Review: Dancing with the Stars - Performance 9 Results

The final four of Dancing with the Stars
(S09E19) It's been nine weeks on Dancing with the Stars and I didn't expect to see Joanna, Kelly, or Donny around this long. Unfortunately, one of them was eliminated.

For no reason, Melissa Rycroft showed up on this results show and slipped in the professional's performance. This was probably because her fans caused an uproar since she wasn't a candidate for the Design A Dance competition. Instead of "Sabrina was robbed" we got "Melissa was robbed," and ABC listened.

It was a busy show, but the elimination was not a shocker to me. By this point, fan support outweighs the judges scores.

Encore - Mya & Dmitry - Salsa - The dance felt more wild the second time around. I hated the light balls in the back, it reminded me of a sweet sixteen. Mya got part of her skirt stuck on her heel and quickly recovered. At the end, Dmitry slid too strong and headbutted Mya.

During the recap, we find out that Kelly admitted she totally forgot her solo, scaring Louis. We get a slo-mo of Kym's shoe getting caught in her dress, but then Donny stepping on the skirt didn't help the situation.

Musical Performance - Nine - "Be Italian" - I love a good musical performance and whenever tambourines are added, I'm happy. The partner tricks they used were sharp and sexy. I found the group posing to the number nine a really creative use of the new projector.

Musical Guest - Alicia Keys - "Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart" - I was happy to see Alicia attempt using the stage when many performers just stand. I got confused when the piano ending started playing without her actually playing; I assume it was the keyboardist that she walked past at the beginning.

We get a weird lip-sync to the song "Under Pressure" for no reason. Kelly clearly had the most fun, but Donny looking insane took the cake. Joanna & Derek and Mya & Derek start the eliminations. Mya & Dmitry are in the finals, but Joanna & Derek have to wait.

Musical Guest - Leona Lewis - "Happy" - I instantly noticed Leona lip-synced the beginning, she actually sang after she hit the high note, but she reverted back to lip-syncing at the end chorus. Watching the contemporary dancers made me wonder what was happening on So You Think You Can Dance. (Ironically, Carrie Ann showed up to talk about the Dizzy Feet Foundation on SYTYCD.)

The eliminations continue with Donny & Kym and Kelly & Louis. Donny & Kym are safe, Kelly & Louis will have to wait.

Musical Guest - The Bee Gees & Melissa Rycroft - "You Should Be Dancing" - It's nice to see that the Bee Gees are still singing with strong falsettos. Chelsie, Cheryl, Tony and (SYTYCD Alum) Artem dance the beginning of the performance. Cheryl & Artem get a solo, but it felt shortened because Melissa & Tony show up and the crowd goes wild. I'm surprised that she did the whole performance without shoes. She had some graceful and effortless moves and made me miss the Gilles/Shawn/Melissa final three last season.

Results Shows Routines - The professionals talk about getting the music, learning choreography, using words like "chaotic" and "bicker." We get to hear the voice of Edyta this year, she mentions how she's been there for nine seasons and group choreography can get boring.

The eliminations finally end with Joanna & Derek and Kelly & Louis. Len points out that Kelly appreciates dancing and Joanna was the most consistent of couples. The couple with the lowest total is Joanna & Derek; they're going home. Kelly is in tears and Sharon is dumbfounded.

The couple gets to do their Viennese Waltz one last time. It's a fitting way to end their time on the show. I still find the performance to be her best and Joanna didn't have to use her sexiness. She gets a standing ovation.

I'm disappointed that Donny wasn't eliminated, then Marie could say that she was better. I think that Donny's showman skills aren't enough for him to win, so if the judges can fudge scores, Kelly has a great chance of winning.
