I started watching Law & Order during the Briscoe and Green days, so I don't know a whole lot about Detective Rey Curtis, Briscoe's former partner from '94-'99. What I do know is that Benjamin Bratt is pulling a Chris Noth and returning to the show that gave him his big break.
Bratt, whose A&E series, The Cleaner, was just canceled, is reprising his role as Detective Rey Curtis on the original Law & Order. However, it doesn't look like the current crime-fighting duo of Lupo (Jeremy Sisto) and Bernard (Anthony Anderson) have anything to worry about: Bratt is only signed up for one episode.
Apparently, Curtis's return figures heavily into Lt. Van Buren's (S. Epatha Merkerson) current cancer storyline, which is an interesting reason for him to come back after ten years. I would have thought it would be an old case, or something along those lines that would cause a detective to return.
While Bratt's role is only scheduled for one episode, I get the feeling that this could maybe be a test run for future appearances. While I would love to see Bratt on the show in some capacity, the Lupo and Bernard pairing has made the show the best it's been since Jerry Orbach left back in 2004. What would be great would be if Bratt was reintroduced on the original, but then joined SVU or Criminal Intent. CI can certainly use the help, but I'd kind of love to see him work with Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) over in Special Victims.
What do you hope happens? Do you want Bratt to stick around, or is a "one and done" appearance better?

Bring back reviews of Law & Order (all three iterations)!!!
It would be great if Goren joins the original. How about Munch leading Lupo and Bernard?

I would love to see Bratt back, if only for one episode. I don't think I would like to see him as a regular on the original L&O, only because I think that they have a fantastic dynamic going on right now with Lupo & Bernard and Cutter, Rubirosa and Jack. It would be nice to see him return to something like CI, especially with the big casting changes they're facing, or even with SVU to change up the dynamic a bit.
Anyways, I'm really looking forward to what they've got planned for his character. I'd love to know what's happened to him since his departure.

You are correct. In my opinion, the best pairings were Bratt+Orbach, followed closely by Noth+Orbach.
But you're right, Lupo+Bernard is great. Absolute worst: Jesse Martin. I pretty much stopped watching when he was on.

I'm very happy to see Bratt's return. I guess I'm in the minority, I think both Anderson and Sisto (whom I normally like) are a terrible fit and have no chemistry on the show or with each other. I cringe when Anderson tries to do the "sardonic comment" thing in the teasers, and Sisto has adopted this weird intonation that also makes me cringe.
Noth is my fav so any plans for his appearance would be much appreciated! He's by far the best cop, created chemistry with each of the rotating cast, and many of the best episodes revolved around him (e.g. Confession, Bad Faith, Last Rites - and note the Catholic theme too).
