(S01E9) Do you think the fact that this was the ninth episode of the first season had anything to do with that number in the episode title? I'm sure there could be a Debate 109 class in college, but I don't believe in coincidences that big. I do, however, believe that I really enjoyed this outing. It was nice to see Jeff buckling down and doing some work. It's odd that he wouldn't have done that in the legal profession. Or maybe he was just used to his Legal Assistant doing all the research for him and just hitting him up with the highlights. Either way, I can't believe that he thought singing in a debate would work. Come on, Jeff.
The rest of the episode featured the return of Abed's student films. Only this time, there's something a little eerie about them, and it's freaking everybody out. And it's not just that he found people in the school who look incredibly similar to every member of the study group.
I almost forgot to mention the adventures of Britta and Pierce. With Britta trying to quit smoking, Pierce offers her his "expertise" as a hypnotherapist. The whole thing was a bit silly, though it was good to see that an older Chevy Chase is still not above the occasional pratfall or two. Into a drum set no less, now that's classic!
Back to Abed's films, though. These weren't nearly as surreal as the one he made to express himself to his father and Jeff a few weeks back. They're really nothing more than the weekly shenanigans of the Community gang we've come to know and love. The freaky part is that they're supposedly foreshadowing what the gang really does.
The part I really wanted to see, though, we didn't get to see. How was Shirley going to be chased by a werewolf? I kept expecting to see Abed run through something that makes him look like he was covered in hair when he took off after Shirley at the end, right after Britta declared Pierce a genius for putting the image of her in a three-way with him in her head whenever she tries to smoke. Yes, things were as interconnected and complicated on the episode as they were in that sentence, but that's a sign of a show that's really coming together.
Abed said he wasn't a prophet. He was just a student of behavior, and he'd come to understand his fellow study group attendees. It's an indication that we've reached that point in the show as well. We understand who these people are, and for the most part where they come from and what motivates them.
I was glad to see John Michael Higgins back as Professor Whitman. I thought he brought a great dynamic to the show when he first cropped up, and I think he's a great character to bring back from time to time. Fleshing out some more of the faculty, staff and students of Community helps it to feel more like a real place that we're visiting.
As for the debate, I'm glad it was just a TV show because I think in real life we would have all felt obligated to feel bad that Jeff just dumped that kid on the ground to kiss Annie. Only I was so glad to see it; smugness bugs me and that kid was crawling with it. The irony being that it was Jeff (smugness personified) who cast him aside.

I disagree about the werewolf. That would have been hacky. I think it's better the way they left it: something might happen that night under the full moon or not, but Abed is concerned about it.
I guess they needed the catch to set up the kiss between Annie and Jeff, but I was expecting Jeff to let the other debater fall. It was clear what the wheelchair guy was expecting.

I was just glad to see Jeff realize that Annie was a catch. There was more chemistry between those two in this episode than there has been between Jeff and Britta all season. I hope there are some consequences to that next week.

Annie with her hair down trumps Britta any day. It was nice to see her recognized as attractive for once. It's hard to imagine a girl like that getting by without anyone swooning over her.

Not that this is really a problem for me, but I think there needs to be something made with the difference in Jeff and Annie's ages - she's a freshman (18-ish) and he's an older guy returning to college after already going through law school (mid-30's I'm guessing). Not that there's anything particularly wrong with it, but in the real world Jeff should realize that any potential relationship with someone that young and with her background would likely be dangerous.
Sure, yes, this is a silly sitcom but it's going to be an elephant in the room unless it's addressed. Hopefully humorously but not tackily.

I love it when she said, "Just pat me". Such a simple line and yet so hilarious. It reminds me when I pat my little sister's friend (who's actually quite hot) after she helped me move some stuffs. The look she had afterward was exactly like annie's!

I don't see why the singing was any more hacky (not worth any points) than slinging yourself out of a wheelchair, but I guess I shouldn't be asking those questions about TV shows.

The more appropriate response would have been for Jeff to let the guy fall.
Instead of the kiss, I was hoping that Jeff would prop the guy up on his feet, exposing the fraud of the wheelchair, and declare man is evil.

This is getting better and better. It's slowly creeping up on my "must-see-this-first"-DVR-list for Thursdays. Better watch out "Survivor" and "The Office"!
And I can't explain why (because I usually don't go for this kind of humor) but when Pierce fell into the drumsets for the first time I about lost it. Tears rolling down... so hilarious. And BTW Allison Brie is also hot with her hair up! Hell, she could shave her head and she would still be hot...

It has already made the top of my Thursday Night DVR watching.
When the wife gets home from choir rehearsal we watch:
1) Community
2) The Office
3) Survivor (by myself, wife hates the show).
At this point, I think that Community had more laughs a minute than The Office. I enjoy The Office, but the dynamics in Community is so good.

I really think this bunch of people should occasionally do or say something that indicates they have a reason to meet as a group. Are they still studying Spanish together? I think they need to invest a little more in that scene if they're going to keep it up. As it is it's sort of a vacuous moment in the midst of everything else.

Annie owns! I'd marry her in a second (I could only hope she'd feel the same.). She's the perfect blend of bat shit crazy and sexy. Alison Brie FTW!!
Thanks to the folks over Egotastic, we could see Gillian Jacob's abundant talent.

Very funny episode. But all of Abed's actors look "eerily similar" to
their counterparts? Really? Because the only thing Troy's actor had in
common with him was skin color.
