Review: Nip/Tuck - Abigail Sullivan

(S06E05) "Why is it that we see what we want to believe and we don't believe what we see?" - Sean

I don't really have a ton to say about this episode; suffice to say that it wasn't my favorite. I argued last week that I hoped Teddy's run in with John Doe (I don't think we caught his name) didn't turn into an easy way to end her story and that's exactly what happened. I liked how it played out but only to the extent that it sent Sean off into this delusional "what the hell am I doing with my life" haze. I'll have a lot more respect for what happened in "Abigail Sullivan" as long as the consequences are worth it.

So Teddy's plan backfired. Instead of finding a nice friendly family to chat with (and cement her alibi), in a karmic twist, she picked a fellow serial killer... at least I'm assuming he was a serial killer. For someone who does nothing but take life, it was perhaps a bit too ironic for John Doe to be so giddy when he proclaimed that he had saved Sean's life, but the fact that it led to Sean finding out the truth about Teddy was the saving grace of the whole ordeal.

She told John Doe about her plan to kill Sean and the kids and then tried to bargain for her own life by splitting the life insurance payout with him. I still don't understand how she'd get the money though -- with Sean dead, how would the policy go to her? Wouldn't it got to Julia as next of kin for Connor and Annie? Regardless of that plot hole, it was a nice touch for someone as twisted as John Doe to be disgusted by Teddy's plan, calling her toxic waste and a bug. Anyway, I had been worried all along that Teddy's plan would just be Colleen Rose all over again, but this wasn't nearly as satisfying as it could have been.

A few more thoughts --

  • Nice to see Christian handle Abigail's parasitic twin surgery solo. From what they explained, it was pretty complicated. Since the beginning of the series, Christian's skills as a surgeon (vs. Sean's) have always been called into question, yet he nailed this one. Good for him.
  • I was excited for Julia's return, but what a waste it was! All she did was chastise Sean for his choices and take the kids away -- again. Her presence added nothing whatsoever to the plot.
  • Mike wasn't in this episode, but I assume he's still with Kimber. Yet we saw Kimber help Christian. I hope it goes somewhere with those two this season because much like Sean pointed out, I'm getting tired of those two fighting the inevitable.
  • As for Matt, this was just a long time coming when you consider everything he's done -- the mime robberies, the meth, running over that kid when he was high on pot, beating the transvestite... I know I'm forgetting stuff -- it feels more than justified. I just hope this goes somewhere. He's in jail. I'd like to see that instead of his next appearance being the day he gets out.

As for that final scene, what does everyone make of that? After Sean dumped Teddy's ashes in the trash, he stripped down and dove into the ocean naked. A well-deserved cleansing? Or a self-imposed punishment?
