The other night, USA Network broadcast part one of the Monk finale. In that next to last episode, many storylines were presented for the possible big finish this upcoming week. And it could be a potentially whopper of an ending. In my review, I speculated a little about what may be coming, and the comments have been flying in to TV Squad with viewers sharing their thoughts. That's got me thinking... what else might be at play?Tony Shalhoub was interviewed about the end of Monk and it was interesting that as an actor, he waited till he filmed the end before learning Monk's fate. He said, "I think it's a good send-off. At the beginning of the season, the writers asked me if I wanted to know how everything [ended] and I said, if it was okay with them, I'd rather wait."
If you would rather wait, too, don't read below because I'm going to postulate a couple of ideas about what we saw on Friday and what might be coming. These aren't spoilers, because I don't know. However, if I stumble upon the right answer, I wouldn't want to be accused of spoiling it for you.
Okay, based on what Randy told Leland, the poison in Monk's body is lethal and it's too late to find an antidote. If that's true, Monk is like Edmund O'Brien in the movie D.O.A. (or Dennis Quaid in the remake of D.O.A.), and he's going to solve the murder before he dies. In Monk's case, he'll solve his own murder and Trudy's at the same time.
If Monk were to die like that, the fanciful finale could be that he and Trudy are reunited in the afterlife. Some readers think that's wholly appropriate. Some think that the producers wouldn't kill off Monk because they'd want to bring hm back for TV movies. Some just can't imagine Monk being killed.
My mind keeps going back to Trudy's tape to Monk. If Trudy knew she was in danger, if -- as the tape suggests -- she sent it to Adrian because she knew she was going to die, is it possible that Trudy's not really dead? Did she want him to believe that she was dead for his own protection?
Suppose she had uncovered information that was so explosive that she had to go into Witness Protection? Suppose she had to keep the information from Adrian to save his life? Or did she determine that she couldn't take him into Witness Protection with her because of his OCD? (By the way, if this were the case, it would be great to see Mary Shannon -- actress Mary McCormack -- from In Plain Sight as her WITSEC agent!)
What makes me think that Trudy's not really dead? Well, watch her run through the parking garage from the last episode. She has the keys in her hand, but then reaches into her purse for something else. Could she have had a device to signal someone else to create the "bomb" diversion? Also they showed the six-fingered man, but there was another man's head shown? Or it could have been the same guy, who knows?
Maybe all the evidence was manufactured to make it appear that Trudy was dead? The evidence would have to appear completely consistent with her death because not only did it have to convince Monk, it had to convince the judge who ordered her murder.
Do you think I'm nuts? What's your theory? Take the poll and feel free to comment.

I think Trudy is really dead, Craig T Nelson's character confessed to having murdered her (Coach did it!). They did a "trudy might be alive" episode a few seasons ago and it would be really lame to come back now and say she's been alive all this time.
Since Monk already knows he is too damaged to ever be a police officer again (he resigned after the first day on the job when he got his badge back after striving for it for over 12 years!), the best way to end the show is to put him out of his misery - but only after he gets resolution to Trudy's murder, and his own murder.
That would be an ideal ending to the show, but because modern-day fans are so whiny, emotional, and overly effeminate, I don't think the writers have the guts to actually kill off Monk. So here's what will happen: Monk will live long enough to solve Trudy's murder and in doing so, they will find the exact poison so they can give him the right antidote in time to save him. Long live Monk for future TV movies.

Monk didn`t give his badge back because he is damaged!!! He gave it back because the department was giving him stupid assignments and he worked with mean rude officers! Monk is a genius at solving crimes! He didn`t want to work on petty cases, he wanted to be on murder scenes. He missed being his own boss, he missed Natalie! Monk has grown over the passed eight years! Better watch that episode again!

Monk won't die. The poison is OBVIOUSLY in the wipes. I think they will figure it out in time.

I thought Randy implied that there was not enough time to reverse the poison by analyzing the components in the dead guy's hotel room, but if they could find the source then they'd be able to do something. Anyway, that's my guess: they'll discover it's in the wipes and Monk will survive to realize the reason that they wanted him dead links the birthing center doctor and Trudy and he'll solve both cases. His brush with death will be closure from his grieving and he'll be able to truly move on and enjoy life, as indicated by his speech to his therapist in part 1 about having wasted all that time being obsessive.

Well, don't forget that this not The Sopranos, it's basically a kids show, or if you prefer a Family show. I think it would be extremely out character for them to kill off Monk, even if it is the final episode.
They just aren't that clever or that daring on the show -- that's not an insult because they aren't aiming for it to be.

Just don't read the blurb about Monk in the Entertainment Weekly this week. It will tell you exactly how Monk ends. Argh.

Anna: no he gave his badge back after he almost got killed on the hanging scaffold high up on the side of the building. Yeah he didn't like having to start off at the bottom, but that was a given coming back to the force after 12 years and he understood that and accepted that. He realized that while he may have been able to handle the dangers of the job before Trudy died, he is no longer able to deal with those dangers now on a day to day basis. I found that very disappointing... that he'd give up on his dream job so quickly. All he's ever wanted is to get back on the force. The job didn't change - Monk did.

The poison was put in the wipes. They'll figure that out and eventually be able to determine exactly which strain it is and get the antidote.

I'm glad that you asked. I think that Trudy is alive and has been in the Witness Protection Program all this time. After they arrest the bad guy who was responsible for the bombing, she will be able to go home again and be with Monk. They will live happily ever after, or until USA does a Monk movie. Doesn't Monk deserve a happy ending?

happy endings are so frightfully dull.
it should end with him solving the murder and killing that governor (or whatever he was.)
then dying himself at trudys grave.
also i think randy's moving away.
he said he was gonna 'miss this' to lealand.
and he has the ticket.
its likely their going to try and separate the cast.
'monk dies after killing his wives killer,
lealand gets that crooked governors job,
randy moves away,
teager moves in with her boyfriend'
i think that would be the best ending.
but like someone said before.
this show isn't exactly known for pushing the boundaries.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the whole series didn't turn out to be a character's narrative therapy.

My guess?
Trudy's not dead, she's been in witness protection. The judge will turn out to be a good guy, who originally set-up Trudy entering the witness protection program. Monk being "poisoned" is actually a ruse to finally draw out the real killer. At first it will appear to have worked, but at the last minute he'll somehow escape. Monk and Trudy will have to go into witness protection, this time together, both 'dead' as far as the outside world knows (The writers get to have their cake and the fans get to eat it too :)).
The final scene will be Monk promising Trudy to swear off his OCD ways, but the closing shot will, of course, be something, dirty silverware, a crooked picture, pens on a desk, that Monk has "fixed."
I'm not a Monk fan, just watching the finale, so that's probably the biggest WAG you'll see on this. :)

I hope Trudy is alive. I hope Monk solves her "murder" and then they can be together. This isn't a logical ending based on past episodes that contained clues to her murder. For me, Monk is more than a mystery drama/comedy. There is always that true love story in the background. I want true love to prevail.

Of course we all know Trudy was put in witness protection and is now a single mom in Scranton, PA... it's just a question of how Monk will find out.

What's so offensive about having Monk die? Can you people not handle any sadness, even fake fictional TV sadness? Why are happy endings required for modern american audiences? Aside from it being a sad but very effective and meaningful way to wrap up the series, it also makes the names of the last two episodes ("Mr. Monk and the End") slightly less lame, as "the end" can refer to his life as well as the show.
At the end of the day, the only ending that would really piss me off would be an ambiguous "Sopranos" ending where we don't know whether Monk lives or dies. THAT would piss me off.
