suddenly remembered and returned to him.
I'm also surprised his "DOA" style expected death didn't lure his brother out of the house to make an appearance.
As long as Sharona was on recently, why not have her and Benji show up here?
After all the neat holiday episodes, why not have that theme echo here? With everyone anticipating a new life in the new year...would have been nice.
I liked Molly, would have liked her better if she was secretly Adrian's and born at a time when they weren't ready or whatever...
So many possibilities...

I hadn't been a regular view for a few seasons but I am so glad circumstances had me home to watch the two parts tonight.
I was reminded why I first fell in love with Tony when he was "Antonio" on "Wings". He has a way of letting the soul of humanity speak with only his face. When he met his wife's daughter face to face his tears shot out of his eyes like bullets and I just felt like I was experiencing all the best of humanity in the moments he brought to the screen with his collapse into her embrace.
He is just so so so loveable. That face!

The one thing that didn't ring true was the judge saying "Take care of her." Why would he say that? She didn't seem to need taking care of.

I enjoyed it very much and felt that they stayed true to the show and characters. I didn't expect or think a huge change in Monk's character would be appropriate and so this worked the balance well. If you consider it, the last 3-4 eps have been working to closure - Sharona coming back and reigniting old flames with Randy, Monk getting his badge back but realizing it isn't what he wants, Leland finding his Trudy, Natalie finding love, so this felt good - the right balance was struck.
