(S07E06) Any time Muse Watson returns to NCIS as Gibbs' mentor Mike Franks, there's usually something special in the works. Tonight's episode was no different. With Franks involved in what looked like a heinous act of double murder, Jethro was thrust into the middle of what appeared to be an open-and-shut case.
Not so fast, Probie. The Kelly adrift with two dead bodies -- two ex-military men with ties to a private military operation -- was the first and biggest clue to the mystery.
Vance jumped to the conclusion that Mike had done it, which was just what Mike wanted. If he was going to be investigated, he wanted NCIS to do the investigating. He used Gibbs' boat -- a gift to Jethro's God-daughter, Ameera -- knowing that Jethro would be the one doing the investigating.
The reasons weren't clear at first. Mike said he thought the para-military goons were after him, but he was spinning a tale and didn't figure it out for a while. Everything related to Iraq, Mike's son, Layla's mother, and an abduction. Once the why became clear, the how became clearer. Mike wouldn't have done what he said he'd done, and Gibbs knew it. Mike's a lot of things, but not a stone-cold killer.
So that was figured out, but we still haven't been told how the boat got out of Gibbs' basement. Even Abby couldn't figure that one out. She dismantled the boat for evidence, expecting to discover some secret Gibbs device that would collapse the vehicle into something that would make it through a door, but in the end, nothing.
Well, there was something. The double bullets; a 22 slug inside a 45. Abby and Ducky were amazed that they figured it out, but Gibbs recognized the similarity to a case he'd solved with Mike. A wild geese -- not goose -- case. That was when Mike stopped the B.S. description of how he did it.
It was funny how Vance observed in the end that this was a family thing. In fact, an in-law thing. Mike and Layla's mother brokered some kind of peace and wound up on the porch in Mexico.
Other points of interest
-- Tony was in rare form about Ziva becoming an American citizen, especially comparing her to Little Orphan Annie. If only he had sung "Tomorrow."
-- Favorite line: "Actually, I think Colonel Hogan has a radio in the coffee pot, but the tunnel might have been filled in."
-- It was great to see Harmon smiling so much. That's what happens in these Mike Franks episodes.
-- Abby and Ducky need to work on their intervention skills.
-- The Kelly was one beautiful boat. Gibbs has hidden talents.

Another good episode, but I have to throw out my favorite line of the episode, Mike's: "How about conspiracy to be a bit**."
Classic.

I was operating on the idea that the boats never left the basement intact. That he destroyed them to vent his grief. But now that we've seen one outside I'll have to take back that idea.

Hated this episode...hated it. It was so manufactured it was nauseating. It's as if the writers have this list of throwbacks that they occasionally write in, but this time none of them checked with each other and they overloaded it.
I did see a GLIMMER of the early-years Tony sarcasm at the beginning of the episode, but it was quickly replaced with simply reading his lines. I can imagine the directors and production assistants just off screen saying "OK...you're Tony...you're trivia-smart and sarcastic...and you are badgering Ziva...now give me that smile...no...a little more to one side...a little more...good...now ACTION!"
I'm going to say it...NCIS has finally jumped the shark. It's not this episode...it's this whole season.

Is it just me or is Mark Harmon finally looking his age? Especially compared to Muse Watson. I guess the makeup dept.is focusing on the other pretty boys in the cast now.

I didn't actually dislike this episode. it was fun and had some worthy "turns" in it. But my pet peeve off the bat was the whole marines in the boat thing. Gibbs said he sailed the boat to Mexico and Franks trailered it to the west coast of Mexico. So the boat is on the west coast of Mexico and makes back to Norfolk VA (I'm assuming) in 3 days unmanned right into the harbor? How is that even possible? Did I miss something?

Logan, the first scene took place in San Diego, as did the scene with Vance, Ducky, and Leroy Jethro at the crime scene. Hence Abby's line, speaking of the boat in her evidence garage, "it was flown in on a C-130".

Not a bad episode, but they would not quit talking over the Dylan song at the end, available only on the special NCIS CD, available only at some big box store---so I give the show 5 stars for music, and -5 stars for yammering over the song adding up to a big ZERO.

GREAT show, great episode. Loved Gibbs story at the end; it was told OVER the music because this is a SHOW, not a music video. Suprised to find out the KELLY was a KIT. So over the years, Gibbs could be building the same boat over and over. Also loved the interior of Gibbs house. Looks like my place.
You know, the only problem with NCIS getting so popular is that the NIT PICKERS COME OUT OF THE DAMN WOODWORK! Ease the hell up people!
"...repeat to yourself it's just a show, I should really just relax."
