Kathy Griffin dances her way into new ABC series

bravo_kathy_griffin_mikeAttention, attention! This is not a joke. It's not a spoof or a gag. Kathy Griffin will host a dance show for ABC. That's right, the funny lady of Bravo's My Life on the D-List, has said yes to hosting Let's Dance, a new celebrity reality show in which stars compete with one another by re-creating classic routines from pop culture. That means someone is going to try and do Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" dance from Motown's 25th Anniversary Special, don't you think?

I am not a Dancing With the Stars fan, but this show sounds like something I'd be interested in watching for a couple of reason. Number one is Kathy Griffin. I think she's hilarious. She also loves celebrities, so I could see her really getting into this show and being the perfect built-in zingmeister. She'll say whatever comes to her mind, and -- fortunately -- that's usually pretty funny.

The second reason I'm going to check out Let's Dance is the concept. I want to see what these stars are going to attempt to re-create. Will it be as good as this piece by Usher? Take a look at his re-creation of Gene Kelly's brilliant "Singin' in the Rain" title number, which was spliced together at YouTube:

Okay, if we can expect a Michael Jackson and a Gene Kelly, there has to be a Fred Astaire number, too. Maybe Fred and Cyd Charisse from The Bandwagon, doing "Dancing in the Dark." That great dance was lovingly satirized by Steve Martin and the late, great Gilda Radner on Saturday Night Live.

There's a plethora of options available, so it'll probably depend on which stars are involved and what they think they can pull off. Let's Dance will get a solid launch by premiering on Monday, Nov. 23, at 9:30 p.m. That's right after the finale performance of Dancing With the Stars.

There are five episodes planned for this initial run -- which I think means that if it does well, it might be back in the spring. After the premiere, Let's Dance will run on Mondays at 9 p.m.
