There's something a little unnerving about the fact that the Primetime Emmys float. Not the award statuette itself. No, that would be like an anchor in the water. I'm talking about the date for the Emmys. The 2010 Primetime Emmys will be on Sunday, August 29, on NBC. The 2009 Primetime Emmys, lest you forgot already, were September 20. The date of the Emmys floats around depending on which network is broadcasting the show. NBC has a steady date with the NFL on Sunday nights during football season. NBC Football Night in America in the network's top-rated show. The top. Number one. That means there's no way that the Peacock was going to give up a Sunday night game for the Primetime Emmy broadcast.
So, using their power, the network simply declared that the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards will be held in August. They pulled this same stunt in 2006, so the folks at NATAS (the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) weren't stunned.
It's not really that big a deal. NBC even claims that the earlier date resulted in the highest-rated Emmy telecast of the last four years. Of course that's also pre-Fall season, so there are no new shows competing with the award telecast.
I can live with the fact that NBC is doing the show. I can handle the August date instead of September. I just hope that NBC really takes the time to consider letting the Glee kids perform -- remember the Thanksgiving Day Parade edict? -- and also they should ask Neil Patrick Harris to host again. True, he's a CBS star and NBC is loathed to promote the competition, but NPH earned the right to do it again.
However, my instincts say that NBC will want to strut their stuff and install one of their own as host. Tina Fey... Amy Poehler... Steve Carrell... Conan O'Brien... Jay Leno... Oops, I think I threw up a little in my mouth. Ignore that last name.

How about Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann?
Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison can provide commentary.

I want Leno to host just to feel the hate emanating from the audience.
"And now, here's your host: The reason some of you no longer have a job!"

By then he'll be unemployed too.
Well, him or Conan.

I'm ok with this. Football is a big deal. Just like everyone programs around American Idol, you just have to work with it.
