Review: Smallville - Idol

Smallville(S09E08) Wonder Twin Powers, Activate! Okay, so it wasn't so much the Wonder Twins as an homage to the Wonder Twins. Or Wonder Twins: The Next Generation. You get the idea. The blingy Gleek cell phone was a nice touch. Hell, the ringtone even sounded like an alien monkey.

Of course, the Wonder Twins were just gravy for the actual purpose of the episode: to further the legend of the Blur and heighten the Lois/Clark relationship. Like her predecessor in the 1990's Lois & Clark series, Lois is a smart cookie but really blind when it comes to secret identities. Speaking of cell phones, her ringtone for the Blur was very cute indeed.

I'll reiterate my commentary from last week and say that Smallville is stepping up its game. I enjoyed tonight's episode. The Wonder Twins weren't actually necessary to further things along, but the retro factor thrilled me to no end.

A few questions: why didn't the cops die in the box? I didn't see airholes. Also, wasn't anybody working at the power station when the Twins accidentally wrecked it?

"Holy Hacking"? Has Jayna become the Smallville universe's Burt Ward? I also dug the Corbin reference to the beginning of the season. It's nice when continuity is not ignored.

I loved the irony of Clark's statement "I am not a brand."

It's about time Lois started seeing a shrink. I figured she'd be seeing one even if there were no future visions.

There were other nice little movie references in tonight's episode. Lois' shoe falling off the roof was an echo from Superman The Movie, as was the mention of the color of Lois' underwear (she should have said "pink" somehow). And Chloe's little line about the "Halls of Justice" and use of the term "Wonder Twins" was a pretty blatant homage. "Fog and dog duo" was cute as well.

FINALLY Clark adopts the glasses. It makes sense in the long run, since he has to disguise himself somehow even if it's lame. Mind you, Lois knows perfectly well what Clark looks like without the glasses. It makes me think that in Smallville, Lois will likely be involved with his adoption of the Superman identity, taking the place of Ma and Pa Kent in the comics. It would be kind of cool if she's the one that thinks up the tights and cape.

I reiterate: Chloe is getting ruthless. She's spying on Clark too much. Granted, Dr. Hamilton probably made her paranoid in the beginning of the season, but it is going to bite her some day.

The show remains on the upswing. The only thing that could possibly make it totally sweet would be the return of Luthor. While I know it's a pipe dream, I think The CW should consider keeping a stash of money for a Michael Rosenbaum return.

Next week we get to learn what life on Earth would be like if Zod wins and the Kandorians gain superpowers (and maybe get an explanation of Lois' visions to boot). Yes, alternate timelines and apocalyptic futures have been done to death, but at least it shows us the stakes if the bad guys win.
