It's an effective opening, introducing all of the characters and showing us how the aliens come to our planet. If something happened like this in real life, would people really stand in the street and point and go to the top of buildings to get a better look or would we see a big ship and completely freak out and run out of town?

My current working theory is that people in Science Fiction entertainment, especially in alien invasions, have never seen a science fiction movie in their life.
I formulated it during the War of the Worlds remake, when everyone was just standing there as the tripod came out of the street.

I dunno, it'd probably be a mix. Some people would be stunned, or would gawk. (Rubbernecking syndrome). Others would run and panic.
In reality, if something with that level of technology came to our planet with ill intentions, with the level of technology we have now, running would quite possibly be pointless. Unless you're Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning.

Greetings: I missed two pivotal moments during the show's premiere.
(1) What was the commodity the visitors needed us to provide as replenishment in exchange for their techogically- advanced knowledge?
(2) How did the FBI agent Erica's son and his buddy gain access to the ship?
