(S02E07) I'm with Beckett here: I really enjoy watching Castle be a dad. I'm very far away from being the parent of a teenager myself, but I feel like people should be taking notes from him. Well, except for the part where she had to put parental controls on his computer. But otherwise, he strikes a nice balance between relating to her and not trying to be the "cool dad." I was impressed last week with how he didn't just let that drunk girl crash on their couch and made Alexis call her parents, despite her protests, and this week, when he made her go to school despite the fact that she was being helpful.
Since that happened at the beginning of the episode, and the entire thing was peppered with Alexis/Castle interactions, I was definitely predisposed to like this episode. It continued to be a strong episode to -- despite the fact that the subject matter made me really uncomfortable.
I'm not talking about the drugs, or the rape, or anything like that. I just get really uncomfortable when people sit around and try to divine meaning from song lyrics. Since that was a huge thread throughout the episode, I spent a lot of time wincing. But onto the episode itself.
It always seems to be the case in these situations that the people whom the victim trusted the most, and/or the people who are the most upset about his or her untimely death generally have something to do with said untimely death. However, with that said, I didn't really guess the ending beforehand, which to me, is always the mark of a good episode.
One complaint about the episode though, is the scene in which we're introduced to Sky. She's standing over the body of her dead sister, screaming at her while holding a nearly-empty bottle of TV-brand liquor and a knife. Because it's perfectly easy to get into a government building and just hang out with some dead folks while swilling booze and brandishing a large weapon. I'm pretty sure the viewers would have understood that this girl has problems, without making her look like the Southern Comfort-soaked reanimated corpse of Janis Joplin.
The ending, though, was nice, with Castle taking Alexis to Sky's concert/Hayley's vigil. It was nice how he supported Alexis instead of just telling her to get over it, since she didn't know Hayley. For someone who has her patience murdered by Castle on a daily basis, it sure seems as though Beckett spends a lot of off-hours with him. I've heard that the writers aren't planning on getting them together at all, but I feel like that's going to be more difficult as time goes on, because I frankly do not understand how she could physically not sleep with him. Seriously.
Also, when they caught Hayley's super-fan at the beginning of the episode, am I the only one who immediately thought, "Chris Crocker?" Now that's scary.

I will say that the last scene with Becket, Castle and Alexis made a nice little happy family shot that actually wants me to see them together.

I LOVE this program... but can someone explain the Beckett mullet to me? I mean, she's hot, as evidenced several times during the series when she's played various "hootchies" to further the case (the Russian hooker she played to get into the card game earlier this season was RIDICULOUS), but the mullet just distracts me. Am I alone on this?

No Dan, you are not alone. As near as I can tell, the producers or whomever decided they were tired of her short haircut from last season, so they gave her extensions. Unfortunately, they gave her hideous ones.

I'm really enjoying the Alexis/Castle relationship. I think it is probably one of the best parent/child relationships since Lorelia and Rory Gilmore. In fact, I can see a lot of similarities: a parent/child relationship that seems almost peers rather than parental, but Castle stepping up and being a dad when he needs to. The comfort telling the parent something that most children might not, followed by "tell your friend's parent" incident was in both series at some point.
I, too, feel that reading too much into song lyrics is a bit too naval-gazy. But I also thing that Castle took it as a part of growing up--everyone goes through that phase--and figures that managing it (rather than shutting it down) is the right response.
I think they are finding an interesting balance with Beckett. Remember: she indicated in the pilot she was a fan of Castle's work, so getting to hang out with him may have some appeal. He proves useful to her, and they seem to have honest conversation (or at least try to) in addition to banter. But she may also feel that, professionally, she has to keep her guard up.

"I've heard that the writers aren't planning on getting them together at all" - where have you heard that from? That sounds like a horrible plan. I get that they're probably not going to get together this season, but seriously, they could work absolutely fine as a married couple someday, the way they interact with each other is that good.
This show seriously has the best relationships on television right now.

I would love to see someone disprove Joss' theory that your main character can't have a good relationship without the show becoming crappy. If ever there were writers and characters who could make it work, these are the ones.

I just re-watched the previous week's Halloween episode and noticed that the sister of the "vampire" was wearing a Haley Blue t-shirt. I just think it's cool how they tie things together like that...

I'm sorry kids. I love this show but this episode was very shark like. The dead singer and her drugged up sister looke to be in their early thirties. (Were they the same person?) And, really, solving a case through song lyrics. Give me a break. And the banter between Castle and Beckett seemed to be a little forced. Hey! One bad episode out of a bunch is not too bad. Just one fans opinion.

I love that someone else made the Gilmore Girls parent/child relationship connection. Loving this show for its pace, banter, dialogue and random pop references just like GG as well.
The characters are great, all of them. Nathan Fillion is FANTASTIC.
Best show on tv right now by far.
