NBC chooses Brett Favre over Tom Brady

One of the perks NBC has over the other networks when it comes to its football coverage is what's called the flex schedule. Unlike CBS and Fox and ESPN which get the games that are scheduled months in advance without regard for ideal match ups, NBC has the option of plucking a better game for the Sunday Football Night in America broadcast. Hence the term, flex, as in flexible.

Thus far this season, NBC has had three chances to flip the switch and passed. However, on December 6, NBC has chosen a Vikings/Cardinals game over a Pats/Dolphins match.

That means if you were counting on hunkering down to watch Tom Brady tossing bombs to Randy Moss or Ricky Williams running over Pat defenders, forgeddaboutit. In place of Brady and Moss and Williams, NBC has chosen Brett Favre and Kurt Warner.

This makes perfect sense from NBC's point of view. Warner and the Cardinals are a high flying offense and were last year's Super Bowl. The Vikings are currently 9-1 and have Brett Favre. The last time a Brett Favre game bled into prime time -- November 1 on Fox, the Vikings vs. the Green Bay Packers -- nearly 40 million viewers were watching. That's Oscar numbers (in the good years). Or Super Bowl figures.

NBC would kill for that kind of viewership. So, Brett Favre is in and Tom Brady is... yesterday's news.

The Patriots/Dolphins game will be shown on CBS at in the afternoon, probably 1 p.m.

actually the dolphins have been struggling all season, even with chad pennington at qb...the loss of ronnie brown doesn't help their cause either

A potential Brett Favre-Kurt Warner matchup in prime time? I don't think it took NBC too long to make up their minds about this one.
