They're incredible and they're edible, but eggs will also harm you. At least that's what PETA is saying.People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals doesn't like the fact that the PBS show is being sponsored by The Egg Board. PETA's web site says that "Sesame Street is misleading children and parents into believing that eggs are a wholesome food when the truth is that eggs are linked to multiple serious health problems and that the egg industry horribly abuses animals." I think what they meant to say is that the industry horribly abuses animals in a simply delicious way, because scrambled eggs with just the right amount of salt and pepper are awesome.
This is a weird way for PETA to wish Sesame Street a happy 40th anniversary.

Look, we as human beings understand the base emotion of compassion, and we all identify similar traits in animals as are also found in humans. We have pets, we go to petting zoos, we take safaris. It's natural to admire and respect, and even love animals for companionship.
That said, PETA please STFU.

That's the thing though. PETA is bringing this up *because* it's Sesame Street's 40th anniversary. They are nothing more than a finely-tuned publicity machine. First and foremost, they exist to perpetuate the PETA name, and that's what they're doing here.

Does PETA have any idea how much ill will dumb publicity moves like this buy them? They've become so radicalized that even people who believe in 80% of the things they do think they're fringe crazies. Greenpeace has also gone in this direction, especially with the constant attacks on Apple computers, which have been more environmentally friendly than other brands for years, yet are always attacked by name.

Laying siege to Sesame Street? Yeah, they're the guys in the black hats. Right... But there is some pretty egregious stuff that goes on in factory farming (Just search on "Mercy for Animals" and "chicks" on You Tube) and it certainly wouldn't be a bad thing for it to be addressed with a more constructive strategy.

You should be asking why the egg industry targeted Sesame Street. The meat, dairy, and egg industries target the most vulnerable populations to try to sell their cheap, mass-produced, unhealthy products. They have convinced Americans that we NEED their products to survive, which is so far from the truth. And of course, they start with children, who are vulnerable and believe what they are told--especially what they hear on Sesame Street.

First PETA had celebrities partially naked rather than wear fur, and I was all for nude celebrities. Then they wanted to rename fish 'sea kittens' and I was too busy googling "nude celebrities" to take much notice. But now PETA is going after Sesame Street. Now they have gone to far!!!

Well, if we're tallying up their weirdness for this year, let's not forget the protest against Canadian seal killing they held on a World of Warcraft server (Whisperwind) back in April. Also, they asked the band Pet Shop Boys to rename themselves Rescue Shelter Boys (um...no).
Yes, awful things happen in factory farming and the situation needs to improve, but PETA isn't doing the cause any favours.

Since 1998, PETA has opted to “put down” 21,339 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens instead of finding homes for them.
PETA’s “Animal Record” report for 2008, filed with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, shows that the animal rights group killed 95 percent of the dogs and cats in its care last year. During all of 2008, PETA found adoptive homes for just seven pets.
Just seven animals -- out of the 2,216 it took in. PETA just broke its own record.
