Smallville really is the show that won't die. After more than eight years, numerous cast departures, and countless recycled plotlines, Smallville might be headed for a tenth season, producer Kelly Souders told EW. Somehow, the veteran superhero series manages to stay on the air while shows like Southland and Trauma can't seem to make it past season one.
Smallville has experienced a drop in ratings since its recent move to Friday nights on The CW, but Souders says the drop off hasn't been that bad. Last week's episode, "Roulette," attracted 2.5 million viewers, a season high for the series. It shared third place in the ratings with ABC for the 8 p.m. hour. That's not terrible for a CW show in its ninth season.
Souders said the Smallville staff is currently breaking a season finale, not a definitive series finale, for the end of season nine. Does it involve Clark finally putting on the blue and red suit? Does Chloe survive? Will Michael Rosenbaum return as Lex Luthor? Souders isn't saying, but I'm sure it will involve the recently cast Julian Sands as Clark's father, Jor-El.
Anyone excited about this news? What would you expect or want from a tenth season of Smallville? A New Krypton arc? Doomsday's return? (Please don't say a mid-season visit from Lana Lang.) Or should Clark hang up his trench coat and finally say goodbye at the end of season nine?

I used to love this show, but it needs to die already..... It used to be so good and now it's painful to watch, like a beloved grandparent slowly withering away from alzheimers.

I couldn't agree more. Sometime you have to let go of a series and know when the time has come to end it. Smallville has lived long past its time. Personally, I think the stories so far this year have been rather lame; I especially hate the outfit they have Welling wearing. Nine years is a long time for any series to run and ten would be pushing it for this one.

I agree with Chrisw. Last season was painful. I got as far as the premiere this year, which was so incredibly incoherent that I felt like I needed a comic book to follow along. I now have about 4 shows stacked up on my TiVo, and I'll probably just delete them and the season pass. I regret the day the show stopped being what it started out as and turned into comic-fanboy-wish-fulfillment theater.

They proved last year that it can still work. It was one of the best seasons yet until Lana came back. This season is starting to work well too. The further they go into Superman, the better it gets. It isn't as good as the start of last year, but it doesn't have that ticking Lana Lang timebomb sitting on it.
I'm ok with them making an effort to get it, so long as it doesn't interfere with a true finale.

Funny, that same network cancelled Star Trek: Enterprise for low ratings, even when it consistently brought in more than Smallville's current 2.5 million viewers. Man how the times (and network execs) change. I guess 2.5 million viewers is an acceptable measurement for renewal.
If Smallville really does get a 10th season, I won't be watching it. It's fading fast, and I've stuck with the show for 9 seasons now... it needs to end this season.

The finale this season should be Welling in the famous tights, soaring through the sky to the John Williams tune. It doesn't get any easier for a series finale. And if they wanted to create a cool last image, hire Rosenbaum for one scene in which he is in a business meeting in a sky-rise and watches ominously was Supes flies through the sky through a huge glass window/wall. The end.

Actually, Smallville hasn't been as good as it is now. It's finally becoming about Clark & Lois and Clark becoming Superman. Not only is the direction and writing better, the show feels completely different in terms of music and visual effects. It feels like a movie. Tom & Erica have matured into Clark & Lois and their chemistry is off the charts. I'm so hoping for a season 10 so they can fully explore the mythos of Superman.

The show has been a billion times better this season and most of last season compared to previous few so I'd love to see another. I can't wait for the Geoff Johns episode coming up, supposedly they had so many characters involved they made it 2 parts. Very cool.

If they finally make it in to a full fledged Superman show I'm all for it. But if it's more of what we have now, no thank you. Please make it a Superman show, especially now that no more movies are going to be made.

If you guys don't want a 10 then don't watch that simple, but as for the die hard superman lovers, I could watch this go on for seasons and seasons, the show is finally getting to the point where I have always wanted it to be, He is stepping into his destiny, and that's all something we have been waiting for from the start. I always thought that they should kill smallville and name it metropolis. But smallville sounds good. I would love a new lois and clark series, we have been waiting all this time for him to become superman, and now we don't get to see him as that, that would be lame, and that's what season 10 should be and finish out strong!

Yes...I love this show. Though every season I have a harder time getting the wife to watch. When she does she laughs and likes it.
I agree that as we get more superman the show gets better. The need to do something to say ..we know we said Clark would never fly...but what we meant was Clark would never fly before he was 21.
