This seems to be the week for cancellation notices. ABC canceled Eastwick yesterday and Hank today, and now FOX has announced that they are canceling Joss Whedon's Dollhouse. Is this a surprise? Not at all. In fact, a lot of people were rather surprised when the show was given a second season. I wonder how many fans of the first season didn't even bother watching the second season of the show because they knew it was a surprise that the show got renewed and they knew it was just a matter of time before FOX canceled it? Or maybe the Friday night slot was another reason a lot of people weren't watching.
The show will actually finish its whole 13 episode order, which is something a lot of canceled shows can't say. Now we'll just have to see if Whedon will have an actual ending for the show.

I hate TV being on Friday, especially shows nerds love. BSG was on Fridays, Dollhouse, Terminator, Sanctuary, etc. But the ones on cable/satellite last, which I think is because they show reruns later that night and again that weekend. Perhaps if FOX had been doing that too? I mean, really, I go out and have fun on weekends. We don't sit in front of the TV all night. I'm not surprised a the cancellation, and I think it's a number of things (one being the day, one being the network). If it had been on CW, would it still be on and going strong? Charmed lasted 8 seasons. Supernatural....5. Maybe CW stuck behind them because they knew it would be a limited series. But I think it could've worked because I'm sure Dollhouse would bring in around the same numbers as the rest of its shows. I'm assuming that its shows don't have good ratings (which is a shame for Supernatural because it's AMAZING).

Maybe another network can pick it up. I could see it on SyFy. It is science fiction messing with peoples brains. I really liked this show. I will be sorry to see it go.

I think Syfy picking the show up would be a cool idea. I think I read that Dollhouse's budget is already cheaper then many Syfy shows already.

I hope and pray his next show doesn't end up at Fox or CW. Too many disappointments over the years.

For those interested, Joss's thoughts on the news:
"Hmm. Apparently my news is not news.
I don't have a lot to say. I'm extremely proud of the people I've worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you'll agree in the coming months. I'm grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again.
I'm off to pursue internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I've read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you'll know what my next project is. But for now there's a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear.
Thank you all for your support, your patience, your excellent adverts. See you again. -j. "

Can I go back in time and offer to trade FOX Dollhouse for an equivalent number of extra episodes of Firefly?
Truth be told, FOX was more than fair to Dollhouse, far more fair than they were for Firefly. Hopefully Joss doesn't get as discouraged by this as when Firefly was canceled, and he can quickly move onto another project, hopefully something more along the lines of Buffy or Firefly.
(Hint to Joss: there's a wide world of cable networks, and ONE of them has to have some time and money to buy your next project. If not? Heck, Dr. Horrible proved you can do it on the Internet.)

I like the cast, I like the Joss's work, but Dollhouse just isn't very good. Cancelling Firefly was catastrophic jackassery. Cancelling Dollhouse is a solid programming decision.

my thoughts exactly. giving a second season of Dollhouse hardly atones for the sin of canceling Firefly.
i would've much rather had 13 more episode of Terminator honestly. the best episodes of Terminator were leagues better than the best episodes of Dollhouse.

The worst episodes of Terminator were better than Dollhouse. The best episode of Dollhouse didn't even air, in the us.

Good! I still think they are the reason for the Sarah Connor Chronicles cancellation.

Pet peeve: People who don't watch good/awesome programs just because they think they'll get cancelled.
I watched Firefly and knew it was going to get cancelled, and it was a good time. I watched Deadwood, was frustrated it didn't get to finish, but it was certainly still worth watching. Dollhouse too, even though everyone knew it wouldn't go very far. The list could go on.
Also, CMG is spot on for saying that FOX was better for Dollhouse than Firefly (I think it's because of the good-but-not-great Eliza Dushku being better promo material).

Deadwood wasn't canceled.
I thought Dollhouse had all the elements to be a good show. Dushku is cute, smart, and a talented actress; the premise is interesting, and the surrounding cast were capable. The problem? Bad writing and bad plots. I think Whedon is massively overrated as a writer and creator. Not that ratings ever tell the tale of a show's worthiness but that all his shows have been small and cultish--even Buffy--says a lot about his style. I don't advocate becoming a populist writer but Whedon is nothing more than an idea man. He needs to find a stable of smart, witty, and innovative writers to surround himself with and then he might actually have a show that lasts (Buffy excluded, although Buffy had its fair share of horrible episodes and writing).

Pet peeve #2: People who think Deadwood wasn't cancelled because HBO just didn't want to renew it.
