(S01E06) "You're weird." - Little girl, to Peter
What, no Thanksgiving episode? They could have had a plot where Caffrey has to find a diamond that was hidden in the carcass of a frozen Butterball turkey in the local supermarket. Or maybe some secret microfilm hidden inside a giant bowl of yams covered in marshmallows. They did mention that Christmas was coming up, so they seem to be in the right time of year. They should have had some of the characters watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving or the Macy's Parade or something.
A question for all of the White Collar fans out there. Did Burke say that he was going to need Caffrey to learn how to play Pai Gow Poker or just Pai Gow? I thought he said Pai Gow Poker, which I believe (I could be wrong) is the American version of Pai Gow, played with cards and not with tiles. But when he went to the game, it was played with the tiles. At any rate, I thought this was kinda neat. They could have easily had Caffrey get involved in a high stakes, no-limit hold 'em poker game, but maybe they realized that was too 2006 and decided to go with something a little more exotic. It was a nice change of pace.
I know Caffrey is a con man, but at this point, Burke should just trust him. He could have escaped by now. Hell, in this episode the ankle monitor was actually taken off and he was given a wrist watch with a monitor that he could slip on and off easily (he did it when he went through the metal detector). At one point, Burke even called Caffrey his "partner" and Caffrey said with a surprised look, "We're partners?" Yeah, I'd say they are at this point.
I'm not sure if this episode needed yet another Kate connection, though. The undercover Interpol agent that was also on the investigation just happens to know who Caffrey is and knows where Kate can be found? But I did love her last words to Caffrey, about the person who has Kate: "He's FBI." And the pan around the FBI room at all of the characters. I wonder if it could be the boss (James Rebhorn) and he's either gone bad or is good and has Kate in hiding for some bigger reason? Next week is the fall finale of the show, and they promise a big twist.
More thoughts:
- If Caffrey and Burke had been caught and/or killed at the warehouse where they found the agent's body, it would have served them right. Why did they have to go there without backup? And why don't they use some sort of communication device and not just their cell phones, which can be screwed up by bad signals and drop outs and everything else? And shouldn't they give Caffrey a gun at this point, even if he doesn't like them? If he wanted to escape, he could, he wouldn't use the gun against them.
- Speaking of the dead agent, if you were looking for someone and you found them, wouldn't you at least give a cursory check of their pulse to see if maybe, just maybe, they were alive?
- It was fantastic to see Diahann Carroll again. Just two quick scenes, but she played these scenes well.

Neal is a convicted felon. There's no way anybody at the FBI would give him a gun. I agree about the director. Peter obviously is not who has Kate, and neither is Neal.

They said he was going to play Pai Gow, and then said it was like "chinese poker"

Am I the only one who got lost in this episode?
What was the point of losing the one hand? How did that indicate anything to the gangster? They also didn't set up him winning for a single shot... basically, he sat down, having said he had to win before losing, and we just see him go straight to a loss where he could've won...
And then? What did that do?
He was invited there, why did he need to get anyone's attention in the first place? And how does losing that way do that or convey anything other than "something's up with this guy"?
Also, what was the point with the money? I thought Interpol wanted to catch the criminal and thus get extra funding for China by capturing him there? Not that that made sense, but that's what was stated... then she gives up the criminal for the money... What was her game?
To me, it seemed like there was about 10 minutes of this episode written, shot, and left on the edit room floor.... but they were 10 important minutes... because this episode is like Chewbacca living on Endor, it makes no sense.

Neal got the invite because his alias was a big gambler. By losing a hand that would certainly have won, he signaled that he was looking for a money launderer. If you paid attention to the tiles he got after handing over his money, you'd know that they weren't the hand he folded.

Playing a losing the game was a sign that he was their for business.
His alias was known throughout the "criminal underworld" so put the word out and people want to work with you.
Not that hard to figure out.
