The miniseries Torchwood: Children of Earth was a huge ratings and critical success. It was only a matter of time before show creator Russell T. Davies started talking, officially, about moving ahead with another season of Torchwood. Davies told TV Guide that Torchwood is likely to be renewed for a fourth season. The BBC has yet to officially green-light a fourth year, but Davies said he's already working on ideas for the further adventures of Captain Jack Harkness and crew.
"The recession has hit British television, but fingers crossed, it will be a go. We expect things to start to move in January. We've got great ideas for the show. I think there's a further lease on life for many years to come, but certainly for a [fourth season]," Davies said.
After Children of Earth, I'm willing to give anything Torchwood a look. I'm curious to see how Davies will put the Torchwood crew back together after the events of the miniseries.
Last we saw Jack (spoiler!) he was headed off world a broken man with many sins to atone for. Ianto died in Jack's arms, and Gwen was ready to be a mum. It seems like a big chunk of season four might be devoted to the characters putting the pieces back together and building a new Torchwood from the ground up.
Let's just hope the lovely Cush Jumbo will make a return as Lois Habiba.

I love Torchwood but they need to work on creating their mythos - the monster of the week stuff just doesn't cut it anymore. They got a little better about it with Owen but it was still a bit dull. I'd like to see the return of Adam (somehow), maybe more Suzy, etc.
It was really excellent how they weaved it in with the Doctor Who goings on at the time too - Jack running off when the hand detected the TARDIS, the time lock during Children of Earth, etc.

Ohmigosh. I want to say yay, but they have killed off everyone but the unkillable lead character. Who's next, Gwen's baby?

I still don't know how I feel about as this. On one hand the world could use a bit more Jack Harkness, but on the other I have no idea how they can come back from the events in COE.
Wouldn't mind Jack hanging around the new doctor though. Make it easier for some people's transition.
