(S01E07) "I don't trust a man with curly hair..." - SueI'll just say right off the bat -- I was a little bored by this episode. I think because it centered on the bickering and manipulations of Sue and Will. It was annoying and sort of made me want to turn the channel.
But I stuck with it because, of course, I had this review to write, but also because of the musical numbers scattered throughout the show. It clarified for me what I love about Glee:
- Musical numbers.
- Kurt. Much more Kurt is needed.
- Any storylines with Jayma Mays (Emma Pillsbury), particularly those involving Matthew Morrison (Will).
After the jump, more about this episode and what I don't love about Glee.
Ok, so what I don't love about Glee is much of what comprised this episode:
- The storyline with Terri's fake pregnancy. I would like it to just go away. Not only is she just an irritating character, but it makes me feel bad for Will, because he deserves someone worthy of his love -- like Emma. I can't figure out what he ever saw in Terri from the beginning. And now she's just leading him astray, saying he needs to get down in the gutter to fight with Sue.
- Sue. Sometimes she's funny, but only if she's in the background doing her scheming. An entire episode of Jane Lynchisms is too much, though I guess it was weirdly amusing when she called the kids "Asian ... other Asian ... Aretha ... Wheels ... Gay Kid ..."
Some other highlights:
- I still love Amber Riley's voice. Don't care if it's lip-synched.
- "Drizzle" for a baby's name? What the...
- The Russian power song every time Sue was scheming.
- Sue telling Will not to touch her ... and him touching her.
- "My rainbow tent will gladly protect you from the storm of racism." - Sue
- Kurt saying he couldn't rock a no-hair look, and that even Justin Timberlake has gone back to a fro.
Your thoughts on this episode? Did you like it? Am I just having an off night?

Decent episode. Musical numbers were good. Maybe it's my weakness for blondes, but I think Quinn is a showstopper. Agreed that not having Emma hurt the episode a bit and that Sue's a bit much when she permeates the whole episode. She had some funny quotes, but it feels like the writers are trying a bit TOO hard.
The fake pregnancy: I don't like the story arc either, but at least it's cohesive for the series and it does keep me intereted in how it's going to be resolved.
Question: Is Finn actually a good singer? His voice seems a bit weak to me and he always has a weird posture.

I agree, but the problem is that a major chunk of the series is based on it. It provides the motivation for Will, Terri, Emma, not to mention Finn and Quinn. Without it, at this point, the characters would be just wandering around without purpose and Will would be a philandering bastard cheating on his with with a ginger haired home wrecker.

I am with you about Finn. Though last night when they did No Air...it sounded pretty good, but last week, when he tried to Rock "it's My life" I just cringed.
Jane is a hoot...but by about 30 minutes in I was on overload from her.
Terri drives me nuts..everytime she in on screen I just want to change the channel.

The music was good in this episode, and that's why I watch Glee, for the music and the exuberance and joy the kids have when they perform. Otherwise, WAY to much Sue, too much fake pregnancy nonsense, especially Terris' annoying and insane sister, and no Emma.
And I agree, Finn is definitely vocally challenged. He can sound decent within a small range, but is not a lead male vocal.
And is it me, or is the OB/GYN always on the verge of breaking into the William Shatner impersonation that he used in that Priceline commercial with Shatner? Not that its a bad thing though, I like the Dr.
I find myself wanting more interaction between the Glee club members themselves, like their clandestine jam session in this episode. Let the kids be kids who enjoy each others company and mostly get along pretty well, without constantly having some tension or crisis to divide them. My favorite line of the night? "Goodbye, white people" , from one of the kids as the jam session was breaking up.

They need to use Sue like they did with Mary Cherry in Popular. She should storm in, cause controversy/conflict and storm out. Of course the entire time have witty sniping lines.
Also I hope Ryan decides to bring back some of the former cast from Popular like Sara Rue and especially Tammy Lynn Michaels. Glee is sugary with the exception of Sue (and that isn't a BAD thing) but having some people that can shake things up would not be a bad thing either.

Since we're getting all pedantic here, I'll point out that while "O Fortuna" is in Latin, and Orff is German the entire piece, Carmina Burana (which is not an opera, but an oratorio for orchestra, multiple choruses, and solo singers) is made of songs in several languages from a collection of assorted medieval lyrics.

Sue's background music was Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi (O Fortuna) from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, so it would be German, or possibly Latin. It's worth remembering as it pops up quite a bit in movies and television.

It's Latin and it very nearly criminal to not have any idea what it is. It is easily in the top five of recognizable operatic songs.

It was written in Latin, but Orff was German, so I wasn't quite sure how to classify the piece, just not Russian.

i like Sue. i guess i am a fan of her breaking up the cloying atmosphere of singing Glee kids. its like adding flavor to an otherwise bland soup.

I'm at the point of only watching the musical numbers; the plots outside of the school have completely jumped the shark for me. A doctor committing FRAUD to help a woman fake a pregnancy? A teacher taking a pregnant teen and her boyfriend to a gyno appointment? While you can argue things like this could/do happen, the way they're portrayed in this show is just too much. I'm sure I'll watch the typical "everything works out in the end!" finale, and again do enjoy the musical numbers, but otherwise count me out.

Whats needed is more Sue not less. This show will pplunge into a High School Musical/Saved By the Bell hybrid of vomit if not for the truly unique character of Sue.

I have to say, I love this show, but the fake pregnancy arc needs to end real soon. The idea that the doctor would go this far, even in a show unrealistic as this, is preposterous.
Also, I'm probably the only one, but I think one or two songs is more than enough in a given week. They're starting to feel like the random cut-aways in family that make no sense.
Was Quinn's number real or fake? I thought the cheerios were on academic probation and then all of a sudden they're practicing with Quinn.

I am SO GLAD I am not the only one who can't stand the fake pregnancy arc. Terry really does make me want to change the channel every time I see her. And her sister makes me hide under the blanket (literally). I was exhausted after watching Will & Sue bicker all episode, but in the end, I think it was good for us and good for the characters. We will see. I missed Emma and even Ken.

Is it me, or did Sue seem disappointed that Quinn didn't tell her that she was pregnant?

My impression was that Sue was angry, because Quinn's pregnancy threatened the Cheerios winning their championship. A pregnant cheerleader at the top of their pyramid looks tacky.

I think she was disappointed. as hard-ass as she acts, somewhere she still cares about those girls, quinn was her favorite and she didn't trust her.

I like Glee just the way it is - if you want more musical numbers, watch American Idol. If you want happy go lucky, watch every other bad sitcom that is on.
I like the fake pregnancy storyline and Sue because it makes me laugh. That's all I want.

i thought the impromptu jam the whole glee club had together (not sure of the song) was a great musical moment, it really seemed like the audio from them sitting there and playing it rather than a fullblown musical number recorded in a studio. mix some more of those in. and keep quinn away from lead vocals... weak.
i think sue is one of the best things on the show, but i missed emma. and the pregnancy storyline has got to end soon one way or another, it's getting irritating.
