Review: The Biggest Loser - Week 9

Rudy Pauls(S08E09) Suddenly, it's game on! After this week's double elimination, we're left with our final six competitors. Now they've no choice but to start playing the game. No more of this "who deserves to be here" crap, because there's a quarter of a million dollars on the line and they're starting to smell the finish line.

With Tracey gone, it looks like the producers have found their next "villain," though it could just as easily be a case of the whineys with another contestant -- a contestant with a history of whining.

Both challenges were endurance events, with one having the contestants jump up and grab tennis balls secured to a panel by velcro strips, and the other having them jump off a trampoline and through a hoop a couple of hundred times. When Ali announced that it took 100 jumps through a contestant's hoops to eliminate them, I was flabbergasted. I was also pretty sure we were going to see an injury.

It looks like, other than a few scrapes and bumps, everyone came through it all right -- physically. Shay came out of it pissed, though I wasn't sure of her strategy at the end. She felt that she and Rudy had made a pact to not knock one another out until they were the last two standing, but when it got down to the two of them and Danny, Rudy started taking her out with Danny.

I guess she was trying to stand by her word, but Shay kept plugging away at Danny's ring, essentially handing Rudy the victory. I'm not sure why, if she felt he betrayed, she would secure him immunity on the ranch. It seemed like a pretty dumb move. It didn't help much with the voting either. Apparently, this was supposed to paint Rudy as villainous, but I'm not sure it did. It painted him as a competitor who was there to win. Shay needed to step up and take control of her own journey, rather than continuing to rely on people to keep her there. In the end, they didn't anyway.

Speaking of the vote, I didn't really follow the logic of what Rudy and some of the others said. In a choice between Amanda and Shay, I didn't think either girl was a huge threat to the remaining contestants. Amanda has proven she's simply terrible at losing weight, and Shay just dropped 17 pounds and still fell below the yellow line.

Nevertheless, in a 3-2 vote, Shay was booted. This week, Ali introduced a red line. The person who fell below that was booted immediately, and it was Daniel with a 5-pound loss. So in one week, the entire orange team was gone.

There were two things about the follow-up videos that bothered me. I was pretty pissed with the way Daniel's partner from last season David blew Daniel's chance to stay on the Ranch. And there he was, as fat as ever, saying he didn't feel all that unhealthy and he still had no drive to do anything about his weight problem. I'm glad to see Daniel still hanging in there.

We didn't get the late check-in with Shay, which had me worried that she didn't do that well on her own. But, she appeared on The Jay Leno Show that night and revealed that she was down to 320 pounds, so she is doing it at home. She's really going to have to push it, though, if she wants to beat that record of 214 pounds lost in a single season by the finale.
