(S09E05) Tonight we get an Oliver-centric episode that finally resolves his issues. Good! Now we can get to the more interesting dramas of the series such as that with Major Zod and his time-traveling Kryptonian army.I had a myriad of questions about certain inconsistencies of the episode. No matter how wrecked Oliver was, how did he get so stupid as to swallow a pill given to him by a stranger in a casino? How did he get a flashlight while in the coffin? What casino takes car keys as collateral? Fortunately, they wrapped it up all neatly at the end by blaming Chloe for all his troubles during the episode.
I do have one question: what was with the white suit? Did they just want to extenuate the blood and dirt of Oliver's situation? His dry cleaner is going to curse the day he was born when he brings in that suit. Mind you, Oliver has enough money to just get throw it away and get another suit.
I would even ask why Lois was doing laundry at Clark's, but we learned that answer, too. "How does a guy with nine phone numbers not return phone calls?" That's a dealbreaker! (It's an inside joke for those of us who managed to catch both this show and 30 Rock this week.)
In the comics, Roulette kidnaps super-powered folk and has them fight each other while taking bets on the fight. In this version, she's more like the character of Arcade from the X-Men. She puts heroes through trials and tribulations just to bet on whether they can get out of it.
When she said "they found us," I said to the television "Of course they found you! You only ran twenty feet down the street!" Fortunately, the television didn't answer back.
Between taking the pill and accessing his bank account from someone else's laptop, Oliver really had a case of the stupids tonight. It's a great bank though. My bank usually has some sort of time delay in showing any changes to my bank balance.
Lois did find out that Clark was there during Oliver's suicide attempt, but at least the whole Blur secret identity is still under wraps. For a guy with a variety of vision powers, Clark has to be a little more cognizant regarding video cameras.
One thing shown tonight was Chloe's growing ruthlessness in accomplishing things. Perhaps that very trait will lead to her (seeming) death in Lois' visions. The Lois-vision subplot obviously took a backseat this week, but will likely be back soon.
While it wrapped up nicely, having Chloe hire Roulette to get Oliver back on track was a bit of a lame plot device. But hey, it's Smallville. I'm sure the writing will improve when Geoff Johns steps in.
Despite the poor episode quality, it's still nice to have Green Arrow back. While I don't think trick arrows are going to stop an army of super-people, it's good to have some semblance of the Justice League around.

This show is so relentless unwatchable now, and the problem is Tom Welling's portrayal of Clark Kent. The character has become a smug, arrogant douchebag, especially to his so called friend. He comes off as completely unlikeable. I don't know how you can hang a superhero show around that. It's way past time to retire this one.

True, it works better when it isn't about Clark...
Although Oliver Queen is a pretty huge douche himself...

Why comment on a show you call unwatchable? Not too many superhero tv series have lasted 9 years so they are doing something right. And they gave Welling a ton of money to come back for this season with an option for next so I don't think too many people would agree with you on that.

Hey, lay off... most of the crap on TV is unwatchable, but, on the other hand, most people are morons.

"...most people are morons. "
This is why well-written, quality shows get canceled prematurely and reality tv reigns supreme.

Seriously, get that Mike guy back on the reviews. I thought Brad had finally realized he had no business reviewing Smallville but now he's back. Now we've got idiots like him making comments. If you don't like the show, go watch the ones you like. Smallville is getting better ratings on Friday than all of it's shows except Thursday nights.

Smallville really likes doing their homages. This week's plot was very similar to the 1997 movie "The Game"

Dude, this wasn't an homage. It was an outright ripoff, assuming that people who watch this show never saw the movie. They steal everything, from being put in a coffin to the bad white suit to fooling the guy into access his bank account. I was watching this episode knowing exactly what would come next because I've seen the movie a couple times. Seriously, they need to start coming up with their own ideas.
I did like was the comment about an "anti-life formula", a direct reference to Darkseid in the comics. Otherwise, this episode was written 12 years ago.

I thought the same thing THE SECOND they mentioned his bank account. As if a bell went off in my head, I went "oh, yeah, 'The Game.'"
However, the beginning was also similar to any of the Saw films, and reflected the 2006 episode "Mercy."
I've been a loyal watcher of Smallville since the first season, endured all the drama and unnecessary screentime they gave Lana in her final seasons, looked past the 'freak of the week' episodes... and I don't know... I think this season will be my last for watching the series, unless they end it themselves.
I don't agree that they're turning Clark into the asshole-ish character. He's unfortunately just thrown into the middle with 1) all the story lines they have going this season, 2) trying to resolve what's going on with Oliver, 3) Lois, and 4) what Chloe is becoming.
I was a big Chloe fan, even when they started to give her the characteristics Lana had in seasons past, but I didn't buy it this episode.
I think what we're seeing here is that the show has possibly already ran its course and is on borrowed time.
If they continue it, I'd prefer we saw a progression to 'Metropolis' and shake up the cast a bit. Things *have* to change for [this version of] Clark/Superman to continue, otherwise I'm afraid they're going to run this show into the ground, and that'd be a shame... it's had a good run and some strong seasons and very strong episodes.

apparently we were supposed to think he was so broke at the casino he had nothing to bet with but his car... then we see he has 3 BILLION dollars in his bank account?

It didn't occur to you, even before you found out that Chloe was behind everything, that the flashlight wasn't left their intentionally? Obviously, they wanted Oliver to see the message in the coffin and they wanted him to break out of there. I thought that was fairly obvious but I guess people never fail to surprise me.
