Review: America's Next Top Model - Dive Deeper

Laura Kirkpatrick has an underwater shoot(S13E09) We're down to the final five on America's Next Top Model and one thing that Top Model is doing better this season than Project Runway is capitalizing on their location. Sure, Laura may look like a tomato during interviews, but at least Hawaii is being represented through their beaches and sugarcane plantations.

This week's challenges were basically recycled from previous seasons. A falling challenge (similar to Season Six's Falling Fairytale photoshoot) and an underwater challenge (which was done in a pool in Season Two for Quench Water). Both proved to be more interesting because of the beautiful location.

Nicole tells Sundai that she's cool because of what little back story she's told the girls. Sundai tells the girls that she will explain the rest of her story if she makes it to the final four. As if she was begging Tyra to keep her for storyline purposes. I'm convinced that's why Erin is still around: to be the immature bitch.

Laura's birthday falls during the taping of the show. Unfortunately, she is rewarded with Spam and eggs. Eventually she gets a five-person party. Gee Tyra, you couldn't afford to give Laura either a present or at least send the final five (and some eliminated decoys) to party at a restaurant?

The girls get a lesson on bikini modeling from Marissa Miller. She exclaims that she's only 5'8. I'm not sure if that's a smack in the face to the rest of the girls or not. All the girls Tyra picked were 5'7 or shorter. I believe that 5'8 is an acceptable model's height. Either way, she teaches the girls about posing, curves, and "Barbie toe."

Marissa gives the girls a chance to practice their poses under a "shower." When I think of shower, the water should be gentle. Instead, the girls attempt to pose with a faucet unleashing water on them. Not sexy.

The girls walk over for their photo challenge. Nigel shows up and announces that the girls are doing a shoot where they jump off the cliff and pose. I would be more concerned that whenever I jumped off high cliffs, I was instructed to keep my body long so I don't get bruised. Luckily, Tyra doesn't care and each girl jumps and poses. Sundai had the worst time as the water smacked the side of her face when she landed.

The winner got a chocolate pearl necklace and she will start the "reverse extra frames" prize. The winner will pick a friend, who picks a friend, until one girl is left out. Nicole wins and picks Sundai. Sundai picks Laura, Laura picks Jennifer. Erin is left without the extra frames.

The girls' photoshoot involves posing underwater, and their photographer was Russell James. All the girls except for Erin get to shoot one round underwater, Jay will give them a critique and they get their second round of shots. Sundai had the most trouble. She cites asthma as her problem. Both Erin and Sundai don't go low enough into the water and their heads get obscured.

The girls arrive to judging and the guest judge was Marissa Miller. Sundai was first and her shot made her look long for once. Tyra has a rule against hair in the face and I'm surprised she selected this as Sundai's photo. Laura was next and after stealing Laura's jacket that her grandmother made (happy birthday) she gets positive reviews. She's reminded to find her light. Jennifer's shot is naturally stunning; Tyra loves how long her legs are. Nicole's shot looks like a fun 80s dance. She basks in the light. Erin is last and her photo looks like a test shot. Tyra thought that she looked generic as a model. They remind her that less is more.

The deliberation degraded into Nigel having a foot fetish party. It's nice to know that one girl's fate is handled by them. Tyra announces the best picture: Jennifer. She is followed by Nicole and Laura. The bottom two are Sundai (all excuses) and Erin (fading away). Erin continues to hang on by a string and Sundai is sent home. Tyra hugs Sundai and it looks like a mother hugging her daughter. She reminds Sundai that she is a role model for foster kids. In her montage, all her shots were 3/4th profile shots.

Next week the girls have hula lessons and there will be a dreaded double elimination. Were you shocked about anything in this episode? Leave comments below.
